      And this is on both sides, people who like the game thinking someone saying its not for them is calling the game terrible and people who don't like the game calling a game objectively bad.
      Also what people consider terrible. Me and my friend go "dumpster diving" every so often and play actual shovelware, most of the "worst games ever" in peoples heads are actually mediocre at worst. I've played legitimate 1s or 2s out of 10, the games that literally don't start or the controls just don't work.

      It wasn’t bad at all. It could have been a bit better story wise but other than that it was a fun solid game. Make his sacrifice at the end of the main game mean something instead of being torn apart off screen

  • @EmpressInYellow
    @EmpressInYellow Місяць тому +37

    My main issue with The Callisto Protocol is that, for all it was attempting to tap into Dead Space nostalgia, the enemies are utterly forgettable. Think about Dead Space and how iconic different enemy types are - the slashers, obviously, but also the leapers, the lurkers, etc. You can recognize them each just by their silhouette.
    Callisto Protocol, by contrast, mostly has “guy with skin condition of varying severities” and “dude with two heads”.
    It is visually very impressive, though.

    Inquisition is still underrated in my book. I've replayed Origins multiple times, a true 10/10 game in my book, but Inquisition tried a lot of new things, some failed, some succeeded, but it's just a TON of fun, with a lot of solid content, quests and world building/exploration.

    • @paulnavales6469

      I wanted to love Inquisition and look past its faults like I did with DA2, but I just cant. The open world and mmo-like mechanics put me off the game completely. Once I was done with the main quest I did some of Hakon and never continued further. I didn't touch The Descent and Tresspasser.
      I was hoping to wait it out where I forgot what happened mostly in the game but EA firing all Bioware veteran devs snuffed out all hopes of me coming back to it again.
      Maybe someday, but not now.

    Inquisition is such an interesting game to be in this conversation. Cause while I agree that the discourse has collapsed around it by this point, that game won many GOTY awards the year it came out. It's wild that a game that was so successful could now be widely considered "bad" partly because of how contrarian *some of the fandom has become in recent years.

    • @matebakk5187
      @matebakk5187 Місяць тому +4

      I maybe biased as I consider it to be the best DA game yet... But even if you don't like it just on technical level it is certainly better than DA 2 (compared to it's era of course) and certainly was at least an average to good game. Haters going to hate I guess.

    • @MartianHomebody
      @MartianHomebody Місяць тому +5

      @@matebakk5187 Agreed. Personally, it's my favorite one out of the series. I love how customizable the party can be, and I'm a sucker for that stuff. So I agree Origins is probably "more important" but Inquisition just hit for me really hard. And the DLCs are fantastic.

    • @robinmattheussen2395
      @robinmattheussen2395 Місяць тому +4

      I do think it's a shame that you assume that people call it "bad" purely because they want to be contrarian. Clearly this is not the case. I recently (two months ago) played it for the first time, and I ended up putting 65 hours into it. If I wasn't willing to give the game a fair chance, I wouldn't have put that time into it. But despite putting my best foot forward, I have to say that I personally found it to be a really awful game. If I was just a hater with a predetermined opinion, I wouldn't have bothered with finishing the game like I did. The only reason I finished the game is so that I could wrap it up and form a coherent opinion of it on my own.
      I think you'll just have to accept that there are many people who genuinely do not like this game. I think being a contrarian and hating the game for the sake of it is honestly just as bad a rejecting other people opinions offhand because you can't believe there are people who just didn't get the enjoyment out of it you did. That's just not fair and not productive.
      You also claim that it is wild that such a successful game can now be considered "bad". That's honestly not wild at all. Many games are successful commercially and critically while still being very divisive. Just take DA2 for example. That did pretty well with critics and sold quite well too. But it was almost instantly maligned by fans upon its release. It's not that uncommon at all. Or take Monster Hunter World. That's one of Capcom's best selling games of all time, was critically acclaimed, and is hated with a passion by a significant portion of the fanbase (I do not agree with that, but I cannot take away their right to their own opinions). Sony dropped Demon's Souls and didn't even want to publish it outside of Japan because executives thought it was an awful game, but it became an instant cult classic upon release and is now part of a series of some of the most popular games in video game history. These things happen all the time.

    • @MartianHomebody
      @MartianHomebody Місяць тому +1

      @@robinmattheussen2395 I accept that there are people out there, like yourself, that legitimately didn't like it. Didn't say there wasn't. You're putting a lot more weight and scrutiny into the wording of my comment than even I did. If your opinion of the game isn't coming from a contrarian place, then I clearly wasn't referring to you. Relax.

