Cute Japanese and European teenage girls, wearing Wehrmacht uniforms, exploring a Japanese school in a Spanish town full of French people who make Venetian glassware on Switzerland's French border, in a country that has a soldier princess playing Amazing Grace on a trumpet, following a Shinto-Christian religion with a miko-nun, treating tropical diseases only children get, accepting yen as currency while not being able to read kanji, celebrating Spanish traditions mixed with Chinese New Years legends, shooting at African owls (that try to keep them away from schoolgirl ghosts) with German rifles, being led by a traumatized commander who is afraid of lightning, tricking Italian mobsters to keep them from moving in on the girls' bootlegging operation which finance their paycheck and supplies, playing war games with a nun and getting pissed drunk, pissing themselves and becoming baby factories for the Pope, creating biological weapons while still little kids and killing thousands, all while at war with German-speaking brown-skinned Americans with bindis on females' foreheads from a Roman Empire lead by the Pope that follows a monotheistic religion that believes in the Judgment Day, while piloting a finally fixed multi-legged, demon-slaying, weather-reporting, stealth-sniper and simulation training mode capable, AMAZING GRACE SINGING, Engrish-speaking, talking like a SPESS MEHREEN,wall-climbing, 200mm coil gun-firing "son of the god of fire" supertank from the past (aka Tank-kun).
Spoilers!!! I guess now I don't have to watch the show.
Did you literally copy the entire script of the unofficial trailer?
Watch it. It's a masterpiece. At first I thought it's just that "cute girls doing cute thing" shit. But it has quite a darker, philosophical and emotional vibe to it.
@@aashutoshkashyap1886 yeah what is it episode 6 where Felicia is talking to a dead soldier.
BABY FACTORIES?!
This show is so underrated, it makes me sad. I can't find merchandise anywhere, like it doesn't even exist.
Sound of the Sky: set in a world where the French speak Japanese, the Italians speak German, and both love Amazing Grace.
yeah... when i heard the roman girl speaking German, i thought i had to get my ears checked
It makes sense: the Holy Roman Empire which ruled most of Europe throughout the Middle Ages was German.
Loving the subtitle joke. Brilliant.
Sora no Woto to be the second anime that I've watched in my adult life (Girls und Panzer being the first) and it's a show that really tugged at my heartstrings and got me hooked on anime.
It was actually this very review that got me to watch Sora no Woto (because of the Jagdpanzer in the thumbnail, which doesn't exist in the show, btw...). I watched Girls und Panzer because I like tanks and didn't think much about it being an anime. I found this review because I was looking for Girls und Panzer stuff and decided to give Sora no Woto a shot. I found the story touching with lovable characters going about their days in an unusual setting with a bittersweet backstory.
Sora no Woto is the very reason that I now, about 1.5 years after watching Girls und Panzer for the first time, have spent many hundreds of hours watching anime and have over a hundred animes on my completed list and even more on my plan to watch list. Girls und Panzer and Sora no Woto showed me that anime is willing and capable of taking on stories and settings which are strange, even absurd, and do it really well. There is a wide range of diffrent anime and they often go where western media would never even consider going.
I hold a special place for Sora no Woto and my heart quakes everytime I hear the themesong.
I'm the exact same. I started watching anime in 2020. I found Girls und Panzer and now it's a favorite of mine. So looking for other anime like it I found Sound of the Sky. I wouldn't say I loved it but it's enjoyable and the scenery is great and was pleasantly surprised to hear Amazing Grace in the show.
I clicked on this because i saw a picture of a JagdPanther, when i got to see the anime they used spider tanks (?).. that ruined it for me
***** I also kind of hoped for a new GuP when I saw the pic.
There will be a new GuP this summer i believe
More like september I think but yes there will be a full movie, I just hoped there would be another show that handles tank-fights like gup, you know lighthearted but verry tactical and realistic.
I hope for more animes like jormungand, black lagoon and GuP
*****n Zafran Orbian Yeah, the Spider Tanks were a bit of a let down, but in other words there is a GuP Movie scheduled to be released on November 21, 2015. Hopefully it will be just as good as the anime.
That subtitle section... It tested me. It hurt, but I had to try. I didn't NEED to read them, as obviously I understood everything he was saying, but MY EYES WOULDN'T HEED MY COMMANDS.
