Not NASA punk, but NASA - Cique
Only og’s remember when it was called I played Starfield for two weeks - It was good.
I think he's calling it Nasa-Punk as an aesthetic like you would Steampunk or Dieselpunk; neither of which are referring to the -punk postfix as a rebellious nature, but rather as "going all in" on that particular fixation to the ninth degree. All of which are, yes, subsets of retro-futurism; in this case, what a kid in the 80s and early 90s would have expected the future of space to look like. I know you only briefly went on the topic, but thought I'd put some thoughts here to flesh it out a bit.
You're not incorrect, but even the book that popularized the term "steampunk" (despite only being used as a way for the author to describe the setting in a letter, and not being used in the original book itself) still had strong commentary on the industrial revolution. I guess at this point, I'm really curious to know when the suffix "-punk" started to be used solely to describe an overpowering aesthetic more than anything.
Go figure the face of a big company is sanitizing anti-corporate ideas while piggybacking something trendy.
@@ThatTravGuy I like `-core` as a suffix for things that use an aesthetic but don't have the commentary. "webcore" "horrorcore" that sort of thing. calling this game Nasacore would make sense from what I've seen of it.
Postfix 💀💀💀
@@Blankult yea bro I was thinking the same thing 😭
Edit: I looked it up and I think he used it correctly
😂 I played ftl growing up and then I did actually get a computer science degree so spot on.
Good to know what this game could entail. I wasn't initially sold on this game, but I figured this game would just be Skyrim exploration and sci-fi combat, but with No Man's Sky scope of scale. But seeing that this game could be worth the mindless hours of playtime might make it worth it. Plus, I wanna see my own Beyblade notebooks.
Very informative, also great editing... I heard the glitches have been mostly trivial or just funny, so that's good to hear... Cheers
I mean that's how it's been in every Bethesda developed game, well except for 76 but that wasn't developed by the same development office. Yet somehow people act like their games are straight unplayable. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4 were all perfectly playable at launch just filled with with little bugs that were more funny than not.
@@Gatorade69 well, that's also good to read mate, and yeah usually people exaggerate with the Bethesda trademark glitches... Cheers
you have single-handedly given me interest in this game
4:03 For an in depth discussion and overanalysis of the term punk, i recommend watching Tim Rogers' Action Button review of Cyberpunk 2077, specifically story #6.
yo love your content man glad to see a new upload
"I cannot wait to spend more time playing this game"
Well shit, I might actually have to buy it now
wow my sister in christ you are absolutely not beating the egg allegations
You can use arrow keys to allocate ship power
this game would be cool but uh 170 gigabytes is a lot of my hard drive lol
Of course, that also means it won't be getting a physical release.
@@oriongear2499 it does have a physical “disc” edition though …….you can go buy it right now if you want lol
170? bros did NOT optimise 💀
Hell yeah a new Trav video
Aight. I was already gonna buy the game eventually, but now i wanna do it sooner. Thanks for the great video!
OK that double tap with veronica in the new vegas was amazing
Ok I’ll add it to my steam list… maybe if it’s on the winter sale I’ll get it. You’ve convinced me lol
Haven't seen a comment to this effect but the power system on the ship was lifted whole hog from the Elite games. It looks basically identical in Elite: Dangerous in particular.
Ngl I’d kinda like to see trav make a series about him playing modded fallout 4
Damn, that was fast!
huh; from what I remember the 'turns' timer IS the max number of speech 'actions' you can take - though sometimes it might refill, but it never tells you when it's going to or anything. though also it's a lot more like fallout 3's speech, where it's just random chance effectively - even the green options can fail even with the skill maxed iirc.
Hey Trav. Great video. Relevant sponsor. How are you not into triple figures already 😅. Good luck man.
I love the "its been almost a decade since Bethesdas last game fallour 4" just pretending 76 didnt exist
I almost had a gag about that but cut it
@@ThatTravGuyhonestly skipping 76 like it never happened is a better gag in itself good choice mate
Bethesda Maryland didn't develop 76. It was developed by Battlecry studios who were rebranded Bethesda Austin by Zenimax. The actual last game Bethesda Maryland (The actual office headed by Todd) developed was Fallout 4.
I loved the KSP music in the background
Woah early to a trav person video
I totally asked for this.
And then, the world roared in cheers.
