This was loosely based on the Zodiac. The only literal connection is the bus hijacking, since the killer had said he would do that. BTW- the kid that Scorpio holds hostage at the end was his own stepson.

This is a mixture - a mutt of a tale. This is strange 180-degree retelling of 1952's THE SNIPER, psycho killer-sniper in San Francisco, which has police interested in the psychology of the killer. DIRTY HARRY goes exactly the opposite and blends in SF's late '60s psycho-killer Zodiac.

    6:25 "Did he know, himself?"
So, Harry fired five rounds. When he approaches the bank robber, he pulls back the hammer, loading a live round, then he gently releases the hammer. When the robber says "I gots to know," Harry pulls the hammer back, loading a fired round, so, when he pulls the trigger, the hammer falls on the fired round.
28:24 "The search of the suspects quarters was illegal."
The year after this movie came out, the US Supreme Court established "Exigent Circumstances." So, if a cop is at a hotel for say. a theft call, but from an unrelated room he hears someone call for help, he/she doesn't have to wait for a warrant, they can just bust in. Once the person is rescued, the exigent circumstances end. If in the course of rescuing the person, the cop also notices five guns and bundles of crack, the cop must secure the room and wait for a warrant to get the guns and the crack.

Clint was born in SF and, to this day, has lived in Carmel (approx 70+ miles south of SF). The Dirty Harry franchise firmly made Eastwood a true Hollywood movie star/legend. The Zodiac Killer haunted SF & the Bay Area in the mid to late 60s (Zodiac was NEVER caught). Dirty Harry was released in theatres in 1971. I think it's safe to say that the Scorpio character was heavily influenced by the Zodiac Killer. Sales of Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum handgun skyrocketed immediately after this movie's release. It was so popular that Dirty Harry producers named it's 2nd film, "Magnum Force." I enjoyed watching this film with both of you. I hope you react to Magnum Force soon. Thank you!

The killer (Andrew Robinson) was handpicked for the role by the director and Eastwood himself after seeing him in a play. It was his film debut, and he did a fantastic job of playing a psychopath. Robinson has had a long career covering stage, screen, and television, but one of his most popular roles was playing Garak on my favorite Star Trek show, Deep Space Nine.

  • @carlgibson285

I really enjoyed your chat at the end. This movie does a great job of making you question where to draw the line when it comes to dealing with bad guys. The killer obviously deserved his fate, but you're also left with the impression that Harry would shoot pretty much every criminal he encountered if he was allowed to. The comparison to Judge Dredd was a good one because that character was originally conceived as a sci-fi Dirty Harry.

"Mercurochrome" was a mercury based antiseptic that was in common use back then. It was banned eventually because of the risk of possible mercury poisoning. I don't know about that because my mom slathered that stuff on every scrapped knee and elbow I came home with and I'm still here. You'll notice that during Harry's first "Do you feel lucky?" speech he is toying with the guy whereas when he delivers the same speech to Scorpio at the end his demeanor is angrier.

Harry’s frustration is not just with the law but also with the bureaucrats who interpreted the law. Certainly, Exigent circumstances (a girls life was in danger) existed to give him probable cause to enter the killers domicile therefore the rifle would be admissible evidence.

    Nice!
One of the best Action movies ever made!
John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and Frank Sinatra were considered for Dirty Harry, and Sinatra nearly broke his wrist when he fired the .44 Magnum handgun.
The movie was also filmed during the infamous Zodiac Killings that shocked the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960's and 1970's.

    • @Thane36425
      @Thane36425 7 місяців тому

In one of the movies, Harry actually says that he uses a lighter load to manage recoil better. Maybe they should have tried that with Sinatra. Then again, he would not have been believable.

    • @badGamr
      @badGamr 7 місяців тому

Sinatra broke his wrist in the film The Manchurian Candidate during the kitchen fight scene. It was after that he determined he could not shoot that Smith and Wesson model 29 .44 magnum. Had his wrist not been broken, the film Dirty Harry would have been a very different film as Eastwood insisted on bring Director Don Seagal over from Universal to direct.

The movie world is lucky, too... all anyone has to do is watch John Wayne in either 1974's McQ or his 1975 BRANNIGAN film to see how an out-of-shape actor performs when cast in a character 20-30 years younger. Ugh.

    • @RoSaWa386-33
      @RoSaWa386-33 7 місяців тому

And Frank Sinatra had 3 tries at 'modern detective' - the original TONY ROME (1967 set in Miami) and a year later with Raquel Welch in 1970's LADY IN CEMENT. In 1980, he tried again with the hoped-for book-movie series, THE FIRST DEADLY SIN. These are disappointing entries into the detective genre but audiences still loved the genre: they had Steve McQueen's BULLITT, Gene Hackman's excellent THE FRENCH CONNECTION and Pacino's SERPICO. It had to be disappointing to Sinatra because he'd had a relative hit with a late '40s radio show he owned and developed, ROCKY FORTUNE, about a drifter rescuing damsels in distress in his weekly 30-min show.

