    One little thing that will always stay with me from Bioshock is an audio diary found in the garden.
    A mother describes a trip to the gardens with her daughter.The daughter was born in Rapture and thinks the trees are monsters. The mom is horrified by this and question whether bringing her daughter to Rapture was the right idea.
    Which is darkly ironic, because much earlier in the game, you find a diary where the mother describes finding her missing daughter. Who has been turned into a little sister.
    Bioshock was absolutely phenomenal in how it built the horrific reality of Rapture through environmental storytelling, character design, and side stories told through the audio diaries.

      This is an issue that needs to get addressed more often in linear games. The Evil Within comes to mind as one of the worst offenders I've ever seen; just countless points of no return that feel pointless and especially annoying. There's always a major disconnect between player and intention when you have to make guesses on which path will throw you into a whole new section vs. nab you another collectible. One of few series to execute it well is Dead Space, in which your path is clear, but it's not forced onscreen at all times, and has a diagetic implementation.

    The worst part about this game was that Ken Levine was adamant that it was an attack on objectivism. I don't think he knows what objectiveism even is. He needs to go back and do his research. Objectivism does not allow for dictatorships to take root. If you've never read it, you need to.

  • @ChairmanKam

    25:00 Yes and no. The city only falls when Ryan gives up on his philosophy, but the point that if you create a system where everyone can succeed those that want to destroy you can succeed too was well expressed. An actual flaw with Objectivism which was pretty clearly shown by accident. Levine has repeatedly proven he doesn't actually understand Rand.

    I actually liked the quest arrow, primarily because I get turned around so damn easily that by the time I’ve explored all the avenues in an environment I’ve forgotten where I’m supposed to be going in the first place. Then again most things critics bash for being hand-holdy are things that I need to play games in general, so maybe I’m biased?

    • @chancecomic1595
      @chancecomic1595 Рік тому +7

      Maybe you're biased, but you're still valid if you like and/or need things like quest arrows to navigate a game. Critics and gamers do often make fun of "hand-holdy" game design elements, but I think that's probably because they feel like they're being belittled by the devs. Thing is, this can be an issue if these elements are there for accessibility reasons, like if you need or want colour-blind or increased contrast filters to see things properly, or subtitles to understand characters, or a quest arrow to help you navigate the level. It's fine to not want your intelligence insulted by devs, it's not fine to belittle others if they need these features to enjoy the game.
      If you need or want a quest arrow, in-game tutorial, subtitles, or any other feature, all power to you. I myself love subtitles, and am always confused why they aren't on by default in every game. I also need things like high FOV and no motion blur so I don't get headaches. Personally, my only issue with the quest arrow is that it's constantly there, obviously out of place at the top of the screen, and on by default. I think it would be better if it were like the quest arrow from Call of Juarex: Gunslinger, which is an arrow that snakes along the floor for a few seconds when you press a button. They could also have a little prompt when you start a new game asking if you want the arrow and/or subs, like they do with the brightness

