Hi, I visit Italy every year from time when I studied in Padova for one year, but sadly never visit the South. I am going to travel from North to South of Italy by my motorcycle. Finally I am ready to permanently move to Italy. I am looking for the best place to live and work. Can you advise where to look for a house in Calabria? Maybe some good web site? Grazie Mille.

Ahhhh, Calabria.. It truly is Italy's hidden treasure ❤ I am only 33 but I am already planning to 'retire' over there as soon as I put away enough savings to buy a small house with a little garden.. I spent two years over there a decade ago, left because of the economical situation, but I still consider those two years the best time of my life, where I felt and looked my best, for no apparent reason, I think it's the food and the air and the breathtaking views that just makes one enjoy life a whole lot more. The scenery in Calabria is just magical, the green is greener over there, the food tastier than anywhere else, people are so warm and welcoming. I live in Malta currently, a stone throw away, the culture is supposed to be similar and it's the same Mediterranean Sea around me, but I can't even imagine settling here.. Calabria took my heart away 10 years ago and I just KNOW that this is the place where I want to move permanently and start a family. I agree with everything you say, Calabria is a truly beautiful place, peaceful, with pristine nature, and genuine people who enjoy a slow pace of life, their families and friends more than anything. It just feels like home there... I can't wait to be back there, I miss the quietness, the midday breaks for a nap, the olive yards, the green hills falling right into the sea.. There is no place like it ❤

Thank you giving such accurate and TRUE information about Italy and highlight what good and positive there is there.
Some are stupidity and ignorantly always thinking about mafia when thinking about Italy. But Italy, the good Italy, has nothing to do with that and people shall understand that the vaste majority, practically the totality of Italians are decent people and Italy is indeed beautiful in every sense.
I’m glad that you understood this and appreciate what marvelous Italy has to offer. Of course is not all flowers, but where is it after all? Over all Italy has a lot to offer and a lot to enjoy from welcoming people, exceptional gastronomy, magnificent seasides, countrysides, gorgeous mountains , lakes, forests and incomparable history and arts, cities, monuments as no other country in the world!
And I don’t say this because...I’m proudly Italian.

Thank you! We actually just did a video addressing the idea of the Mafia because people do ask however the Italian government has done a LOT to ensure that the Mafia is not a problem for the residents and tourists. We have been there for 10 years and have never seen or heard of any problems anyone we know have had. We know lots of people and they run businesses and what not. It has not been a problem. What we have seen is lovely people, beautiful scenery, fantastic food, and just a beautiful atmosphere that you cannot find anywhere else. You are right to be very proud of your country.

Calabria is truly wonderful, as are many other regions of the country. But having lived in Italy for the past 4 years, I would like to put the word out. Although it may seem idyllic and peaceful, living in Italy is very different from traveling and spending a few weeks here. There is a reason why these villages and one euro houses houses are abandoned, and you have ancestors coming from Italy - people leave, they don’t want to stay here. And doing any house repairs in Italy could be quite a task, let alone structural ones. However, even with good housing, the bureaucracy and the inability to plan your budget (as some services, the heating, for example, have quite unpredictable charges) will always be present in your life. Having said that, I know people who like it here very much but these are usually those who have a lot of savings or can spend their time in various offices, telephone calls, comunas.
I hope you will think twice before making the decision to move to Italy. It’s best to come here on holiday. This way your affection for this beautiful country will not be spoilt by the harsh realities of living in the Italian economy.
I rarely write comments, but I really hope that for some people this might be useful and motivating to do their own research more thoroughly.

    • @SuperSavvyTravelersLLC
      @SuperSavvyTravelersLLC  4 роки тому +4

YEs everyone must do their own research and it is best to go and spend some time there before moving however the people I know how have moved, most of them have loved it and continue to love it despite inconveniences. Every place has its problems. You are right though, you must find out before you commit.

I think that once you have lived in Italy you can't think of living anywhere else. I live at the other end of the country, in the north on Lake Maggiore near the Swiss border. All the things you mention in your video with reference to Calabria are true here too. Wonderful neighbours, amazing food, gorgeous scenery (we have the Alps and the lakes!). Property in this area is much more expensive though, but nowhere near the prices of property in the UK, where I lived before. Nice cool mountain summers here, which for me is an advantage. I can't cope with Calabrian summer temperatures! When you do your Sicily tour, stop off on the Isole Egadi. Marettimo is beautiful.

My great great grandfather was from Calabria, unlike many other Americans, which I am an American as well, my great great grandfather moved to Colombia where my ancestors came together and now we are in the US. But I would like to "repatriate" back to Italy, I liked that word. I am trying to convince my parents to retire there, the American retirement culture makes anything else seem like such an adventure when it really could be totally normal and even better. Hopefully these dreams will come true! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I’m glad I have found your channel, thanks for sharing your experience and shining the spotlight on this authentic, wild and rustic region. I have been traveling to Calabria all my life (my parents were born there) and I lived there with my family when I was a child. There are plenty of reasons why I keep going back and it’s still very undiscovered (compared to other southern regions) which makes it a hidden gem. You need to embrace the region and don’t expect a picture perfect postcard experience, it is not, it has its problems (just like every other place in the world where organized crime happens) but it is stunningly beautiful and its people are its heart, and only here did I feel safe to walk around my parent’s village at 4am in the morning!

I really thank you, everything you say is absolutely true! Most people when they think about Italy, they think of Venice, Rome, Florence, Milan, etc. But they ignore totally the beauty of south Italy!!
Just remember one thing, south Italy in 1860 was called “kingdom of two Sicilys” it was an independent state before Italy became what is today, and that was one of the richest place in the world at that time, so you can see still today amazing thing of that antique history. That history give us today our unique food, culture, buildings, piazzas, and much much more. One of the very first school of medicine in the world born in south Italy, same fore one of the very first railway.
Last but not least south Italy is in the mediterraneo... something that is really unique, Italy doesn’t have oceans but it has “il mare” that is a totally different way to enjoy the sea!
Come to Italy and start to learn a bit of Italian... it will worth the effort and change your life.
    Benvenuti in Italia :)

Thanks for information on area, but what about taxes, retirement income from usa, visa, can American's actually own property outright, or is it like some other countries, where u own it for only X amount of years, but not outright for generational, what about crime, race per population, actual employment numbers, weather, especially all active volcanoes down there in Southern Italy, Sicily, etc. evac support from Italian Gov., insurance for home investment, citizen's rights to land and prop ownership, etc. otherwise, I think it's beautiful. Love everything about it. nervous about losing everything, like many expats did in Spain, walked away with nothing. lost everything, diff variables of course, but for me, i'd def, keep my home in usa and get vacation home, low investment, but def not permanent, maybe dual citizenship?
