AS others have pointed out, when he asks "did it have to be so high?" he meant the Wall he was building around himself. You almost have to know the whole album to know this. His story eventually leads to comfortably numb, a masterpiece.

As with the story of The Wall, mother wanted to keep her boy safe because his father died in the war. She tried to do everything she could to keep him with her.

I apologize for the personal story, but, like many of you, I grew up with this music, but english was not my first language, and at the end, I used to hear " mom I didn't mean to be so high"... I thought I'd share this, which I never did 😊

I was at one of Pink Floyds performances of "The Wall" in 1980 at The Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, Long Island on February 25th, 1980,... I was 23 years old.
It was/is the most incredible, phenomenal, astounding, performance, show, play, movie, of any kind I have ever seen in my 68 years on this planet!
They actually built a literal Wall with on the stage with 5 feet wide by 2 and a 1/2 feet cardboard bricks, as the concert progressed. By the end of the last song of the concert, The Wall started to implode and came crashing down into a pile of smoldering rubble.
It metaphorically illustrated the demise of "Pink"
"The Wall" concert was so massive and so expensive both logistically and production wise, Pink Floyd performed only 12 concert dates in ALL of the U.S. in 1980,... 6 on the west coast at the L.A. Sports Areana,... and 6 on the east coast at the Coliseum on Long Island where I saw the show.
My friends and I couldn't believe we actually got tickets to one of the only 6 shows on the east coast of the United States! It was life changing.

The last sentence of the song refers to Roger Waters asking if his mother's "Wall" had to be so (overly protective) high. Roger Waters was always the philosophically gravitational center of Pink Floyd.

*You need to understand that this album is one giant interconnected piece of art; no single song stands alone. To truly grasp these songs, you must listen to the entire album multiple times. As you do, you'll begin to see how all the tracks come together and form a cohesive whole. This is why you have 'The Wall Part 1,' followed by a few songs in between, and then 'The Wall Part 2,' and so on. Otherwise, you're essentially taking one piece from a thousand-piece puzzle and attempting to explain the entire picture with just that one fragment. It simply can't be done that way.*

In my opinion "Mother" is a portrayal of life Roger's that had with his single mother, since Roger's father died in the Second World War. It also portrays the difficult life that David had with his mother who suffered from a mental disorder. Maybe that's why the song is divided into two. (note, like several PF songs)

The last line was referencing the height of the wall.

It's helpful to know that this song -- the entire album in fact -- is about Syd Barrett, what made him descend into psychosis, the role his mother played in why he was the way he was. It's not a statement on all mothers, just Syd's. It MIGHT be your mother. You decide.

If you love music or want to learn music Pink Floyd would be the best band to study. The stuff they did in the studio was a lot of the time completely experimental. Someday maybe time will catch up to what they created.

A very astute reaction to a beautiful and complex PF song. Just a small part of her their massive 1979 hit album "THE WALL". Itself, a complex rock opera. I would recommend **ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, PT. 2** or **COMFORTABLY NUMB** from that album. You will Not be disappointed! Cheers!!

Everyone really needs to sit down and listen to the album. Then watch the movie.

I love the way this song swaps between 4/4 time to 3/4 time so smoothly and make it hardly noticeable.
    Sorry, typical drummers view.

    There's a message here!
    Mother's here.
    Mother's not going hide.
Mother will watch you and prepare you.
Mother's advise will not be here forever.
    Mother will help you but
Can't keep the world from you.

Basically this LP The Wall is about Roger Waters life from childhood to the modern day . When Floyd released The Final Cut it split the band ,its songs which were rejected from The Wall LP and Richard Wright didnt play on this LP , then Roger Waters fell out with Dave Gilmore so he left

This album is very internal. It's about Pinks' descent into madness. Ending with his ultimate redemption when the wall comes down.

This song is within the context of the film where it tells part of the film's story, where Pink grew up in the absence of a father.
I highly recommend the film The Wall, but be prepared for 2 hours of insanity and depression.

Another aspect to TIC is that Roger Waters was left fatherless as were many in that period of WWII Whose father's were KIA.
Women were also taking over many of the roles left by the men fighting and dying.

Listen to "Echoes" and "Mother earth", the two big songs from the albums with the same name.

Your comments are right if you take this song alone. But if you want fully understand his meaning, you must see the movie " The Wall ". You will have an animation plus the text. You won't waste time and I guarantee you great sensations. This will allow you to situate the time, place and geopolitical situation. And this is very important to fully understand this whole work.
