One of the best and most underrated heist movies ever made, when you hear the opening monologue the second time and figure out what the title means, it hits you like a brick
Wife and I saw this in the theaters, when the hammer dropped on what was in Case's deposit box, there was one dude in the theater going: "Nah man, Captain Von Trapp dealing with Nazis?!" Howling. We were laughing our asses off.
Top tier Spike Lee film. Underrated film is 25th Hour with Edward Norton and an amazing supporting cast. One of the best monologues ever in there as well.
From what I remember, Denzel was offered the part of Dalton the Bank Robber but didn't like the idea of acting underneath a mask. Which is interesting because I think Clive Owen's best acting in the movie is while he's in his bank robber outfit with the scarf or whatever over his mouth and the sunglasses.
P.S. Panic Room is awesome! An underrated David Fincher movie, and only considered mid-tier because he has so many other exceptional films, but it’s really darn taut!
@@stsolomon618yes they are, and I couldn't be more excited, my favorite Kurosawa movie being remade by Spike Lee with Denzel in the Toshiro Mifune role, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt after Oldboy and can't wait!

This movies references two heist movies from the 70s that you should watch: DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) and THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (1974, NOT the 2009 version). DOG DAY AFTERNOON was directed by Sidney Lumet (12 ANGRY MEN) and stars Al Pacino & John Cazale (Michael & Fredo Corleone). THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE stars Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw.
My parents watched this rhis and they loved it, and it has a lot of crazy twists and turns throughout that will make you watch it again and again to figure out what really happened.
I know what happened, after seeing it once. He hid in the walls. He's the Inside Man..... 😅🤭 Idk, I thought this movie was kinda dumb and confusing. Bloated. With good acting, no doubt. Good setpieces, yes.... but why though? Because he COULD??? Come tf on.....😔🙈
It's baffling how little of a cultural imprint this film has had, given it's quality. So few channels have reacted to it, I've been flabbergasted why. So fun! Edit: And the fact that La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) basically stole the concept full cloth for its setup just makes it that much more obvious that this is a formula for success.
The construction worker who's ex wife is Albanian is Spike Lee's good friend. If you ever watch a Knicks game at the Garden they are usually there together.
I love the bits where Denzel asks the various interviewees 'so did you rob the place then?', they laugh nervously and then he asks again 'no but did you though?' and they look like they are going to faint from stress. He's so charismatic it's almost irritating. Edit: oh, and Chewitel is great here too, in a relatively early role.
One of my favorite heist movies I actually know someone who did an inside bank robbery. They worked there and knew the cameras were broken so when cash was brought in before it could be counted, they took the top layer of the stacks and rearranged it, and got away with it.
Spike Lee...master of the dolly shot. 21:00 - The shot on of Densel on the camera dolly with everyone else in the background was an amazing setup. A perfect way to introduce shock, anger, and being outside oneself. Incredibly under noticed in this movie, and I've never seen anyone else do something similar. Also if you notice at 3:02 Spike Lee also did some very great double dolly shots to get that background fade in.
@@disconnexionsdotcom yeah the floating dolly shots are amazing too. I didn't like Spike Lee's earlier work. It wasn't until Malcolm X with Denzel Washington and this movie that I was in. Please react to Malcolm X even if you don't get it in by black history month. Denzel's depiction of him is uncanny. And I often cite it as the best acting performance I've ever seen.
This movie is awesome. One of the great 2000s movies. Particularly great to me is how Clive Owen goes toe to toe with Denzel (who at this time was probably one of the biggest and most popular movie stars). I don’t know many actors that could stare down DW and really match him face to face like that. Very awesome.
Decades ago in the UK a friend brother built up a considerable collection of signs including street names from various cities and signs from public buildings, brass name plates etc. How he did it was simple. He owned a white van, a set of white overalls, a ladder and some tools and he simply drove up to his target and took it down. If asked he was told it was going for cleaning or replacement. Acting co0mpletely confidently and like it's his job he was never caught.

I first saw this on my first trip to Ireland - at a cinema on O'Connell Street in Central Dublin. It made an impression! Despite being overwhelmed by new experiences, the memory of this movie stuck with me.
Two different details:- 1) My personal theory for the robbers is that they were all relatives of the family killed in WW2. 2) The close family members of you-know-who are all members of the royal family of Saudi Arabia. They suffered a few social problems after 2001, but nothing more. This was a HOA negotiation.
I've been saying that for YEARS since this came out. That the robbery crew is either related to the family that the bank owner gave up to the Nazis, or very close to someone related to the Jewish family, & they exacted their revenge on him.
Did anyone notice how sus the middle finger with the ring appeared in the frame and how it disappeared again? It's almost like it was CGI. Also, Peter Hammond, the guy who was beaten for hiding his cell, was one of the Greasers from Grease 2. I don't remember his real name.

