About Ymir, it’s kinda sad how a lot of people don’t understand her character. She tries to play up a selfish front, under the statement that she wants to live for herself only, but her actions speak otherwise. She helped sasha to be herself, she was willing to reveal her secret in order to save peoples lives (on the snowy mountains, and in the castle) Now she is literally giving herself up to help Reiner and Berthold knowing the historia will be saved in the walls. That’s why she is always so tough with historia about “live for no one by myself” philosophy, because Ymir can’t do that, she wants to, but she can’t, amd even historia realizes that, that’s why she says “Ymir Let’s start leaving for ourselves” but even though her precious Historia told her that, she still decided helping Reiner and she doesn’t want that kinda life for Historia, since she is the most important and precious person to her.
Not exactly. She can still be considered somewhat selfish because most of her actions were performed in order to keep Historia safe. She didn't care much about other people in general because if she had then she would have helped out during season 1. The point is that she will only help people if it doesn't cause her problems in return.
Very true, at first i dont really get Ymir character and her goal but after looking back on her action and words, it makes perfect sense. One thing about this episode is that Hannes death in it retroactively justifies his decision back in season 1, a lot of people didn't like him because he ran away from the smiling titan. This episode proved, once and for all, that Hannes wouldn't have been able to kill that Titan back then, meaning that his perceived cowardice actually saved the lives of Eren & Mikasa, who both would have almost certainly died without his help. It just goes to show that reckless courage isn't always the correct choice, and that's one of the things that this series is very good at displaying in excruciating fashion - it does so with eren's squad back in season 1 getting killed because of his charge & it is also true for Jean. So many people hate on him for not fighting back in the battle of Trost, but Marco said the right thing. They survived because of Jean's decision. Not everyone is Mikasa and Levi.
I don't think hanes did a cowardice choice by running away, he had to run away for mikasa and eren's sake to save them from that titan, it's not like he had time to fight that titan and also eren's mom told him to run away and take the kids away from the titan. @@mustafamusa798 I think the point is that people tend to have the opinion of him being a coward, regardless of whether it was the smart choice or if he was scared or not. And that's usually what people say when they don't like a person's choice to defend or retreat. The word is often used to simply critcize or demonize those actions based on opinion. You guys are right about the voice acting. Yuki kaji (Erens voice actor) was screaming so hard that he passed out and had to be hospitalised, lmao seems that it was worth it. This is one of the biggest reasons why AOT must be watched with original voice actors. Loved your reactions and can't wait for season 3 and 4, peak fiction.
Actually that was Season 4, not Season 2. During Season 2's voice acting, he actually just almost lost his voice, but in Season 4 I think I heard he had some medical problem as he had to scream at that same volume again lol.
23:15 As for "Why did Mikasa bring that at that point?" when they were about to die... That's it. They were ALL about to die. Hannes just died. The rest of the scouts were busy dying or just trying to survive a few extra moments... Jean was unconcious... Armin himself was protecting him but both were at the end of their rope. Reiner finally managed to get rid of all the titans and was comming at full speed. Eren couldn't transform and didn't even have ODM Gear to fight or flee. Mikasa couldn't even stand because of her injuries (she got several ribs broken when the titan in the previous episode grabbed her). If you noticed, Eren had to carry her away because she couldn't even run... Mikasa, seeing that this was it, the end of the lives, just took that "now or never" chance and went pretty much all out. Personally, I'm pretty sure Eren's "dismissing the kiss" was because accepting it at that moment would have been the same as giving up and letting Mikasa die; and he wasn't going to allow that, not without a fight. TATAKAE!
12:42 😂😂😂 I know Carlie was talking about Mikasa on Eren's back, but hearing her say that and then the scene cutting to the Smiling Titan getting ripped apart is hilarious 😂
@@CarlieAndAnge also my favorite OST of all time is the one that they played in the moment where eren controlled the titans, we hear it alot throughout the show, its called “youseebiggirl” (not t:t) also known as “apple seed”
Mikasa decided to talk about it at that moment because she had already given up the battle and she thought they would probably die, so she wanted Eren to know her feelings before it was too late. However, Eren did not give up, that's why he got up and faced the titan.
Your reactions were priceless during the tender Mikasa & Eren moment. Most people get pissed they're doing that in the middle of a fight, even you guys showed some discomfort at the timing. From Carlie's sobbing in joy to my favorite...Ange's squirming to see if Eren would actually complete the kiss, I was rrrrollin' haha. You guys have really come in to your own as reactors since I first started watchin' ya'll episode 1. Knowing the tropes, accepting the tropes, actually appreciating the non-native voice acting, I hope you guys get all the success you deserve. - P
Purple flowers (and the scarf) are certainly Eren and Mikasa's relationship representation, im glad you guys never missed that detail! Btw, the purple flowers are Campanulas or Bellflowers, wich meaning is related to feelings of gratitude and everlasting love. So yeah, eremika ♡♡♡
While I cry every time with this episode, I burst out laughing when Carlie started slapping Angelo as she was crying after Eren told Mikasa he would wrap the scarf around her as many times as she'd like. It was so adorable! Your reactions to this episode were definitely my favorite of other reactions I've seen. Love you guys!
