Jayce struggle between being a counselor snd a scientist was always there and so it makes sense that at one point he decides for one side. So i dont agree with your critique but I think that maybe abandoning it at this time was wrong.
I always thought Jayce would have an arc similar to Michael Corleone, eventually morphing into the LoL version and Piltover's enlightened despot. Mel would act like the angel on his shoulder and eventually help him take down her mother in the larger conflict.

As far as I know the writers for Season 2 weren't the same as for Season 1... which led to whatever this is
