Not all creeks and rivers are equil his dinks and mine are vastly different.. his dinks are our medium to large i live in n/w Ohio fishing is not the best

As always impressive. What I like the most about this is you stress a person does not have to have 600 dollar combos to catch fish. It is a matter of finding fish. With that though I was always wanting to know exactly what you used as far as equipment and you did very well in this video. Kudos buddy keep em coming!!!

My catfish career began and ended the same day. Fished one lake in the morning, and another in the evening today. Not even a nibble in all those hours. All my catfish gear went back into storage. If I want to catfish, then I'll do it vicariously through you. lol

I watch you fish daily!! I love what you do and you truly inspire me! Cat fishing is my favorite fishing and I'm getting into kayak fishing myself and I have learned a lot from you! I have a $250 abu garcia, 5 of the $60 Kastking Rovers and a handful of $20 reels. My fav is the Kastking. I feel its better overall in feel and quality BUT my pb blue cat was caught on a $20 shakespeare rig from Wal-Mart.
Kast King is quickly becoming my go to reel company. I have their Sharkey Illl Baitfeeder and it's hands down better quality than my buddies penn
Discovery Outdoors / Matt-N-Abra are the kastkings holding up for you? They’re reels have good prices and if they really do work Im thinking about going to them cause I could have 5 set ups as opposed to 2. But I also don’t want 5 set ups I’m going to have to replace in a year or 2 as well.
Leland WittJr does the kastkings hold up as long as the abu and other similar catfish reels would you say?
U have the Shakespeare reel on the GX2 7’ rod?
I've had Shakespeare rods and reels for decades. My dad gave me one he had in the 80s and it finally fell apart on me last year.
The newer Shakespeare products can vary in quality greatly, but just go up one step from their on the shelf style gear and if you maintain it correctly, their products aren't bad whatsoever.
I've caught 40lb fish on no name mono line and a 7.5 ft Shakespeare $30 rod and reel combo off the shelf at Walmart.

Sometimes when I’m watching other talk about gear and how it could help your finishing, you can tell if it will really help your fishing or of if they are just pushing gear because of their sponsorships. I'm fairly new to your channel here. I'm a weekend bank bass fisherman but I really do enjoy your videos for the entertainment value. As for the ppl wanting to know what gear your using, yeah maybe oh let's just say 70% of them do want to use the gear you are using. There is some of us though that just want to know because it helps us learn more about the fisherman we are watching. It helps us too learn more about your thought process on what and how you are doing things. With that being said, I just wanna thank you for taking a moment to help us learn more about you.

Wow, when I first took a big interest in fishing in about 1971 (when I was 13), Buck Perry was a living legend and was talked about quite a lot in the ONLY magazine of those times which took a science-based approach to fishing - "Fishing Facts" (many of today's most famous fishing names wrote for "Fishing Facts" in the early 1970s). I haven't heard Buck Perry mentioned since then, so it's neat to find out that some people still value what he accomplished and taught.
I owe a lot of my success to what I learned from Buck’s books. They are still the best resource I know of for learning how and where to fish.

I bought one of the okuma classic reels like that once a few years ago and fell in love with it. Much like you it exceeded my expectation and since then I’ve bought two more. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.
They truly are the best reel for the money.

👍 Great presentation on gear & terminal tackle. My target fish slot size is 10-70lbs... I've ordered a couple Rippin Lips Super Cat MH rods, with KastKing 6000 reels, Ande Monster 30# mono mainline, and Reaction Tackle 80# mono leaderline. Sharp circle hooks, pencil lead, and peg floats with fresh bait for me all-day long. But you can catfish with nearly any medium action or heavier rod. I can't wait to finish restoring the "Abandoned Boston Whaler" so I can get back on the lake fishing this Spring. 🦈🐟🐟 Happy Fishing. 🤪
I'd still be fishing my UglyStik MH/H rods with Abu Garcia. 5501 & 6501 reels, but I gave it all away before moving to the desert. LOL

I started out with an old classic South Bend reel? for catfish. They don't make em anymore, burst spin and button release reels now. I still have my 55's/65's and a couple 75 Abu's. I have my 7' Uglies for certain conditions. For casting I use an 8/9/10' foot rods for different conditions like bank fishing, Jon boat, other boat, etc... Unless I anchor up then I suspend like you do and always have. It's served me well and a whole lot of fun for over 30yrs I guess. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great videos!

Great video man I'm a Abu Garcia for life man I have over 40 of them from 1970s to present day and that's pretty much all I use and I also have 2 of those older cat maxxs and they are awesome.

Liked the presentation on equipment. Yea good on stuff that is not expensive but just plain "gits it done". Oh buy the way one of your previous vids on using light line and the 1" gulp minnie on pan fish. When to that method and am killing the gills,crappie, trout and bass. Yes right here in PA. What I got out of the video was the type of equipment you use, not the brand. You know I am an ultralight fisherman. However, if I should ever try catfishing from my kayak, this video helped with rod and reel size, line size, etc. I was impressed you are not using $500+ combos.