    • @Funko777
      @Funko777 8 місяців тому

      @@chancecomic1595The reason people hate them is because well designed games don't need them. They are typically a sign of poor level design or mechanics that make naturally exploring the world or completing tasks impossible. In all honesty a player should be able to complete most linear games without a HUD at all. The world and art design should clearly communicate where you can and should maybe try to go and what things can be interacted with.
      It's usually not that people feel belittled but overbearing UI markers and especially things like companion "hints" (which currently plague AAA western 3rd person action games) end up essentially playing the game for you. Paying 60 bucks for a game that then solves what little challenge the devs had the courage to put in there just sounds like a really expensive movie ticket except I can sometimes control the little guy on the screen.
      Some players may have ended up liking their experience more had they not blindly followed a giant arrow. Maybe they got a bit lost and then ambushed by splicers only to narrowly escape and find their way back and now they have a better understanding of the level. An experience they would've missed out on had they simply followed the god arrow. I mean exploration has been a core challenge in videogames from the very start so I too find it a bit sad that a QA guy said this game, which is completely linear, takes place totally indoors, and has small maps to begin with requested a giant golden quest marker lol
      So no, it's not due to people being anti hand holding necessarily, but more the question of why would a player need to have their hand held by the UI in your game and levels? That being said, the extent some studios went to attract the largest possible audiences meant their games got drastically easier and more casual which would often times make zero sense in the world they're trying to depict their game in. Simply put, I'll never feel like I'm truly on an adventure if I know there's zero challenge or risk. Thankfully, due to Dark Souls impact on the industry we're seeing more devs embrace the more hands off approach and instead rely on competent world design. Puppet shows are always better when you don't see the puppeteer's hand or hear him cough, no?
      As for accessibility...idk, I think people need to reevaluate how they think about it. There is no way to make every game accessible to every person with a physical or mental condition. Nothing works like that in the world. If I didn't have legs I wouldn't think to myself that it'd be great to play soccer and the field should accommodate my condition. I do find it odd too that I've literally never even seen or heard a person with an actual debilitating condition (not colorblindness) ask for more "accessibility" options. It's actually been the exact opposite where those people who have lived with whatever condition their entire lives know what they're capable of and how to alter their approach to playing that game if it's something they want. It's how most have had to approach literally any activity yet video games are the one thing people seem to all of a sudden be really passionate about on behalf of all those folks who can't stick up for themselves 🙄 The people crying about "accessibility" are typically people who pretend to be sticking up for folks with conditions yet they almost always have their own motives...like I remember this being a hot topic a couple years ago, "Sekiro is too hard how could blind people play this?? Your company is clearly neglecting all the blind people who want to play this game because they voted me in as their leader and I know!" While what they really mean is Sekiro is too hard for them and they don't want to learn the game or meet it on its terms so they want to cry loud enough and disguise it as actually being a really humble selfless act to help all those people who just so happen to want to play the same game they're playing lol
      Things like colorblind options, control scheme options for using a one handed controller, subtitles, etc are all great things to add to a game but when people start expecting devs to somehow add in UI and gameplay modifications that can magically accommodate any level of mental or physical disability without also fundamentally affecting the original vision of the game they just spent 5 years making. Then that is just kinda stupid. No other product does that so idk why people feel so entitled to demand it from game devs especially when I've seen plenty of people with limitations figure out a way to play the same game that a bunch of healthy people are crying about not having enough "accessibility" options for.

    • @FenrirAmon
      @FenrirAmon 2 роки тому +16

      @@marbl3d45 No, because it's so stale gameplaywise. It basically only consists of "arenas" which are floded by enemies, you can carry only two weapons at a time, there are no different types of ammo, no passive upgrades, way less environmental possibilities to work with, no hacking to gain a tactical advantage etc. And from a subjective view: I found the whole concept of a collapsing/collasped city underwater with horror vibes and insane splicers way more enganging than the bright city above the clouds with less intimidating generic policemen and a sidekick.

    • @thesyndrome43
      @thesyndrome43 2 роки тому +15

      @@marbl3d45 Aside from the story not actually making much sense if you understand even a basic level of metaphysics and the repercussions of time travel, the game itself felt worse than the previous titles.
      There were less plasmids, and the powers that were in the game had less functionality than 2 and were also very badly balanced, some are useless while others are completely overpowered.
      The 2 weapon limit was frustrating because it constrained what you could use to be whatever you could find in the level, and it also didn't mesh well with the upgrade system, because you could upgrade a gun you like and then never find an enemy using it for another 3 levels. And this was only made worse by the addition of the alternate universe variants, which needed upgrading separately from the base universe weapons, but if you did then you wasted the upgrade because those weapons rarely show up outside of 1 sequence in the middle. On top of this ammo types were removed, yet again limiting gameplay.
      Where 2 tried to improve hacking by simplifying it but keeping the skill element, Infinite chose to remove any element of skill altogether by removing hacking and just implementing it into the possession plasmid, which feels less engaging and rewarding.
      All of that and I haven't even gotten into the NUMEROUS bits of cut content that we actually saw in gameplay videos that was then completely cut from the game, and seems worse off for it, or the fact that there is no satisfying combat encounter with the songbird, or the awkward clothing system feeling more confusing and random than the tonics they replaced.
      I just feel that it's inferior in every way compared to the previous titles, and this is especially embarrassing because Irrational didn't even make Bioshock 2 and it just makes me wish in retrospect that Bioshock had been given to 2K Marin to make a 3rd game

    With Bioshock's Harvest-Rescue morality, here's the issues I think it has:
    • I think having the Little Sister Gifts is actually a good idea on paper. This allows it to also be a game of delayed gratification, a mediocre reward now vs an awesome reward later. I think they needed to go a bit further with that, though, make you really miss that ADAM you're missing out on in the short term. Alternatively, make it so you get a lot less ADAM by rescuing little sisters, but you get those special plasmids.
    • Aesthetically, it's horrible as you point out, which means the player needs strong incentives to do it.
    • Killing Little Sisters is not something the game really forgives, which makes sense given how terrible the act is. However, what this means is that there's little chance to "dabble" in evil, there's no "Well, I can be evil just this once", which in turn means that there's no reason to reconsider your initial decision to rescue or harvest little sisters.

