Speaker Biography:
Dr. Bruno Sainz is a Ramón y Cajal Researcher, with co-appointments in the Department of Biochemistry at the Autónoma University of Madrid, the Department of Cancer Biology at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas "Alberto Sols" CSIC-UAM and in the Chronic Diseases and Cancer Area of the Ramón y Cajal Institute for Health Research. Dr. Sainz obtained his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Tulane University in 2005, and began working on cancer in 2011 after joining the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre as a Staff Scientist. He currently heads the Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Microenvironment group, focusing on the study of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the fibroinflammatory microenvironment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
Webinar:
The Use of Flow Cytometry to Identify Cancer Stem Cells in Primary Tumors and in Circulation
Webinar Abstract:
What is desperately needed are methods to detect cells that cause metastasis-known as cancer stem cells (CSC), a subpopulation of tumor cells with “stem” like, chemoresistant and unlimited self-renewal properties. This webinar will discuss the advancements in the detection of CSCs in primary tumors and in circulation using acoustic flow cytometry together with a new CSC marker, autofluorescence and other CSC markers.
Learning Objectives:
How cancer stem cells can be identified using flow cytometry
-What factors that should be considered when using flow cytometry to identify cells from tumors and from blood
-About sample preparation and choosing CSC markers
