Fun fact:
Brian May dreamed the melody of this song and woke up to write it!. In his dream, he envisioned a prophet that was sent to inform the world that the end was coming. Hence the title, “The Prophet’s Song”. This was truly a masterpiece!!!
Brian May is not only a musical genius, he also has his PhD in Astrophysics specializing in star dust. He is Dr. Brian May!
Ya he was a big fan of Sir Patrick Moore too and bought his house so that he was financially secure for his final years, always seems like such a great guy in interviews.

Timeless Queen!! This song is more than 40 years old and still relevant.
If you mean lyrically relevant, not at all. It's pretty much about a Noah-like song in which a Prophet warns of a storm that will bring a terrible flood. Don't really see anything that's relevant to today. If you mean musically, then yeah, but I don't think the word "Relevant" is correct.

That echo effect was made in a very interesting manner, back when reel-to-reel taping was standard. : they literally rigged thing up across the room, where the tape ran through one machine to play, then stretched across the spacing to the next machine, then the next... I believe a total of 3 (maybe 4) reel-to-reel players were jury-rigged in this manner and THAT result in turn recorded.
Every moment of the way, they watched this will held breath, praying the tape wouldn’t snag, tangle, or break. Totally innovative for the time!
Not forgetting of course that Freddie had to be pitch perfect for the delays to come back in harmony with what he's singing at the time.
Not to mention that the effect is basically a 4-part cannon. GENIUS.

Brian got the inspiration for this song in a dream. His song writing often arises spontaneously in him and it's almost like a 'drive' or a 'haunting' - he's said it won't leave him alone! Home stereo just became widely available & affordable in the late 60's. Queen, especially, experimented with ways of taking advantage of it.Thanks!
Absolutely right - he had a dream and it nearly forced him to write this masterpiece. The warning is still relevant today, maybe even more so. Brian is very simply a blessing to us all, one of the kindest people on the planet.
Dude, thank you so much for doing this and to whoever prompted you to check it. I heard this as a kid and rediscovered it years later - same album as Bohemian Rhapsody which casts a huge shadow, but the Prophet's Song is a gem in its own right and deserves to be promoted and remembered in its own right. Exactly!! Huge speakers in those days. The best way to listen to music. Total body surround sound!! Pink Floyd was great to listen to this way as well. And Zeppelin. Well, I could go on and on 😅

Haven't read all comments, so I'm sorry if it's a repeat: The very last notes you hear lead right into "Love of my life" (written by Freddie Mercury). On the album, it's not the guitar that takes that song away, so it switches over to piano. But those very last guitar notes are exactly how Brian always starts Love of my life when they're playing it live.
Roy Thomas Baker added regarding Mercury's vocal: "He starts off singing in the center, and then the first delay starts to the left, then the second delay goes to the right, then he can sing and make 3-part harmonies just by harmonizing with himself as it comes back around into his headphones.
The delay was done by using two stereo Studer machines - they were still running the tape from one reel to the other the way you'd normally run a tape machine, whereas you run it from one reel through and then off the machine and then straight to a different machine, and then playing back on a different machine, so the tape would actually be laying across the room. There were a few chairs and lamps and coat hooks around that we hooked it over until we ended up with the right delay. He had to perform it live, so it's being performed live with the delays in his headphones and he could hear it so he could sing along with it and then harmonize with the vocals when it came back to him."

I had a copy of "A Night At The Opera" back in 1975 the same week it was released. So it's been 45 years since this song blew open my mind through a set of high-end headphones. And watching your reaction to it brought that memory back to me. The early 1970s had an explosion of epic music that holds up decades later.

Yes, we had headphones in the '70's 😂 They were invented in the early 1900's. It was quite common throughout the '70's for songs to pan left and right. Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush and many others did it
Love all things Brian May. He’s part philosopher if you ask me. He has said he had a dream about people not connecting with the each other or the natural world. Seems like it has only gotten worse.😟 Their music is truly timeless.

this song has so many great little nuances. Like at the beginning of the song. That noise was created by putting a microphone near an air vent and hearing the air going through it.

I have heard this song since it's beginning, but only now after seeing the lyrics, do I realize there were a few references to the time of Noah "fly and find the new green bough - return like the white dove". And later, "and two by two my human zoo - they'll be running for to come out of the rain"

Hey, (speaking of Brian May genius) there’s a song he did (sings it too)on this same album, “Good Company” where he uses his guitar to make a old time jazz band. Growing up, I always thought it was a bunch of trombones and other instruments, gotta check it!!!!
On "Good Company" he played a ukulele not a guitar.
Manni.. he played a George Formby “ukulele/Banjo to be exact but I’m speaking of the Dixieland Jazz band part. He made all the jazz band horns, trombones, every instrument, even bells on his guitar. He’s quite famous for this, check it out!
Brian May also wrote "Keep Yourself Alive", "Brighton Rock", "Now I'm Here", "Tie Your Mother Down", "We Will Rock You", & "Fat-Bottomed Girls".