Sarujinie Uras It’s so nice to be able to focus of more than a few things at once.
Helvitti and Romans... well this is not going to end nicely.
You messed with my brain so hard where the subtitles stopped corresponding with what your saying.
Ikr? When I realized what was happening, I laughed so hard.
Also, this is unrelated, but is that the VS symbol on your profile?
Yes it is.
I think Amazing Grace was chosen because of its meaning and who wrote it. The song is about redemption, and the writer was, to say the least, an awful person until he changed his life around after a near-death experience. This makes sense as most of the main cast is in need of redemption and is overall the main theme of the show
You can see my collection briefly in this video: /watch?v=CZdY7NC9klw
Currently that's the most you're going to see out of what I have planned.
Why we need dubs: Baccano! Nuff said.
OH MY WORD. YES
YES! THE BACCANO! DUB IS THE BEST! XD
NickxBobie especially Vino's voice actor... so much brooklyn that it's awesome
Aaaaand Cowboy Bebop...
The dub is so good that in some ways, it is better than the original Japanese. Baccano takes place in the United States and in the dub, the characters talk like Americans. The original dialogue uses terms and wording that panders to the Japanese audience.
Sound of the sky + Attack on titan + Command and conquer red alert
= awesome
You forgot Girlz Und Panzer and Call of Duty/Battlefield/Medal of Honor.
Call of duty like anime would feature a Invincible protaginast killing hundreds of barely armed civilians I was thinking of a anime with themes of conscription long periods of combat deployment and the terrifying monotony of trench life but what would a anime like that be called?
GregTheMecha Strike Witches Quest...though technically that's a fan fic and not an anime. But hey its got pretty much everything there.
if you add gundam (or aldnoah zeros mechas) onto that, then youd have a sci fi fantancy show unlike any other, and it would be GLORIOUS
This show really resonates in me. I watched it after seeing it got a Frosty from you and I am absolutely hooked. I didn't binge watch it, I spread it over 2 weeks and I watched the opening sequence each time because its simply beautiful, probably the only opening that I can watch over and over again. The ending was also amazing but it makes me wanna know how this world will end and there is more of a story to tell as you said. I also loved that moe characters and the art of the scenery. I also loved how they mashed up a bunch of different cultures like it's set in Spain, they read in French, speak in Japanese and can't read any kanji! Great review, probably my favorite one! I really didn't expect to love this show so much, thank you ^^
OH MY GOD SUCH A GOOD SHOW. I wish I hadn't finished it so fast :(
You lied. Why'd you not mention episode 6 on :(
You didn't mention all the feels.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought....
"Fuq! Is that a Jagdpanther!?!?!?"
I guess it is ;)
Jagdpanther in the thumbnail and I auto watch this
Me too!
I was sad when i found out this wasn't like Girls und Panzers.
+Roflcopter
I'm a simple man. I see WW2 tanks, I press like.
Das große A Ditto
That wasn't a Jagdpather, it was a hetzer.
I've gotten to where I've been watching subs so long, that I hardly notice them.
I can't quite watch raws either, but while I don't understand how Japanese sentence structure works because I've not studied it a day in my life...
I still got to understand key words and phrases that allow me to not have to read the entire subtitled sentences... at best I need a word or two in English and my brain already knows what the rest is.
It is difficult to describe so I hope that made sense.
Funny i haven't even watched anime that long and iv'e noticed this. certain phrases just sort of click.
"NANI????"
Sees ridiculous fan service, "I guess I'm not going to watch it"
Hears that it is like Ghibli "reconsidering"
Like Castle in the Sky, "MUST WATCH NOW!!!!!"
i just liked it for the Monty python clip
Funny, when the subtitles appeared I instinctively started reading those and used your voice more to set mood and emotion. :)
I wish we could continue getting these types of reviews
Because I'm in the process of re-building my website from the ground up and all work I do on it to keep it updated now is just more work to upgrade it later.
Later this summer the new version of the site will be up and I'll do my best to keep it fully updated.
I laughed so hard when you did that thing with the subtitles, because it's so true.
Just finished watching this on the official channel. It was a brilliant show, and probably now one of my favorite anime ever.