    A weird one but i act really liked mafia 3. While i like the setting, time period and story the bigger reason is that i grew up poor and have never really been able to travel and see any of the places games take place in, in real life. But because one of my childhood best friends was originally from Louisiana, i DID get to go to new orleans with him and his family twice! Ill never forget playing mafia 3 and running across the french quarter/markets and thinking “if this is over here, i bet bourbon street is this direction” and i found it immediately on my first try and that was SUCH a cool feeling - being able to navigate a video game world by a real world memory.
    Also, i really like games where you hunt down bosses and/or enemy captains from a hierarchy.
    Some examples of that are - mafia 3, shadow of mordor/war, assassins creed odyssey (loved it as a full blown rpg), and of course, the old mercenaries games. While its not in depth enjoy to really capture me, i do like hunting fugitives in rise of the ronin right now.
    OH and i absolutely loved doing the optional hunts im final fantasy 12 (i have fairly limited jrpg experience but this one is my favorite!)

      While Dragon Age 2 has a lot of flaws, and that dev time they were given is just staggering, it still one of my favorite gaming experiences. To me, the biggest thing with, aside from the crunched dev cycle, is that it was just at least a decade ahead of its time with what it was trying to do and the story it told. Which I think is reflected on how massively the response to it and how it is discussed has changed over the years.
      Also, not only is the character gallery it creates magnificent, but I still count three antagonists from that game among the best I've encountered in gaming.
      Finally agreed on the Hinterlands as I would argue that it was the sole location in DAI where the story conflict actually felt realized in the area. This was due to their open world/exploration approach which meant that the locations had to be separated from the central storylines, which led to a weird sense of detachment between exploration and the main story.

      @@matebakk5187 I recently replayed Planescape for the first time in a very long time (I usually have a very good memory when it comes to video games so I tend to wait long times between replaying), and it completely holds up 100%. Since it's primarily a story-driven game, and the writing is still much better than what you'd find in most modern games, it really hasn't aged at all. And the places you visit or so unique and atmospheric, nothing really comes close honestly.
      Tides has some redeeming qualities, but ultimately it is a failure I believe. I don't really compare it to Planescape because the games honestly have almost nothing in common. You can certainly see that the game tried, but it's also clear that it just didn't receive nearly enough love from the developer. It needed a lot more time in the oven IMO.

I find it a little frustrating when somebody simply says a game is "trash" or "bad", but when someone goes into it, it really opens up both minds to new perspectives. I won't pass judgement on Starfield until I've actually played it. What put me off buying it was the ridiculous price they set it at (and so many other AAA publishers are now doing) . At minimum, it'll need to go on sale for 50% before I consider getting it. At which point, I'm sure I'll find something to enjoy.
    Broken Roads is on my Steam wishlist and despite whatever negative reviews it received, I fully intend on buying and playing it at some point.
    The Callisto Protocol isn't my kind of game so I never gave it much thought.
    I only got maybe a quarter of the way through DragonAge Inquisition before I got distracted by another game. I don't recall why I never got back to it. Some of the systems were a bit clunky (like the weapon/armor crafting and a map or two was a tad confusing) but for the most part I was enjoying the game. I was a huge fan of DA Origins and while I liked the story in DA2, I didn't care for the lazy, slightly redecorated but obviously overly reused settings. Not sure if I'll ever get back to Inquisition since the surprise reveal was spoiled for me. Also, EA's App of the moment is always annoying.
    As for The Outer Worlds, I never really forgave Obsidian for it being an Epic exclusive for such a long time. By the time it came to Steam, I was simply no longer interested. I might give it a chance eventually but there's only so much time I dedicate for gaming.

    Carving out your own story is usually where the fun is at with Starfield. Personally, I really enjoyed the wandering freelance bounty hunter angle since it leaned into what the game did well. Disabling ships, zero g boarding actions, looting contraband, eventually getting caught red handed and coerced into becoming a criminal informant made for a more memorable story than anything to do with the relics. Mods might end up having just as much draw as DLC in the long run, but that feels quite a ways off. If a modding community engages with something like Fallout 4 to the point that we're getting expansion sized mods like Fallout London a decade after release, there's a lot of potential for Starfield.

    Starfield was a fun game. I tell people if you like Fallout 3 beyond you will like Starfield. Don't think it's elite dangerous or no man's sky. The advertising might have given that impression, but the aspects that are similar to those games are not very fleshed out. But if you like meeting characters and doing missions it's a lot of fun.

    Thanks for acknowledging Starfield - undoubtedly one of the most rage-baited games of all time. A game that does *a lot* of things *very well* , but doesn’t do any single thing exceptionally well. An objectively better than average game, that’s been treated like a manure pile by ‘those parts of the Internet’.

      I think what it boils down to is expectations. I haaaaated Fallout 4 but it's a me issue, I was coming in fresh from FNV and I have come to recognize that many things were done right in that game (like gunplay), but those were the bits I didn't care about, while the bits I did care about (like writing) were basically afterthoughts.
      Ultimately, if you come in with high expectations you made for yourself, it's on you. However, if the *company* set up these expectations, as in the case of Starfield, it's absolutely on them.

