Just had mine done a week ago at St Lukes in Manila. I went with the multi focal lenses. Very happy with the outcome, can see 20/20 and read the smallest text on the test card. Didn't notice before surgery but when in his office for my follow up visit I noticed his diploma from Harvard Medical School.

I was put on statins after getting a pacemaker last year in the US. I stopped taking them after a few months after countless stories of the issues they cause. I'm no doctor but I'm very skeptical of a lot of the meds that are foisted upon us in the name of good health when it's in the name of good profits.
My situation was unusual. I was with my wife in Davao last year and she insisted I get a full physical with blood work. All my numbers were decent, a little improvement needed here and there. This was in March '23. Fast forward to Oct '23, I was fighting a persistent cold r so we went to a dr's office in a hospital here in Cavite. They checked my vitals, told me to sit down and they admitted me. I had a low heart rate in the 30s. My daughter in the US is a RN at a cardio hospital in Texas, so she told me to get out there immediately. I ended up getting a pacemaker 6 days after getting on Medicare after turning 65 in November. I'm doing great now and then (kids said I got my color back immediately). I felt good enough to drive OTR trucking for a friend for 3 months before returning to the Philippines. My wife is all over me like a cheap suit to eat and live healthy. I never smoked and now my coffee is down to one 16oz cup per day.
BTW Paul, I was in Dumaguete for a week plus a couple of weeks ago. My wife is a marketing manager and her co has an office there. I don't know if you have a coffee shop you like to hang out at.. maybe we could meet up? I saw so many foreigners there vs here in Cavite.

Some suggestions Paul, from experience and a clinical background:
-Blood pressure goes up and down by about 20 points or more in a circadian (daily) cycle - morning is high - the "morning surge" - and afternoon/evening is lower. If you measure before noon say at 11 am it will be higher than at say 3 pm, eg, 150 vs. 130. When did you see the doc? Use your monitor (buy one) to check in evening as well as morning. Also, "white coat effect" from being nervous in doctor's clinic often will raise it by 10 or more. They rarely admit to this. And have them take it at least twice if not three times for an average. Once only could give an error. Hypertension is defined as a morning BP of 135/85 at home or 140/90 at the clinic but you may have had a white-coat effect. Essential that you repeat your test. Repeat or buy a cheap monitor before concluding anything.
-I have had both eyes cataract surgery. Mono as you called it is simpler, cheaper, and less side effects/problems than multifocal so a good choice. Many complain about the multifocal and they are always under research and development to try to improve them.
-You could even do mono-far in one eye and mono-near in the other. I have that. It allows reading _and_ seeing distance although if you don't mind glasses all the time, your vision will be perfect. But _without glasses you will NOT need glasses to read_ normal print size as your mono-near will do nicely. Ask about this - it's called "monovision" (just to be confusing) but it means each eye is set up with a lens for a different distance. It works well without glasses and with glasses you will have better than 20-20 vision. (Hint: J&J Technis zcboo model is a simple, well-tested, highly popular lens, rather than some other weird model or brand they might suggest to you - ask them about this one).
-Statins have many good side-effects *including anti-cancer benefits* as they are increasingly finding out...so don't dismiss them. Yes, you have not been given statins for BP but probably ACE, ARB, or diuretics. Again, you may not even need them depending on your true BP. Some may be more effective than others and you may need to have them let you try several. ACE pills can cause an itchy throat. Check your BP at different times of the day and certainly not just after 2 coffees and a stressful trip. Buy your own $40 blood pressure monitor and show your doc pics of your own readings with time taken (or the average).
-Quit smoking (and any heavy drinking) and you may be able to avoid BP pills altogether.
-I have had a couple of retinal tears too. If your doc says he can fix these too then he is likely a well-experienced retinal surgeon and will be able to do a simple cataract operation with his eyes closed although stay awake during it and ask him to tell you what he's doing so you know he is not sleeping. I would be keen to know his name in case I need him one day if I am in PH.

G'day Paul and Mae. I had cataract surgery in 2022 at the Perth Eye Hospital in Western Australia. They didn't appreciate my pirate jokes after the surgery or my referring to the cafe where I had to wait to be picked up after the surgery as the Cyclops Cafe. They did my Left eye first and then right eye a week later. Make sure you can get the post-surgical eye drops in Dumaguete before the surgery. Also, you may find yourself a candidate for a 3rd surgery after the first two, but this will only become apparent post-surgery. You may find that you start seeing floaters in your eyes after the surgery. They were there before but you couldn't see them. To fix this they have to replace all the goop/gel in your eyeball. I have them in my right eye but the left eye is fine. Keeps me in practice with my Australian Salute when I forget they are just floaters. Good luck.

