@@Rembrant65 You can pretty much get the idea behind the entire movie, and the album by watching the full concert. (1980s concerts' visual quality is not great and the 2010s ones provide a great visuals and decent audio, yet I think the 1990 one is the most iconic one - which is done by Roger Waters after leaving PF)
If you want to go down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole and listening to each album a few times, I have a great news for you Roger Waters has a few solo albums following the same theme as he used to set back in Pink Floyd.

Yes, listening to a single song from the wall and trying to understand the meaning is like trying to understand the movie Fight Club from just the first two rules of fight club. There is more going on than is readily apparent.

The album is awesome, it's the life story of fictional rock star "Pink". The construction of his internal mental "Wall" and his eventual decent into madness.
All the events, the death of his father in WW2 while Pink was a baby, his terrible time at school, and people who mentally scared him.
If you like to analyse lyrics definitely have at this one! It's a monster and a warning for everyone even more than 40 years later!

As a grown man I can attest to having fears "put into you" by your mother. A silly reason but nonetheless true was as a kid I loved insects and worms etc. I distinctly remember my Mum reacting in shock and having aversions to the things I'd bring home. I was about 8 years old when I suddenly reacted negatively to these creatures because of my Mum's reaction. To this day I can't pick up a worm. Children are empty vessels to be filled up with whatever people want to pour in.

I am constantly fighting against the same dynamic with my wife and moreso, mother in law
"It's too cold to go outside!"
"You can't do that, it's too dangerous!"
"You're not old enough to do that, too young!"
      "Careful, don't get hurt."
Careful, watch out for strangers in the neighborhood!
You can't go to the playground by yourself! It's too far! (Three blocks over)
Put a jacket on or you'll get sick!
Meanwhile, I got my eye exploded out of my head by a raw egg at aged 17 and after a rough decade or two, the strength I gained from it is absolutely a defining characteristic of my life.

@@Mhantrax IDK about all that my friend. I think a mother changing a child's mind by her reaction seeing a bug or worm is much different in comparison to the points you referenced. The points your wife & mother-in-law speak on are just plain common sense really. Maybe it's me but I don't see the same dynamics at all in comparison to a slimy worm or ugly bug. You mention things that keep people protected from harm in this world or harming themselves. Also good advice that instills moral values & principles on their path in life. I mean don't you think it makes perfect sense to tell not only a child but everyone around you to be careful of the danger's so they don't get hurt? It does to me, I've stressed work safety my entire career as an Ironworker & the one's I look after everyday as a steward on job sites. Just imagine if I or no one else expressed the danger's when we're hanging beams 50 stories high in the sky with nothing around us but the open air. Trust me, everyday is just as important as the day before & the next one to come. It's especially important in a trade like mine to remind Ironworker's in my crew every single day when we walk those beams. Just knowing I'm dealing with a bunch of crazy MFer let's me know they need to be reminded. Cuz you've got to be a little off your rocker to do the job we do everyday in the first place. So it's eccential to remind them on "safety first," otherwise they start getting comfortable & think they're invincible & do stoopid shlt. Which is when people get hurt or possibly even... I ain't even gonna say it, you already know, enough said. That's only one example of many I'm making that even comes close to the same dynamics of worms. Don't get it twisted, I'm not saying to shelter everyone in the world or coddle them so they don't take any risks in life. Again, you should know that already knowing my trade as an Ironworker. I'm just saying be smart about it & use common sense to understand the difference between right & wrong. 🤔. +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😉🤘

One thing about Pink Floyd is Rodger Waters lyrics are not shallow or narcissistic for the most part. They're almost always very deep and about living life or life's pitfalls and they always tell a story!

    • @robertevans2450

I would disagree on the narcissist aspect, Mr. Waters is most certainly a narcissist and the whole Wall album is him psycho-analyzing himself and then having the ego of being able to diagnose himself because he felt that sure of himself.

As many already pointed out, The Wall is a concept album, partially autobiographical about a fictional rocker named Pink (Roger Waters), who went through a mental breakdown before a show, every single tile of the puzzle of his consciousness, fell apart as he finally seal a metaphorical wall, he has been building along all his life, to protect what's remaining of himself from the others.
There's a movie, filmed by Alan Parker, with Bob Geldof as Pink, that is slightly different from the album, but basically it depicts pretty well the story.

Talking about guitarrists with a touch, Tony Clarkin was not only one of those but a bona fide compser as well. He recently passed and it's absolutely unfair almost nobody has reacted to his band Magnum, one of the most underrated bands ever! Songs like "Don't Wake the Lion", "The Spirit" or "Kingdom of Madness" did a lot for the rock prog movement and their most hardrockin' side is undoubtedly enjoyable! Songs like "Just like an Arrow", "Midnight", "Heartbroke & Busted", "Start Talkin Love", "Days of No Trust" and "Vigilante" are clear examples of this.... And for the record, somebody well-known in the rock scene (who can be traced by the initials RT) produced their Vigilante album and you can hear him doing backing vocals in the songs "Sometime Love" and "When The World Comes Down". MAGNUM, a band totally worth giving a try. Long live Tony Carkin!

