Another great thought provoking video. Although I have the luxury of being retired I still struggle to find time for photography. I get round this by always taking my camera with me so photography is often more an extension of my life than a stand alone activity. this definitely works for me. Have a great Christmas in your new home.

TIME....A frightening concept....Back in the late 80's I was paid to press a shutter button, but ten years later, I gave all that up and only used a mobile phone camera for many years. Suddenly, I have rekindled my love of the camera, and in retirement I can go out whenever I want........The problem now is that I don't have enough years left to enjoy it. Don't let this happen to you. Keep on shooting...

Pensive theme, Chris. Not often covered on YT, so kudos for that. (Effective typewriter text bits.) IMO, photographic time management is organic and very much an individual thing. Imagery for ourselves vs commercial demands and competing life demands. The days of full analog photography required far more time per image - concept to finished print, with chemical processes, etc. Digital enables greater volume, and efficiencies (e.g., ease/speed of portrait retouching) but perhaps w/less time allocated to the entire creative process.
By end of Dec, 4K subs, for sure (it’s about time😊). Cheers!

I think that's why I've enjoyed shooting more film this year, the process and the nuance of it is very rewarding! I'm hoping to do a lot more in 2025! (if film prices allow 😅).

    Hi Chris.
Good talking points, again. I haven't owned a television for thirty years, and as a result, I have time to take my time over things. I have a folder on my desktop for each month of the year for my pictures, a helpful visual presence, and a life archive I can refer to. I look forward to taking pictures, simple as that.
I think your channel will be viewed by a small group of regular subscribers instead of a large group of capricious G.A.S heads which isn't bad. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Thanks so much for watching Colin! I love that approach, it's how I organise my personal work too! I've dabbled a lot with different storage/file management methods over the years but I find organising images by month is a nice way to reflect on the year.
That's exactly what I'd love to establish here on the channel. I don't want to appeal to gear-centric side of photography, I just want to share my photography and my thoughts and feelings towards the photographic process in terms of what works, and also what doesn't work for me, in the hope that it resonates with others. I love making videos, I love photography, and I love thinking creatively so that's what I hope to pursue with this channel.
Thanks as always for support! Wishing you the best my friend!

Very well edited video Chris and another great subject of discussion. I have found just having my camera with me most of the time allows me to capture photos when I see an image I really like. I am lucky enough to work outside every day. Good luck with the 4000, you certainly deserve to reach it.

Great topic Chris. In my view, time is one of many factors one needs to consider, but probably the most important one. For example, with an interest in outdoor/landscape photography, weather plays such an important role, BUT as my time to go and photograph is limited (I need to work to pay the bills as most of us do), to wait for optimal weather conditions, at my chosen location, is usually a "hit or miss" affair. I'm therefore content to capture "good enough" images, not great ones, as reliance on external factors is too great, and spoils the outing if that is one's key focus (to capture an awesome image). I think Ansel Adams once said something like "If you can create 10 great images in a year, then it was a very good year". Getting out and having a bit of an adventure is key, a great photo is a bonus (IMHO). Take care.

Thanks for watching and sharing your feelings on some of this stuff, it's really appreciated and I think your approach is super healthy! Expectation setting is key when it comes to photography - certainly something i've learned over the years as there's so much that's outside of our control. I think for me, these feelings have stemmed from the relationship between my commercial work and personal work. For client shoots, everything is so frantic and photographing quickly and delivering final photos quickly is so part of the norm that it's inadvertently influenced how I photograph for myself outside of work where there are no real time restrictions or consequences aside from those I put on myself. Yet I still find myself photographing with the same degree of urgency and that's where I'm making concerted efforts to slow down and just enjoy the process.

Good topic, but my time problem is different. Working full time and getting older means that I often have very little time and even less energy left for my photography. I am happy if I get out for an hour to two on Sunday mornings in the winter. But yes, even on those days I sometimes struggle to find the "time" to do that. Which is to say, it's more the energy that I don't have any more.

Thanks for watching! I think your feelings are definitely relatable! Energy is a very important factor! Especially when it comes to actually going out with the camera. That’s why I like to revisit old photos in Lightroom and take the time to plan ideas and research locations etc. I feel those activities still help me feel engaged with my photography but are often a lot less taxing compared to heading out with the camera!

street photography as my hobby I love spending time on that without any expectations. i keep trying to document to anything I find interesting or made me notice it. sometimes it feels great on the camera but not on my desktop and sometimes I feel I took an okay pic but on desktop I feel proud that I could capture the moment. as far as landscape photography I believe it is something we can't do everyday and take photos everyday. perhaps that is why we feel to make the most of the trip or hike we make. maybe in landscape photography one needs to slow down and not hurry to decide on a composition rather than make the most of it in the trip. even in street photography I do not always take pics. i notice a lot instead n pre visualise how it would look if I took this moment of time in this way or in this composition. i do not press the shutter button everytime . yes, if I get two to three pics that i can share with others in a month I am fairly happy with it.

