If you took the all time greatest guitar players and handed them every kind of guitar there is and had them play the most difficult music to play on each one, I think Gilmour would crank that out better than anyone.
Guy pratt is the greatest bassists I've ever heard . , so when you get the two best guitarists in the world playing together , you know you're listening to the the greatest influential rock band in the world .
I was at one of Pink Floyds performances of "The Wall" in 1980 at The Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, Long Island on February 25th, 1980,... I was 23 years old. It was/is the most incredible, phenomenal, astounding, performance, show, play, movie, of any kind I have ever seen in my 68 years on this planet! They actually built a literal Wall with on the stage with 5 feet wide by 2 and a 1/2 feet cardboard bricks, as the concert progressed. By the end of the last song of the concert, The Wall started to implode and came crashing down into a pile of smoldering rubble. It metaphorically illustrated the demise of "Pink" "The Wall" concert was so massive and so expensive both logistically and production wise, Pink Floyd performed only 12 concert dates in ALL of the U.S. in 1980,... 6 on the west coast at the L.A. Sports Areana,... and 6 on the east coast at the Coliseum on Long Island where I saw the show. My friends and I couldn't believe we actually got tickets to one of the only 6 shows on the east coast of the United States! It was life changing.
AS others have pointed out, when he asks "did it have to be so high?" he meant the Wall he was building around himself. You almost have to know the whole album to know this. His story eventually leads to comfortably numb, a masterpiece.
As with the story of The Wall, mother wanted to keep her boy safe because his father died in the war. She tried to do everything she could to keep him with her.
I apologize for the personal story, but, like many of you, I grew up with this music, but english was not my first language, and at the end, I used to hear " mom I didn't mean to be so high"... I thought I'd share this, which I never did 😊
The last sentence of the song refers to Roger Waters asking if his mother's "Wall" had to be so (overly protective) high. Roger Waters was always the philosophically gravitational center of Pink Floyd.
"Mother did it need to be so high" is referring to 'The Wall' i.e. the mental barrier he feels his mother helped create between him and the outside world. 'The Wall' - great concept, great story, great album - great reaction.
A very intelligent reaction to a Floyd masterpiece. Both lyrically and musically. Another great Gilmour solo. Thanks Millie. Oh, by the way, that’s a good look for you.
*You need to understand that this album is one giant interconnected piece of art; no single song stands alone. To truly grasp these songs, you must listen to the entire album multiple times. As you do, you'll begin to see how all the tracks come together and form a cohesive whole. This is why you have 'The Wall Part 1,' followed by a few songs in between, and then 'The Wall Part 2,' and so on. Otherwise, you're essentially taking one piece from a thousand-piece puzzle and attempting to explain the entire picture with just that one fragment. It simply can't be done that way.*
The best way to listen to Punk Floyd is to listen to the entire album beginning to end because unlike other artists the songs are all connected on each album even the sounds in between each song
Good reaction to a complex song. You really need to do a full album listen and review to understand completely the song. The reference at the end about being so high refers to the Wall. I never thought of PF as background music. You need to listen , enjoy and think.😊🎉❤
"Fearless" from Pink Floyd Meddle Mixed in with Liverpool Football Club supporter's singing "you'll never walk alone" at a football match back in the 70's when Liverpool dominated football.
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on the song Mother from Pink Floyd . Millie you look lovely in the video.😊🤟 You also have a good point for the lyrics of this song.
You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story. In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, and they didn't play this. I was so bummed. 😭 Happy belated 4/20😁😎
Roger was raised by his mother because of his dad being killed in the war. Millie you have said before how you like Gilmours guitar playing. Recommend some of his solo work . 'Live at Pompeii" " In any tongue" "the Blue" " last time playing " Comfortably Numb on his " Black Strat" which sold for $3.9 million without his Jimi Hendrix guitar strap. Which Jimi played July 4, 1970 the national anthem.
As others have said the album tells the story and ties the songs together as well as the film with the album soundtrack. I highly recommend the film as well.
Pink Floyd certainly provides much food for thought for attentive listeners. Lyrics that challenge, question, and maybe answer life situations are mixed with mesmerizing music. They're a band for folks who love to ponder the messages contained in the songs.