    One of my favorite gaming memory is second campaign with Chris and Piers. I joined early, guy played first time. There's no Voip in this mode and we finish it all in one go, several hours without single word and never played together again. For this player his Piers were canonically real living person.

    1. Anthem - I played 18 months after release and it ran fine, all the content was there and I had fun levelling 4 javelins to 950-960 power leverl.
    2. Mass Effect: Andromeda - I played like two years after launch and it was smooth, and I liked the exploration a lot. Game lacks some polish but nothing game-breaking.

    What's considered a bad or good game is completely subjective. A well-received game doesn't automatically make it good and one that has mixed to negative reception doesn't automatically make it shit. Everyone will have a different experience with the same game. That's how life goes.
    As long as you can explain your points in a healthy, civilized manner, you shouldn't be shamed for liking or disliking something that goes against what the general public perceives a certain game. Video games are a fun hobby that shouldn't be taken so seriously to a point where people resort to being toxic when explaining why they like or dislike a game and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong and their opinion should be invalidated.
    Great vid @Mortismal Gaming! It made remember many games that I have played which may not have had overall positive reviews, yet I enjoyed playing them despite their reception. In the end, if a game is fun despite major flaws, I'll like it.

    I love Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning (or Re-reckoning as it is now). It's repetitive, ridiculous, the worldbuilding is kinda meh, but I love it, and I don't really know why. I think it's because, while it isn't the second coming of anything, it's also not horrible? Exploring the world is decent, the characters are alright, the combat is fun, you can get really good at it while not feeling like it's too easy or you didn't work for it, and you can change your build easily enough. A solid 6/7 out of ten on all accounts, unlike most "good" games, that stumble on exploration, characters, story, quests or combat, while being good at the others.

    DA:I is unironically one of my favorite games. I don't replay a ton of games because I tend to play lengthy rpgs and I've played Inquisition start to finish 3-4 times now. Honestly, I bounced off of it the first time - yea, I got stuck in the Hinterlands meme. It felt drab to say the least. But then a year or so later I picked it up, paced myself outta there and the game opened up to just be this amazing game - imo. There's not quite a game like inquisition - at least doing what it's doing the way it's doing. Grand story, fleshed out characters and branching narratives and actually the best implementation of feeling like the leader of an army in an rpg of this style.
    Game's not perfect - of course, no game is, but it does so much right that I can easily let go of what it doesn't. Seeing it on this list makes me wanna start up another playthrough lol. I respect your list - I feel like I find myself in opposition of the general narrative around a game's quality just as much as I'm in agreement. I couldn't imagine being a game reviewer - it feels like it'd stress me to no end trying to placate people especially when a game's supposed to be ''bad'' but I FEEL like it's ''good''. For example, my hot take is that AC: Odyssey is incredibly fun. Has issues. Of course it does, but the share amount of fun you can have thrashing people and putting your build together in the end game is really akin to an arpg and it's genuinely shocking how all in the game steered into it. I get that it's nothing like a traditional AC game (my fav is Black Flag), but I feel like the amount of fun that game illicits is highly underrated.

    • @fatbroccoli8
      @fatbroccoli8 18 днів тому

      I plan on giving it a shot sometime, can you elaborate on how to get the most out of it with the hinterlands stuff? I've heard multiple people mentioning it but they don't go into detail

    • @lolersthe4th880
      @lolersthe4th880 17 днів тому

      @@fatbroccoli8 So, the game is segmented into large open areas on a world map. The Hinterlands is the first stop and gives you a few ''main quests to handle'', but it's also packed with lots of busy fetch quests etc and other ''main quests'' that can keep you there for a while. My advice is that you definitely don't need to do much if any of the side stuff and just clear stuff that's clearly main quest objectives and dip out. Once you do the overarching quest opens up and you have a lot more places you can visit to further advance main quests and recruit more characters etc, which is the real meat of the game along with gearing characters and assigning builds etc.
      DA:I is a game with a very flawed opening act, but it has tons of systems to interact with, many of which have meaningful payoffs. If you've never played any of the other games in the series you'll miss out on call backs and cameos, but it genuinely doesn't impact the experience because regardless of knowing these things or not, the game will catch you up to speed.
      Overall, if you're a fan of any of Bioware's games, Inquisition is a genuinely great game in their portfolio. It has fun character progression, a pretty large cast of companions that all want different things regarding the plot and your choices do have pretty impactful outcomes on how things play out. It was hindered on release due to its opening act and likely due to open world fatigue, but it's absolutely an experience worth having if you've played a Bioware game before or even something adjacent.
      PS: It's one of those games that time really favored. Sort of like the Witcher 2, which now gets far more love than it did before Witcher 3 really showed that CDPR could cook ya know.
      PSS: As it is a Bioware game, doing companion quests are obviously incredibly important. Some of the best moments in the game come from them honestly, it's great. Hope this helps you decide one way or the other :)

    As for the video, I've only played Starfield, because it's on Game Pass, and it felt to me like a waste of time. Yes, I spent around 10 hours enjoying the game, while it felt new to me. But if anything, at the end, it made me download and play previous Bethesda titles. Starfield, in some of its elements is straight up a downgrade compared to those games. They made a great universe, there's style to it, but they failed at using their setting to create something exciting. This could have been their Mass Effect, but all I have seen is a lot of the same mechanics, some of which are even worse than before.

