The first rod my Dad ever put in my hands was an Ugly Stik. I was four, it was an ice fishing rod. I was a bluegill slayer by the end of the weekend. My friends always give me lip about my "ancient white stick" but that catfish rod has been a constant companion for decades and still hauls in the big ones. Great video, I just found your channel and subbed.
I personally use Berkley big game rods 21.88 from Walmart and I've pulled in some massive cats with them. We routinely catch blues over 30# on these and only broke 1 but that was due to someone setting a cooler on it.
Been fishing for years and always used ugly Stik catfish rods, have 18 of them and 6 of them I got at walmart on clearance for 15 dollars each. Love them and have pulled in some 40 + lbs'ers so it's really hard for me to switch. A lot of nite fishing so works great with black lights. Never had a problem.
I have Whisker Seeker, Catch the Fever and Tangligling with Catish rods in both casting and spinning. I Like them all. I use the TWC Whisker Whips in the Virgin Islands for Tarpon as well as catfish
All of mine are 2 piece spinning. Rippin lips are nice, Ugly Stiks are stronger, but I love my old Cabela King Kat spinning rods. Not bass pro shop king kat rods. My Ugly Stik 9' 2piece catfish special will be used this week on Kankakee River here in IL. I love my 7', 8' and 9' two piece spinning rods.
Hard to beat the Ugly Sticks. My other favorite is Whisker seekers. But one forgot rod that I like is my one piece medium heavy yellow Eagle Claws purchased and Piedmont bait and tackle on 150. Been using four of them for years. They are light and bend nice and never have I broken one.
Think you are talking about the ocean granger 2 rods? If so at one time. These rods were very popular around NC with carp fisherman. I got a bunch from my uncle in the early 2000s that he had bought in the mid 90s and used for years. I still have about 5 that i catfish with and i have never been able to break one either.
Thanks for the video Dieter!! Here in Indiana I have always used the ugly stick for cat but we don't have big blues here just flat head and channel unless your in Southern Indiana!! I'm going to get 3 BIG Catfish rods though so I can make a trip down to the Ohio river!!!
All mine are ugly sticks with 5500 and 6500 Abu Garcia reels …they work just fine for me and as far as I’m concerned Abu Garcia reels can’t be beat!!!!!
2 of those rods are the exact same blank. The reason for the weight difference is one no longer has a split grip. All great rods none the less. I will have to give the win to the new style Ugly Stik for the guides, I think they are better suited for braided lines.
I don’t think it matters at all. I choose Ugly Stik simply bc the warranty, price, and availability. Mine sit in rod holders. They also have 2 piece options which is nice when I’m traveling with my family and they double for a pretty nice surf fishing option when we hit the beach. Oh lastly, I MUCH prefer white rods for nighttime fishing. My buddy has Whisker Seekers and you can’t see them at night.
I love the Rippin' Lips rods. I have many different rods, but have three Rippin' Lips now. I have one Catfish Pro, but had a eyelet come out of it, right in the middle. The Walmart near me, now carries the Catfish Pro in stock, but I replaced it with a Rippin Lips. Never tried an Ugly Stick. B/M silver cat Elite is also in the ballpark on price, and I really like it as well.
I personally lean towards the BnM Silver Cat Elite "Heavy" it's $94 but you can buy the med/hev at bass pro for $70ish and they're honestly one of the best rods made
I have a rippin lips 7.5’ spinning rod I medium that was $45 and is 1-4 oz rated. It’s been fantastic and much better than the old white ugly stick in my opinion.
My rods I like the best are my ugly stick tiger, and ugly stick big water both brands in 7ft rods. I also like Denali and I only bought that brand because of my truck lol.
I have three of the Ugly Stik Catfish rods, two casting and one spinning, and none of the guides on them look as thick as the one in the video. They are solid metal without inserts, though. Maybe yours is older or it's the angle of the shot? I know that Justin of Kayak Catfish used them exclusively before getting sponsored, and he pulled up some 30+ pounders with no problems. I use them for striper fishing with bait in lakes with no current, so the lighter lure weight is no problem. I have them for striper fishing in a lake, but since people keep everything that's barely legal there won't be any more 50-60 pounders caught. Imagine if the bass fisherman kept everything that was legal.
I’ve grown up with the first rod in my hands being my mommas 11 foot blue and white meat hunter. Are they just only around Oklahoma? I really don’t see many UA-camrs use them and in my opinion one of the best rods out there for the actual use age of the rod. There are a few things they could use like the casting variant not having a trigger is a bit irking but other than that honestly my favorite rod. Can’t go wrong with a meat hunter
Have you ever caught 2,3 or up to 4 cat fish on the same peace of bait. Then had to cut it off the hook?. Then you have not used chicken gizzards. New to being a fishing guide, as I got my license and not started to advertise yet. I'm in OKLAHOMA and fish keystone, ten killer and a few more lakes. Rod an reel or jug line is my thing. Have always been told I should be a guide, so I will give it a try. Would love any advice you could give, if you have time. You can look me up through ODWC under river cat guide servis.