I noticed several things in your video, Paul. First of all, quitting smoking only works if YOU want to. I smoked for 20 years and went through the incessant nagging of family, friends, coworkers, and patients to quit. I was a Medical Assistant, X-ray Tech, and finally an Emergency Room RN after military service, so I certainly knew better. I finally quit when my (now ex-wife) popped up pregnant. I was 42. The first 6 months was extremely tough. Constant cravings, developed a really bad producive cough about 6 weeks after stopping that lasted 3 weeks. Once the cough cleared up, I started noticing that food was more flavorful and I could smell the rose bushes and fresh cut grass. That I wasn't winded after 2 flights of stairs, or after finishing a 2 minute cycle of chest compressions performing CPR on a patient. After a year, I could not stand the smell of cigarettes to the point of causing nausea. My son is about to turn 12 and is my most cherished accomplishment. Enough of that though, you are an intelligent man and you will make your choice.
Okay, the next thing I noticed is that your Primary Care Doctor put you through all the testing for SURGICAL CLEARANCE, not just medical clearance, which is used for local anesthesia. I'm not a gambling man, but I'm willing to bet that your PCP just took the opportunity to run a full medical checkup because you are stubborn and noncompliant. You probably hadn't been in for a while. All the testing that was completed is recommended as part of an annual medical screening once you have enough birthdays under your belt.
Next.... take that BP pill. At least till you quit smoking. Don't worry about the coffee until you beat the cigs, one thing at a time. And caffeine is life!
You are going to love your fresh eyes.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's the case here.
When doctors perform surgeries, they usually rent an operating room for a day or a half day. It's expensive to keep a room in a properly sterile state, so it's more cost efficient to rent as needed than to own their own. Also, they try to maximize that cost efficiency by booking surgeries back to back as much as possible. The doctor doesn't even leave the room, they just have the nurses wheel the patients in and out.
They had probably booked a patient temporarly pending payment, and the patient couldn't make payment in time so they lost the appointment.
Also consider that Paul was already sold on the whole deal, so if anything they'd use that openng to sell another patient who was undecided.

In my lifetime I know 7 people who are not here anymore because they didn’t take their Blood Pressure and Cholesterol medications. I take my medication religiously because I love myself and am not arrogant to play doctor. If you still only eat chicken your blood sugar is will be ok. Otherwise you may have a glitch with your blood sugar. Best wishes with your tests. I just had thorough testing and all was great but I am very conscious with my lifestyle and daily exercise.

Blood pressure med is different from a statin. Not taking the statin will not increase your BP. It is for lowering your cholesterol..
I agree with you on not taking the statin. I got on keto and my cholesterol went way down, so my doc took me off the statin..

I remember watching this TV show with two of the best plastic surgeons in the country in Beverly hills was called Botched. They take cases of other surgeons mess ups and tried to fix them. One was nose and face other one was breast and tommy. One of the things I remember they always asked the patients after the surgery was to stop smoking because it would restrict the blood flow to the skin and could cause the skin to turn black and die. Even if they stopped smoking temporarily. You might want to think about that for your facial surgery.

  • @zipcode9

Im glad you got the surgery scheduled. I had both eyes done with the most expensive lenses in the US and I paid $3800 for those lenses. So your most expensive lenses in the Phillipines are a little higher priced. But that is a good price you are paying for the mono lenses, which in the US are completely paid for with Medicare.
Just remember to use eye drops in your eyes after you get the new lenses, it's very important to continue that forever. Prevents dry eyes and keeps those new lenses in great shape. Glad you have confidence in your eye dr. Everything will be fine and you will love restoring your vision. Best of luck to you Paul.

Good luck. I think it's great that we live in an age where they can correct cataract problems. I had my eyes operated on 8 months ago by Kaiser in California. It took 3 months just to schedule the surgery. It's takes time to schedule cataract surgery because it's the most popular elective surgery.

Hey Paul, I live in Australia, after seeing a clip on youtube from the US, I decided to mix & match lenses, i.e. Trifocal in my non-dominant eye and monofocal in my dominant eye. The idea was to have one eye better at reading and the other better at medium to long distance vision. It worked out perfect for me, I'm completely glasses free now.

I had emergency, as opposed to elective, surgery in the Philippines, following a traffic accident so I really had no choice about where I was treated. I am fully insured, so cost was not an issue. It's simple; get comprehensive medical insurance, it's only about USD1000 p.a. (I must also add that my wife and I own a block of bedsits near the hospital, which we rent out to the nurses at a decent rate, so they weren't going to cut any corners with my care. Maybe they feared a rent increase or eviction if things went bad!).

Hi Paul. Longtime subscriber here who’s been quietly been watching your video from the comfort of San Diego,CA, Pahoa, Hawaii, or from areas of the Philippines where I have been these last two months - including Your home city of Dumaguete where I’m at as of this writing. FYI I had my cataract surgery performed a year and a half ago😊. The surgery to both eyes was done simultaneously with no thirty day separation. I chose mono lens giving me 20/20 vision and requiring only low powered spectacles for reading. Medicare fully covered the entire procedure. NOTE: for me, my glucose level was required to be at acceptable level before surgery was performed.

My daily BP average over the past 3-weeks is 142/87. My diet is terrible, I'm overweight, an insomniac, enjoy beer, and drink gallons of black coffee but at least I don't smoke!!! My Dad fought in Europe during WWII and came home a chain smoker. He stopped cold turkey in the mid-1960s when the health consequences became known. Greatest generation folks were stronger than us wimps today. They didn't ignore challenges, they defeated them.

Aaah the joy of aging! I'm also a 2 on the cataract scale. Seeing the optometrist next month to set up an appointment with the surgeon next month. She told me in May that the multi focal lenses with give you a 18/20 on both near and far vision (I also have astigmatisms). I will discuss this with the surgeon. I'm told there will be about a 6 month wait for the surgery. As for cost as I'm in Canada at lest he basic lenses are covered by our medicare system. The post op will also be covered. I'll be following up on your progress. Friends who have had the surgery are happy but do mention the halo effect in bright lights. I'm starting to get use to it! Bet of luck. G in Montreal

In the 2.5 yrs i have lived in the philippines, i have not found a single person who took pride in his work and tried to the best of his ability. If u had same experience as me, get it done in the U.S. Elective surgery should never be trusted to a doctor in philippines.

I work in healthcare in California. The Filipino nurses here are no different. All these vloggers talk about Filipinas like they're the special forces of nursing. What a laugh. They do the bare minimum to keep their jobs. Good luck getting a Filipino to advocate for you and argue with a doctor. Bitchy white karens are the best nurses because they enjoy confrontation with the physicians.
