Do what you need/want, but I enjoyed the first 4 minutes. It's like hanging out with a pal. Everytime I see you standing there looking around with that 'now what?' vibe, I appreciate that photography is not as easy as some channels would lead me to believe.
I agree - all of James' videos are hugely original! I quite enjoy the 'informal' approach he has. Whatever he decides to do next year, I'm sure he'll smash it - looking forward to tuning in then!
I came for Micro Four Thirds content and stayed for your personality and your interesting videos beyond that. Always looking forward to seeing new videos from you.
I used to love the M4/3 specific content. I started as a noob with Canon apsc, to full frame, then Sony apsc, now Fuji apsc, and was about ready to pull the trigger on LUMIX 4/3
James, don’t sell yourself short. Your videos are always engaging because of who you are. Take today’s videos topic, we get to commiserate with you on not being able to take the photos you had planned on. It’s your discussing problems and solutions that all photographers face like myself where I’ve had a couple of weeks dry spell that that had me down in the dumps until you reminded me of it’s commonality. I also would add we have the bonus of the consistent quality of your work. Make as many as you are comfortable with and we will join in. Happy holidays.
I think it's fair to say your brand, such as it is, exists around your frank and humble self. You are who you are. And not in that flash way that comes with two middle fingers. You're a good person, and I think two a month but with what pleases you will be more fun than 10 a month without a lot of value.
The thing that stands out with your videos is you! Your personality, humour, enthusiasm, realism and humility as well as some great images. As a photographer in the early steps of his journey I can get all usual and sometimes contradictory advice from other channels on settings and gear and so on, what I get from your videos is enjoyment and inspiration and confidence that even the greats have off days, have to put in the miles and have doubts over their work. Keep doing what you do! We love it! And if you can persuade Heaton & d’Entremont I’d love a photo workshop with your three 🤣.
You and your videos are amazing James. I used to follow a lot of photography youtubers and let myself be swept away in gear stuf. Slowly i lost interest in these videos and you are one of the few i still watch every video of. I'ts not about being flashy and talking about gear. It's about photography and i love your the personality you show in your videos. Let's grow old together ;)
I'm quite happy to watch every video that you put out. Never tire of your output. There is another photographer who puts out very few vlogs, yet he pulls in well over 30k views each time he posts.
just adding my two cents' worth: I love your gentleness, it shows in your photos, and you find and show the luminousness in all your subjects: everything and everyone on Earth is important and you honour it all. And you have a great funnybone! Thank you, James.
James, the one element about your feeling of covering a particular topic of photography to ☠️ ignores likely what most of your viewers are coming to watch your videos are here for... your opinion, your take on it. People who regularly come here to watch your content care about what you have to say on the subject, trust in you, don't take that for granted, or remove that from the equation.
Always appreciated the different approach you take to the other channels and your down to earth personality. It's a breath of fresh air from many of the other photographers on here who film 15 mins of them hiking up a hill, only to take a photo of a bush and hike back down... Really looking forward to an updated take on your unique style and have a very well earned break!
Always enjoy your channel content, not always relevant to what I currently do in photography, but they have inspired me to look at other subjects with a different perspective. I hope the changes go well, and that your sponsors are supportive of your changes. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and best wishes for a prosperous New Year.
Mate, I've been with you since you had 3000 subs (and I remember because I made a comment saying something like "how can you only have 3k subs?" and you replied that you couldn't be more stoked about having that many. Fantastic!) But anyhoo, in my honest opinion; (coming from a YT junkie, mind you) - your channel is one of the most original channels on here! And it's really not so much about the topics of your videos, but more because of who you are. Your videos can never not be fun to watch! So as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't worry so much about it. You will always have a large following I'm sure. At least as long as you keep posting. And I hope you get to do this for as long as you want. Cheers!
If you can, stick with what you do and the way you do it. I found you first as a M4/3 channel and have stayed because I enjoy your work and the way you present it. Have a great Christmas!
James I would be interested in you taking us through some of your favorite photos and explaining what they mean to you and the creative process. I have learned a lot from watching your methods and would like to know more about the man -nature theme present in your work. You have things to say- don’t be afraid to go a little deeper.
