Wow that’s actually a lot more flexible than anything we have. I think the requirement for a visual connection makes it a lot more useable and easier to use. It always did feel a bit odd that chains didn’t really have any redstone capabilities like this.
That's an interesting opinion. I myself never even considered chains to have anything to do with redstone. Just like the lanterns have almost no use. To me they were just a building block.

This is such a great idea. Just from the top of my head, I imagine an anchor being lowered from a ship, Or a flying machine ship lowering a chain with a platform on the bottom, acting as an elevator.
Another cool feature is a way to 'break' the chain with pistons. For example, by pushing the chain on its side and there is something obstructing the chain from moving, then the chain will break at that point where it is obstructed. I imagine a chain elevator or a bridge that gets built using chain segments, and then gets broken down again when retracting. Also, it would make sense that the chains -stone would work with large chains.
This makes so much sense to be in vanilla, I can't think of any downsides to this at the moment. I'm so sad now that this isn't in the game and the likelihood of it being added is pretty hazy, but you've convinced me with this demonstration and I do wish someday that they'll consider this feature alongside movable block entities.
Some additional ideas of my own that I think would be good for this: chains can connect to glazed terracotta and immovable blocks. They can then push/pull the terracotta since their attachment isn't based on being "sticky" but rather being "mounted" to it. If they attach to immovable blocks, they too become immovable. I think this would add some more nuanced use to the idea.

This is great, although, whether its in the mod, or if this does get implemented in vanilla- I think something at least indicating that the chain is connected to the piston would be good. Maybe 1 chain next to a tripwire hook in a crafting table gives a chain hook? Texture could be like a little plate attached to a hook (like a towing hook you'd see used to tow things irl). Place that on a sticky piston, attach a chain to the hook, its now considered a full block and it's able to push/pull chains. As for an implementation idea, similar to standard tripwire hooks only as tripwire takes string, the hook takes chain and can't be used to detect something passing it since its solid. I love how well this fits into vanilla. If you were willing to create a more modded version of this, I think it would be cool to add two new chain blocks. The first would be the "Chain Ball", which would be a tightly wound chain ball that would have six connection points and could act as a junction. It would be similar to regular slime blocks but would *only* connect to regular chains, since the connection points would be considered "too weak" to connect to anything else. The second would be a "Chain Pulley". It would be a junction similar to the Chain Ball, but would act more like a piston feed tape. It would be a block that could be orientated in all directions, connecting to the sides, tops, and bottoms of blocks, and would change the direction of a chain line. It would change the direction at a 90 degree angle and could be used to snake chain lines around corners. Additionally, the Chain Pulley would act sort of like a repeater and reset the push limit. The block itself would look like a small wheel mounted on a stand with chain rolling around the wheel. The stand would be the part of the texture attached to the block it is mounted on. (the Chain Pulley would be about the size of a conduit or mob head)
Another point which is satisfied by chains only. Multiple chain block look connected or 'chained' together. There is no reason why rods should hold to each other.

I think that the “stick to all” setting is the most natural as when moving things with slime blocks, honey blocks, pistons, etc. it doesn’t matter if there is a gap, so it would be pretty weird if chains were any different.
The redstone display Mumbo built times ago, and said "well it's actually pretty easy" ... "but i had to mirror all the lamps respect to their input buttons, crossing all the wirings over itselves!"
YES I've been saying this since chains were first announced! I never thought about how much needing to visually connect to blocks would change it though. It seems inconsistent to have that requirement for chains to interact with blocks but not for sticky pistons or honey or slime to interact with chains. A lot of really interesting considerations if it were to be added to vanilla! I hope Mojang is watching!
I think chains should deffinatley pull as well as push but I think they should disconnect when moved sideways. It doesn't seem right to move in that dirrection. This would also make their use case a little more specific. It could also create some interesting options because you can't disconnect slime or honey blocks.
At first I thought this might obsolete slime but I'm glad it doesn't. Please make a minecrat suggestion site post! Please! I'm not sure if it's the best way to reach the devs, but more the merrier as they say!
It's so sad when I see awesome suggestions like this one, because it's very unlikely that they will become a part of base game. But hey... One can dream, that's for sure :D
Love it, you've made a good case and convinced me. Although, it doesn't really make "physical sense" that you can push a chain, or push/pull from it's side when it doesn't connect to the piston face., but I get that it's needed for how it works. I just have a quibble with how it looks in some cases. I don't like the face of the sticky piston visible. The chains should bend in Ts or corners only to connect to piston faces, and maybe they should form some kind of gray covering for any block faces they connect to.
I think this should be in the game! I would add the pushing and pulling around corners too, using a rotater or something, and maybe a wind/spindle? I would also like it if the chain block wouldn't be included in the overal pushing/pulling limit of the pistons, because it isn't a full block, only a small connection. Or an independent push/pull limit for the chains + the already existing push/pull limit, if you know what I mean.
