Enjoying the videos. I’ve been catching more flatheads over the last two years and I am losing a lot of fish on circle hooks. I think the reason you explained is why. I’m about to change my hooks! Thanks for the vid.
Another thing I've found really helpful is the improved paternoster rig when fishing gills in deep cover. It's like a big dropshot and if you use 4 oz no snags with a 20 lb leader in conjunction with three way swivel if you break off your sinker, you can just clip another one on. The float on the rig keeps your bait up off the bottom keeping the gills from knitting a sweater around a stump.
Big jig head for thick cover. (Slaps forehead) so simple yet so effective. I lost alot of tackle fishing log jams last year. And the rattle thingy...awesom!
I agree with your use of jhooks. The majority of the time the hook glides along the palate and sets in the corner of the mouth anyway. A really simple way to keep your live bait on the hook is to slice a small cross section of rubber worm and after hooking your bait, hook the piece of rubber worm down past the barb. What happens is in current, the barb hogs the hook hole out allowing the bait to wiggle off. The small piece of rubber prevents this ensuring that your bait stays on all night.
Love the channel and got some great info. Iv found that when using a slip weight rigg, pull up on pole to take up slack as soon as bait hits the water, maybe reel a couple times. This will keep your leader line length more consistent. Tips 👍
I've been subbed for awhile and I haven't seen this video yet. Glad it popped up. With it being so cold out I've been trying for Burbot and I think I might try one of these rigs rather than standard sliding sinker I usually do. Thanks for the info!
You can use old braid or the inner strands of para cord to make your own bobber stops. I use them to help me retain my terminal tackle in case of a break off. Just tie them right above your swivel or hook using a uni knot. I prefer the strands of para cord, I keep some on a spool of sewing thread.
Great vid. To not lose the weight on your last rig, add a bead right below the weight, then a dacron bobber stop below that. Not sure how well this would work, but as long as the weight doesn't over-power the dacron bobber stop (or put more than one dacron bobber stop!) then if the line broke right at the hook's knot itself (that's often then case) then you might salvage the weight.
Glad you like that idea. Keep producing vids. I added this to one of my catfish playlists. To get technical, some bead/DACRON-stop combinations (usually when I just wing-it, and don't use a commercial tandem bead/bobber-stop combination), don't work perfectly as when your bead gets pushed up real HARD to the dacron bobber-stop the dacron bobber stop actually goes **THROUGH** the bead - not good - your weight will then come off! So putting a RUBBER bobber-stop BETWEEN the bead and the dacron-bobber-stop always works for me. Dacron bobber stops seem to "hold" on the line much more than those rubber-bobber-stops, so you can't JUST use the rubber-stops, you need one or probably two DACRON stops to assure that the heavy weight won't just pull off. But experiment.
Very useful information. I live in Nebraska and fish the salt valley lakes I know there's giants in these lakes I will definitely use this information to my advantage. And if I catch one I will be sure to let you know.
@@RiverCertified also been trying for a while to get over to Iowa and see what size fish y'all have over there. I see that the lakes and most of the parks are pretty clean wish I could say the same for my state.
Those folks Who say Your line is to heavy ,Your leader is to short .If they feel any pull they will spit it out .Have no problem using nylon cord with a big circle hook tied to a limb with a big sinker and a bream or crawdad as bait
Very good. I like the first rig and also have used the Linder rig for years. You got a one minute jurassic park jeep commercial at the beginning by the way. Way to go👍
You brought up the fact that with a fixed sinker rig, live bait can pop off. During warmer weather fishing (spring through fall really) how long, in your opinion, should you leave a bait out before checking it and recasting? I always worry especially at night that my bait flew off the hook when casting and I'm sitting there with an empty hook lol. If I'm not getting bites, I always check every ten minutes or so, but sometimes that feels to impatient.
Thank you Jim! I love reading Stange's articles about Toad and Zacker. The video's with Stange and Toad are great too. I need to keep bringing them up. It would be a shame for their legacy to slide by the wayside.
Nice video, we're coming into the fall and winter months so getting ready for some river fishing. Thanks for the different rigs Especially the 3rd one. On the MS River and always looking for new ways to NOT get snagged. Have an awesome day. Thanks _Scott
The last one, in a shallow spot, 2 or 3 foot deep. Try with a split shot or very small sinker. Hold tip of rod under water and let bait drift under log jams. Keep line tween thumb and forefinger and you will feel them pick it up as you are letting line out. This presents a more natural way of bait coming to them.
That sounds deadly... I'll definitely be giving that a try! The first rig I bump into cover, which is a similar strategy to what you're talking about. Feeling them hit is a cool feeling! Thanks man!
I used the zero rig in a creek with chicken liver on it and caught a blue catfish. Line snapped right as I was pulling him in though. I got a good enough look at him to know it was a blue
Nice, I’ve been curious about those versa rattles. Chavez uses them too, fishing for blues. Must admit I was surprised to see the J hook, but your logic does seem sound. Good stuff here.
What about the Kentucky rig or Carolina rig don't you think those are much more simpler than these rigs you mentioned? And if you cut corners with the Kentucky rig on the loop for the hookset it's way much more simpler.
What do you consider a carolina rig? My definition is a sliding sinker above a swivel, then a leader and a hook, which is the second rig. I don't have much experience using a Kentucky rig, but plan on using it more next year.
I'm just not sold on versa rattles. I have a good friend that fishes exclusively with versa but see just as many fish if not more and bigger fish caught without them. I know they are cheap but it just seems like a gimmick to me. Thoughts?
Andy Merget I totally get what you are saying. I never put a rattle on every single line I have out, unless that's the only bait getting hit. Then I put a rattle on all of them. Sometimes they want the rattle, sometimes they don't care. It just never hurts to try something a little different. Really appreciate you watching! I really enjoy discussion like this!
Smart staying away from the circle hooks. The circle hooks do facilitate catch and release though -especially if a person tends to let the fish swallow the bait for a long time.
River Certified 4/0 is my go to big or small catfish it’s hard to beat but get a good brand of circle hooks or it’ll break but a cheap eagle claw circle sea hook brought in a 34 pound flat so no need for a big hook
On the slip sinker rig i will pinch two BBS about 6" from the swivel. The first rig you showed i like to tie a piece of 6-8lb test with a simple over hand loop or even use a rubber band. That way if it snags it breaks off easily. Also whats up with everyone using float with rattles. I havent been fishing for flatheads in years and started up again a few weeks ago and noticed everyone is using floats with rattles in it now.
Buddy. This video is great. I’ve wondered as out those rattling Whisker seekers you use. I’ve got the chrome and red ones. Ill half to try the first one. You put way more beads then I use lol