I don't watch too many photography channels anymore because I found that you just get the same topics covered again and again and again. There are, however, a few channels that I still look forward to new uploads. Yours being top of the list. Largely because I love your style, largely because you've a great personality, but largely because I always learn a lot from your videos. I think it's a super difficult task to be innovative or just non-repetitive in photography videos, but the aforementioned reasons keep me coming back. And I'm sure many others here would say the same. Looking forward to the future of the channel
I have to say that I have never cut one of your videos short, they always have interest and you are very engaging. Go with what you feel and I am sure it will be excellent 👌
I only found your channel recently and have been watching for several weeks now. I must say I’ve enjoyed your content as well as your personable delivery and photos. Best wishes for the new year with slightly different goals. I’m looking forward to it.
Keep following the journey your heart takes you on. I personally enjoy everything you offer to us at whatever pace you choose. Your personality and creativity is what sets you apart from so many others and I always learn something new. Merry Christmas, James!
I recently picked up photography and found your channel right as I was getting started. Your content focusing on what you’re thinking of compositionally instead of technically have helped me take more photos that I loved than any of the other content I’ve watched here. Wholeheartedly support a less frequent content upload schedule in favor of videos you feel proud of!
Always enjoy your on location videos James (especially the ones with sheep in it!!) Looking forward to your content in the new year James. For now have great Christmas time with your family and friends!!!
James, your videos are always a great watch! Yes, you've touched the same general topic in a few videos, but it was very interesting to see how your toughts on the topic progressed and expanded. This is definitelly a part of a pull on your channel. And the conclusions are genuinely useful. I also really like the format, straight into the action and then some discussion, no 5 minute driving to the location :) I hope your new plan allows you to be more creative and feel less pressured.
Hit the nail on the head about your and everyone else’s videos. I don’t create photography videos but I do watch them. However lately I’ve been switching off. Either not watching all through, skipping or ignoring. I completely understand where you’re coming from. It must be incredibly difficult coming up with original content
James, I have to say I have always found your channel a breath of fresh air. Your combination of philosophical and phlegmatic is actually something I find I relate to. There is no arrogance about you either (although don't let that alter because of reading this!) and on UA-cam that is fairly rare. So you continue to do you and be happy as you do it. I will say one thing, though. Originality is overrated. Some subjects ought to be returned to. Yes, you did it before, but the equipment was different, technology moved on, etc - and so I think a lot of people may not want to see something that is 3, 4, 5 or older in years. Just a thought. :)
found you in the middle of this year on a family vacation, loved your wits, your photos, and of course your videos. especially you. my favourite photographer for sure! bit bummed to have less of you soon, but i respect it… all the best for next year, james!!
We'll be here for it-regardless of pace or format. Your videos are really one of the most relaxing and enjoyable content in the photography space. I'm always watching over a cup of joe since your video drops are in the morning my time. ☕ It feels like chilling out with a buddy who's sharing his latest and then learning a few things along the way. Couldn't be happier! Happy holidays and New Years, James!
Never realized you made 3 to 5 videos per month and it must be challenging and difficult to do so along with your other family responsibilities and commitments. I enjoy your content and seeing your photos you share on UA-cam and square space. Have a great Christmas and New Year.
I find your posts inspiring, and absolutely love the way you share your thoughts about photography. You’ve got a loyal fan here-I’m sticking with your channel like a tripod in a windy landscape, no matter what you decide to try out. Bold enough you strive to giving the community something unique and valuable. Thank you!
I've been taking digital photos for about 20 years now, as a hobby. Only recently I've started watching UA-cam videos about photography. Yours are among the most enjoyable, and for me the most relatable. Your one-hour challenge with Mads and Nigel was one of the funniest videos I've watched all year. Would be fun to see you do that again. Happy holidays!
I’ve watched a LOT of photography youtube videos. The two I watch regularly is Simon Dentremont for his straight forward no-nonsense instruction and yours for your fresh take on videos, your personality and character and the unique take on photography subjects. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your videos this year. I enjoy your videos and look forward to each new video as you don't take 20 plus minutes to get your point over. All the best for the festive season.
I've genuinely appreciated your work. It's unpretentious and approachable. I've been watching photographers on here for a decade and your content was the tipping point for me to consider creating my own content at the start of next year. Already got four videos in the hopper.
Do consider that even if YOU might not feel a particular video is all that great, others might think it is just fine. We all have different taste after all. So, don't be too hard on yourself.
