A friend shared this video with me. It makes me homesick for Calitri where we have a little house in the hilltop borgo. We hope to get back there soon.
As with so many of your videos on various subjects, you succinctly describe life in your village. Indeed, it is very similar to the array of choices in our own hilltown village in Marche. However, I would add another layer to your commercial services -- public services, which people often overlook. Our village offers a free clinic, excellent maintenance of streets and public spaces, a free EMT and ambulance service, and has recently installed fiber optic cable connections to every business and home. (The speed and capacity of our service increased exponentially). It should also be said that many hilltowns all over Italy have experienced dramatic de-population due to mortality, smaller family sizes, and the lack of employment opportunities -- causing younger people to go elsewhere. Hence, many towns do not have enough population to support the wide variety and quality of goods and services we enjoy. Many Americans are used to finding similar choices in goods and services no matter where they choose to live. That is not the case in Italy. Some small villages resemble ghost towns. This highlights the need to actually visit towns and spend time in them first, before choosing a house -- especially one that may look fabulous in an online listing. Consider the quality of your total life, not just the home.

Pizza flour is high in gluten. Gluten is the protein that gives wheat its taste. Unless you have Celiac disease, which is very rare, gluten should not bother you. If you get violently ill after having bread you probably have the disease. Otherwise it's good for you. It's protein!

Every shop is a wine shop! Some of the best wine I have ever had is for sale in Nunzias store for 2 Euros a bottle. No artificial ingredients, everything is natural and it was made in the village. Really good wine!
Chris, very true. We bought a bottle of the red wine when we first arrived and it was excellent. We also purchased some wine from Conad in Scaleo, which was also good but we liked the wine from Nunzia’s store the best. 🍷 Cin! Cin!
Hi David, While all of Italy has earthquakes, I researched this area and felt comfortable that there were fewer risks of highly damaging quakes than in other areas in Italy such as along the Apennines.
I would love to live in a quaint little town like this. I am hoping to retire in 2 years and do some consulting work. What is the internet service like in the village there?
Hi , it’s great to see your video, could you tell exactly where is the town located? I missed the name, I have been to Italy in different areas, and dreaming to stay there longer if it is feasible.
Hi! Thank you! The prices here are way lower than in California. Yesterday I went to get my car detailed. They completely detailed it and it cost me 15E. Almost everything is a lot cheaper here.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC That’s great to hear Chris. Speaking of cars/driving…Do you have an Italian drivers license? I hear it’s pretty tough to get one.
I have to say it does all look beautiful but my question is how would the locals welcome my family. We are Jewish and like many would be nervous because we know in many places we were not welcome and sometimes old habits do not go away. What is your view. ?
Hello, I have found ash the people in our area in Calabria are welcoming to everyone who wants to be here and be part of the community. As long as you respect the culture and traditions, and seek to be part of the community they will love you!
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC I have been in Italy many times, almost every year since 2013. But since the pandemic, I haven’t gone there. What I was referring is to live there. Italy is a very beautiful place.
Hi Garry, It depends on your lifestyle and if you have a car. The car is probably the biggest expense here. In order to become a resident you have to show passive income of 31,000 E per year as an individual and 38,000 as a couple. You can live well on that here in Calabria.
There are closing store all over Scalea which is a short drive. We also get Amazon.it up here. There is a hardware store in the lower village and you can get EVERYTHING there.
Hello, I am intetested to rent a property for 6 month next year from may at Santa Domenica Talao, you can help me? I am leaving in USA and I am Italian. Thanks

I don't now. I have not kept track. Last night however we had a fabulous pizza and a bottle of wine that was amazing. The pizza was 5.50 and the wine 1.79.
MY PREFERENCE FOR CHOICE OF COUNTRY TO MOVE TO IS ITALY...BUT, IT'S WAY OVER MY PRICE RANGE...PORTUGAL IS VERY CHEAP...YOU CAN BUY A SMALL PIECE OF LAND THERE WITH AN OLD STONE RUIN FOR AS LOW AS 10,000 EUROS...;)
I understand that there are pretty strict zoning laws though. So even if you own a lot of land you may be restricted as to what your can build or how you can renovate.
I always find it amusing when you say to Americans “it’s all here, you don’t have to drive” In Europe we take for granted how close amenities are.Years ago I traveled to the States and couldn’t believe I had to drive everywhere to get stuff and how little that people walked 😳 Ps great video 👍😁
Thank you! I know! It is so liberating not having to get your car and drive, plus you see things and people so much more up close and personal. I love it!

