    On my 2017 RAM Cummins I ran data logs with the stock filter and K&N. In 3rd gear start at 2,000RMP floored it through the top of 5th gear. Log comparison showed 0.25 more Boost PSI; 403.4 CFM increase to 422.2 CFM with K&N. MAP went from 47.2 to 48.2. I have about 20 more horsepower and Exhaust Temps dropped 7 degrees. I did this exact run first on Stock, changed filter on the road and repeated the run so conditions are close. Then I did a run to the Post Office and where for I live in the mountains my fuel avg generally drops -0.1mpg when I go. This test run +0.2 mpg increase for that 20 miles stretch. So I am flappy with my K&N oilled filter. I do NOT worry about oil on the Maf sensor. That is easily cleaned. I have a Banks Elbow, Banks Intercooler, tunes, and soon to add BD Manifold using stock turbo. As an aside comparing runs using a ‘race’ tune vs ‘stock’ tune, 3rd to 5th as mention above is about 2 full seconds faster on race.

    Less is more, when you spray a mist of oil, on the K&N air filter, which you cleaned and allowed to dry.
    I have used them since 2004 and they last and last. I use one on my 2019 as well.

    I have had multiple vehicles with K&N filter. I haven't done dyno runs to compare power.
    I use them because there more cost effective in the long term.
    The oil thing is a joke that develops from people with no mechanical understanding. If you wipe the filter box and tube just down stream of the filter there is no oil. But modern cars have crank/heads breather tubes connected to the air intake. With modern light oils these breather tubes results in oil on the intake.
    All the people knocking k&n generally don't have catch cans, so the oil fumes from engine actually is what is adding oil. Also when you pull the filter out the oil hasn't disappeared that's why you have to clean them with degreaser.
    Note that motor bikes and cars have used oil soaked filters for years without issues before k&n came along.
    Most of the warranties issues are because it is in the car dealers interest to pin the fault of an issue on anything but the manufacturer.
    For the record my cars have more than 200,000 km on them, filters went in at 30,000 km.

    Those are performance filters. Simple as that. You will get more air flow and alittle more power. That being said, you will be sucking in quite a bit more dust and sand. I change my oil every 5,000 miles and sent the last two samples in to be tested. One with k&n air filter the other with oem. And the k&n one had almost 3 times more silica in it than the oem, not good at all. Same highways driven everyday. My opinion, if it’s a daily driver or family car that’s driven frequently go oem or paper, if it’s your sports car you drive couple times a week don’t put a lot of miles on it before changing oil, go k&n

    • @patthonsirilim5739
      @patthonsirilim5739 7 місяців тому

      For road car it’s useless you barely make any more power and your sacrificing filtration so your use application is more limited then stock making it less appealing for daily use but if it’s for sports car that you only track or daily then yeah why not the small extra throttle response and increase power is definitely worth the sacrifice.

    I’ve used them in 4 of my families vehicles and all are doing great no issues. To be honest, I’m a lazy man, I don’t use them as intended I just buy a new one every 50,000 miles. They do slightly improve throttle response at first, but your cars computer will eventually even out that power curve to seem more normal. In my experience, you absolutely get better mileage even if it’s only 5% better. I care about fuel consumption, and these have the potential to help so I always put these in my cars.

    yes, a too much oil in the filter can be sucked off, but so is all the fine sand that misses the regular filter.
    they seem marginaly beter than OEM filters, especially if those are just paper, the gap is smaller for those OEM filters made out of cloth like material (or sponge).

  • @Ottobon

    The MAF stuff happens if you over-oil them after washing them, its user error basically. There are some good oil guides but the gist is if you wash them and need to re oil using too little is better then too much, you basically just need to cover 1/3 the filter it naturally spreads over coarse of about 4 hours, some people try to soak the whole thing.
    Personally my opinion is if stock intake go with good cheap paper filter like WIX and change it often, if some sort of aftermarket intake setup then K&N or similar (most the off brands are rebranded "discount" stuff made by K&N heh, Kirkland K&N if you will, almost any of the cone type stuff)

    Supposedly the pores are bigger on k&n filters which is why oil is needed to make dust stick and not travel into the engine, which is why you might get more power from better airflow. The oil is possibly just transmission fluid and I have even used rotella to oil a washed k&n filter. I see really no harm nor great benefit personally, except for the reusability.

  • @tajmisquitta3536
    @tajmisquitta3536 Місяць тому

    1. There are plenty of guides through the internet on how to apply the oil on the filter.
    2. Apply the oil on the outside face of the filter only. Applying on both sides and too heavy handed is what clogs the MA/O2 sensors.
    3. Many car shops especially your manufacturer service center know how to apply it and usually have the oil required and during a service will air clean and re-oil your filter (at least the shop where I send my car since the past year I have used a K&N does it for me).
    4. There are videos of this working on older cars quite significantly. However, in my case I can say my throttle response has improved and also the low end responsiveness. Making your exhaust less restrictive really made the difference more apparent. And putting your stock filter back on with a less restrictive exhaust will really make you tell the difference when using a K&N filter.
    5. Lastly, it lets a lot of induction and turbo noises out and that is worth a psychological +100hp 😅.

    They are hella good! I even talked to a representative from K&N and they’ve ran multiple tests with a super saturated filters to see if it would do anything to the sensor and all tests left the sensor fine. Rule of thumb when oiling, spray both sides until it looks covered, let it sit for about 15min, respray any parts that look lighter so it’s uniform. Oh and wipe off the edge rubber and you’re good to go👍

    Bought a 2007 Legacy with one of these in it from the previous owner. Maf sensor was caked, and the car spark knocked a bit on wot. Threw it out, replaced with a standard filter, cleaned the maf sensor, and the car ran way smoother through the power band. Maybe had a smidge less kick from stop, but I prefer clean air and a longer lasting engine to a little bit of extra noise and a nominal (at best) increase to pickup. Subies are finicky. They like having the parts they were designed for.