"Transported" is the word that always comes to my mind when listening to Queen songs. You should give the song "39" a go, written and performend by Brian May. Talks about the first settlers heading out to the Americas. A different vibe, but so amazing. The lyrics alone are incredibly beautiful. Your observations are very astute & to the point btw!
If you want a song that's very in the vein of this one, go "White Man" from Queen's 1976 album "A Day At The Races". If you want a really fun, newer video: "The Mircale" from the album of the same name from 1989.
On the LP sleeve is the notation of NO SYNTHESIZERS! One of my favourite Queen songs. Please give your reaction to "The Year of '39 ' . About time relativity in long range space travel.
There is no synth on this song so those sounds you hear that sound like bells, etc. are Brian's guitar. This was intended to be Brian's Bohemian Rhapsody but didn't do as well. I think it is too musically intricate for many audiences which is my opinion as to why it didn't receive that kind of acclaim. It is a massive song with so many inovative technology employed. That repetitive echo was something Brian presented to the band. He explained it to Freddie and told him what he wanted. Freddie tried it with vocals and was intrigued with it giving Brian even more than he has hoped for. Brian was surprised and excited by Freddie's additions to his song. Things were recorded in Stereo back then. Brian used something called a Bell Technique which first records one side, then overlays it to the other side then to the middle so you get that triple echo when you overlay it on the tape. Yes there were headphones but stereo was unique in the way it split the sound in two to give a more realistic sound. Prior to stereo, there was just one piece of music and it was the same throughout. I love this song.
You're absolutely right that Brian May, and all the members of Queen, are geniuses. May's guitar work is unique among rock guitarists. While he was not the first (or last) to incorporate elements of European classical music into rock guitar, he did so in a way nobody did before or since. All of the members of Queen were highly skilled and very imaginative and talented.
Your comment about the cinematic effect of the song is very accurate. Good music should communicate a story and a real visceral feeling to the listener - it should paint pictures in the mind and tell a real story. You doubtless also noticed that the song's lyrics and music combined evoke a religious / spiritual essence. May was attempting to recreate the relationship between a (largely fictional) Prophet and the people he was trying to communicate his message to.
The back and forth between speakers is a recording technique called panning. Many records from the 60s and 70s used this. Check out the studio work of Jimi Hendrix.
Here's some more history for you. Stereo recording was invented in 1931 by a man named Alan Blumlein. Headphones were invented in 1910 by a man named Nathanial Baldwin.

@@LFRJojo Only if you listen close to the lyrics, you hear a powerfull message. Freddie was very sick, but the way he sings, amazing! So much respect for him, and the band offcourse. They stood by him till the end. Innuendo has a influence by Led Zeppelins Kashmir I believe. The video itself is made of many little clips, Freddie was to sick to perform in the video. When I listened to a Queen album I often wondered "How are they going to transfer this to a live concert setting" since they were so well known as an amazing live band. They always seemed to find a way.

Awesome! Totally another gem of their genius! There so many underrated songs, its just tragic! I totally agree, Brian is brilliant, also Leonardo da Vinci level genius! Speaking of Einstein, check out 39- a space travel folk song Brian wrote with Einstein's clock paradox theory woven in. In the Prophet's song, I think there are veiled references to Noah's Ark, such as the subject of storms, "two by two my human zoo", "running for to come out of the rain", "return like the white dove." Alongside the guitar, the instrument played in the intro and finale is called a Japanese toy koto. Queen was deeply influenced by Japan. When Queen went on tour there in 1973/74, no joke, it was like Beatlemania. The Japanese were the first to acknowledge Queen as the rock Gods they still are! As a huge gesture of gratitude and love, they wrote the song "Teo Toriatte" which is sung in English and Japanese which was released on the album "A day at the races". Check out the studio version.

The white dove finding the green bough, two by two, the human zoo, kings of beasts counting their days, death all around for people of the shaking and breaking earth, to listen to the warning, running for to come out the rain, fleeing for their life until God purged the place...

Go back 1 year from this song to 1974. Brian May solos mostly but not all originate from the track BRIGHTON ROCK. Using the echo delay to make 1 guitar sound like 3. This song was made to reflect and contrast that if you can make the guitar do it then why not a vocal delay? You need to look at all queen albums in sequence to see how what they started with developed into what was to come especially up to the Jazz album in1978. Check out album from 1980 THE Game specifically track called SAVE ME. Also have a look at and listen to their 1980 ALBUM soundtrack to the biggest film of that year FLASH GORDON. The guitar work is genius.

I love the way the songs refers to him as a wise man, a prophet, a madman. Yes, the difference between a madman and a prophet is whether their words come to truth. And many are often written off as Madmen from the get go.

The song is about a Prophet who sees a coming storm that will bring death and destruction to many. It's a very similar story to Noah.
thanks, again LFR - I already commented below - but don't know if I mentioned that the "transition" from song-to-song on Queen albums was so smooth that there was not the usual "blank space" - and in this case... the transition went straight into "Love of my Life" -- where Brian also played cello and harp.. sorry, but been in love with Brian for a very long time... lol
Another earlier biblical track they did appears on their first album. Simply about the life of Jesus...... If you want to hear some pre Freddie queen stuff look for GETTIN SMILE by Smile on UA-cam. The Original album title was Ghost of a smile released in 1969.