@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC Thanks -I'm originally Italian myself but from the north (near Venice) I know people from the town of Arena which is in Calabria too but further inland -near the large city of Cosenza I think. This area has had a very marked Greek influence and was actually ruled by the Greek Byzantines up until the 10th Century A.D. when the Normans(Viking descendants) arrived. The word "Talao" comes from the Greek "thalos."

wow! thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
thank you. one of your most interesting. What about a wine shop?
Every shop is a wine shop! Some of the best wine I have ever had is for sale in Nunzias store for 2 Euros a bottle. No artificial ingredients, everything is natural and it was made in the village. Really good wine!
Chris, very true. We bought a bottle of the red wine when we first arrived and it was excellent. We also purchased some wine from Conad in Scaleo, which was also good but we liked the wine from Nunzia’s store the best. 🍷 Cin! Cin!
Charming village. Is there much seismic activity there? The topic of risk of natural disasters is a good one to expand upon in a future vid.
Hi David,
While all of Italy has earthquakes, I researched this area and felt comfortable that there were fewer risks of highly damaging quakes than in other areas in Italy such as along the Apennines.
I would love to live in a quaint little town like this. I am hoping to retire in 2 years and do some consulting work. What is the internet service like in the village there?
Hi Liza1 We have great internet here! I upload videos all th teime!
Thank you so very much for showing us the reality of living there. We can dream……💗💖💝💖
You are so welcome!
Hi , it’s great to see your video, could you tell exactly where is the town located? I missed the name,
I have been to Italy in different areas, and dreaming to stay there longer if it is feasible.
Hi Veronika, It is Santa Domenica Talao in Calabria
It’s great to get a feel for the village with your tour! How are the grocery prices?
Hi!
The cost of groceries and household items is incredibly cheap by US standards. The produce is fresh, organic and again very affordable.
I live in uk but life is to stressful
Can’t cope no more need to relax now
Yes you need to come to Italy
I have to say it does all look beautiful but my question is how would the locals welcome my family. We are Jewish and like many would be nervous because we know in many places we were not welcome and sometimes old habits do not go away. What is your view. ?
Hello,
I have found ash the people in our area in Calabria are welcoming to everyone who wants to be here and be part of the community. As long as you respect the culture and traditions, and seek to be part of the community they will love you!
It will be lovely to live in a town like that. I’m 65 with some light medical issues that need to be attended, so I have to stay in USA.
Hi Jorge, WE love it here. Perhaps you can come visit someday.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC I have been in Italy many times, almost every year since 2013. But since the pandemic, I haven’t gone there. What I was referring is to live there. Italy is a very beautiful place.
you probably already answered this, about how much a month does it take to be comfortable there? for 2?
Hi Garry, It depends on your lifestyle and if you have a car. The car is probably the biggest expense here. In order to become a resident you have to show passive income of 31,000 E per year as an individual and 38,000 as a couple. You can live well on that here in Calabria.
Any dress shoe shops, lumber shops?
There are closing store all over Scalea which is a short drive. We also get Amazon.it up here. There is a hardware store in the lower village and you can get EVERYTHING there.
Can you order items from Amazon and get delivery to this town? Or is there a different delivery service that is used in this area?
amazon.it definitely works here!
Hello, I am intetested to rent a property for 6 month next year from may at Santa Domenica Talao, you can help me? I am leaving in USA and I am Italian. Thanks
Hi there, we don't have any long-term rentals in SDT; I'd suggest you check airbnb or booking.com to see if you can arrange for a long-term rental from the listings. You might also check www.idealista.it.
Is it possible to live there 6 months out of the year and 6 months back in the U.S. during retirement?
Yes it is but you have to have residency here to do so.