Love your videos for their content, e.g. telling us to take pictures about and not from objects or scenes, you might not think so but these messages resonate when I am out in the field. So fully understand and support that you choose quality over quantity. My best wishes for 2025 to you and the family and the family things that are upcoming (you made me curious)
I've been here for about a year and BIG thank you for the great inspiration you've given. Here are some highlight: 1. I loved the way you brought up your video as I would refer it as 'photo hunting' type of content but in a chill and relaxing vibe makes me want to go out there and take some shots. 2. Negative clarity and some other tips from your editing video really change the way I edit my photo. 3. "Photography is completed after you print/publish your photo" you said something like that in one of your video but I don't remember which one. That makes me feel like sh*t (in a good way) when I saw tons of photos in my hard drive and all of them are unfinished photograph.
Well every two weeks is better than never seeing your channel again! I never tire of your content. And always find it fresh. An I love your style of photography!
Your channel is in my must watch list. Your personality come through and your approach is genuine and authentic. Your photos are also excellent. I’ve picked up many helpful and useful tips from watching. Keep doing what you want and I’ll continue to watch. Thanks for what you do James.
I think your passion and honesty is what a majority of your viewers like irrespective of the content. That said, you have to be happy with what you’re putting out for the passion bit to remain. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a fantastic 2025 🎉
James, you are the 'unique' subject of your channel and your work. It is important that you understand this. You bring a unique style, rhythm, and feel to both your videos and your images in an authentic 'James' way, and THAT is what people come for. And so even if you pick a subject that has been covered thousands of times, such as ISO, people watch, not so much to learn something new, but to enjoy your take on how you integrate ISO into your creative process. Do whatever you must, especially when it comes to family matters, but I don't think you need to worry about 'quality' I think you just need to continue to make everything in your own way. Authentic James, that's what people come for. And thank you! I really enjoy your channel and your work. Have a wonderful Christmas!
One thing I like about your work is that you are not afraid of daylight, using it to your advantage with your high key style. Your videos are good, thank you.
There is definetly a balance between quantity and quality, creativity and burn out, progress and stagnation. I think it’s admirable that you are brave enough to self reflect and are willing to reinvent yourself. I’ve always enjoyed your content and photographic style and I’m sure I’ll continue to do so in the future. Merry Christmas!
Very true. It's a balance. I wouldn't mind some lower effort videos mixed in though, as well. Watching a failed outing also puts into perspective our own photography isn't bad, we just get unlucky as well. But I do like seeing what they view even in these less than ideal situations. But some impressive videos mixed in helps balance things. Just a thought anyways.
Love photography and always learn from you. My fave thing about you is how real you are and dude your sense of humor always make me legit laugh out loud.
James. Thank you for your videos. You must put in an enormous amount of time and effort to photograph/film and edit them. I, like many others share an interest in the subject of photography and yes, there are many other photographers out there doing much the same as you. There are only so many times that you can cover different aspects of the art before you start to repeat yourself, but, we watch your videos because of you. It is like having a meet up with a friend who is passionate about what they do. It is your opinions that we want to hear and the way that you do this what puts you apart from many others. I look forward, as always to your future content and I will take this opportunity to wish you, your family and other subscribers a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
I got your book and am enjoying it. A lot of work went into producing it and it shows. Take a break and recharge. I will miss the frequency of your video output, but quite understand what you are saying on that topic. I will continue to watch what you present. Cheers and Merry Christmas, James, to you and your family.
Take a few weeks off, James? Over Christmas and New Year? What a concept! I enjoyed this video, understand your plans and look forward to your future, fewer, videos. Happy Christmas!
I love your work (vids and photos). You're my favourite photography artist; no ego, just friendly chat. Have a great Christmas, we'll see you when we see you.
I do look forward to your videos - weekly, bi-weekly, monthly... Its all good. I have a small set of channels that I follow, because each offers unique material, education, inspiration, and an opportunity for armchair adventure (wish I was there). I will stick with you as long as you keep uploading. All the best for the holiday season and the New Year.