I love this idea. I was thinking about this when chains were introduced, and even if they aren't added to vanilla, they will be added to my vanilla since I already use the Carpet mod.
This is an amazing idea, respects the game limitation, obvious how it works. It has a vanilla feel to it. I just have a few questions, I saw you were using sticky pistons in your contraptions, for example at 4:15, why would it need to be sticky? it is connected to the piston with an obvious connection. It should be usable with a normal one there. And by starting to go in this direction, what is the behavior with the 1tick piston extension that un-sticks blocks with sticky pistons? Having the same releasing behavior would be understandable, but not having it too as well, as it is attached, not just stick to it, and provide its own challenge if not being able to release at all. However, how does it reacts with a sticky piston? which prevails? I do not know what is better for gameplay.
Maybe if it only stuck to the two 'small ends'. Right now it doesn't look right with pistons pushing into the width side of them. If Mogang takes this idea they will probably make the chain into and 'X' so this looks correct (as this is a notable chain-ge I doubt they would add it looking wonky) and it will end up with the 'dot cross' mechanic redstone has, which I don't think it should have expecially while walking through your base right clicking your decorations and a tool for this would just be useless and clutter up your inventory,no one would carry it. Adding your chain idea will also not, as far I I can see, effect other communities making it well received. Doing this will also 'nerf' it so no one can moan it isn't 'balenced'/realistic as it makes sense making the introduction very much happily taken in by the community, making them even more up to community driven ideas. I hope this makes sense as I haven't read over it. But I think I covered most communities in Minecraft even the over thinkers. Great idea, hope something comes of this!
My couple of opinions on what I would change: Chains being pushed from their side don't stick to other blocks. It looks pretty silly, and this "nerf" can be sidestepped easily by replacing the first chain with a block. See the diagram: (P for piston, B for block, - for chain) - - B Doesn't move B or the right chain, but does move the left chain P B - B Moves both B's and the chain P And as someone else suggested, a chain being pushed sideways into a block could break the chain. Corner case could be: B B - B P Would this break the chain? Only move the left B? I'm not sure.
This wouldn't work the way you think, at least not if you wanted to keep it consistent with slime/honey mechanics. In case 2, if you put a slime block where the chain is it wouldn't move the whole structure. It would only move the block on the left.
Alternating slime/honey contraptions are extremely powerful already, I don't think the synchronization requirement is too harsh. A possible way to nerf/change chains so they are even more distinguished from slime/honey: Make it "weak" when pushed in the 10:23 direction, so it would break apart from other blocks. It only sticks when the direction of motion is along the chain: direct compression/tension. This would make chain flying machines impossible, but I think it would make doors and pop-up-crafting-table type contraptions more interesting when chain... "chains"... could be easily automatically separated. Chainstone signals would still work, and this might make some interesting and/or/xor gates possible.
I think this should be a craftable item. Chain + slime ball = chain with sticky ends. Makes it a little harder to obtain for using it mechanically, but also still leaves its base state of being purely decorative intact.
Only three minutes into the video and already liking it because it's already looking solid and I want this video to get big enough for Mojang to see it Edit: Saw the whole video. Yeah it's solid
This is a great idea, but like others mentioned pushing/pulling from the chain sides should 'break' that chainBlock out of the link. With clever feed tapes it would enable one to make retracting/extending chain lengths, while keeping sideways linking a property of honey and slime blocks.
I really like the concept but I think it would be even more interesting if you could push chains into each other what I mean by that ist that if you pull on chain they pull just like slimeblocks without the sideblocks, but if you push them, the chain doesnt, unlike any other minecraft block, get pushed but instead winds itself up and stores on of the segments in another one. by this you could store 12 chainsegments in one block and if you connect a flyingmachine to the bundle it would unwind the chain segment by segment until the bundle is emptyand the chain would try to pull the block attached to it. The behavior would fit real chains much better and the behavior described in your video could be realized by implementing directional iron bars (i know they connect also sideways but it was the first thing that came to mind) Thanks for reading
I personally think you can pull Chains, but not push. Chains not visually connect, shouldn't it just move that one chain and not it's connected chains and blocks(like it is already). Just a couple thoughts.
This was my gut reaction, But then I couldn't work out a good implementation that would have positive redstone effects. What would happen if you tried to push chain? it fail to push? drops chain on the ground? Create a new 'droopy chain' block? What happens when droopy chain gets pushed? etc.
I agree a lot! As another said here, chains should perform pulls (breaking the closest piece to the piston when pushed) but rods may perform pushes (or both). Now we're starting to overpower it maybe in Mojang dev's head, but it makes a lot of sense imho!