Honestly? This video is the one that made me most excited for this game. It wasn't even that glowing of a review but it made it sound exactly like what I wanted.
idk the game still feels a million miles wide and two feet deep. :/
Did we watch the same video?
I feel same about the game, lot of planets, loot, ships and quests, but all the mechanics are so shallow they had to put basic things behind perks, like lockpicking or using jetpack. | can customize my ship in a thousand ways, but what is it good for when I have to fast travel everywhere, I can’t fly the ship freely and space combat is more of a very simple minigame than integral part of this universe
good video that trav girl
You already know it 😎
hell yeah, ftl:faster than light mentioned
Fallout but in space
Its so odd from all reviews I never see the role part of RPG of this game. Just a bunch of stats and perks.
Bethesda has essentially abandoned the "role" part of the role playing game
@@AnarquiaCookbook Not really, Starfield is the start of them going back to the "Role Playing" of an RPG, Fallout 4 is the only game i can think of that is not really a RPG
@@it2spooky4me79 Skyrim barely qualified
@@AnarquiaCookbook yeah, I can see your point about Skyrim, couldn't find the exact sentence to say. But I agree on Skyrim
@@it2spooky4me79 but if Starfield is getting away from the design philosophy present in Skyrim and FO4, then I'm a lot more excited
8:55 Todd Howard Jumpscare
I went from not caring much about Starfield to deciding to download it off Gamepass when I get home from work just to give it a try, great video!
Wait, you can pick 'Alien DNA' as a starting trait as if you are some kind of hybrid, but there are no sapient aliens in the game? Give me green and blue people to smooch, dammit!
7:35
why did you call me out like this...
Important question, is there any form of horse armor?
Yknow the first thing I thought when I came across your channel is "he has a bit of an egg vibe" and I thought it was just me being weird and I feel very validated to know that I was right
We STAND for the dialogue options
And KNEEL for no voice-acting
I'm still waiting for an evil walkie-talkie
9:23 Why must you call me out like this Trav
Trav did you have to call me out like that with that FTL line? Also i think this is the second time ive heard Trav use egg, its rare enough outside of the sworn circles
I refer to it as Astro-Punk without knowing if that already means something or not
Me still waiting for that pizza tower video 💀
Your gonna have to wait for it due to wario land
Did you already change the title?
21:24 trav you only fired one barrel
Do you think you would ever make a quake wars video?
Also pls mention me in your final doom video🙏
Not gonna lie, that bit about the lock picking mini game nearly sent me into orbit xD cause that is so horribly and hilariously apt for nearly EVERY ONE of their games xD
God... I cant wait to see what the Nexus has in store for this game.
Thank you for reviewing the newest game from Bethesda.
Wow they made power allocation way more complicated on pc. On console its just the dpad
bro snuck in the ksp music
Prey(2017) review when?
9:10 - 9:35 not to force any kind of assumptions on you but trav guy is really starting to sound like trav gal here
Thank for another honest review!
Next they should make Fallout but with ants.
Wasn't expecting a Strongbad video at the start of the video. Nice one.
Man I wish this was on ps5, console exclusivity is evil and sad
NASA-punk? Nah that seems NASA-core
Good jop
why do the music be this good tho
Shade thrown at Jupiter...
I am sorry for nagging you but can you pls do chex quest after doing final doom pls?
no lol
😢
What about disruptor?
Or quake 3
Maybe turok?
Were is final doom?
Bethesda is the only one where facial animations get worse over time lols
Not really. They just haven't gotten any better since Oblivion.
@@Gatorade69 they weren't that bad in new Vegas (same engine) and in Skyrim (same Dev and engine )
Now give us a Skyrim review, i dare you
Spacer punk? Like what ? Spacer's Choice?
Of all things I was expecting From this Video, a fucking PBG reference was NOT one of them.
I still haven't finished the Minecraft series. I really should.
🥚
Eh you said you would review final doom?
I got the email opportunity to review this and Quake 2 Remastered while I was working on the Final Doom videos. Because of that, I pushed Final Doom back -- it's my next video though this time for real. Even if you don't believe me, you'll see it soon!
when you said about egg allegations for a whole second I forgot egg can refer to a trans person and thought this is somehow related to Magolor, lmao
speaking of Kirby, any chances of a Kirby vid coming to this channel at any point? 👀 (doesn't even have to be lore, if you don't want to dive into this particular rabbit hole)
wouldnt really compare new vegas to skyrim. swedish fallout 4 really isnt an rpg imo
I think you missed my point lmao
Very diffrent games by very diffrent developers but also the same game formula so there ARE plenty of things to compare.
