    I hope you enjoyed this look at Georges Island and Fort Charlotte. This history and these forts have always fascinated me and was a great location to visit and the views of Halifax from this Island are amazing. If in Halifax most people know about the famous Citadel and it is a great place to visit but the other forts and history around the city are equally amazing to check out. I hope you all enjoyed and have a wonderful day!

    I love guided tours and this one is no exception. So much info and the guide was excellent at conveying it. The system of underground tunnels is quite well designed and was certainly capable of whistanding heavy shelling from 19th century weaponry. Amazing how quickly heavy guns and fortresses became obsolete. Great video, Wade!

      Yes it was a great tour and the fort was amazing to see especially underground. Technology advances were happening so quick so there was always upgrades to be done to keep up with it. Love these places! Take care!

    I try to watch as many of your videos as I can (even the ones I'm not sure I'll like) but this one surprised me as this quite zaney guy seemed to really inform and sell the whole experience and history of this place really well and seems like an asset to this tour. The text you overlayed on the videos were really helpful too. I hope you do more of these guided tour videos and please never stop doing these as they're great for escaping modern day problems.

    What an awesome video. I was lucky enough to go to George's Island, this summer. As a tour guide, it was very important for me to learn about that part of Halifax's defense system. You captured my experience with a well put together video. I'm going to share these videos with my fellow tour guides, with your permission. I think they would find them valuable.

    Thank you for making this video, a lot of history that can now be seen by the public. I grew up in Halifax and in the 80's we used to boat out to the island and spend the day exploring the site. It was amazing then and by the look of the video there has been a lot of up keeping. Great to see and again thank you for this video.

    Thank you for this. Grew up in Dartmouth. Only snippet of Fort Charlotte we ever seen was one grainy photo in a newspaper. Partially flooded tunnel. Rumour was there was a tunnel under the harbour and up to Citadel Hill fortification. Trivia: Up until a few years ago the drug store Eastern Passage on Shore Road had a very nice wall mural of CSS Tallahassee. Another chapter of the American Civil War relived on Canadian shores.

      You're welcome! Yes I have heard about all the rumors of tunnels all around the city. I wonder which if any are true. Thanks for the info, never heard about the mural. Very cool!

    ~ How come he didn't mention the tunnel going from the island to the Citadel on the mainland? It was walled up sometime in the late 40s I believe.

    • @ExploringwithWade
      @ExploringwithWade  2 роки тому

      He did mention about the rumors of the tunnels when I wasn't filming. They are just that, rumors until someone can show the evidence. Would love for it to be true. Very interesting. If you have more on this would love to see it.

    It sure is good that you came when you did as after Fiona, a lot of these areas don't look the same...so many of the old trees are gone. I believe the island is closed for now...just like many other places like Provincial Parks. Happy to see the tour through your lens. Take good care...Bruce and Otis

      Yea originally I was planning on coming in September at beginning of year so glad I chose when I did. I don't think halifax got it too bad but I am sure some trees were lost. I lived in Halifax when Juan Hit. That was a brutal storm.

    Dry moat - because rope ladders were a closely guarded military secret in 1850 lol. Hey. I don't think you did a segment on Fort Sackville. There is not much to look at. It is nothing more than a grassy mound surrounded by suburbia. I think there is a concrete pad remaining from who knows when. I think it was from some outbuilding that remained when someone bought the property around the Edwardian era. The greatest role for that fort was to serve as a clearance point for refugees fleeing from the Revolutionary War in the USA Northeast. Imagine a lot of these people made the journey on foot overland sometimes arriving here in the Winter. It would be very tough slogging on foot through the NE states and then through the gauntlet of Winter that is New Brunswick.

    York Redoubt has these whitewashed arched masonry galleries but they have been locked up since (?) around 1980 or so(?) When open, they were sort of used for miscellaneous storage - a very poor storage location for anything of value.