    I'll never forget 11 year old me when my brother had me play the demo. It took me a solid 5 minutes to build up the courage to enter the lighthouse. The atmosphere and the water just creeped the hell out of me. You walk in, the door closes, silence and darkness, and then the 50s Americana boots right up. I felt like such an idiot, but had no clue what to expect. My brother will never let me live that moment down hahaha.

    40:21 Wooh, strongly disagree there. Objectivism wouldn't have you harvesting Little Sisters. The core premise is 'not to live for the sake of others or have others live for the sake of you'. Little Sisters are still human and contridict the latter of this premise. The Little Sisters were Fontaine's legacy (with the help of Tenenbaum), he had no quarms with harvesting children for power and profit. Ryan, who has already been steadily betraying his principles, continues the trend by nationalising Fontaine Futuristics and furthering the Little Sister program. He ceased being an Objectivist long ago by this point. Choosing to save the Little Sisters from their servitude to Fontaine's conditioning is Objectively the correct choice.

    This game prompted me to read the source material; Atlas Shrugged. Excellent story all round. Over the years my opinion has changed from, Raptures downfall was due to Objectivism, to this is what happens when a man like Andrew Ryan betrays their principles or perhaps not betray but a constraint of being human. Certainly something fresh.

      Ayn Rand is largely discredited and mostly admired by corporate psycopaths and narcissists. I'm glad you enjoyed the story but be very careful assuming the principles contained therein are some kind of societal panacea. If everyone thought like Ayn Rand we'd likely be in Fallout in a decade or two never mind Rapture

    One thing that drives me mad about Bioshock: the audio design. Its absolutely horrendous. In this decaying and dead underwater city, it sounds like bloody midtown manhattan on a busy day. There is always splicer chatter/security bot buzzing/vending machine chatter/loudspeaker announcements/big daddies moaning and sometimes literally off these will be overlapping at the same time. There's almost never a moment of peace and quiet and its absolutely infuriating at times. Its so bad it turns me off ever wanting to replay it.

    First 2 bioshock titles are easily one of my favourite games of All Times. Such a great experience in rapture and a wonderfull World. An outstanding videogame. Unfortunately the 3. Game wasnt that great anymore. The plot Was To confusing, you could only carry 2 weapons at the same time (why allways These incredible stupid "realistic" Features in a si-fy inspired concept? Please developers, let us a have a weaopen wheel in a si-fy game. It is ok in a more realystic scenario like a 2. World war game. But why anywhere Else? This is stupid). However, the 3. Game had his highlights too.

    I liked the quest arrow, I don’t have time to truly learn every space In all the games I play, I do enough exploring myself to scratch that itch, honestly I’d not have bothered beating bioshock if it didn’t have that arrow to lean on. Just my opinion, I’m of the same mind with the compass in the new quake 2 remaster. When everything looks the same it quickly gets me frustrated.

    I'm personally thankful for the quest arrow.
    Yes its very ugly, and yes I technically could have done without it,
    but now that I have kids, I realise I simply don't have the patience for having my time wasted, even a little.
    It's fun to call play testers fucking morons 15 years after the fact,
    now that we know Rapture like the back of our hands, and have several mainstream AAA game worlds in the same vein,
    but at the time it was very different, and with few RPG elements, there was no benefit whatsoever to getting lost.
    All you have to do is miss a door or vent, and you could end up heading all the way back to the start of the level in vain.
    They also tell you where you can go if you *_don't_* want to progress in the story.
    If there's two doors, you take one, and it moves the story forward, then you missed whatever was behind the other one.
    Play tests are important, and when they tell you it's going to be a “disaster”, you better listen.

    My view has always been: Bioshock 1 play it for the great story and atmosphere , Bioshock 2 play it for the gameplay, voice acting and as a good example of a great sequel that doesn't just do what the first game did again, bioshock infinite... eh play it for the good art.. nothing else really , you will call the plot within the first half hour, gameplay is ok i guess, really does nothing better then the others and some things worse and is too easy. Oh and burial at sea is pretty enjoyable if only to wash the bad taste of infinite out of your mouth. One thing tho i never really liked about B1 is the lack of infighting, they should have made atleast one zone where you had two different factions of splicers fighting actively