@GRArkada Thank you so much for reviewing this. If I hadn't seen this review I would have never discovered this anime and I ended up enjoying it hugely.
Holy shit I've only seen the intro to this video and the song is already stuck in my head.
I either buy or stream. I only download what I cannot buy or stream until such a time that I can.
cool review arkada have fun at anime north this year. maybe i'll see you there next year. can't make it this year.
Hey man I really enjoy your reviews! I enjoy anime mainly as an artform and I love those that are well done. I was wondering if you could do a review of Basilisk. I know how I feel about it, but I was wondering how you would review it. Especially since you have much more experience with anime in general.
Extremely glad I watched this review. Thanks a lot!
I love sound of the sky
Very good anime
Great review!
I remembered I had started watching this awhile back, but forgot the name. Glad you're reviewing it so now I know the name again, and that it's worth watching. Also, I had the same sort of stigma about Slice-of-life, but it came about when K-On aired the whole moe uprising started, but I've since grown fond of the genre, for the same reason you have.
I used to think watching subtitles was the "purest" way to watch a foreign language show. Then I realized that it actually isn't - it's just adding two levels of corruption rather than just one: i.e. instead of a dub, where there's just one level of corruption - the translation of the language for actors (often fine voice actors) to voice the characters, a subtitled version has the same translation corruption, AND it forces the viewer to be distracted from the intended visuals to view text, and this can be very distracting indeed. The whole problem with anime dubs is that there's the false notion that dubs are always worse, so dubs are rarely given the respect or the money that would allow them to be done well. So we get a self-fulfilling prophecy - dubs are bad because people believe dubs are bad. So we're left with the option of a bad dub or a fundamentally flawed subtitled version that is always worse than a good dub would be.
+Ian Cooper You're a fucking idiot
Julian di Jorio Ah, an ad hominem attack. How quaint. Those who use them are usually considered both to be admitting defeat and admitting intellectual inferiority. The use of profanity is not exactly the mark of a genius either.
+Ian Cooper I don't like dubs, but for me its more due to the fact that the lip syncing just feels weird for me. The lip syncing of the mouth movements usually corresponds to the amount of syllables in a line that a character has. When a line that was japanese is translated to another language, the amount of syllables changes and as a result the new lines have to be adapted and that could inadvertly change the original meaning of a sentence to a different direction. This kind of thing just tends to stick out to me wrongly as a result.
I've been watching subs since I was young so having to read the subtitle texts while watching is not at all distracting for me and is pretty natural to the point I more or less recognise quite a few lines even without subs.
HellsRaven4444 I think subtitles detract from the visuals a heck of a lot more than a dub. When you're having to ignore the screen every few seconds to focus on text, it just completely destroys the visual flow of the film. But I recognize that it's subjective. Personally, I think all foreign films should be released with optional subtitles and an optional dub. If they were, this discussion (and the ridiculous and childish abusive behavior of folks like Julian de Jorio) would be moot, because everyone would have their preference.
Ian Cooper Well that's the thing, I literally can both read the text and watch the show in one smooth operation without needing to focus on the text. I never understood why people needed to 'ignore the screen every few seconds to focus on the text'. The only way I could see that being needed is if the screen was something like a cinema screen and actually required the person to move his head slightly just to see everything.
For the option of all foreign films having the option of sub or dub, that may happen in the future. Unfortunately the cost of getting a whole new cast just for the dub version is generally not worth the return profit especially for the less popular series.
Just finished this anime, and it was beautiful. Not just visually and audially (I know that isn't a word) - though the aesthetics and art are amazing. I mean, it is about a war that will more than likely end humanity, and yet it shows how people can still live good happy lives- the main character Kanata, with her innocence and naivety is a perfect example of that (and she is adorable). And there are some really good messages throughout.
new arkada video? this week is gonna be awsome :D
will you in any future wacht kokoro connect? i will love to see a review of that show
Speaking of undubbed anime, could you review the Black Rock Shooter TV series (and OVA if you're inclined to?)
I have Black Rock Shooter on DVD and would be happy to donate
"What do you do with those people?"
Get the ovens ready.
nice catch there! I always go by outlines, so the finer details get left out when it comes to clicking a button... my mistake on the model (at least I got the Tank Destroyer part right.)