    • @chrisharveyphotography
      @chrisharveyphotography  3 дні тому +2

Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences, I think the point you make about the differences in genre is very valid. I, admittedly, don't do a lot of street photography and appreciate that many of those photos can't be planned in the same way a landscape image can for example. I think the stakes are potentially higher in landscape photography as you mention!
Taking the time to just notice and pre-visualise without taking the photo is something I think we should all do, and I think most photographers probably do this to some degree without realising. It greatly benefits our photography and we learn so much from just observing the world and it's as rewarding a part of the photographic process as taking the photo.

I still thanks a valuable use of time! (I understand the irony and the bias in me saying that being someone who makes videos 😅). But I do think taking the time to get inspired and motivated is important - providing that the end goal of watching videos is for enjoyment/to learn and not as a point of comparison. I think it's too easy to compare ourselves to others when so many people are sharing their photography online.

  • @andycakebread7663

Time for anything tbh Chris... So is your photography a function of its relative priority to other competing life things? I ache to do more, for example, but find my time for 'fun' is crushed by a medical thing presently. Yet rationally this shouldn't impact other hobbies, but it does. What I have found though is it's given me time to spend with past photo trips and projects - give them due consideration and how they enrich my life and past experiences. I'm still editing a project from three years ago and now see its purpose and context into how I see my photographic life at this time. And I share to no-one bar me, unless I pop them up onto Glass or my website to be (another project years into its gestation bit that's another whole topic of confidence and motivation 😂🙄) .
    Good stuff again Chris

Thanks so much for watching Andy! Sending you all the best and wishing you a speedy recovery. Sounds to me like you're still making valuable use of your time with your photography though which is the main thing. I know that going out with the camera is the driver for a lot of people and it's where they find the most enjoyment but I personally find a lot of enjoyment from revisiting past projects and photos. I can spend hours tinkering, re-editing, re-composing images because our tastes change and we also learn as we go so it's often beneficial looking back at photos from previous years because, with our improved skills, we can often find merit or perhaps 'salvage' photos we once disregarded. Keep at it mate :).

I’ve been far less active as a photographer this year. I’ve just not been feeling it the same. So I’m still shooting, more when I go out walking to get away from it all, but not doing the gig stuff I normally do. That passion I once had has, for the moment, is nit there and is not doing anything for me.
I’ve also stopped watching a lot of UA-camrs whose primary focus is gear review related content. I think it’s detrimental to confidence and mental well-being, in as much as I don’t think it’s helpful or beneficial to watch videos from someone who is being paid to sell you stuff, even if they won’t admit it. Especially gear you know you can never afford. Or more specifically, someone who presents content that is nothing more than thinly veiled gear bragging. I’ve recently found much better use of my time to watching content creators who focus on the craft of photography… yourself and Kyle McDougall for example. Sure, there will be the odd gear review, but it’s not overkill. I’m find that more helpful.
I’ve also sold a lot of gear, and I’m now getting right back to basics with the Canon 5D and a newly acquired Nikon D700. All manual lenses, no bells, no whistles…. Just about as straightforward as it gets. I find that quite rewarding. I think a lot of this is because I work with computers everyday as a designer, so having a camera that isn’t a computer is quite refreshing.

Thanks for sharing your feelings and for watching Derren I really appreciate it, and i'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling photography in the same way at the minute - I think that's very relatable and I think it's something we all feel. I'll be very honest and transparent with you - I feel the exact same way about aspects of my commercial photography work at the moment. It's rare to get those jobs where you're passionate about what you're creating and it can easily start to feel robotic.
As I mentioned in this video, shutting out the noise of social media is difficult these days and I do think consuming inspiration in a more considered way, as opposed to just consuming everything that's out there is so important. I'm the same as you, I only watch a handful of creators and it's mainly those who align with my philosophy/approach to photography, or at least discuss the more nuanced aspects of the photographic process. I'm very flattered to be spoken about in the same sentence as Kyle McDougall - he's one of those photorgraphers that I've followed for years so thank you for that! I'm really grateful to you for watching my videos and i'm glad you find them helpful.
I hope you enjoy the new camera mate! I think making the photography process more 'analogue' and more input driven, where we actually feel engaged in the photo-making process is such a nice way to shoot. It's why I still shoot 35mm film a lot (as expensive as it is 😅).