The best rod and reel is the one you can afford no matter how cheap the price tag says. You just might catch the new lake record bass, catfish etc while bank fishing with a $29.99 Walmart combo and beat the pros records that fished the lake for 30+ years with expensive gear, boats, front facing sonar, down and side imaging fish finders, spot lock trolling motors, power-pole anchors etc etc etc. Just saying 8)
I like the look of the catfish pro rod/reel combo & watched your video on them & am going to buy a couple of them when they get restocked back up in October
Specifically for Cats I have used Med/lite (spinner)and MH (casting) Rippin Lips 7'6" for a while (4-5ys almost every day),had one snap the tip off while getting it out of the truck. To find it's a composite fiberglass/carbon blend.... I hate Graphite or carbon (full/blend) rods, they break easier than all fiberglass hence why the Rippin Lips broke so easily. I found a couple Shakespeare Sturdy Stiks Med (casting). They're all fiberglass,7' and cast my baits/weight much better than the the Rippin Lips. I pretty much quit using the Rippin Lips rods as I like the cheap Sturdy Stiks much better although they're harder to find than the Ugly Cat rods.Since this Covid BS I'm still trying to find 2 more spinners and 1 more caster (all 7' Med). The guides, yeah they could be better (even at their low price) but they work....if they ever fail I'll replace them with better.
I also prefer the shorter rods over longer ones.... The longer rods do nothing but give the fish more leverage on you than it does you on it....they'll find this out real quick if they have back problems... My 50-80 Shark rod is only 5'6" or 6'. Many say they need a long rod to get out there 100yds or more....lol...No,they just need to learn a proper casting technique.
Your Ugly stick is pretty old compared to the other two. Well used I would say shouldn't be in this comparing test. You should have a new one, just saying. You can purchase a New Ugly Stik Catfish Combo for $49.99. Tight Line

Whisker seeker rods are really popular around here I was a bit surprised they werent on this list. Thanks for the video take care.
Because honestly whisker seeker rods are prob the closest thing to a custom rod you can get off the shelf
WS is a lot more expensive than these so it probably wouldn't be a good comparison
Whisker seeker is popular here in Eastern Nebraska, but they're made just a few hours away in Iowa. My wife has 4.
I personally use Berkley big game rods 21.88 from Walmart and I've pulled in some massive cats with them. We routinely catch blues over 30# on these and only broke 1 but that was due to someone setting a cooler on it.
Always enjoy your videos dude.
That white ugly stik is my daily catfish pole 😂 I’ve had it since I was 8yo, got it from my grandfather.
Always happy to see gear videos. It does make shopping for the next setup a little easier.
I have a dozen or so only broke 1 closed the car door on it about 20 years ago took it back to kmart and got a new one.
Dude really , friends don't let friends use those things! The clothes at Walmart suck too !! Stay out of that store !
Ok , I understand the clearance deal . Check out the Penn Battle rods , and reels . They'd kick any ugly stick right in the nuts !
I have Whisker Seeker, Catch the Fever and Tangligling with Catish rods in both casting and spinning. I Like them all. I use the TWC Whisker Whips in the Virgin Islands for Tarpon as well as catfish

Dude, such a thorough video. Great job.
Loved the video!! The only pole I use normally is a ugly stik big water cause it works great and cheap!
Good info Dieter. Can't wait for more!

I have 2 tuna sticks eagle claw 1-5 oz 15-30 great yellow tail rod
Hey can you do a rod comparison on the berkley big game rods? I think they are a super bargin for the money.
Thanks for the video Dieter!! Here in
Indiana I have always used the ugly
stick for cat but we don't have big
blues here just flat head and channel
unless your in Southern Indiana!!
I'm going to get 3 BIG Catfish rods
though so I can make a trip down
to the Ohio river!!!
Hit the falls man, you’ll love it.
I look forward to seeing more content like this.
I know that the Whisker Seeker rods are a bit more pricey, but I wish you could do a video on the Whisker Seeker and a couple more in that price range.
Got 2 catfish pro and 2 silvercat elite I like the elite rods better but the catfish pro are not to bad they get the job done great video
Ugly stick rods are definitely some of the best!