Eren saying he'll "wrap her scarf around her now and forever" is not just cute, it's actually a japanese culture thing. When Japanese couples start dating they won't say "I love you" instead they'll say something like "I'll always eat your rice soup" or something similar to that. So yea, this is Eren confessing back to Mikasa and ever Japanese person would have gotten that hint ;)
Fun fact: Eren's VA actually put a lot of strain on his throat for the screams in this episode. To the point where he lost his voice for a bit, I believe. R.I.P. Hannes. You tried your best to avenge Carla and protect the children she cared about. Also, poor Ymir tried her hardest to live for herself and be selfish. But she's always helping out other people because it's just in her nature to do that, just like when she tried to help out those people in her flashback even after they turned on her. She could've lived a life together with Historia, the girl she loved. But she saw two people that needed help. She regained her freedom while staring up at the stars of a beautiful night sky, and now she willingly gives away her freedom on a similar night. Truly a Goddess.
It wasnt in this episode he screamed so much he lost his voice it was in season 4, the part where he was chained and broke himself out by ripping off the skin on his hands
She always seems to make her choice in the service of a cause that seems truly hopeless, at the moment of greatest desperation -- the soldiers pointing their guns at the congregants' heads, the Titans about to rip apart Reiner and Bert. Perhaps the reason she understood HIstoria so well is that they're not so different?
Let's *GOOO!* Ange and Carlie! Been waiting for this reaction! BTW. Erens Japanese voice actor - Yuki Kaji during his scream where Eren connects fist with the Smiling Titans palm, the VA actually tore his vocal chords on *that* attempt. He had to take nearly 3 months off all work to heal.
In the Mikasa moment, I'm pretty sure she went all out saying all that because she accepted death at the moment. Eren however, wasn't ready to die yet.
"We haven't seen Levi at all this season." That's because Levi sprained his ankle and this whole season took place within the span of two days. The season started the same morning as the end of the last season, so now it's only the day after Annie was captured.
S2 complete! What a season. Fantastic reactions and discussion, can't wait for S3. I'm glad you didn't use your notebook. There's not gonna be enough time to look away from the screen. The show is just that good. 21:32 Had me rolling. 😂 I agree, Ange, show us the goddamn basement! 😆 Carlie, that was one of the best, most wholesome reactions to the Mikasa/Eren scene I've ever seen. So good. I also wasn't a huge fan of Ymir during S2 on my first watch through. There is a lot of subtext and nuance to her; on subsequent watch throughs she is now in my top three favs. Despite coming across as rude and abrasive, Ymir is incredibly selfless. She has encouraged and supported Historia to live a life she would be proud of (she also encouraged Sasha to do this, too!), has fought for Historia's survival, empathised with Reiner and Bert and their troubles, and made the difficult decision to go with them, as she felt she owed them for "saving her from her nightmare." She puts up this tough front, but at her heart she cares about others at the expense of herself. Some great comments already about the Eren/Mikasa scene. Mikasa professed her love for Eren in the most dire moment when they all thought they were about to die. Her ribs were broken and she was unable to fight, Jean was knocked unconcious, Erwin lost an arm, the Scouts were scattered and being picked off one-by-one. Death seemed almost certain. And then they watch Hannes die. It breaks Eren and he feels like he's still that powerless little boy who watched his mother get eaten by this same titan - he's overcome with self-loathing and despair. Then Mikasa proves him wrong by showing how Eren has fought for her and has made a difference in her life and that he is worth something. Also, regarding Eren neglecting his friends: I think it's more his obsession with fighting injustice. He's so headstrong and feels so strongly about righting wrongs that he rushes off into situations that feels like he's ditching his friends. This has consequences, however. One of the reasons I think this show is popular is because it doesn't shy away from characters dealing with their trauma. Lots of characters are broken and hurt, and the show allows them to explore this. Next time you dislike a character see if you can look beneath the surface and understand them - that's where some of the best moments of this show lies. Other obligtory comments: -Isayama (the writer) didn't include a kissing scene as he felt he couldn't do it justice. Instead we had that beautiful line of Eren confirming his care for Mikasa. "I'll wrap that scarf around, for now and forever..." -Insane voice acting by Yuki Kaji. Yes, he injured his vocal cords doing that scene. GOAT. -Levi absent as he was recovering from an ankle injury received while fighting the Female Titan in S1. S3 here we go! 🔥🔥🔥
Glad to see Carlie viscerally appreciate one of the most romantic lines of the show. "I'll wrap that around you... as many times as you want. Now and forever, as much as you want!"