James, agreeing with what everyone else has said but I’d also like to add watching your videos, for me at least, feels like a relaxing stroll with a friend, having a chat, even though it’s just you chatting. What you might think of as mediocre, we find comforting. There’s so many flashy and fast UA-camrs, perhaps this is why you stand out. We just want to come on a stroll with you, and listen to you talk about the weather and your camera ♥️
I've always enjoyed your perspective on how the sausage gets made, particularly as it's spiced with a sense of humour I greatly appreciate. Be kind to yourself :)
These shots are wonderful James. The one of the seawall and grasses has a beautiful soft timeless atmosphere. Can't believe you're going to be chirpier than you are now! :)
hi James! just to share, your authenticity is amazing and i appreciate that sometimes you might not think a video is "good enough"...but they are! don't let the imposter syndrome win! I love that you share the actual frustration of getting somewhere cool, but being let down by the light...gives hope to the rest of us
Always love what you do, and grateful for the nuggets of wisdom that you drop occasionally. I’m sure you’ll continue to educate and entertain us - as much as ever but maybe less often. Have an amazing Christmas…
I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I think it's time for at least a thank you for what you've done for my photography journey. It's a great decision trying to do videos that you're more happy with but I don't think that any of us would be bothered by a lighter video once in a while because you'd need money, we all do. I can't wait for some new content ! Merry Christmas to you and your love ones
If it helps, I don't necessarily watch your video's for the photography the journey and humour are as equally important. As you say if you need to learn about photography there are loads of dull as dish water how to vids out there. Look forward the rejuvenated you in the new year but don't forget keep on doing what you do your a natural communicator .
I love your, often unique, perspective. I don't even 'get' human nature half the time but it matters not one jot as your mix of personality, humour and insight always brightens my week. I'm sad that there will be less JP but I fully understand.
The story bit at the start is good. You talking about videos is good. Been watching since the start. I have all the books and four prints, 1 of 50 on the orange hut in Greenland I think. I like your pictures, I like your style. I’ll keep watching.
I went out in the dark this morning, all because there was a hint of pink at 6am - Was I rewarded. Just be yourself, James - two videos are fine, enjoy life and photography (and wherever they meet)
Videos with some interesting content are always great but most of all the people behind it are even greater and it is a comradery of people watching it and people making the videos that is worthwhile. This digital World and the internet as a mean of connecting it has many good benefits in our present time, and exchanging of ideas and content is inspirational. Cheers from Oregon.
I absolutely love your style of photography. I think u have a great eye for light and storytelling and im so excited for the new year and for more of your videos!
It’s finally how I feel too after finding my voice in writing and I’m excited that I can just do it forever if I want x you don’t need to have perfect videos just be you
There are very FEW creators i wait for as much as I do you. Please know that your perspective is unique and always appreciated. Merry Christmas, James!
Your channel is unique. You consistently show us your unique approach to photography. If you need to make fewer videos then we understand and I will look forward to every one of them. This video, by the way, was a good video. You showed us your approach and the pitfalls you encountered along the way. We've all gotten in the car and driven a considerable distance only to find we arrived on exactly the one day that they are doing renovations to our subject. Things happen, and you demonstrated that there is always a plan B. Thanks for what you do.
I view most of what you do as really 'slice of life' as a professional photographer. As a hobbyist, I find that mixture of struggle and success valuable. That said, it's good to have quality standards. Though you might consider the audience's bar might be lower than you think.
I think (and also reading other comments), many of us come just to watch you have a chat about photography, with a bit of dry humour, it’s your character that makes the videos entertaining. Your work is also fantastic, last week’s video around the quarry, the photos were unreal. I’d always be happy to watch you talk nonsense once a week. If you’re struggling for talking points, you could always ask us in the comments.
James, Having now some experience making videos ... I get it ! I can't imagine the pressure you guys are under to put out material which clearly you feel is affecting your creativity and work product in a negative fashion . Honestly i'd watch even if they were crap ( they're not ) because I enjoy watching a friend enjoying what he does best ! As someone who intimately understands and has experienced burnout you are making the right decision ... Do it because you like it because you enjoy it because you love it and it will shine through to your viewers has it has always in the past . Enjoy your family have a wonderful Xmas and New Years and once the pressure is off you will feel much better about life and your creative juices ! Best Art
Do what you need/want, but I enjoyed the first 4 minutes. It's like hanging out with a pal. Everytime I see you standing there looking around with that 'now what?' vibe, I appreciate that photography is not as easy as some channels would lead me to believe.