That ending song is nice on the ears.
I think the opening music for Sora no Woto is one of the best I've heard. The rythmic and catchy guitar with the fast paced flute makes a happy, but at the same time emotional song. The change of tune between the verse and the chorous creates dynamic and dramatic effects and makes the intro interesting. I also love the use of Gustav Klimt's art plus golden colors in the opening. It fits the song. Point is: The beautiful intro makes the anime more enjojable. Love the anime too by the way.
When I saw the picture for the video, at first I thought you were reviewing Girls und Panzer but when I looked closer and read the realized I was mistaken; still looks like something I might try to watch.
How many people upped there volume to hear the dubbed? lol
EVERYONE
I haven't. Is it good?? I may have to check it out.
Music in opening: The Melody of Light by Kalafina
please....d...gray...man
Can you review Seikon no Quaser.
I'd like to hear your opinions about it.
Hey Arkada, I'm curious as to what you're going to review from the anime year 2012? I did see you did a review for Sword Art Online, but I'm curious as to whether you'll do a review for something like Shinsekai Yori or Psycho-Pass. I really hope you do...because I'll be honest...Shinsekai Yori is the best anime I've seen since Steins;Gate.
HEATHEN :) The Trumpet version of Amazing Grace, was wonderful, specially in episode 13, when Kanata uses said song to stop the fighting. And Yes, I am wearing a Kilt. Yes, I wish this was dubbed, because my vision is not so good, subs can be hard to read, these where okay, even for me. Any ways, great channel. Keep up the good work.
Could you review Natsume Yuujinchou if you find enough time? I'd really like to know your opinion!
Congrats on 100 videos
is "stay frosty" from a particular anime? In Darker Than Black Maoi says a similar Frosty line in episode 13 (at least I think it was that episode...)
It's originally from Aliens. Hicks says it at some point and it caught on.
May you review shinzo and/or Oban Star Racers. I thank you if you could. I think you'll do an epic review on them.
I watched this whole show after this review thanks for a great show man
Hey Arkada, I really like that ''coat'' you are wearing.
Could you tell me if and where I can order it?
And keep up the great work
People who wont watch a show simply because its dubbed don't really like anime anyway.
+Nathan B Or they like subbed better?..
+Nathan B
So true.
+Nathan B
Are you just here to troll, or do you have any evidence for your claim? Because what you write is complete nonsense.
AugustusCaesar
He meant that if people who want to watch it don't and complain that its not dubbed then they don't like anime.
He's basically saying if you care so much what language you're watching it in you don't really care at all.
ApocalypticMagicalBoy
Okay, and that's complete nonsense. I love Anime, but can't watch dubs. I just can't. Doesn't mean I like Anime less than you or him, just different. Just as this or another person might only like watching Anime Dubs, I only watch Anime with subs. Some enjoy both. And all three methods are perfectly fine, and no one likes Anime more or less than the other ones. Saying otherwise is stupid and plainly childish.
There are some shows I would love to watch with my cousins, but can't because they're 8 and 10 and can't keep up with the subtitles. Like, I can only show them one season of the entirety of Pretty Cure because only the first one was dubbed, and not very well I might add.
im so very happy to see laputa being referenced. it is one of, if not my favorite anime of all time (its at the very least in the top five close to number one). its just so good and never gets any credit because of the time of its release
Sora no Woto Blu-ray is now out
Is it bad if I watch it online for free.. then i buy the blu-ray when it comes out. I've been doing that for a year now >.
I can relate SO MUCH with your take on dubbing, I just can't enjoy a show fully if I have to constantly look to the bottom of the screen instead of watching what's happening on screen
Did the JG Panther have a centered gun? I thought that it was off to the left.
The JG Panzer 4's gun was off to the left, but the JG panther's gun was centered
I've gotten used to reading subs so much that somehow I'm able to read what's being said as well as see what's happening.
However, you make a good point about what the subs say and what's actually being said not always matching.