Congratulations!! 👏👏👏 You're one of the few "reactors", mostly from a later generation, who were able to understand what Pink Floyd tryed to say in their lyrics!
And this song, in a particular way, perhaps is even more difficult to understand because it is from "The Wall", a concept album where each and every song is connected to the other ones!
Your analysis is kind of a perfect one! "Chef's kiss", as some people say! Almost as good as a PF's song! (I don't say these things to anyone! 😅)

Great reaction!! This has long been a top favourite from The Wall. Such a beautifully crafted, sung & played piece (and not as overplayed as it's predecessor - Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2). The live version is even better!
To get the entire context of the song, a full album listen is needed, but basically, yes, you're dealing with an overbearing & protective mother. Pink's father died in the war, so it's just him and her (this is autobiographical as Waters' & Syd Barrett both lost their fathers, Syd's to cancer, Waters' to the war - battle of Anzio - so parallels between Roger & Pink are ever-present) Mother was there for all things, protection, guidance, etc. Some people misconstrue the 'give all her fears to you' as something malicious, but it's not. As parents, we warn our kids of the dangers of society (strangers, disease, heartbreak, unemployment, finances, etc.) - our fears are projected on them (intentional or not), so it naturally becomes their fears. This is why he's asking her for permission to build the wall - should I make this barrier to protect my 'fragile' self from the outside world.
This dynamic is perfectly displayed in the movie of The Wall (which is also worth the review) - plus the movie version of the song is slightly different (and equally beautiful).
    Love it. Cheers!

My mother is overbearing and protective. When I was a child, she would talk me out of things like sports and other activities. I was either too small or not skilled enough to do it. No woman was good enough for me. Going to university was "the wall" I needed to keep my mother at a safe distance. Once that wall was built and i realized I could accomplish things, she told me I couldn't do. I found out I could do anything and kept my wall up around her. Today I have a very distant relationship with my mother as a father of two girls some say i give them too much freedom but i think it's safe to say they will never build a wall and try to shut me out for the things I've done. This song is deeply personal as some in my life don't realize that not all mothers are saints that their protection isn't always a good thing. It scars you for life and that is the basis of this song and this album.

It is difficult to get the metaphor from just one song on the album, as many commenters have said. YOU got it in one song. Props to you. Joy, Love, and Happiness.

As long ago this song was released, I'm willing to wait till your next journey in life to see how your views have changed when hearing thus song. Many and I won't state how many but let's agree a few people who come back to watch new viewers react to this song also had their views/feelins change. Bands only prey after highting the "Big" time after all the fame, and fortune say I'm more happy to leave something that's multigenerational. Almost like it'll last though "Time".

Every album has a story to tell. Each song on the album builds the story. I have always loved Pink Floyd. There are some albums you have to be overseas to get. I used to have a large Pink Floyd collection since I was in the US Navy. You should collect more of their albums.

"Mother, did it need to be so high?" is such an ominous and wonderfully depressing ending to this song. It captivatingly portrays the inquisitive, trusting son, who doesn't understand that his mother is doing this to him. Such a heartbreaking lyric.😔

I think this song speaks a lot to the state of today's youth. Overprotective and not taught the real challenges in life, but their parents' weaknesses and social shortsightedness.

The entire TheWall movie, which is excellent imo, is posted here for viewing on YT! Highly recommended.
Nice reaction, with enough attention to Waters' cutting sociopolitical lyrics, beginning with "Mother do you think they'll drop the [atomic] bomb?"

The initial idea of Pink walling himself in came from a particularly tetchy concert in Montreal I think on the Animals tour. Roger got increasingly pissed off with the crowd, he felt they should behave and just listen to the music the band had prepared, instead they were restive and just shouting out to demand the songs they wanted to be played. It came to a head and Roger spat at some people in the crowd, and said afterwards he wanted to put a wall across the front of the stage to keep the crowd out. The whole concept grew from there. I'd definitely agree with everyone else out there who says you ought to listen to the whole album. Only really this and Comfortably Numb stand on their own, but they open up to a whole new level in the context of the story arc.

Because of heartbreak, betrayal, disappointment, fear of rejection, etc. , we all build our own wall to keep us safe.

i think he's talking about all mother's combined, some are great, some are insane, but most are in the middle, so the song relates with everybody. Mother and child relationships are probably the most complex there is and will ever be

As a mini-encapsulation of the entire album, the ideal follow up song for this is Hey You. It shows the eventual fallout from here. Comfortably Numb fits right in the middle if you want to add a third. 😁