Both the Fox River and the Chain-of-Lakes have big flatheads - not because I believe people's mouth's , but because every year we have a local newspaper article with a 40-50 pounder. +River Certified hey when you fish a sand bar at night with your friends and they are using circle hook's do they catch more fish than you. mine do but when I fish brush piles I insult there there fishing ability.
Hey spencer like to have a shirt like that but I’m a poor ol country boy right at this moment but hopefully not for long if you send me one I will proudly wear it and all the olboys and gals I know I will tell them where they can get them god bless
Ok.... wise guy....do exactly the same but brackish too saltwater..... bottom fish rigs .....and jughead action .....ur best rigs ...I'm dieing here fishing everywhere around me in 100mi radius....help river certified....and get me and you #salt certified... challenge.....I'm still trying..lol
Haha thanks man. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Chicago will have much representation this year in the playoffs. Not sure who I'm gonna be rooting for now.
Omg😂😂 this is more a sales post than anything😂😂. Never use a swivel or beads or leader..thats just a gimmick😒. Hope you sell your "gimmick" so you don't get fired😂😂

10/0 is the best hook to use. I have lost Big fish with smaller but caught small fish with a 10/0. A 3 pound Flat can swallow a 10/0 easy.
Bill Briscoe that's true, but I just try to match the hook to the bait size and unfortunately I can't always get a bait big enough for a 10/0 hook.

Another question! How do these bullheads get in my local ponds owners Tell me they never stocked them when built. At every pond they are in!
There eggs sometimes get attached to duck feathers, and they get moved around when the ducks move around. Same with green sunfish.
Fish Eggs cling on birds feet as they fly and land pond to pond. The birds she'd them in different waterways.

Haha thanks man. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Chicago will have much representation this year in the playoffs. Not sure who I'm gonna be rooting for now.
There is no reason to use a Rattle
His shirts pretty cool but don't listen to his advice
😆😆😆agreed
Too fancy for a place where the hook gets stuck all the time….
Fair point. I guess it just depends on how much you believe the extras make.a difference.
Omg😂😂 this is more a sales post than anything😂😂. Never use a swivel or beads or leader..thats just a gimmick😒. Hope you sell your "gimmick" so you don't get fired😂😂
I suppose technically all you need is a hook. Use what you think think is the best. Perception is a powerful thing.
How do you find your bullheads for bait?
