Wish I would've seen this earlier. Bought TWO!!! No regrets though. That Tanto, is a WHOLE LOTTA KNIFE!!!
What freedom do you mean? I think those wars were on behalf of little hat wearers.
@@coolboy5428 You mean smurfs?
@@willd6515 lol, smurfs have big hats
Always like the surprize when U purchase fm tootsie pop's to beanie etc Nice Touch !! ;)
I got a Kobun, had it over 10 years, its had hard use and still performs and looks superb, so god knows how good this recon tanto is being several steps up.
Same here I've done some crazy stuff to my Kobun. The Recon Tanto probably is indestructible.
carried the same recon tanto my entire time as active duty and it was perfection
Re how the "Tantos" looks ,this is not how they ever looked in History. It is a modern take and nears no resemblance to the museum pieces.
@@richardallan455 the term tanto literally just means short sword or short blade in Japanese
@@richardallan455 Its not designed to be a replica or reproduction, its just a hard working knife in the style of.
I own the SK5 version. When i show my friends some of my knifes they always take a pause and admire the recon tanto for it's beauty and potential.
The SK5 is heat treated hard and it don't chip easily. Tough steel. Best bang for the buck.
If only sk5 held up to cardboard better gonna get the San mai version maybe I wont have to sharpen it as much
@@brandonpausta2206 yea, not for abrasive stuff like cardboard. For cutting cardboard , i always use s35vn cold steel code 4, with toothy edge at 600 grits. It's faster to be sharpen with a diamond plate.
@@brandonpausta2206 i also have the san mai, it's VG10 core is not that much better. What i noticed, it is easier to get micro chipping on the edge. More brittle, almost the same as AUS10. Better go with s35vn or better, for cutting cardboard. Lionsteel use M390, which was tested and outperforming all the steel i mentioned before.
@@nafis6668my microtech combat troodon has m390 thing cost me $500.0 this thread talks about the sk5 being sufficient over the San Mai vg10 steel
Lynn is such a nice guy to meet and he really cares about others especially those serving in our military.
Met him at a gun show twice he's good people I showed him all my family caries his knives we all had our older gen cold steel knives and he gave me and my sons great deals on new cold steel knives
I have several of these but my favorite one is the one I inherited from my best friend when he passed. He was a Samurai FREAK and the Tanto from Cold Steel was his EDC. It brings back memories. He had the sheath sewn into his inside jacket and every once in awhile he would randomly draw and throw it into a tree with a satisfying "THUNK".... then he would smile. I'll never get rid of any of them, but that one is precious.
Now I need a Nodachi to complete my Cold Steel dreams. 🤣🤣🤣
I'm pretty sure the assassin guy in Elysium had one of these. I love the feeling of the handle with the lack of a back hilt. I can put my thumb right on the thick spine. So glad I got one for Christmas 2 years ago. Very chunky.
Great content ! Hope you guys follow through & keep these "Deadliest Weapons" episodes flowing !! They are packed with information!
Unfortunately we are being misled the Tantos from Japan's past do not look like this at all.
@@richardallan455 Everyone knows that Lynn Thompson marketing the "Americanized" Tanto.. and traditional Japanese Tanto blades only share the same curve.. without the aggressive secondary edge. Nothing is misleading.. even the Japanese Tanto changed shape over time, before Lynn made his own "Americanized" version in the 80's. It's still a Tanto. No doubt about it. He's not calling it a Scottish Dirk or a Philippine Balisong. He took a traditional Japanese Tanto design & re-engineered it in the 80's.. almost single handed bringing that type of blade to homes across the country. Not sure what you think is misleading... he didn't claim to directly reproduce a traditional Japanese Tanto. In fact they both did the opposite & told viewers where the inspiration came from. Technically speaking.. the traditional Japanese tanto blades look like spear points.. you really have to look hard to spot the upswept, secondary edge. So I really don't know what you are on about dude.
I've had a recon tanto for over twenty years, it's the absolute best. I carry one of my cold steel tanto blade knives every day.
