    Bro I caught a 55lb blue on a 4 inch bullhead! Small bait works wonders on big fish. Granted larger baits weed out the smaller ones. Great vids keep them coming. Tight lines!

    Also cutting the barbs off your hooks or using barbless hooks helps when catching gills and greenies, to keep them alive when they swallow those little hooks.

    I was going to mention the other day, you should do a video on how a pro fisherman gets his baits lol. I live in a city, so there are all sorts of ponds and highway drainage holds all over town. I know of hundreds, but use only 2, because of convenience and just knowing there is always going to be a bed of juicy gills for me to toss my net over. When it comes to minnows though, I go support a bait shop. After seeing your bait tank though, I'm definitely going to be building one.

    • @RiverCertified

    Thanks for another solid video!
    PRO TIP (from an amateur) for those who read comments: The more bait you have in your bucket, the more often you should change out the water. When captured, fish empty their bowel and bladder like crazy. I don't blame them a bit, but it pollutes the water and keeps them from getting the oxygen they need from it. This can be true even if you're using an aerator, which I also recommend.

    • @RiverCertified
      @RiverCertified  4 роки тому +1

      Thats exactly why I like to let em chill in the bucket before they go in the bait tank

    I caught about a 5-6 lb Brown Bullhead on a little black bullhead ( yellow belly) a long time ago, at a pond behind a vocational school, thought it was a small Flathead at first until I got to looking at it and checking it out. But I had caught another good size brown bullhead before that at a gravel pit and it was probably about 5 lbs or so. Good deal man, a lot of good bait!

    • @hensleyshobbies-doug7761
      @hensleyshobbies-doug7761 4 роки тому

      River Certified - yeah the brown bullheads are not as common as the other species of bullheads, but when you do catch one it’s usually a pretty good one! You catch one 4, 5, 6 lbs that’s generally a trophy! I didn’t know it at the time I caught those ones but the Ky record for Brown bullhead is or was like 5 lbs and something, I probably had one that beat that record just didn’t know it..! Oh yeah, another thing about the brown bullhead, most are mottled colored, like some flatheads are. That’s why I thought that one was a Flathead, until I got to checking it out good!

    Arizona is one of the states where we can't transport any live fish (besides minnows and waterdogs). We have to catch all of our bait in the water we use them in. I wish we could transport, it would make some trips so much easier. We've had many trips where we don't even start flathead fishing until midnight. That's usually only in the middle of winter when the gills are gone and you can only catch a few carp. You definitely learn to catch bait in all situations/weather/temps,etc. lol

    When I was a kid every farm pond had bullheads , about 15 years ago all the ranches started fertilizing pastures to produce better hay & the bullheads have about disappeared. My uneducated theory is that because of their diet and how they stay down in the mud on hot summer days here in Oklahoma the fertilizer run off effects them much more than fish that stay suspended in the water but 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I usually enjoy catching bait myself unless I'm in a time crunch or it hotter than the gates of hell. It's hard to find bullhead around my area I live that's so concentrated like that pond was. I can get as many bluegill big chubs and green sunfish as I cld ever use but not so many bullhead anymore. When I was a kid I use to catch them all day long in a few ponds I know of but idk what happend to them all.

    • @RiverCertified
      @RiverCertified  4 роки тому

      I hear ya. Seems like I'm always in a time crunch unfortunately. Bullheads tend to cycle. 2-5 year old ponds that haven't been stocked with fish tend to get them.

    So in IA are you allowed to take bait fish from one body of water to another? Here in NE it’s illegal... makes it difficult to use live bait for flatheads unless you get em from a bait shop or catch them in the same river/creek/lake...Great vid again sir!

    • @huskergator9479
      @huskergator9479 4 роки тому +3

      Clearly Epic i just read our NE regs to clarify that point, and you are dead on. Keep your bait shop receipt! Also, can you explain why every other state gets multiple poles with lotsa hooks while we get stuck with 2/2? What did we do to piss our G&P Commission??

    • @clearlyepic9958

      @@huskergator9479 I have had bullheads in a large tote filled with tap water with a cheap bubble box from Wal Mart for up to 2 weeks and nothing else. Those bubble boxes will run on one D cell for a long time, no need to put 2 batteries in them. Bullheads can live anywhere and seem to be even more lively after they are in the tote. Cut the side fins off them so you don't get stuck by them it doesn't hurt them. Also bluegills will live in there for at least a week if they don't jump out. ;-) Keep the lid on so it's dark, they stay calmer. Like Spenser said bullheads like the really crappy water even a little mud hole 50 ft around and a couple feet deep can hold a pile of them. Good luck!