I appreciate you and your honesty that's I watch you I can't afford expensive gear but I still catch fish... I know I get a lot of flack for using push button reels but they haul in the fish lol my zebco 404 hauled in a 30lb flat head..
Thanks! I haven’t personally used the push button reels but if they work for you, there is no reason to switch from them.
@@randywilson6869 If'in it works for you have at it. Personally have 11 of those "push button" reels with rods. Use them to night fish cats and big trout here in PA.

Nice video, great info and personal experience I like it. On the subject of reels the Abu Garcia 6500 are the best in my opinion. I always buy the models that are made in Sweden they have the metal parts and don't wear out as quickly. That of course is my personal experience and opinion. I use them anywear from bottom fishing to surf fishing to steelhead fishing in the rivers.

May I add a tip!? I fish big catfish as well and I’ve learned to use a plastic bead between my knot and my slip sinker because over time that sinker slamming your knot will fray it and make it a weak link. Take it or leave it just keep doing what u do I like watching u catch them big flatheads brother. Good luck!
I like those conventional level winds, their easier to cast. The low profile baitcasters give me a fit trying to cast them.
Just got me a chopstick for $20, been using bcf rods on my yak for a year now no problem. Excited to see how the lighter chopstick rod does

I run abu garcia 7000s and i just recently bought a few okuma classic reels you showed there i really like the okumas for the money team catfish double actions are best circle hook too rarely lose hookups they are pricey but worth it
It kills me to pay $1 per hook but I do like the team catfish hooks.

I liked the video and am the same about gear, and also use my old ugly stick cat rods from way back. I would be more interested in tips to make life easier for catfishing from kayaks. I think i see some foam zip tied to uour rods for example, things like that you have learned the hard way. Appreciate the videos keep it up!

I just bought a ugly stik tiger elite jigging rod, they're a little (relatively) shorty meat stik that might be fairly well suited for kayak fishing or just where you don't want or need a long rod. But.. they might not have the tip or action for circle hooks. I have a different use in mind for mine but thought I'd mention them.
I used the Abu Garcia 6500 for saltwater fishing reds , snook, and Cobia since the 1980' s I like them
They are great quality reels.

Man I'm alot like u about fishing I'm not a flashy gear guy I use a five gallon bucket for a catfishing box I'm still using the old flat jaw Garcia rells and as long as I'm cacthing fish with them I am going to keep using them lol thanks great video

Hey man. I’ve been binge watching your videos. Been getting into catfishing since I got stationed in NC. I’m from TN and used to do some catfishing back in school. But stopped fishing when I was in San Diego. Got a question for you(or anyone who sees this), Do you follow the recommended test line on your reels, or do u think it’s fine to run a heavier line on a rod that only suggests say 20lbs? I have 40lb with 50lb leader on my old SouthBend Mudville and thinking about changing out the 20lbs on my Uglystik GX2 with Shakespeare reel.

I have the same catfish ugly rod. I use a smaller Abu garcia 5500. Haven't hooked a monster yet. Line is Berkley big game 25lb mono
I used the 5500 model for a long time. Those are great reels too.

My favorite set up is some cheap garage sale 50 cent Mudville rod and a 1970s Penn Peer 209. Its my favorite because I've caught more fish in it that any other set up I own... And it only cost me $2.50 minus line and rigging.

I like them Garcia reels all I got in my striper boat when they get striped out there easy to fix I don’t go below a 5500c and don’t go over a 6500c

i have been using a triple loop knot , it is highly recommended for heavy mono on u tube. so far so good, clinch knot would slip on me . looked up Don dickson answered a lot of questions, thanks for that. could you recommend a good catfish guide ?? your channel is the best, and your system and philosophy on fishing is spot on. thanks
Thanks Charles! For what it costs to book a guide service around here, I would recommend saving your money and just renting a kayak for a few days. The money saved will cover the cost of the kayak, hotel, food, etc. Once you get a good grasp on the Buck Perry material, you won’t have any problems finding fish without a guide service.
@@KayakCatfish thanks i have a boat how accurate is navioncs 80% what do you think? i have a 24 foot center console plenty of room if you wanted to go out one day we will exsplore some new water. i dont want to know your spots . catching is fun , but knowing where to put the bait and finding them is my fun . i let my wife real them in.
Navionics is very accurate where I fish but I don’t know how accurate it is on other bodies of water. I appreciate the invite onto your boat but I pretty much have to film every day I am able to fish to maintain my current UA-cam schedule and doing that in my kayak is just easier since I have everything already setup for filming.
We use Okuma clx300la reels on Berkley big game rods. I wish I'd went with the smaller 200s. That's all you need.
We put Big game 30# mono on them.
I agree. The 300 size is a little bigger than I need for my fishing.

For me its abu garcia reels, ugly stiks, and lightning rods, grew up using them so they're the only brands I use