everytime there is this "now what?" vibe in his videos, i feel very seen haha
+1. definitely has his own way of doing content and is absolutely not like any other photography youtuber. I am being unironic!! love these vids
This is literally my favorite part of his videos too!
Yes this approach makes James very relatable. We all have the same problems - waiting for light, or that person to walk into frame.
I came for Micro Four Thirds content and stayed for your personality and your interesting videos beyond that. Always looking forward to seeing new videos from you.
Same
That's exactly how I found James too.
Me too
Yep!
I used to love the M4/3 specific content. I started as a noob with Canon apsc, to full frame, then Sony apsc, now Fuji apsc, and was about ready to pull the trigger on LUMIX 4/3

Been enjoying and inspired by your channel for a while, respect for taking the risk and focussing on quality. Looking forward to the next year.
I have always admired your authenticity and uniqueness James. We don’t need any more Thomas Heaton clones filming themselves making toasties in a van.
just adding my two cents' worth: I love your gentleness, it shows in your photos, and you find and show the luminousness in all your subjects: everything and everyone on Earth is important and you honour it all. And you have a great funnybone! Thank you, James.

Very relieved to hear it. You don’t need to overthink this stuff - you’re an engaging and natural communicator. Have a nice hols.
You have to do what makes you happy, we'll still be here. Your content is always thought provoking and humble.
Put simply, your videos and photography are amongst the best on UA-cam.
You’re doing it right. Keep going, and I’ll keep watching..

The reason I Watch your Videos is you, the Fact that you Talk about Photography is a Nice side Effect ☺️
I have to say that I have never cut one of your videos short, they always have interest and you are very engaging. Go with what you feel and I am sure it will be excellent 👌

Because you’re a naturally funny guy your videos are always entertaining and engaging.
Thanks for being yourself.
That's what makes you and your channel so precious.
I love watching your unique images, your sense of humor, and your videos. Thank you, long time fan.

I will be here for any videos that you share. I applaud you for focusing on quality and your life balance.
Follow your heart, it’s the only thing you must do! Keep enjoying whatever it is.
Here are some highlight:
Have a lovely Christmas James, looking forward to next year.
I always enjoy your videos. Totally where you are coming from. They say less is more.
I'm watching this channel to get some sort of tranquillity and inspiration to grab a camera and appreciate this great hobby.
One thing I like about your work is that you are not afraid of daylight, using it to your advantage with your high key style.
Your videos are good, thank you.
Great channel and videos, keep enjoying it and being yourself. It’s good to try something new for the soul. Have a great Christmas
Take care. looking forward to the greatness.
Love photography and always learn from you. My fave thing about you is how real you are and dude your sense of humor always make me legit laugh out loud.
Many thanks for your good work, James! I value what you present.
Good on you! Happy Christmas
I love your work (vids and photos). You're my favourite photography artist; no ego, just friendly chat. Have a great Christmas, we'll see you when we see you.
Happy holidays! See you next year. Love the content, I hope the new strategy is fulfilling creatively and financially. Cheers!
Do what you want the way you want to do it, we'll all still be here because... of you!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family
Your videos are honest and interesting. Do it your way!
Love your content, James!
I love your, often unique, perspective. I don't even 'get' human nature half the time but it matters not one jot as your mix of personality, humour and insight always brightens my week. I'm sad that there will be less JP but I fully understand.
I like your channel because you concentrate on composition. Plus you photograph things that others would find ordinary, and make them into art...
The story bit at the start is good. You talking about videos is good. Been watching since the start. I have all the books and four prints, 1 of 50 on the orange hut in Greenland I think. I like your pictures, I like your style. I’ll keep watching.
Looking forward to your new video structure. Love you work, you can see how much love you put on your videos. Enjoy the break
It’s finally how I feel too after finding my voice in writing and I’m excited that I can just do it forever if I want x you don’t need to have perfect videos just be you
Happy New Year, James!
enjoy the holidays James
Keep it up James, you have one of the best photography channels on YT. Look forward to your videos next year 👍
There are very FEW creators i wait for as much as I do you. Please know that your perspective is unique and always appreciated. Merry Christmas, James!
I’ll support whichever direction you take! I can only dream of getting to your level one day in this UA-cam photography game!
Hi James it's natural to feel disheartened but keep doing what you do as we all like your work. Always interesting mate ☃️👍🏻🎁⛄☃️ have a good Christmas
Best Art