I think this was your best reaction. I really believe you understand Pink Floyd.. A lot of people don't understand what this song is really about. . Thank you.
Excellent interpretation. Now you really should listen to Sinead O'connor singing this at Waters special concert in 1990. Actually the whole show will blow you away. Many comments claim his mother built the wall to tall "Mother did it need to be so high". Mother helped teach pink how to build the wall and Pink Built and built and built. Pink built the wall. Peace/JT
Lo correcto es escuchar todo el álbum The Wall porque el significado de las canciones se aprecia en su totalidad y la belleza de esta gran producción musical del grupo
"The Wall" the movie is the best way to examine what Pink Floyd was trying to say... of course, their timeless music speaks to each of us according to our own experience.
This song makes you very emotional after a long night of LSD. Floyd was always great during those mind states. TOOL is the other band that really makes you feel when your mind is being expanded.
Watching early Sunday morning cartoons can make you emotional after a long night of LSD. For us here in Toronto, it was Rocky and Bullwinkle, the Wizard of Oz and Pinocchio. 😅
Gotta disagree. I have sat down because everyone likes Tool, and listened to hours of their stuff... actually trying to like it and I can't. It's way too pretentious, not very well arranged, and their note selection is terrible. The drummer is pretty good....but everyone else in the band totally blows. It's as if people are so thirsty, they don't mind drinking the sand
@pastorofmuppets1973 To each there own. I've bern a fan of there since 1992. Been there since the beginning. There my favorite band and I love everything about them. People don't have to try and like them.....TOOL makes you love them. But hey.....I guess not everybody.
Something interesting about the string of questions in this song, is they show a progression of age. Starts asking as as kid scared of the world in front, asking after the war in front of him, then asking about the world and girls, ends up asking about the wall around him after it's been built, did it nee to be so high?
Excellent break down. Except the last line is referring to the wall that she helped him build. (I Had this wrong for years myself) "Mother did it need to be so high."
This is a song that has to have to context of the entire album to fully understand. His mom was so overprotective because she was a widow. Her husband was killed in WWII. But it fucked him up, as much as the society he grew up in (see Another Brick In The Wall part 2). Even if you don't do a reaction video, listen to the album. Or even better, watch the movie.
If you love music or want to learn music Pink Floyd would be the best band to study. The stuff they did in the studio was a lot of the time completely experimental. Someday maybe time will catch up to what they created.
There is a great video of Roger Waters doing a remote (social distance) version of 'Mother' during the pandemic which is totally worth checking. Thanks, Millie for a great reaction
"Mother did it need to be so high" The wall a parent builds to protect their child from the world. An over protective parent can limit the skills & experiences a child needs to learn when taking on the world..
I’ve been watching quite a few of these reaction videos to Pink Floyd. It’s has to be said that the meaning of many Pink Floyd’s have be taken by the totality of the entire album. Each album is more a Rock Opera. One song leading into another as chapters of a story. I suggest doing a reaction to entire albums. Especially the movie “The Wall”
Again when he said ( Mother did it need to be so high) He was asking if the Protective wall needed to be so high. Not that the Mother was high. Your reaction was awesome. Thank You
Awesome analysis! Your Pop-Up fact bubbles (Box) are very good! You have great musical instincts! You are the Female version of Paul McCartney!! Crack on, Rock on!! "Mother did it need to be so high" I believe references The Wall being so high, that he could not climb it, since she helped build The Wall, not necessarily the Mother being high. Thanks for all your hard work!
Roger did a full wall concert in Berlin just after the wall came down it's an amazing watch it was a who's who of the music world at the time as he was still not on talking terms with the rest of the band at that point
A very astute reaction to a beautiful and complex PF song. Just a small part of her their massive 1979 hit album "THE WALL". Itself, a complex rock opera. I would recommend **ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, PT. 2** or **COMFORTABLY NUMB** from that album. You will Not be disappointed! Cheers!!
As a person from North America, 90% my favourite musical artists are from England. Our artists could learn a thing or two on quality and style. It seems a lot of the UK artists have a great longevity.