Huh. Well, I'll be. Bethesda made a real RPG for the first time in almost fifteen years. Hot damn.
I wish you would revivew the old Elder Scrolls game such as Morrowind and Oblivion.
I might!
@@ThatTravGuyThe combat on Morrowind definitely takes getting used to. It was more of an RPG so even though your attack is seen hitting the other character you can 'miss.' For many people it's a giant turn off. Everything else in the game is done pretty wonderfully though.
The "punk" suffix in sci-fi doesn't refer to an ideology or fashion, it refers to an aesthetic that defies convention. Steampunk, Dieselpunk, Arcanepunk, and Biopunk all don't have anything to do with the punk movement, they use the term as a meta-textual reference to a defiance of sci-fi norms, and because the genres all focus on cultivating a specific aesthetic over making practical sense, just like punk fashion.
Cyberpunk is the only genre with the "punk" suffix that actually incorporates real-life punk ideology and fashion. It's an outlier, and should not be used to base expectations for other "punk" genres.
egg 🥚
don't worry tho we all figure it out at different points in our lives
can starfield run skyrim?
Give it time
is bethesda gonna have an actualy good launch? holy shit im impressed, guess we will see
Was the launch of Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4 not good ? I distinctively remember the launch of all those games being good just containing the Bethesda jank people know and love. They all had a way better launch than Cyberpunk.
Or Battlefield 4, or AC:Unity.@@Gatorade69
well I'll be damn. Starfield looks really good
I'm excited for this one even though I don't think I'll play it.
It's been WAY too long since we got a good Bethesda game like Fallout or Skyrim/Elder Scrolls (I have huge nostalgia for those games), I really hope Bethesda can bounce back.
(Still waiting for the next Deus Ex game though...)
You act like Bethesda has only made bad games. Did you like Fallout 4 ? That was the last game Bethesda Maryland made. Fallout 76 wasn't developed by them. One bad game in Fallout76 and people act like they have only made bad games when every game they have actually developed reviewed very well.
@@Gatorade69 I never tried to explicitly imply we had bad Bethesda-made games (though there have always been a few titles infamously buggy on launch), but it goes without saying Bethesda is a soulless, money grubbing company (at times). Fallout 4 was a decent game with a simple story but fun RPG elements, and I actually enjoyed Fallout 76 (with a degree of irony).
When I said "bounce back," I meant that Bethesda hadn't really developed or released their own game for a while, plus all of their numerous controversies (canvas bag, the Doom Eternal soundtrack shenanigans, though it could be argued that was more of an iD problem, Fallout 76 being a grindy and glitchy mess, etc.).
Regardless of your view points, Bethesda still holds responsibility for it's controversies and short-comings, even if these happened under games where Bethesda wasn't even the developer.
@@Slasher120 That's the problem with them naming everything the same. People hear Bethesda and they instantly think Bethesda Game studios yet there's 2 parts and you are obviously talking about the publishing arm Bethesda (Zenimax). The game studio Bethesda has nothing to do with those choices. I mean it was Zenimax that forced Fallout 76 to be made, it was Zenimax that forced Arkane Austin to make Redfall because they felt they needed more online type games and loot boxes. I think now that Microsoft has taken over things will get better (They forced Arkane to take the loot boxes out of Redfall). I would say most publishers are greedy and soulless and Zenimax was definitely getting shitty but still I don't think they are near as bad as Activision/Blizzard or EA.
@@Gatorade69 Fair point, and I thank you for informing me more on the issue - but regardless Bethesda (when I say Bethesda I mean that in a vague way - just think of Bethesda and it's association with scandals rather then it being directly linked to them) has a lot of ground to recover, especially with it's inactivity gap between Fallout 4 and Starfield (there may have been other less notable games in-between, if so point it out for me), and Bethesda forcing microtransactions out of a vampire game is a huge W on their part.
I also agree that Activision/Blizzard and EA are far more petty and soulless, Activision literally sank the WFC/FOC series just because Highmoon went bankrupt.
I'll keep in mind to be more specific about the publishing arm and development arm, as both are totally different (a good example would be how the voice actors and developers for the Last of Us Part 2 had nothing to do with the very hit or miss creative decisions the directors/producers decided upon).
GAME GOOD?!