I use and try other rods but always have a Ugly Stiks in the group
I don’t think it matters at all. I choose Ugly Stik simply bc the warranty, price, and availability. Mine sit in rod holders. They also have 2 piece options which is nice when I’m traveling with my family and they double for a pretty nice surf fishing option when we hit the beach. Hey Dieter can u also do a rod comparison on Berkley glow stick. rod 7ft med heavy with a abu 7000 reel??? Thank you once again
I love the Rippin' Lips rods. I have many different rods, but have three Rippin' Lips now. I have one Catfish Pro, but had a eyelet come out of it, right in the middle. There it is again . . . Walmart?
@@mikethetreeguy Yep, the one closest to me has the Catfish pro, in stock, on the shelf.
Should check out catfish sumo chopstick 150
You should try out madkatz
Right on Dieter!
Deiter, have you ever tried the madkats rod. If anyone has used them, I'd like some feedback on them, please.
Hi how is the b&m rods thanks great video
Can you review the HT OL' Whiskers Pro Power Plus 6'6" Medium Heavy Catfish Spinning Rod?
I use the B&M silvet cat elite and the catch the fever rods
I personally lean towards the BnM Silver Cat Elite "Heavy" it's $94 but you can buy the med/hev at bass pro for $70ish and they're honestly one of the best rods made
I have a rippin lips 7.5’ spinning rod I medium that was $45 and is 1-4 oz rated. It’s been fantastic and much better than the old white ugly stick in my opinion.
Good video Dieter . Do you plan on doing another comparison on the Big 2 cat rods around here
I know ugly sticks are old but I just bought 2 7'6" catfish poles with spinning reels for 8 bucks a piece. Score
Thanks for the info. Love this channel
My rods I like the best are my ugly stick tiger, and ugly stick big water both brands in 7ft rods. I also like Denali and I only bought that brand because of my truck lol.
i have 3 catfish pro rods and 3 rippinlips like the action on them
Can you do two pcs rods?
I use the zebco catfish fighter and I have caught a 17 pound catfish
I have three of the Ugly Stik Catfish rods, two casting and one spinning, and none of the guides on them look as thick as the one in the video. They are solid metal without inserts, though. Maybe yours is older or it's the angle of the shot? I know that Justin of Kayak Catfish used them exclusively before getting sponsored, and he pulled up some 30+ pounders with no problems. what do you think about mad katz
You did a good job
Where did you find your ugly stick price. I’ve been looking for them forever.
in europe we use 80lb lines and 3-5 once weight, can the ugly stick handle this
I’ve grown up with the first rod in my hands being my mommas 11 foot blue and white meat hunter.
Love my meat hunters. We ordered some custom ones with tax returns this year.
Have you ever caught 2,3 or up to 4 cat fish on the same peace of bait. Then had to cut it off the hook?. Then you have not used chicken gizzards. I love this video except for one thing you should try buying a pig wip rod. Very hard to get ahold of one. But I promise you best rod ever
Nice rods
with the super cat are there reels included or are they separate?
Not sure….they may offer combos in some locations, especially at the Catfish Conference.
To me being a pro staff guy I chose my rods based on durability. The weight to me has nothing to do with it since I keep my rods in rod holders.
Rod weight matters to the bumping guys....
The catfish pro rods are cheaper than the rippen lipps rods. The shipping is free on the catfish pro rods.
Thanks
The best rod and reel is the one you can afford no matter how cheap the price tag says. Just saying 8)
Ugly Stick or Berkeley... They all will bring them in at a good price (we're broke over here).
Got the catfish pro today, but the only downside is it's a one piece
I prefer the Tiger Uglystik over the catfish Uglystik. I don't care for one piece rods when the rod is longer than 6'.
The white ugly stik rods are getting hard to come by, I think they are phasing into the Ugly Stik Catfish Special.
I think much of it is simply supply chain issues. Many rods are just simply "out of stock".

Penn rules all .
Ugly stick is the best 💯💯
YOO tell me exept walmart any ather store thats in Europe, like france or germany or any EU country that i can get these rods
Why don't u do your test with newer rods
Everything works great when it’s brand new!!
Meaning rods that are colossal to how they are made now
I like my ugly sticks
I've been running rippin lips for probably 5 or 6 yrs. I own 20 of em. Ive never had a problem for the price vs quality they cant be beat Imo
👍
Based on comments the ugly stick slams .
Mad Katz
The ugly stik is $49 now
Berkley big game rods for me too. I'll let all the rich kids have those other rods.
Your Ugly stick is pretty old compared to the other two. Well used I would say shouldn't be in this comparing test. You should have a new one, just saying.
You can purchase a New Ugly Stik Catfish Combo for $49.99. Tight Line
👍
