Happy Fun Springtime Series! (2 of 8) I submitted the Cellar Darling cover of this song in the first GWC’s Dad cover series, but here’s the original. As I said then it’s a Brian May composition inspired by a fever dream of a great flood that he had, and eventually appeared on their fourth album, 1975’s “A Night at the Opera.” Obviously this is pre-digital, so using very primitive tape delay devices they couldn’t get as complex with the vocal layers as Anna in Cellar Darling did, but it’s still impressively executed.

The Prophet song is the longest Queen piece ever performed. John Deacon's bass line is only one note repeated.
This song is the best song ever.
When you think they were creating this 48 years ago, the craft and technicality are amazing!
I prefer it to Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian wrote it when he had hepatitis, is based on Noah and the floods

I remember siting back in a big old chair with headphones on and eyes closed just being carried away by this song, it was magic back then and it's still magic now.

..and it goes beautifully into Love of My Life. Should be listened together. The Prophet's Song was the song that blew me away as a five year old walking past my older sister's bedroom and she was jamming it on her stereo. It was a brand new record at the time. I sat in the hallway and was transfixed and became the hugest Queen fan from that moment. Thanks for the reaction!
Some people raise their eyebrows when I say Queen could be heavy and progressive as they only know the radio hits, then I play this track!! Sure, Bohemian Rhapsody gets lauded as the masterpiece of this album, but for me, this isn't far behind.
This album played so many musical genres - rock (Rhapsody, I'm In Love With My Car, Death On Two Legs, Sweet Lady), metal/progressive (Prophet's), folk ('39), ragtime (Seaside Rendezvous, Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon), ballad (Love Of My Life), pop (You're My Best Friend, Good Company), and an anthem (God Save The Queen)... it had it all!

Thanks, guys! This has sometimes been referred to as "Brian May's Bohemian Rap" -personally, I think this is even more intricate. Brian was doing all that echo & repeat on the guitar....and the lyrics are almost "biblical" .. lol at the end this goes straight into "Love of my Life"...

At the beginning / end. Some may be guitar. But. Apart from writing it, singing the opening lines of the song, & killing it on The Red Special. He is starting / ending it. On a Japanese instrument called a Toy Koto. Which he picked up / learned to play. During their first tour of Japan. In the early 70s.
I remember getting the album back in the mid 70's....listened to it on my friends quadraphonic sterero with headphones....just in awe to what I was listening...pure eargasm

Queen & The Cars, even Cliff Richard in his song Devil Woman toyed with stereo phonic sound making a 3D space with sound for those who had the new Quadraphonic stereo sound systems in their car's and homes that gave the ability to engineer music to swirl around the listener. They could have a five part harmony with one harmony over head and one part of the harmony in each corner of your car then move a voice or instrument in any direction so the music could swirl around the listener. It was amazing! If you by chance had your headphones on and placed a series of albums on your auto change turn table when this song(the first on side two of the album)and you fell a sleep when it Dropped and started playing you were about to be startled awake when the round started after a voice suddenly very close to one ear appears out of nowhere! It made me scream! Mom came running, I made everyone in my family close their eyes and listen to this song to watch the shock when their eyes flew open! We never experienced 3D sound before... It was magic! I love the band The Cars because they used 3D music effects so often in their songs. Depending where you sat in a car every person had their own listening experience. It gave new meaning to car Chinese Fire Drills, because what you heard was different no matter where you sat. Back then we pooled our money for gas if we didn't have enough to see a movie or something so we could aimlessly cruise around in the car, just to get out from under Mom & Dad's suspicious watchful eye. In the day of one house one TV no computer... what could you quietly do in your room to occupy your time and not be board out of your mind???

This is one of the most underated song by Queen 😢 this Brian May’s MASTERPIECE some think its quites as good as BR and I one of them! The high note you hear from the guitar is from a special japanese childguitar, Brian get it from a child when they was in Japan, so thats very special…. I love this song. Egen the song was made, Freddie had to made his singing with himself, it was sliced up all over the studio, ohhh I see him for me when they should set it together…..omg, Freddie worked very fast 😅😅😅

I wore the grooves out on my LP in 1975 playing this, BoRhap, You're My Best Friend, I'm in Love with My Car, and Love of My Life particularly over and over. This was Brian May's masterpiece in much the same way as Bo Rhap was Freddie's. It's probably best described as a rock madrigal with fugue, over 8 mins long and something I'm pretty sure no other rock band would have the guts to put on an album. "A Night at the Opera" is truly eclectic and sheer genius. (but I'm not a fan or anything... hahaha)
Brian’s style was a little more on the hard rock/metal side and this is a great example

Please someone explain why we are subjected to such indifferent demonstrations of creativity and musicianship nowadays, barring a few exceptions - this should serve as incredible motivation for aspiring musicians and especially current artists

It's truly pathetic that virtually NO ONE realizes that this song is actually the musical retelling of Noah's Ark in Genesis. Noah IS the Prophet referred to here.
it‘s „the“ original! no other version comes close to this, because it‘s exactly the way it‘s intended. should there be any modern version with even more complexity put over by anyone else than queen it’s simply taken and overdone with the attitude „faster, higher, more“, so not worth a hipe, i guess.
Neither of you seems to get the point of the song.
I admire the musicianship and the imagination of this song. However, it's also very pompous, pretentious and overblown. It meant nothing to me when I was younger and I've always considered it a good example of why punk rock had to happen.
Maybe it does not mean anything to you, but there is a message in the song, that people should be more caring of each other. There is also the idea that you might be indoctrinated by religion. The acapella section is like religious indoctrination. Queen was not always a band that took themselves too seriously, but generally their music does have a lot of meaning and messages. Punk rock obviously has its appeal and its place, it more focused on raw emotion. I personally like punk rock and prog rock. But punk rock was not really an advancement of music. Progressive rock was focusing more on the advancement of music. (These days progressive rock and metal does not focus on the advancement of music). People are different, they express themselves differently. Brian May wrote this song, he was a good musician with years of experience, he was an university graduate from a more middle class family. He is going to express himself very differently from Jonny Lydon who grew as a working class person from Cockney. That does mean not that his message in the song is not heartfelt.
People express their own experiences within music. and obviously people do have a lot of different experiences.
Now we have basically gone 100% in the wrong direction when it comes to simplification of music. All of the most popular songs have the same chords and chord progressions. All of the songs are between 1 - 4 chords. They have similar drum patterns. Everything has the same formula. I am not blaming punk rock but they did create the idea of simplifying music. Popular music has now basically been destroyed by over simplification.
The music industry does need artists with very unique and individual approaches well.
@@ZENOBlAmusic Thanks for your detailed reply to my comment. I agree with most of what you say. Having grown up with Queen (yes, I'm old 😄), I like a lot of their material. Of course, you're right to make the point that there's enough room for all types of music and that different genres serve different functions. You grasped the point I made about punk being the antidote to 70s rock excesses, so there's no need for me to labour that.
Adventurous, forward thinking, unique, spectacular is more like it