GOTTA BEAT SOME GAMES BEFORE I PLAY THIS SO IT WON'T GET MORE STUFFED!
I personally don’t see why the Skyrim locking you into a play style being a negative, and your description of the skill tree makes concerned that Starfield doubles down on the “Jack of all trades” crap that Skyrim already did too much. A somewhat restricted character is needed for interesting roleplaying. Look at Daggerfall for a good example. Yes, I’m totally embodying this videos “egg” joke lol.
Game is stinky poopy fart
I cant believe im giving todd money again 😭
Good gods this video has been buried by the algorithm so far
Edit: hehe egg Trav
You're reeeeally hanging on that "punk" off-handidly described as
Played new vegas recently and Made a female character (with the same name each time and traits that represent you) in that game.
You are doing AWFUL at beating the egg allegations
lol
no mention of the ai being just a? shame on u trav
it doesn't look too bad yet so I actually think it could be good
egg
The first video to make me actually think Starfield has some value! 🎉🎉
That bounty qiest thing is a huge spoiler bro. Damn. Would have been cool to find on my own. Not sure why reviews are doing this
It's barely a spoiler bro
blud he literally said he'd be spoiling side quests 💀
@@ThatTravGuy that is factually not barely a spoiler. Random open world events, literally surprises, are spoilers. Those moments are inherently, literally, by definition, intended to surprise you.
It's fine. But don't lie lol. Cause that's what that response just was.
@@ImTheMan0fSteelI mean he literally said he would be spoiling some side quests in the start of the video. If you are so upset about spoilers you should have clicked off there.
You probably see a commercial for a show you like (or even 'on the next episode' teasers) on TV and think the show is getting spoiled.
26 minutes, 400 views.
whats up with that, travgirl
I accidentally set it public after it was set to unlisted which can fuck up view notifications 😭
@@ThatTravGuy holy rip
Damn someone likes desu ex huh?? Lol…..well human revolution > mankind divided, that should get your juices flowin!! Although the original back in the day is still the best one lol
I would love a modern remake of the first game done competently. Don't get me wrong I love the first game and it's probably in my top 5 games but it is a bit rough to go back to. Human Revolution was a great return after Invisible War. Still haven't played much of Mankind Divided though but I liked Detroit better as a starting area.
Noooo. You have to hate it! Everyone has to hate it!! Reeeeeee!!!
I really don't get the hate for Bethesda.
One bad game in Fallout 76 (which they didn't actually develop) and people act like all they have ever released is stinkers. Every game developed by the Maryland office has scored an 8 or higher with Fallout 4 actually being their lowest rated game.
I mean Bethesda has their usual jank that people know and love but they've never had a launch as bad as Cyberpunk and yet there's still loyal CDPR simps but tons of Bethesda haters who probably have never even played a Bethesda game judging by some comments but I get it, people love negativity.
@@Gatorade69 I have two or three small issues with the game. All which can be either patched or modded with minimal effort. Beyond that.. It's quite literally Bethesda best work to date. Absolutely stunning level of depth and scale.
@@MondoMurderface I've been called a Bethesda simp for simply telling it how it is. I have some problems with their games like every Elder Scrolls game getting more simplified and simplified and I thought Fallout 4 was good but not great, mostly didn't like the story and the dialogue but I can't lie, Bethesda games can entertain for a long while and while I have gripes with the Creation engine at least it's open to modders.
Personally I really wasn't interested in Starfield but reading some reviews actually makes me want to buy the game. Too bad it takes up so much space. I need to beat a few games on my backlog and free up some space on my SSD and maybe by then I can get the game like 10%.
Glad to hear you are enjoying it. I feel Microsoft really needed the win and made them spend extra time on it as it was supposed to release much earlier.
@@Gatorade69 I would advise and NVMe if you have the room for one on your mobo. I have Starfield running on a spare NVMe with no OS files on it. It gets the entire speed of the drive to itself and reduces loading screens to a blink of an eye.
@@MondoMurderface Yeah I have 2x1tb NVME SSDs. One has the OS and games and the other (slower SSD) is for work. Like I said I just need to beat a couple of the games I have installed, uninstall them and free up some space.
well damn. now i kinda want to buy a bethesda game.
The longer I look at this the more I realize that Bethesda did what we all found impossible.
_THE NEW VEGAS SEQUEL IS HERE!_
If I get this game, you know im gonna get big iron on my hip.