Not many people may know this, but the town of Seize is almost an exact, animated replica of the city of Cuenca in Spain. Right down to a drawing on the wall of a building. This anime has a fantastic amount of attention to detail - the weapons and vehicles used in the anime (apart from the tank) all exist in the real world. Kar 98k's, MG42's, Zundapp KS750's, BMW R75's, Kubelwagen's. The list goes on and on. Sora no Woto is definitely a great anime if you appreciate detail.
ikr so brilliant art, story, opening, character and very emotional plus epic fights with a unique style (the 3d mechanism).
PAZU! must watch that again just to listen to his trumpet music.
I gained a very important bit of information from this review. I learned how to pronounce Kureha properly.
the Klimt thing drove me crazy until I worked out what the opening reminded me of. I didnt expect to see that in such a context.
I fell in love with Gustav Klimt because of this opening sequence and that of Elfen Lied! His paintings are so damn beautiful!
As someone who supports the industry, it's nice to see people with opinions people care about saying stuff like that. Keep up the good work.
Hey Arkada! Im a new subscriber and was hoping you might some recommendations for good Mecha anime? I've watched most of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, along with the Full Metal Panic series, Gurren Laggan, and Evanglion (prolly spelled wrong). Thanks and keep up the great reviews! Stay frosty!:D
Would you please do a review on Kyou Kara Maou?
Can you make a video about your opinion of the big three (One piece, Naruto and Bleach)?
7:55 Man you hit the nail on the head there. Can't get my mom to watch Tales of the AByss or the Phoenix Wright movie :/
8:50 You've motivated me to watch this anime. I've been watching your reviews often as well as gigguk's. I've started watching Serial Experiment Lain and Steins;Gate because of you guys. Love your reviews. Keep up the great work. :3
the opening song of that anime makes me interested to watch it
I just realized ten seconds after he mentions how annoying subtitles are that he actually put subtitles at the bottom of the screen and I was reading them without even noticing. And I like subtitles because sometimes I can't understand what people are saying because I have slightly bad hearing.
I've actually been to the town that the town of this show is based off from (Cuenca, Spain). The town is gorgeous, and I've seen scenes from the show that do a FANTASTIC job at recreating it. That and this review definitely put this anime on my to-watch list.
Lol ... I'm Whatching subtitled shows so often that i was actually reading the subtitles you where integrating by 7:20 XD
There is no way one wouldn’t if one likes Anime I guess. :P
I actually really like having subtitles, as I at times don't hear what the characters are saying, or have to make sure I got something right, which leads to me rewinding.
Both has their advantages, Blu-ray is higher quality, however my only player for it is my computer therefore I'm delegated to my monitor. DVD's however allow me to relax and spread out on the couch while watching which is much more enjoyable.
So currently it could go either way.
I came for tanks. Got music.
I ALTERNATED BETWEEN LOOKING AT THE FACE AND THE DUBS WHILE ALSO LISTENING WITH AN HALF SECOND DELAY
I AM A GOD
Could you show us your anime collection
"FOR FANSERVICE" LOLZ! You never fail to crack me up, Arkada! XDDDD
Not Romans; Germans _pretending_ to be Romans.
Yea beacause the tanks their driving their tiger tanks
The MCs country uses German equipment, the Romans in this show us American equipment
"Holy roman empire", much?
Love this anime... one of my favorites!
Dubs are great… in theory. In practice, the acting is often so cringeworthy that the subs are the only viable option. The only example I can recall of the English dub acting actually being BETTER would be Fullmetal Alchemist.
i want to check this out now
i wanna see more done with the goddam spider tank at the end :( T-T
so we cant watch it? only buy it?
Arkada i would like to recommend the anime Kemono no Souja Erin.Don't know if you have heard of it, but i would like for more people to know about it!
Veeeeery clever with the subtitles thur ;D
Great review. First one of yours I've watched. Also, very well spoken and easy to understand. Sound of the Sky is a great anime and truly deserves more attention. I found it on accident and I'm glad I did. I prefer Subs unless the Dubs are done really well but even then I still prefer subs. There's just something about the original cute Japanese voices that I like. I have seen a few dubs that I actually preferred over the subs though which is rare.
Anyway, great review.
very well done as always might give this show a shot when i wont have anything to watch.
yo, arkada i was wondering if you are watching/ planning to watch "attack on titan". it's a really good show imo and do you think a review would be possible? thanks
damn it i just can't look away from he's perfect head hair....
Looks really nice, definitely watch it soon.