    Metal Gear Survive:
    No joke, the campaign in this game is amazing and although the delivery is sloppy the story is incredible.
    Mirror's Edge Catalyst:
    It's better than the first in every single aspect aside from the story. I don't understand people.
    Necromunda: Hired Gun
    It could be slower IMO. They pushed too much into being high octane but the atmosphere is second to none.
    Murdered Soul Suspect:
    I have no idea why people didn't liked it.
    Thief Reboot:
    Atmosphere is equal to none. The loading screens are unbearable (its not worse than starfield) but I guess being a thief game broke it. Because people had expectations. Me? Never played thief before. So I ended up with an incredible but flawed game.

    Inquisition was my first hook into dragon age when I was a teenager. I started Inquisition, realized it was the third game very shortly into it, and then I played all the games that came before it. I still love it. I love all the games. The entire franchise feels to be written with love, and I can look past some technical issues, especially because not all of it is the Devs fault. I appreciate them experimenting, and I appreciate that they really always do make me care about the world. They can never make me hate Inquisition.
    I recently got my husband to start playing it--he is a big fan of Fallout, at the same level I am of Dragon Age, and he is really enjoying it. Fills my heart. I get it is not for everyone, but lately, and this is partly a vent, people speaking on the next game coming out, saying it will fail, bug me because it is not out yet. It wouldn't bug me if the hate was not SO BAD about it. I acknowledge faults of development, as well as the fact that the game did not please everyone in the way Origins now seems too, but Inquisition did not win awards for no reason.
    At this point though, it feels as if the game is slowly teetering into a cult classic rather than a wide success. I partly feel like Anthem's failure made people view all the works of Bioware more critically--and even the buggy release of ME: Andromeda (although, I truly do not think that game is THAT bad, as it's set up similarly to ME:1 imo)--and that also means their older games that were, at one point widely accepted as successful.
    I will die on the hill that every single Dragon Age game is good, heightened by the narrative--even DA:2 with all its faults. When I play games, I remember the story. Stories are what stick with you. Bioware has always done them well.

    Starfield: DIDN'T ENJOY, DIDN'T HATE. Tried to be too big. Quantity over quality in terms of planets. I quite enjoyed the combat, yet didn't like the execution of an otherwise interesting approach to levelling. It was ok, but not better than other games I play.

    Dragon Age Inquisition: FAIRLY ENJOYED 1st PLAYTHROUGH. I like it, but I find the open-world tedious after a while, especially subsequent playthroughs. I like the characters and the mechanics of combat (but I would prefer a bit less spongy health. Not a dealbreaker though).
    Outer Worlds: HAD A GREAT TIME. I really enjoyed it. I'm stoked for the next one. I loved the environments, combat, humour, and levelling up. But I’m very ocd so other than FF 16 and certain games I tend to flip flop between all different various influences & styles.. Also I work a lot of hours so just doesn’t allow for me to finish games really quick

    Forspoken was one of my favorite games last year.

    I like Dragon Age: Inquisition as well but there was one thing that really made me mad. There was a goal to collect a bunch of things that were stuck in hard-to-reach places. The issue for me was that it felt like the only reason they were hard to reach was because the controls sucked.

    I played Inquisition about a year ago for the first time and mostly enjoyed it. I will admit though by the time I beat it, I was ready for it to be over. I planned to play through all of the DA games to prep for dread wolf, but after completing Origins I loaded up DA2, and played it for maybe two hours before uninstalling it to move on to DAI. DA2 felt horrible to play for me, I went in blind and was hoping it wouldn't be such a departure from the first game. I enjoyed Origins the most out of the 3, I kind of regret waiting until just last year to play it. The Outer Worlds is a game I thoroughly enjoyed, I was sad it had to end lol.

    Do you have "masterpieces" that you didn't enjoy? I have quite a list of them.
    Dark Souls 3, God of war, Batman Arkham series, Bioshock infinite, Borderlands 2, Fallout NV etc.

      I’ve heard him say he doesn’t like Dragon Age Origins actually haha…
      Yeah for me there’s a few on your list I don’t enjoy, namely God Of War and Borderlands 2 😂