To truely understand 'Plnk Floyd" and their music it really helps to watch Plnk Floyd THE WALL,,, it is wicked,,, and the sound track that is in the movie is LEGENDARY!!!!
This song is within the context of the film where it tells part of the film's story, where Pink grew up in the absence of a father. I highly recommend the film The Wall, but be prepared for 2 hours of insanity and depression.
The wall live in berlin after the fall of the communist bloc wall scissor sisters performed excellent there too. Roger waters pro's and cons of hitchhiking is another quality album/song and this review is not an accurate interpretation of the meaning of the song.
The term "Smother Mother" best self-defines it to me. Mine was one of those. Her life was spent eagle eyeing mine. She had none of her own. Comming in and out of the house was like a military check point. I would time it so if ever I went down stairs to get a drink or anything, that I'd make sure she was in the bathroom, occupied just so I wouldn't get waterboarded with questions and 101 things on her agenda. And when I tell you each and every time she'd hear a pin drop from me, within 2 seconds that toilet would flush and the door would swing open and there'd she be in my face if for nothing else but to visually see me and get between me and anything else I would be up to. Not ONCE! Not once!!! has she ever said, "fuck it, i'm finishing this shit first" 2 seconds, swoosh open that door, in my face...every time unless if I was ninja quiet. You know what that makes you do as a son? Absolutely nothing. Hole yourself up and have no life for her to feed off of. Be as boring as you possibly can be and draw as little attention to yourself as possible. She would talk for hours on the phone to eeeeveryone she could about every detail of what I do. "Today, he drank 4 cups of water! Can you believe that? Last week he was wearing a different shirt I've never seen. What do you suppose that means?" etc... I was like the Truman show, where she had no other life other than to watch mine. Revolved around me. Smoooothered the living hell out of me. The worst part about it is that she's actually a nice person. If I gave her the cold shoulder or tell her to get a life, yell out "what's wrong with you?" it just comes back to me in the form of guilt for being a shit towards her. Sort of like how you don't want to push an old lady out of the way because she's just a sweet old lady but at the same time you can't get around her and places to be.
Millie, as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to other commenters (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece.......
You are right on about many of Pink Floyd's lyrics can seem so simple but be so deep, especially with "Mother". Even though it's one of their more subdued songs, it's just as though provoking. Not sure, but I don't think you've done any ZZ Top. Now that's a lesson in blues, funk, jazz, and almost every type of rock music in one.
In my opinion "Mother" is a portrayal of life Roger's that had with his single mother, since Roger's father died in the Second World War. It also portrays the difficult life that David had with his mother who suffered from a mental disorder. Maybe that's why the song is divided into two. (note, like several PF songs)
If you took the all time greatest guitar players and handed them every kind of guitar there is and had them play the most difficult music to play on each one, I think Gilmour would crank that out better than anyone.

As with the story of The Wall, mother wanted to keep her boy safe because his father died in the war. She tried to do everything she could to keep him with her.

Not sure, but I don't think you've done any ZZ Top. Now that's a lesson in blues, funk, jazz, and almost every type of rock music in one.
This album is very internal. It's about Pinks' descent into madness. Ending with his ultimate redemption when the wall comes down.
You are the second person to get it in one.
Congrats!!!
In my opinion "Mother" is a portrayal of life Roger's that had with his single mother, since Roger's father died in the Second World War. It also portrays the difficult life that David had with his mother who suffered from a mental disorder. Maybe that's why the song is divided into two. (note, like several PF songs)
You have to watch the film. I can never hear any of these songs without picturing the film in my head
COME ON - Oktaf Kanis 🔥
This song is about an over protective, smothering mother who treats her grown child as a helpless baby for his whole life.
This song is based on "Manchurian Candidate" from 1962. But it is relevant to this day.
The last line was referencing the height of the wall.
Listen to "Echoes" and "Mother earth", the two big songs from the albums with the same name.
Best reaction ever.
When the lyrics says::: Mother did it need to be so high they make a reference to the wall (fears, overprotection, etc
"Mother is gonna to make all your nightmares come true"
