"Bulls on Parade" deals with the U.S. military and its aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to obtain military contracts with lines such as, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal," and "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and moving."[5] The song is widely known for its popular guitar solo containing a vinyl scratch effect used by Tom Morello, done by toggling between two pickups, one on and one off, while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups to create the effect that someone is scratching a vinyl disc. Morello has stated that the sound he was going for was a "sort of 'Geto Boys' sound, menacing"[6] with E♭ tuning in both guitar and bass and a wah-wah pedal fully in the treble position.

The "Rally 'round the family with a pocket full of shells" line is lyricist Zach de la Rocha highlighting the fact that some US politicians talk about "family values" while making society more dangerous by making the military huge and deregulating gun sales so that anybody who wants a gun can get one without restrictions. This song was released in 1996, two years after one particular US political party released its "Contract with America," which advocated just the sort of policies criticized in the lyrics of this song. That's the "contract" referred to in the line, "What we don't know keeps the Contract alive and moving." Keep in mind that de la Rocha never would talk about or print out his lyrics, so any lyrics you find online are just what people have transcribed from what they think they've heard. Most of them will probably be correct, but some won't. Also, Zach is of Mexican ancestry, though he may have some African in him, who knows?, but the scratching guitarist, Tom Morello, is half-Kenyan, so he could definitely qualify as Black.

Rage Against The Machine really managed to combine rock and hip-hop elements without sacrificing one or the other. 'Rally Around The Family' was a right-wing 'family values' protest, they bs about family values while they prepare for violence. In a lot of ways it sounds like he was predicting the rise of right-wing violence.
Zach de la Rocha, the lead singer/writer is part black. Tom Morello, the lead guitarist who does all the crazy record scratch and theramin sounds with his guitar, is half black. Not that it matters, but you brought it up in your reaction. Another great black metal band is Body Count. You may have heard of their lead singer before. You'd want to check out Cop Killer, No Lives Matter, and Black Hoodie for sure. A really powerful band with similar themes to Rage Against the Machine, but with a more traditional metal sound.
You'll be surprised to know that the "scratching" wasn't done on records, it was done on a guitar with wah pedal cranking. Tom Morello was heavily inspired by DJs in his area at the time rather than other guitarists so much.
By far the best concert I ever went to was RATM and Wu Tang at the tweeter center in Mansfield Massachusettsin 2007!!! It downpoured the entire day and RATM was about 45 minutes late to the venue. The crowd went crazy while waiting for RATM and ended up setting the wooden fence at the back of the lawn on fire! RATM was so apologetic about being late that they played an extra hour and a half! I'll never forget that experience for the rest of my life! It was a once in a lifetime experience
I thumbed through some of the other comments, and dropped by to say: "Wake Up", where they speak on the murders of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and, "Take The Power Back", where they talk about how the (Euro-centric) school system has taught brown and black people to hate themselves for hundreds of years. Keep on discovering Rage, brother! (Anger Is A Gift!)
The scratches are actually done on the guitar by Tom Morello their guitarist. They don't use turntables or keyboards on this song or any other song for that matter period all the stuff that you hear in the songs that sound obscure and like this it's all done by instruments
there is a reason why bands like Rage and System of a Down got weeded out - they were educating wyppl on things that we may have never, in those pre-wiki and other educational sites days, been able to understand or comprehend. I am the most translucent 44 y/o, late gen x/early millennial that grew up in a town of fewer than 1k ppl - had it not been for early Mtv and bands like Rage, WuTang, RunDMC, Tool, NWA etc etc etc - i would not be the activist i am today without bands like this and that’s why bands like this will still sell out every venue, but never have a ‘hit’. I show my age when i say this - i was at a lollapalooza show in the late 90’s, and being able to be completely ‘present’ for each band made me appreciate music at a level i didn’t know existed. So saw Snoop, Tool, Devo and like so many more…but every single person there was as enthusiastic for EVERY band, no matter if they knew their songs or not.
For a long time after first hearing this song, I thought it was about the Ruby Ridge standoff between Federal Agents and Randy Weaver's family, which lasted for 10 days (August 21st-August 31st, 1992), during which Randy Weaver's wife and their newborn child were shot and killed on the front porch of their home. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Ridge
Yes, they were/are badass! I will check out your other Rage tunes and also suggest to you (since you seem to dig it so much) "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith & Run DMC from back in the day - first-ever rap/rock collaboration that I am aware of... Also, three members of this band created another group with Chris Cornell (singer from Seattle grunge band, Soundgarden) - RIP Chris! The group is called Audioslave and I think it's just as good as the stuff they made with their original frontman. Peace Jojo!