    I’ve used both oiled and dry (mesh) filters for over 25 years. While I never had an issue with the oiled ones, there are reports of oil fouling the MAF sensor thus messing up the F/A ratio. I currently only use the dry type because they are easier to maintain and actually flow more air. The fouling issue is most likely from users over-oiling.

    I've ran them in many of my cars and put alot of miles on them and it's a misconception on the adding hp/trq. Without any type of tune the car won't gain very much to any but what people do see is a clean air filter so it's back to spec and any loss from being dirty is regained. But no issues or complaints my daily I clean every other oil change people never change their air filter enough. Not sure on the voiding of warranty but my dad cleaned his own and oiled the wrong side and ran it well it gummed up maf and got on side of housing anf throttle body and took a few times of cleaning to get it back to no warning from CEL but no issues about 5k miles since that and no problems. And yes a thin even spay, saturation is not necessary and can cause issues if it get through. I like mine and no issues, that's with the drop in the tube and cone make it a hot air intake and one again it adds no hp without a tune the cpu would restrict any excess air not required to operate at its tune.

    I had used the cone and oil type air filter before, it damaged both the MAF and MAP sensors to the point I had to replace them. After I switched it to another brand that is the dry filter w/o any oil needed I had no issues. My take on the drop-in type that is oiled might not damage the MAF sensor as fast as the cone type cos the airbox reduce the turbulance of the airflow with a lot of obtacles. So the oil takes a while to reach the MAF sensor. If you wish to use the cone type, my take is to rinse off most of the oil and cover it with the dry charger mesh.😜

    Been running one on my 2007 ram 1500 5.7 for around 17 years now. Been no issue with sensors, clean it less often than I probably should, but I can wash it at home and not worry about the parts store being closed when I need one. One time $80 purchase vs a new paper one every 5000km? Even with the cost of the recharge/cleaning kits, i’m still ahead. Im at 600000km, thats 120 air filters I would have gone through. At $20 a pop thats $2400 on air filters. Or one $80 filter and a new cleaning kit when I run out of oil on the last one… easy choice.
    Their downside is they DO let more particles through than the paper filters. So your engine will be a bit more dirty. Clean out your air intake and keep up on your oil changes and its not a big deal.
    I’ve saved money and put less waste in the garbage dumps. Win win. :D

They definitely let more dirt through and they are hard to get the right amount of oil on. If you get to much the turbo will suck that oil into the intake and coat all the sensors causing sensors to get inaccurate readings and cause issues. There are too many other ways to get tons of power without letting dirt into your engine.

    I believe these filters depends on the user. If you maintain your car on a regular. Clean the filter when it needs to and properly oiling it. It'll be a decent filter. Definitely not a huge performance boost By any means. But if you want something to jist throw in your car and forget about, probably don't use this filter.

    It all comes down to re-oiling them properly after cleaning. Lot of people overdue it.
    Also depends on the environmental conditions you drive in. In dusty conditions you are better off with a factory paper style filter.

    I’ve never had a problem. And I’ve never had an issue with the dealer about them. Whenever I buy a car, first thing I do is take out that cheap air filter, and slap in one of those before I leave the dealership. As far as increased horsepower, and performance.. maybe a little difference 🤷

    Yes, it does give you more power. I can notice it in both of my Corollas 17 and 18 but since there is more air coming in, the computer tells the fuel injectors to spray more gasoline which leads into lower MPG. I got 2.3mpg less in both of my vehicles for over 4 months already.

      In a way thats true but not at the same time. I used these over that past 10 years & I have 1 currently on my 2018 corolla & it improved my mpg. Yes the computer will tell the car to pump more fuel but when your in a corolla & obviously your not racing on that. You will have better throttle response & car will move a little more easily so you won't have to use a little more pressure on the accelerate thus saving you gas

    K&Ns are less restrictive then the ol paper filters and are reusable - yes the oil can mess up your sensors - yes sometimes its bad enough to need them completely replaced - also they dont filter out as many particles so your engine doesnt breathe as clean of air - does it matter? i dunno all up to what you want. I have learned, wash and oil the filter before you use it. They come way over oiled from the factory. Clean it and apply the oil lightly on the dirty side, don’t put oil on the engine side. If you do it this way you’ll never have an issue and you’ll see great power gains and especially fuel mileage gains. I have a 2013 f150 with the base 3.7 v6 and average 26.5 mpg on the highway. With a standard fram I’m lucky to get 22.

    Look up Project Farm's air filter comparison. While K&N air filters do flow better, it comes at the cost of filtering quality. They let much more contamination into your engine than a Wix or Purolator air filter does. The oil does also contaminate MAF sensors. Some more than others. 3rd Gen Tacomas, for example, have MAF sensors that get contaminated quite easily, not just from K&N, but other aftermarket filters and intakes that utilize oil.

  • @Shade_Tree_Mechanic
    @Shade_Tree_Mechanic 10 місяців тому +4

    Project Farm tested multiple filters and found that the K&N does give you the most airflow. The problem is that it also lets much more dirt through than a standard filter. So if it's a track car or something I'd run K&N. For a daily driver I'll run OEM or similar aftermarket.

    It is worth if the K&N filter is brand new, like yours. it lasted quite a long time but then if you drive in a very dusty environment, all bets are off. However it is not worth to clean and oil it yourself. I sprayed too much oil-mess up my mass air sensor. You just have to know what you are doing in cleaning and oil it up.