Yeah, I agree completely. I've had a Carbon V Recon Tanto since about 95, and it will outlive me, I'm sure. It's held up to the last 28 years better than I have 🤣
Keep up the deadliest weapons series! Love all the cold steels 💪🏼
carried the same recon tanto for 6 years and multiple rotations. Best knife I ever bought.
The Recon Tanto and the SRK are modern classics of knife design. I love them both, cheap, wicked sharp, and robust.
Great to see Lynn again !
I wanna say I had the recon tanto in Iraq, back in 05. If not it was very similar. Loved the hell out of that thing. Unfortunately it was in a footlocker with other knives and swords that mysteriously went missing when the movers unloaded my stuff after I got out
...good to see Lynn...he can't stay away from Cold Steel and their blades...
It's a classic. Should be in all fixed knife combat collections.
good afternoon...I never thought that I would write to you. I’ve been using knives for about 20 years... but it so happened that I didn’t use your knives... after Glocks and Mora knives it’s difficult to have favorites... but recently I took the plunge and ordered a recon tanto (of course, under the influence of Joe x)... Guys, I'm shocked (the execution,..how it fits in the hand, the thoughtfulness of the sheath and its quality)...you really know how to make a knife...you have every right to be the first in knife brands. Good luck
I own 2 cold steel recon tanto and I put one through brutal tasks and it lived up to its name and I got a second as a back up. I just love cold steel blades as they are affordable and just great quality
I definitely agree about the important role that daggers filled, and that they probably dispatched more people on the battlefield than the sword. However, I wouldn't just say that about Japan, I would say that that was the case across the board, including Medieval Europe, where the armor was even more advanced than that of the Japanese.
The main reason medieval armor and weapons became more advance was because Japan's land is not as rich in metals as europe. This is why the katana was made to a certain size and samurai armor is a mix of metals and wood
@@shoveledsoul there is certainly no wood in or on Japanese armour at the time period in which a samurai would exist
@@ajayghale4306 I thought bamboo would be used in samurai armor? But I guess I could be wrong though still it was a mix of leathers and metal.
@@ajayghale4306 i mean some of the decorative crest on top of the helmet was sometimes made of wood
I love the evolution of Stickman. The blackthorn stick at the end is the cherry on top. * *chef's kiss* *
This is the sort of s**t that makes me love Cold Steel.
Ultimate knife. I love Cold Steel American Legacy and approach. Hooah! 🔥 ⚔️❤
I just purchased one in SK-5 steel and this video drops? 😍😍😍 I love Cold Steel!
I bought my Recon Tanto way over 20 years ago back when they were made in the USA and out of Carbon V.
I've been buying Cold Steel every since. Axes, tomahawks, machetes, spears, fix blades, folders and several shovels.
It's definitely the best deal in hard use blades.
Man that blade looks nice and smooth and INCREDIBLY SHARP
Love All Cold Steel.
I had an Urban skinner and a Tanto during Desert shield.
Hey, I love your knives, keep working 👍
I carried the original recon tanto with brass pommel and guard while in the 82nd Airborne loved it, lost that one when a cop picked me up hitchhiking, and I had to ditch it before getting in the front seat for a ride home, went back to pick it up the next day and it was gone, found it on the self at Jim's pawn shop where they wanted TWO TIMES what I paid for it. Skip forward to Iraq and got another original .... LOVE this bomb proof blade!
My 2 are still going strong after all these years it really is a great knife 👍🏻
Theres Old Cold Steel, then theres FRESH Cold Steel, FRESH TANTO so cool!
I've owned the Recon tanto with black coating since 2004. I bought it before I deployed to Iraq and couldn't have been happier with it's overall looks and performance. I still own this knife to this day and won't ever sell it.
Give you $50? Lol
Tanto was the Samurai's spiritual go to weapon. The sword chooses the man
But the tanto is soul of the Samurai.
Misleading description from Cold Steel the Tanto never ever looked like their design ,this is made up on a drawing board by a Graphic Artist, sorry to dash your memory but the correct information is out there.
Cold Steel has some good models for sure. Keep up the great work! 🗡👍🇺🇸
🇹🇼 knife 🇺🇸 😁😁
Old Fav of mine.