'Rally Around The Family' was a right-wing 'family values' protest, they bs about family values while they prepare for violence. In a lot of ways it sounds like he was predicting the rise of right-wing violence.
Not a prediction, a recognition of existing violence.
One of my favorite past time is watching people listening to RATM for the first time
You'll be surprised to know that the "scratching" wasn't done on records, it was done on a guitar with wah pedal cranking. Tom Morello was heavily inspired by DJs in his area at the time rather than other guitarists so much.
You weren't ready for that. Respect. I liked subscribed and shared. Funk the g ride, I want the machines that are makin em.
Duuuude that's Tom Morellos guitar, that guy is a genius
By far the best concert I ever went to was RATM and Wu Tang at the tweeter center in Mansfield Massachusettsin 2007!!! It downpoured the entire day and RATM was about 45 minutes late to the venue. The crowd went crazy while waiting for RATM and ended up setting the wooden fence at the back of the lawn on fire! RATM was so apologetic about being late that they played an extra hour and a half! I'll never forget that experience for the rest of my life! It was a once in a lifetime experience
he makes that guitar scratching sound like a record.. so cool
You're killing it Jojo. Hell yea dude.
I thumbed through some of the other comments, and dropped by to say:
"Wake Up", where they speak on the murders of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and,
"Take The Power Back", where they talk about how the (Euro-centric) school system has taught brown and black people to hate themselves for hundreds of years.
"They use force, to make you do, what the deciders have decided you must do!" -Zach de la Rocha, 1993
Bro that's not record scratching....it's a guitar. Tommy Morello is a frickin guitar genius!! One of my all time fave guitarists!!!!
there is a reason why bands like Rage and System of a Down got weeded out - they were educating wyppl on things that we may have never, in those pre-wiki and other educational sites days, been able to understand or comprehend.
I am the most translucent 44 y/o, late gen x/early millennial that grew up in a town of fewer than 1k ppl - had it not been for early Mtv and bands like Rage, WuTang, RunDMC, Tool, NWA etc etc etc -
i would not be the activist i am today without bands like this
and that’s why bands like this will still sell out every venue, but never have a ‘hit’.
I show my age when i say this - i was at a lollapalooza show in the late 90’s, and being able to be completely ‘present’ for each band made me appreciate music at a level i didn’t know existed. So saw Snoop, Tool, Devo and like so many more…but every single person there was as enthusiastic for EVERY band, no matter if they knew their songs or not.
oh please, dont divert from the Rage trip. it's worth every frustration .
Killing it Jo Jo, keep it up man!
Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells. = taking people by force

That "record scratch" is actually tom morello on a guitar
Another epic 90s rock music video
Yes, they were/are badass! I will check out your other Rage tunes and also suggest to you (since you seem to dig it so much) "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith & Run DMC from back in the day - first-ever rap/rock collaboration that I am aware of...
Also, three members of this band created another group with Chris Cornell (singer from Seattle grunge band, Soundgarden) - RIP Chris! The group is called Audioslave and I think it's just as good as the stuff they made with their original frontman. Peace Jojo!
His father is a Mexican-American, with some African and Sephardi Jewish , while his mother was born to Manuel García Urias, a Mexican-American, and Olive Pearl Fleming, who was of German and Irish
Dude!! This is my favorite band in the more current era, we need another metal funk band so bad!!
Lead singer Zack de la rocha is half mexican about 50 % divided between irish, german, african, jewish
Welcome to RATM, you have an Awesome trip ahead of you!
"Down Rodeo" is a powerful song by Rage
Love your reactions man!! RATM's energy is straight up palpable
He thought tom’s solo was a record scratch BRO THATS A GUITAR give the man his props
Feeling it brother! Loving it!
I seen these guys in Baltimore back in the 90's and been addicted to there music ever since.Always awake.Pantera has a few really good songs as well.
Tennessee🤘
Yeah, RATM came on the scene like a whirlwind. Unreal to think this album is nearly 30 years old. Amazing band
It's a "FINESSE" shirt. 😂
just to mention, that is not a record scracht. It is Tom Morello. the guitarrist, imitating a record scratch with his pick on the strings of his guitar.......
... when he finds out it’s note a record scratch...
🤯
watch the video home boy ! That dude Tom Morello made his guitar sound like turntables !!! Hes great !!
All sounds made by bass, drums and guitar, says so in the album liner notes. No turntables, scratching or samples, that is just SICK guitar from Tom Morello.
30 years ago ... this guys were insane
Yes young man you are discovering one of the best and diverse bands ever! Good on ya