I really like this idea, although i think it would be better if chains were pushed or pulled on the side where it is not visually connected it should move only the chain. If they function like they show at 3:44 it should disconnect from the chain next to it and act like pushing a block of the side of a slime / honey block
I would think not, as even slime or honey doesn't allow for that functionality, but I would say that a non-sticky piston, provided it's not extended, would be able to be _pulled_ by a sticky piston, as even slime and honey have that function.
I don't think it should. It diverges from the vanilla slime/honey behavior, it gives us fewer options because you can't decide to retract the chain or not, and it replaces slime even further (since you won't need sticky pistons as much).
@@zackglenn2847 I kinda agree. But piston, regular block, chain, etc... would restore the vanilla behaviour. I wonder whether chains allowing an alternative to slime for retracting might be interesting in the early game. I also wonder whether the aesthetics of a non-sticky piston might be preferable in some circumstances?...
Here, take this comment to help your video to hopefully help Mojang see this video! I really want to see this implimentation of chainstone in the game, it looks amazing
Hallo, Gnembon! Amazing production quality as always. Have you started an issue on Mojang's JIRA? AFAIK, that's the only way how to gwt stuff into the game. If you have, leave a link, I'm going to upvote it like crazy!
I would love to see this, but I do believe that it should only work if the chain connects to the face of the sticky piston. Yes, this would be more limiting and go against current Minecraft physics, but it would make more sense to new players. Pushing a chain sideways could instead break the chain and drop it on the floor. We could even go as far as dispensers being able to place chains on their face that we could then use in contraptions. PS. Please tell me I'm stupid in a friendly manner, I love to hear different views
Given Mojang's recent changes to redstone mechanics in 1.16 to make it more consistent/accessible to new players, I think this would *link* (sorry) up quite nicely with their existing design approach. This is one of the most vanilla-esque features I've seen come from a mod and it just fits in with the game so well. I really hope this finds its way to vanilla!
If there was a way to disconnect chains from each other automatically, you could make extremely cool elevators with this. For example: You could build a pulley-like elevator at the top of a tower, that pushes the chains into a piston bolt powered battery when retracting, and pushes the chains down when extending. At the bottom would be a sticky platform that connects to the chains. Obviously this would require the push limit to only consider the blocks of the platform for its calculation and not the chains themselves, which would create other issues. Maybe calculate the push limit separately and more generous for chains?
It would be good (but it would take a mod for that I think) to make sure to do as for the candle, if we add a chain on the same block (with sneak) it adds a chain to form an intersection to be able to hang 4 faces without the other two. Such putting chains in a dispenser would make them come out (as for the shulker) and would push the block in front of dispensing. Beyond 16 blocks, the ropes would no longer grow. Except that a bit like the repeater, an object resembling the stone cutter (the pulley) would allow you to go further with the chain (but if an object is hooked reaches the pulley, the block and the chain stops) By making sure that the ropes are stackable by 16, we could choose the direction that the rope takes to the pulley according to their placement in the dispenser

Never thought of this but such a genius idea. And you've already implemented it! Amazing!
I think chains should deffinatley pull as well as push but I think they should disconnect when moved sideways. It doesn't seem right to move in that dirrection. This would also make their use case a little more specific.
It could also create some interesting options because you can't disconnect slime or honey blocks.
I 100% agree! I've been wanting this since they added chains, and I think your ideas for implementation are great!
These changes are really interesting, as usual from Gnembon^^ 👍
I not only love your redstone ideas and inventions... Your deep wise voice is so satisfying
At first I thought this might obsolete slime but I'm glad it doesn't. Please make a minecrat suggestion site post! Please! I'm not sure if it's the best way to reach the devs, but more the merrier as they say!
This feels like a great addition.. would love for them to implement a version of this in the vanilla game. It feels quite vanilla. I'm a fan
Gnembon convinces me ALWAYS, whatever he is talking about.
"im not an expert" ok dude lol :D
i love the idea and i think it would be a great addition to vanilla
A similar idea was implemented in the Quark mod, which also comes with a lot of other vanilla+ features.
This is a really cool idea, I hope no hang sees this and we can get it added into the game, keep up the great work
Very inventive, reasonable, and impressive video! Hope Mojang sees this!
I can feel mumbo's confused excitement continents away a video is inevitable
It's so sad when I see awesome suggestions like this one, because it's very unlikely that they will become a part of base game. But hey... One can dream, that's for sure :D
Several features of carpetmod have been added to vanilla
@@rubixtheslime Really? Which ones? Do you recall?
That's why gnembon is a God and made carpet.
Minecraft is truly infinite with mods.
