Exhaust manifolds ceramic coated, a mini starter, and a clutch fan with a shroud.

I've been building and using tow vehicles for 50 years and just like all the other comments, I have always used a thick radiator, a factory/proper shroud, and an engine driven fan. No overheating. Also, I've fixed many burnt up relays, connections, and wiring on add-on electric fans on customer's cars.

There is a reason the 454 trucks use a factory clutch type mechanical fans. Cause they work.
Everyone I know has issues with electric fans. Factory clutch type fans work just fine for big blocks in all the 454ss trucks I know.
I run the 454 or 2500 series size radiator in my small block truck. Cause it’s hot in Texas. Still run the factory style clutch fan, the heavy duty model clutch. 100 degree plus weather, humid and 180 sitting in traffic. No issues.
And no drain on the electrical system.
    Just suggestions.

I have an 88 Squarebody Crew Cab dually. It has the 454 tbi with th400 trans. Currently, it has an aluminum 3 row radiator in it. 180 thermostat, heavy-duty water pump along with heavy duty clutch fan and factory shroud. It has the trans lines hooked to the radiator, but they also go through an external trans cooler. The factory electric pusher fan went bad. So I wired in a new fan that runs as soon as the ignition is on. Idling it runs around 180, running at highway speed empty runs about 200. But towing my 5th wheel on a summer day, it will get up to 230. I just purchased a be cool aluminum 2 row to see if that helps. Also thinking about switching out the external trans cooler for one with a fan on it. Truck has factory exhaust manifolds on it, and the passenger side has a small crack. Although I do need to get that fixed. I can't see that causing the truck to run that hot. Any thoughts on what might help cool it down.

Suggestions .. on my 94 454 with automatic transmission I found that separating the transmission out of the radiator and creating their own cooling.. I use a tubular cooler and a large transmission cooler together for the transmission and closed off the ports for it in the radiator.. have had absolutely no issues with overheating.. the only thing that I have a issue with is the transmission does not get up to fully operational temperature very quickly.. transmission temp gauge is a must

Hey man I live that dually !!
At approximately the 3 minute mark I can’t help but notice the back side of the rad looks to be covered or plugged up restricting air flow or is it just the camera playing games ?

The vortec small block starters for 1996-99 trucks are a lot smaller that traditional small block starters. Maybe check the vortec 1996-99 big block starters. It may be the same starter for both if they are a 168 flywheel.
They have this small lock washers for header bolts.

You should check out Jet Hot High Performance Coatings in Burlington,NC. They coat headers, full exhaust, and even turbos. My headers were about 550 degrees before they were coated, afterwards they are about 320 degrees.

I feel you about working on the ground. Having a lift is such a game changer. It’s been my experience that working on a dually is better on a 4 post lift. Probably not in the cards at your house, maybe a shop is in your future.

Yeah buddy love your videos and you have a great taste in trucks . I've been watching you for awhile I know you're better than working on the ground you gotta find a way to get a lift maybe outdoor lift or the quick jacks take care brother

Man I just put a Cold Case 34” rad and dual 16” Summit brand straight blade fans on my truck! Was going to go with Spal fans but for a tad more than half the price of the Spal fans, I got the Summit ones with 3 year replacement warranty. Picked up a Davis Craig 0444 controller while I was at it!
By the way, please do more of the voice you done during the shroud install 🤣

What are your thoughts about putting the mechanical fan back in? And maybay use the electrical ones as pusher helpers? IMO, I've never known anyone to have had good luck with electrical fans in the long run. Are you running the oil cooler and trans cooler in the Rad? I was just looking at Les's picture of his Camaro. He said it was hard to keep that thing cool also, and he was running electrical fan(s).

You can upgrade to the gear reduction starter from the later trucks. It's a lot smaller and more powerful.

  • @nowukno

Josh I would just go back to the og clutch fan ,maybe more blades ?? And an electric pusher fan for the front of the condencer and radiator .I had nothing but problems when I went the electric fan route. If it wasn't relay issues, it was thermo switch issues ,not worth the headache for a vehicle with that big block and your tow vehicle.

Just put the fans on a switch. Creating more things to go wrong with sensors. Plenty of drag and drivers go for simplicity... turn on vehicles and hit the switch for the fans.

You can try bypassing the radiator with the trans cooler lines running a large aux trans cooler. It should drop engine temps.

I’ve tried electric fans in the past, just to much hassle for me , put the mechanical fan back on there and you can get rid of the aspirin and call it a day, they don’t rob that much power, is there a reason you run electric fans ?

Dual fans need to be wired like oem dual fans, both run in low and then both run in high. The point is both fans are always pulling air. Of not with one fan on, it is pulling some air through the non running fan, instead of the radiator.

Should put the clutch fan back on they move the most amount of air

How long has it been since you changed your transmission filter? A partially clogged filter will cause overheating issues.

I would try removing the air dam off the front bumper. With truck being lowered you are not getting much fresh air under the truck to drag the hot air out of the engine compartment.

If you have your headers ceramic coated they will retain heat better than the wrap and last for the life of the headers.