How much do you spend a month on groceries?
I don't now. I have not kept track. Last night however we had a fabulous pizza and a bottle of wine that was amazing. The pizza was 5.50 and the wine 1.79.
So clever
Thank you!
Hi Chris! How do you get there? By bus? Is it possible to live there without a car?
You can live here without a car. I have one. I need it for the BNB's.
Would it be possible to get the name of the town. Thanks
Santa Domenica Talao.
The prices in the south are low but again there are passive cinema requirements to live here.
I understand that there are pretty strict zoning laws though. So even if you own a lot of land you may be restricted as to what your can build or how you can renovate.
Is there an Italian village in Calabria that is paying people 28k Euros to move there? Si or No?
That I have not researched
did you buy or rent ?
We purchased our home in 2011
Great!
Thank you Heather!
I love it!
What's the name of his town
Santa Domenica Talao
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC thanks nice place
It’s beautiful. I’m concerned about medical care. I’m heathy but you never know.... is population under 20,000? Looking for 7% flat tax.
Our village is way less than 20,000. e have a hospital in Belvedere Marittimo which is about 25 minutes away. There is talk about reopening the one in Praia as well.
Why didn't you show the famous Church of St Joseph?
You can see it on various other videos.
What is the name of the town?
Santa Domenica Talao
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC Thanks -I'm originally Italian myself but from the north (near Venice) I know people from the town of Arena which is in Calabria too but further inland -near the large city of Cosenza I think. This area has had a very marked Greek influence and was actually ruled by the Greek Byzantines up until the 10th Century A.D. when the Normans(Viking descendants) arrived. The word "Talao" comes from the Greek "thalos."
Very nice little town to bad from what I hear I’m the wrong color to live there .
Are you purple? Every color is welcome here, possibly even purple people.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC Lol no I’m not purple, I live in Miami and people always think I’m Dominican for some reason, the fact that my wife is from Dominican rep also doesn’t help with that but you get the idea, my grand father was from Tuscany and immigrated to the The Caribbean when he was 2 with his family and never went back that makes me eligible for an Italian citizenship so I have been planing on moving my family there. I’m am planning a trip for the summer to check it out but when doing some research I have come accesos some very disturbing information about how people of the darker shade are viewed over there, hopefully I will get a better perspective when I’m there.
By the way love your videos very informative.
How to live in this country nowadays?😱
There are some new challenges with the continuing pandemic but nothing that can't be overcome...
italy is the best and so are the italians
Absolutely!
Move best place to live best food less headache
We love it here.
What type of visa allows an American to stay in the country longer than 6 months? A noramal tourists can't just stay in most countries indefinitely, I believe. Thanks!
That would be an Elective Residency Visa.
U always in my hart
Thank you Jilani! Thinking of you!
Do you need to speak fluent Italian to live there, I’d didn’t hear you speak to anyone
I do speak Italian but you don't have to. Obviously it is best if you learn and once you are here if you study and try to speak it, you will pick it up.
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC thank you, we are living on Spain and are learning it more all the time, who knows, maybe Italy is down the road.
What? No Walmart? Then you’re paying too much!
Have you been here to see what the prices are? You are in for a shock when you finally get here. Review my other videos and see what the cost of living is here vs California
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC LOL, I was kidding, I’m a huge fan of the local red wine Aglianico from your area. Drinks like a $100 Nebbiolo at a fraction of the price. Love the area, you are blessed.
or you can come here to Lviv Ukraine which is just as beautiful but half the price of Italy, which i do love also, but my pension works better here!!
Awesome Carrey!
🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🍷🍷🍷🎉🍾🥂🤙
Woohoo!!
Super cap on super repectable lady
Thank you Jilani!