@@rubixtheslime Please elaborate
@@watema3381 in the video where Gnembon introduces carpetmod, he mentions that several features of carpetmod have been added to vanilla
Love it! This and movable tile entities! (and renewable sand)
This awesome. I was curious as to what mere chains could do but this is awesome.
Only the fact that you could make screens like you did makes it worth it.
Imagine the elevators you could make from this. the chains could be the elevator cables!
Super neat. I love your implementation. I hope it gets added.
The music in your videos is simply superior
I love this idea. I was thinking about this when chains were introduced, and even if they aren't added to vanilla, they will be added to my vanilla since I already use the Carpet mod.
Thats the greatest idea in a long time
OMFG YES WE NEED THIS
Man I only wanted to watch a couple of minutes then leave but as usual gnembon kept me watching through the whole thing
7:37 thats amazing
This is a super cool mechanic great idea!
My couple of opinions on what I would change:
Chains being pushed from their side don't stick to other blocks. It looks pretty silly, and this "nerf" can be sidestepped easily by replacing the first chain with a block. See the diagram: (P for piston, B for block, - for chain)
- - B Doesn't move B or the right chain, but does move the left chain
P
B - B Moves both B's and the chain
P
And as someone else suggested, a chain being pushed sideways into a block could break the chain. Corner case could be:
B
B - B
P
Would this break the chain? Only move the left B? I'm not sure.
This wouldn't work the way you think, at least not if you wanted to keep it consistent with slime/honey mechanics. In case 2, if you put a slime block where the chain is it wouldn't move the whole structure. It would only move the block on the left.
@@zackglenn2847 Anyway, chains breaking when pushed makes a lot of sense.
Chainstone is pretty minecrafty and they make sense too love it...
Alternating slime/honey contraptions are extremely powerful already, I don't think the synchronization requirement is too harsh.
A possible way to nerf/change chains so they are even more distinguished from slime/honey:
Make it "weak" when pushed in the 10:23 direction, so it would break apart from other blocks.
Only three minutes into the video and already liking it because it's already looking solid and I want this video to get big enough for Mojang to see it
Edit: Saw the whole video. Yeah it's solid
“I’m not an expert”- gnembom
Actually yes you are
Kinda reminds me of "corporations are people too" :p
This is such a good idea!
I even doubt it would be difficult to implement.
This is a great idea, but like others mentioned pushing/pulling from the chain sides should 'break' that chainBlock out of the link. With clever feed tapes it would enable one to make retracting/extending chain lengths, while keeping sideways linking a property of honey and slime blocks.
Absolutely LOVE this!!
I really like the concept but I think it would be even more interesting if you could push chains into each other
what I mean by that ist that if you pull on chain they pull just like slimeblocks without the sideblocks, but if you push them, the chain doesnt, unlike any other minecraft block, get pushed but instead winds itself up and stores on of the segments in another one. by this you could store 12 chainsegments in one block and if you connect a flyingmachine to the bundle it would unwind the chain segment by segment until the bundle is emptyand the chain would try to pull the block attached to it. The behavior would fit real chains much better and the behavior described in your video could be realized by implementing directional iron bars (i know they connect also sideways but it was the first thing that came to mind)
Thanks for reading
I so wanted this in the 1.16 update and will definitely be applying it.
Nice combination of Vivaldi and Mozart :]
Wow this is really well made! I hope Mojang adds it.
Two way flying machine is already made and people are now trying to figure out the three way machine without slime/honey blocks
Very well thought out. I endorse this tech.
I really like this idea, although i think it would be better if chains were pushed or pulled on the side where it is not visually connected it should move only the chain. If they function like they show at 3:44 it should disconnect from the chain next to it and act like pushing a block of the side of a slime / honey block
Would the chain connect to a non-sticky piston head? I.e. Could a non-sticky piston retract a chain, therefore?
Mumbo loves it so much he made an episode dedicated to what he could do with it.
11:28 "im not an expert" you what mate
Let’s try and get this into Caves and Cliffs
this looks great!
This would be so nice, excellent idea.
there was a mod called chains-link that did this, however it was somewhat buggy. thanks for adding this to carpet!
oh, looks like you mentioned this, whoops
This is one of those things where one would think it would already be in game but wouldn't think of themselves
Perhaps if the chain was powered by redstone it could detach from its neighboring chains
Minecraft block: exists
Redstone engineers: it’s free real estate
Very minecrafty way to implement this. Nice
This is a great idea and implementation!!
The only thing I can say is: OF COURSE!
Some Devs must be jealous of how they didn't come up with that.
Except that a bit like the repeater, an object resembling the stone cutter (the pulley) would allow you to go further with the chain (but if an object is hooked reaches the pulley, the block and the chain stops)
By making sure that the ropes are stackable by 16, we could choose the direction that the rope takes to the pulley according to their placement in the dispenser