Recon Tanto with a black coating makes more sense for war. So does the SRK, which just screams function, and not "look at my old Japanese style knife"
I carried an American Lawman in Iraq. A good folding knife with a sturdy lock mechanism that can all be worked one handed is a really good idea for someone at war.
Ya but folding knives will never be as effective in a role a fixed blade is designed for. I've seen all kinds of locking mechanisms break or fail, especially in Afghanistan. I carried a recon tanto as my regular fixed blade on my vest, and had a folding Benchmade that stayed on my person
I don't have a Recon Tanto, but a Master Tanto in CPM 3 V and a few Fontaine Throwers... best knifes buy ever
Definitely one of the best fixed blades on the market.
I have a La Fontain throwing Bowie knife and I love it. It's a Beast.
Bought my first cold steel product. Tried mini leatherneck tanto. The one in the video is so nice!
...got one...love it...
I have the VG 1 and SK5 version love it very much thanks Cold Steel ,from the Philippines.❤
Which one would you say is better though ?
They are booth bomb proof I carry them only for self defense try the SK5 version it's more budget friendly
I have a GI Tanto. It's also a nice gift, and not expensive at all. The other Cold Steel blades I have are the Katana Machete and Kukri Plus. All budget models, but they make me smile.
Cold Steel is my favorite knife company. That is all i own. Their American Tanto Point is my favorite knife point. And while typing this comment, I have my Voyager XL Tanto with me right now. But I do own a Recon Tanto San Mai 3 that was made in Japan, which is my favorite knife of all in my stockpile. I also own other American Tanto Point blades (Kobun, Voyager Large Tanto, Voyager XL Tanto, SR1 Lite Tanto, Tanto Machete, Katana Machete (24 inch version), and Tactical Katana Machete. Even though the Japanese chokuto, a 6th century sword, has this distinctive tip first, Lynn Thompson and company brought this design back to the modern world. Cold Steel rerevolutionize the knife world with it, and became very successful. Thank you very much!
Agree""I have been wearing a Cold Steel Master Tanto Knife USA Seki Japan Hattori San Mai since 1980. if there's one knife I can rely on 100% it's Cold Steel
Recon tanto is a tank of a knife, just like the recon 1 folders, love it
My favorite knife!
I love Lynn!
😎
Now I must see watch comparison videos for Recon & Warcraft!
I have owned thr cheaper black coating Recon Tanto for some 25 years. Always sharpand wicked. Light and able to change directions and reverse slash easily. I have had it for so long I wore out the nylon sheath and called to uy a kydex sheath. I strap it to the side of one of my bug out bags on the molle loops. I have it on one if my smaller bags that also carries my Estwing tomahawk on thr other side. It goes with me along my a 1911 .45 when I mosy about in he hills or in unfamiliar areas.
I personally like the master tanto in san-mai lll.. with the skull crushing pummel
The Recon Tanto was the first Cold Steel knife I ever bought in 1995. I have over 50 of your items and I've purchased almost that many for friends and family on Christmas and birthdays. Love you guys. Where can I send ideas for new stuff?
@@JB-yb4we I'm kinda unemployed right now cuz covid. And they used to have summer and Christmas sales.
@@Ogrematic are you working again uncle? My birthday is coming up! Just had another baby so I can’t buy myself a gift this year. I’m sure Auntie matic would be ok with a charitable deed for your favorite nephew from Texas! 😂
Very beautiful
I have a Carbon V that I got at a gun show for 60 bucks. Thanks for revisiting!
Will you please make a tactical sword with the amazing handles that your knives have?
Cold Steel's Tactical Katana Machete perhaps?
@@davidmuth4571 not the same as their knife handles man. If you've held the leatherneck or trailmaster...
@@ArfooHuroo The plastic grip on the katana is held on with a couple pins, and a new handle of one's own could be a fun project. I have similar plans for a GI Tanto.
Yeah like a taipan but sized up, maybe 18 inches long
Awesome!!! More vids!!!
I just keep coming back to this video. My obsession with the Tanto knows no bounds. I have the SK5 version but I just have to get this one.