It should come as no surprise to learn that Andrew Robinson is by all accounts a lovely, sweet, gentle person - as far removed from his role as Scorpio as it is possible to be. He had trouble being awful to the kids on the school bus and in the scene with the bruiser where he has to call him a ‘black son of a bitch.’ He’s had a considerable career on television and on stage - he had a recurring role on one or more of the ‘Star Trek’ shows among many other things. Clint saw him on stage in New York and lobbied for him to play in this movie - the director and producers took some convincing that such an angelic-looking person would make an effective killer for the movie, but Clint clearly saw something in him that nobody else did. 😊

Since you're just getting to know a "young" Clint Eastwood, let me take you back to 1969. It's much more lighthearted and fun (way different than what you expect from Eastwood) and also stars another actor who was notorious for playing heavies, Lee Marvin (although brilliant in comedies as well, probably best remembered as a heavy in the John Wayne classic westerns "The Comancheros" 1961 and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" 1962).
The movie is "Paint Your Wagon". It's not only different to see these two incredible actors in something other than a hard core drama, it's also a musical starring two men who are definitely not known for their lovely singing voices 😳.
Even if you decide not to use it on the channel, you'll be glad you watched it at least once. You may even recognize some of the songs from the soundtrack as they were well known at the time from both the movie and the hit Broadway show (289 shows opening November 12, 1951, and closed on July 19, 1952).

Harry was a character that was a response to how people saw the system failing and falling apart in those days. People getting away with crimes and the cops having their hands tied and not being able to do anything about it. When Dirty Harry came out audiences of the time were in tune with the idea that finally the criminals weren't "getting away with it". I was just a kid but I remember the adult back then talking about it.

In DIRTY HARRY, the Suicide Jumper is played by Gregory Walcott, and you'll see him playing more Clint films, especially in 1975's THE EIGER SANCTION.

There are sequels to this movie and the the best is Sudden Impact, in my opinion with the quote, go ahead, make my day. In the daytime restaurant or cafe.
It's genius how this pulled this off.

You would probably enjoy another Clint Eastwood cop movie called Tightrope. In that movie Clint's character is a cop investigating a serial killer and he realises to his discomfort that he has personality traits similar to the killer. It's a psychological thriller.

I spent almost 20 years living in San Francisco. For many of those years, I lived within walking distance of Kezar Stadium - where Harry caught the Killer. It's where the 49ers played before they built Candlestick. By the time that I moved to SF, they'd torn down much of the stadium seating. But... It's where most of the high schools in the city still hold their football games.

Brilliant reaction, if you enjoyed the journey of Harry's disillusionment with the judicial system you have to watch Magnum force, Harry's second outing in the series, which takes another view on the subject of law vs justice. Also for young Clint a movie that is a must watch is High Plains Drifter, iconic.

Mercurochrome was Neosporin before that became a thing, it was a red liquid used to disinfect wounds, but it was red, so it always seemed counter productive on wounds IMO. They still make the stuff as I just looked it up, as it was everywhere in the 70's & 80's, but but over time it just faded out of use, but it was in everyone's medicine cabinets back then.

Casablanca is very good. For some other true classics I would suggest All About Eve with Bette Davis. Superb writing in that one. Perhaps Rear Window a Hitchcock murder mystery. A classic comedy would be The Philadelphia Story with Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn.

This movie was to be a one off. But it was so well made it became the 3rd highest grossing movie of 1971 (36 million) its listed as one of the top 100 movies.
Now to understand this movie completely. Its fiomed in 1971. The Miranda Rights case was decided in 1966. So part of this movie is about the effects of that coming into effect and the effects it carried with it.

Suggestions for old movies to watch:
Where Eagles Dare (Clint Eastwood, Richard Burton)
Paint Your Wagon (Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin)
The Big Red One (Lee Marvin, Luke Skywalker; Saving Private Ryan before Saving Private Ryan)
Von Ryan's Express (Frank Sinatra; one of my secret favorites. )
The Enemy Below (Robert Mitchum, Curd Yurgens, the movie the Star Trek episode was based upon)
The African Queen (Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn; a romance for ordinary people)
The Naked Jungle (Charlton Heston, the breath-taking, heart-stopping Eleanor Parker)
Heaven Knows Mr Allison (Robert Mitchum, Debra Kerr)
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (Steve Martin, Rachel Ward, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck, Vincent Price, etc etc etc)
    Chinatown (Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway)
Three Days of the Condor (Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway)
The Apartment (Jack Lemon, Shirley McClain)
L.A. Confidential (Russel Crow, Guy Pierce, Kevin Spacey)
    Sahara (Humphrey Bogart)
    Sahara (Jim Belushi)
    (both versions are great)
Stalag 17 (William Holden, Peter Graves (Capt Oveur, "Airplane!"))
My Man Godfrey (Dick Powell, Carol Lombard)
Hanover Street (Harrison Ford, Lesley-Ann Downs, and Christopher Plummer as the man with a wet coat)
The Eagle Has Landed (Michael Caine (Alfred, in the Dark Knight), Donald Sutherland)
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002; Jim Caviziel, Guy Pierce and Henry Cavill (yes, Superman) )

The pond doesn't exist anymore. The location of the shootout at the quarry is Larkspur, Calif., and it's been developed into a residential area and a lot of business/retail properties. During the course of development in the 80s the pond was drained. That star, if it was really thrown into the water, is probably underground now or someone found it long ago and didn't know of its significance.
