Nobody knew Jim Carrey's name until In Living Color in 1990. And he wasn't considered anything remotely famous until1994. Pure luck The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura all came out in 1994 and all became hits, so he went from "The funny white guy on In Living Color" to an A List celebrity with multiple hit movies within months.

Always liked this movie. Jim Carrey wasn't a famous actor at this time, by the way. He did appear in some movies in the 80s though. Once Bitten, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Earth Girls Are Easy. But his big break came a few years later when he showed up in the sketch show, In Living Color, in the early 90s. Then came Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994, and the rest is history.

Someone did mention it, but the car chase scene has some reference to another San Francisco Police Detective movie from 20 years earlier, 1968's Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen. The film is significant for its conventions and motifs used many movies since as well as further establishing Steve McQueen as "The King of Cool." Since you've finished The Dirty Harry movies, reacting to Bullitt should be one of your next film forays. :)

She was also in The Green Mile as the warden's wife, and played Kevin Costner's wife in The Untouchables. Also this movie was WAAAAY before Jim Carey got famous. In Living Color started in 1990 and is what launched his career. Then it was Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber that ALL came out in 1994 that solidified him as a leading comedic actor. He was just doing stand-up at this point, a few movies in Canada, but was a relative unknown in the states until he broke out on the Wayans Bros sketch comedy show In Living Color. Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb & Dumber all came out in 1994, the year he became HUGE!

Apparently Clint Eastwood had seen Jim Carrey's impression of him, where he turns his face into Eastwood's, and that led to Carrey being cast in this movie. Also 'Welcome To The Jungle' was huge in 1988, perfect tie-in to this movie. 8:46 Robbing restaurant patrons. And six years before Pulp Fiction. :P
From his back catalog of many, many hugely enjoyable Clint films, I'd highly recommend the action-thriller 'The Gauntlet' (1977), in it he plays a washed-up detective who is given the "easy" assignment of escorting one hostile witness/prisoner from one state to another. Great laughs from sardonic Clint, good tension / action and *fab* chemistry with his very unwilling to go witness/prisoner. ♥
Another Eastwood classic that gets very little love is the modern Western comedy-drama 'Bronco Billy' (1980), in this he plays against type, isn't a tough guy and is the boss of a small, travelling Wild West circus show that is facing hard times - though the circus troupe are more like family to him than employees. ♥

Clint had to be bribed by the studio to do this one. Seems to me Warner Bros. let him make “Bird” (a passion project of Eastwood’s) if he did another “Dirty Harry” movie. Apparently he got pestered for years after this to do another one but he said ever since when asked that he wouldn’t know what to do with Harry in his later years. “Gran Torino” reads as a Dirty Harry sequel, if you tilt your head and squint a bit.

Would alike to see you guys check out The Sting. Two other good films where Paul Newman plays the same role several years apart are The Hustler and Color of Money. Newman plays a young pool player/hustler who ends up in the same pool room one night as legendary pool player Minnesota Fats (played by Jackie Gleason). Years later Newman reprises the role of Fast Eddie Felson as an older guy who has quit playing and takes on the role of mentoring a brash young player/hustler played by Tom Cruise. Don't know if either of you are okay with Musical Comedy, but there is a great older film called Guys and Dolls. Great cast, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and many more. Y'all stay safe and well.

Speaking of which, a movie with her in it that I'm not sure I've seen anyone react to is "Easy A". Pretty hilarious movie. Kind of Emma Stone's breakout role, and Clarkson and Stanley Tucci are hilarious as maybe the GOAT movie parents.