It was "bin Laden's nephew", which is kinda hilarious if you know that apparently, mosta bin Laden's family are actually cool, and were ashamed of and disowned him (because of 9/11, al Qaeda, and his general extremism). You should check out comedian Russell Peters' set, Adventures in Saudi Arabia. (The movie *might've* been trying to refer to a guy everyone apparently thought was Osama bin Laden's nephew, but turned out to actually be his son, and one of the few of the bin Laden family who hadn't disowned his dad.)
Well you do know that bin laden worked for the cia he was trained and lived in USA and his family were in business with the bush family even after the attacks We all know he didn’t do it he was the patsy
21:00 That's the classic Spike Lee "actor riding the dolly" shot. Denzel did this at least once before, at the end of Malcolm X. Spike may have taken the technique from Melvin Van Peebles' The Story of a Three-Day Pass.
Remember when Case was telling the story of the Jewish couple? The diamond dealer who ask Dalton at the end "Where's the ring?" Those were his parents.
Great reaction! As usual! A Denzel film I must recommend: *Deja Vu* (2006) OTHER FILMS TO SEE: ● *Spy Game* (2001) with *Brad Pitt* and *Robert Redford.* ● *The Mexican* (2001), starring _Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts_ and _James Gandolfini._ ● *_The Fisher King_* (1991) Dir. by Terry Gilliam, with _Robin Williams_ & _Jeff Bridges._ ● *_Silverado_* (1985). This movie has one big flaw. The woman who was "gifted" shall we say. There were only two women who fit that description, and one of them was part of the crew. The cops wouldn't just leave that kind of information. It was a mistake for her to be a part of the crew.
One of Spike's best (and most mainstream) film that shows the influence of the original Taking of Pelham 123 (the other being Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs). What I loved was you can look at each main character as either protagonist or antagonist. Some other cool stuff: the opening song is from Dil Se, a great and just as weird Bollywood film; the overhead shot of the cops setting up the the perimeter was like watching a spider web being built in time lapse; of course, the inside man is the Jewish diamond dealer. Fun and thoughtful film at the same time.
The pizza ordered for the hostages is from Sal’s Famous Pizzeria….this is a shop from another spike lee movie “do the right thing”. Both movies share the same universe.😂😂
This film makes no sense. There's too many major flaws. The chief tells the detective to drop the case as if no crime has happened. Holding people to hostage is a crime... even if they're later released and nothing (apparently) is stolen. Not to mention one of the employers gets seriously thumped for hiding his phone. Also they have a major lead - with only two women 'stacked' they only need follow these two... for a short while. They know one of them is part of the gang. Also, I cannot believe that no one would notice the store room being smaller. Not only do they have a false wall, but the two side walls would have to be adjusted so that the shelving on those ends at the new wall and that would also mean adjusting what was stocked there and at the beginning the shelves look full, so where's the boxes and stock get moved? They cut into a pipe to give him a toilet.. so the pipe doesn't just burst and what about when water comes down from whereever it doesn't spill out? They would have been better carting a small chemical toilet in (one used in campers) and using that. How is it they can use a speech recording of Enver Hoxha ? Didn't anyone applaud him during his speech? Surely the cops would wonder why is this one person speaking in a monotone and monologue for several hours. People guessing Albanian sounded "Russian" have obviously never heard either - it's like saying Irish sounds like German
Malcolm X (1992)! It's more Denzel and Spike Lee; Denzel's best performance in Lee's best movie Also, the song that plays over the opening credits is from a Bollywood romantic musical political thriller called Dil Se (1998) which is also a great film
I'm so glad you guys did this movie. This is such a fun watch and Clive Owen and Denzel are fantastic. A similar style movie is Man On A Ledge with Sam Worthington (Avatar) I also have to throw in my usual recommendations of Kelly's Heroes and Sushi Girl I'm not a Patreon (for now) so those won't get put on your lists but maybe some day.

Clive jus talked about this recently, he made sure that spike lee would show his face in the movie and didn't want to wear the mask the whole movie.
If Denzel had played Dalton, he would have insisted the robber get caught.
Quiet as kept, Denzel needs to show his face to make his roles work. That makes it easier to play the same character in every movie.

This movie has one big flaw. The woman who was "gifted" shall we say. There were only two women who fit that description, and one of them was part of the crew. The cops wouldn't just leave that kind of information. It was a mistake for her to be a part of the crew.
Fantastic movie, so overlooked. Nice to see some reactors on it
Ooh, speaking of negotiator, watch The Negotiator 1998.
One of my favorite Denzel movies. Great subject and great actors and director Spike Lee
Definitely would love to see your reaction to Virtuosity with Denzel and Russell Crowe 😂
They were in American Gangster together too
You have to go back to the St. Elsewhere days to see Denzel with a mustache.
Something tells me that you must be *new* to the game of *Kansas City Shuffle.*
If ya know, ya know.
Your Jodie Foster playlist should take you into True Detective Season 4. (Season 1 and 4 are the ones worth watching, 3 is okay but 2 was not good)
Malcolm X (1992)! It's more Denzel and Spike Lee; Denzel's best performance in Lee's best movie
Also, the song that plays over the opening credits is from a Bollywood romantic musical political thriller called Dil Se (1998) which is also a great film
I rewatch this movie a lot!!
I'm so glad you guys did this movie. This is such a fun watch and Clive Owen and Denzel are fantastic.
A similar style movie is Man On A Ledge with Sam Worthington (Avatar)
I also have to throw in my usual recommendations of Kelly's Heroes and Sushi Girl
I'm not a Patreon (for now) so those won't get put on your lists but maybe some day.
You gotta watch another great Denzel movie of the same genre, Deja Vu, highly recommend it