Saw on your channel your response to getting it.
@@I-OT-AVAVA-OT-HA-VAYA was pumped haha
How's the sk-5 hold up as far as utilitarian and Chip resistance
@@c.h.u.d I personally have grown to not be the biggest fan of these, unfortunately. I really do hate to say that because I think they are awesome looking but these over molded handles get loose pretty easily and my SK5 has done a good bit of chipping.
@@411Outdoors thx for the info .I'm still deciding on picking one up
Yeah it's my dream knife..I have a roach belly and I think it's the best design ever made for edc defence..this one I'd love to try
Mega Cool Cold Steel Recon Tanto Knife
Bring back the recon 1 tanto xl folding knife
Love coldsteel
I have this in the Carbon V metal with the black coating. It is a work of wonder and an amazing cutter. After researching the Carbon V metal I was very impressed since it is the same metal my granddaddy called Queen's Steel. I recently purchased another in SK5 metal which slices through cardboard three layers thick with no stalling in the light sweep.
The big one I have is the Magnum Tanto II in Sai Mai steel. It is a beautiful work of art with the leather sheath. I probably have too many CS knives and blades, but love them.
The carbonV version is cool. I suppose you didn't ordered it the last week from amazon...
@@bapro1715 Nope. I purchased it the year it came out. I saw it at a gun show and bought it. It was the last the dealer had of them. I was lucky to get it for the $150 I paid.
I have one of the original ones has to be close to 40 years old still hold a Great edge
i have the carbon5 and the sk5 very nice knives
This video has EVERYTHING! Lynne, T rocking out at 1:54, and some of the best steel around!
I use to absolutely hate the American Style Tanto but after purchasing a Recon Tanto I can say it has grown on me. It may not be pretty to look at, but it's very functional. It's a nasty little "stabby boi".
Love lyn Thompson
Just ordered the black one
It’s been my edc for almost four years
Legend.
LOVE MY RECON TANTO
It's a good knife
I hope it can be easily purchased in Japan as well.
While I agree recon tanto is an excellent defensive knife.. I personally prefer the master tanto in San -mai lll
I also really like the srk in San Mai lll... That's just my preference.. camping in the woods with my three little kids years ago in the 90s the master tanto was always on my side and next to me in the tent at night
Could you guys make comparative videos?
For instance: kukri, bowie, tanto, dagger (all roughly same size)
Or your various machetes?
That's a fantastickal idea!
I've got two, the 7" in San Mai III is my favorite.
I love tanto tips alot better than drop point or spear point tip blades. I like straight edges over serrated due to being easier to Sharpen
Would love to get my hand on a Recon Scout.
I love the knife, I have it twice... :-)
Lynn is the Chris Farley of Cutlery.
I love all of my Cold Steel tools 😉👍🏻
This comment should be so much higher 👌🤣
Sweet!
It's a Beast for sure
Best knife I've ever owned. Legend.
I had the AUS8 version it was a beast..
Cold Steel knives are great 👍🏽
Reminds me of the Warcraft tanto also made by CS.
Well, what about that sweater where can we get that to go with the recon?
That was one of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen !
Upper Rear corner on that handle could be rounded more for reverse grip use.
I carried this knife on 2 deployments in Afghanistan. I love it
I guaranasstee ya!
I never owned this weapon but I will vouch for it. If I had this I will bring this knife to a every combat.
There should be a cold steel merchandise spot on the website, so people can purchase hoodies and t shirts.
Hard to beat CS, great blades at great prices
I have own 2 of these, Carbon ones, purchase when they first came out. Served me well as a Tanker! Gave one to my offspring. This and the Glock knifes, should be with combat soldiers gear, in my lowly opinion! Thanks Cold Steel!!
thanks for your service brother
I have the kobun serated love it
got the new san mai 12 inch version 😁😎
Bought one years ago looks as good now as when I bought it
use it 🤣
Thanks Luke. That reminds me, kids dont do drugs
I have a Cold Steel folding knife tanto blade with Gunsite logo and gunsite word engraved on blade, made in Japan also engraved on blade. I have this knive going on about 15 plus years.