To this day i seriously can’t express the emotions i felt and feel watching this episode is still one of my favorite aot episodes ever definitely top 5 even watching reactions to it still makes me want to cry, also Erens mental breakdown is by far one of the most emotionally impactful moments in aot for me the first time i watched it i cried like a baby i felt his pain and frustration he is my favorite character in aot so hearing him scream and cry like that hurted me so much 😢 Yuki Kaji is still my favorite anime voice actor and also is the first time we got to see Mikasa be so vulnerable everything she said to Eren was so pure and beautiful she was ready to die alongside him but not before expressing everything he means to her and Erens response was the cherry on top basically and i love you too if you understand Erens characters
Eren not kissing Mikasa at that moment was him not accepting his end there. He keeps moving forward, no giving up. Fun Fact : Mikasa - Eren didn't Kiss because Isayama was too shy too make draw that scene. So, instead of accepting the Kiss, Eren stood up to face the situation.
11:24 this scene was in erens pov, she looks so beautiful They were supposed to kiss in this episode but then isayama was too shy to write it and didn’t know what was going to happen to their relationship after they kissed.
During most of the season one every time Ange mentioned that they need to go to that basement I wanted to tell "Ange My Boy they gonna take their SWEET time", but didn't wanted to spoil anything, now I was laughing my ass off while he was cursing that basement and the key LOL

I think you missed the bit at the end. Like Ymir came halfway out of her Titan to talk to people earlier in the season, the "shirtless blonde surfer dude" was doing the same thing. You can see all the steam coming from its nape showing that it's open. He WAS the beast titan.
Another thing to consider regarding Eren's breakdown after Hannes dies: In the 2nd episode of Season 1 Hannes throws Eren to the ground and tells him that Eren failed to save his mother because he wasnt strong enough, and that Hannes failed to save Eren's mother because he wasnt brave enough. Fast forward to Season 2 Episode 12: Hannes is very much brave enough to avenge Eren's mother, however Eren sees his inability to transform as proof that he hasnt become strong enough to save her, and so he blames himself for both his mother's and Hannes' deaths in that moment. Once you add on the amount of guilt and responsibility he feels for all the scouts that have died chasing after him when he was captured by Reiner and those that died trying to capture Annie, it becomes very clear that this was the final straw that broke him in that moment. Also yeah the cute moment with Mikasa and Eren was because Mikasa thought they were both about to die and wanted to tell him how she felt and how she doesnt think he is worthless before they died.
after this episode is like...when the show ACTUALLY starts lol. can't wait! been super fun following along each day. please make sure to do reactions to openings and endings however so your theories can be totally informed. also the opening and endings are just...part of the anime experience and your audience would value seeing you guys react and think through them.
Eren's VA is absolutely amazing! I remember feeling so stressed watching this episode for the first time but also being so happy that the Smiling Titan was finally gone. I always look forward to your reactions and can't wait for the season 3 reactions ^-^ ❤
One of the best episodes of the series and a really strong finish to season 2. The voice acting, the animation, the music (culminating in the pure artwork which is Historia's ODM kill), not to mention the ending sequence using Counter-attack Mankind... love it. Hannes' death is somewhat bitter-sweet, as tragic as it is, it shows he made the right decision back in season 1. Looking forward to s3!
@10:39 apparently from what I heard from others, eren voice actor (yuji Kaji) was told to act however he thought was appropriate in the situation, and the laughing/crying reaction was just perfect.
The 3rd season is my favorite season, Ange might need a new notebook by the time we get to 4😂 and can't wait for the insane nicknames y'all will give the titans that are coming up. Oh and Carlie, stock up on your tissues😂
@@ali_el_baba3665 the show is literally called Attack on Titan, we've seen them give names to almost every titan they've seen since season 1, more titan names is inevitable.
Eren totally got what Mikasa was trying to say. The reason he refused the kiss is because that is the "last kiss before we perish" kiss, and why he said he would wrap the scarf as many times as she wants-- Eren refused to surrender to fate and believed they still can find a way to survive and be with each other afterward.
"Because I'm probably the only one that understands the situation you're in." I remember first time watching this and wanting to hug them that time even though I did not understand them.
7:55 Cutting out Historia's kill is a crime. 😭 Just kidding hahaha. Thanks as always for your great and consistent uploads, Carlie, Ange! Looking forward to the next season!
The dynamic of the ErenxMikasa scene is actually brilliant. Mikasa thought they were about to die, neither of them could fight (her ribs broken, Eren with no ODM gear and unable to transform), so she decided to give up and at least share her feelings so she won’t die leaving them unsaid. Eren, conversely, looks like he’s sidestepping her feelings there, but in actuality what he’s rejecting is her ‘giving up…’ He insists on fighting until the last, protecting Mikasa like she’s protected him all this time.
The reason Mikasa thanked Eren for all he has done for her is because without that magical power coming out of no where everyone was going to die. Mikasa realizing she's never told him how she feels wants him to know before they die that she loves him. Eren hearing this is so emotionally taken he refuses to give up fighting and tries to punch a titan's hand away (as if that would do anything) It was an act of desperation on both of them.
Also there is a magazine droped by the time this ep was released with Eren and Mikasa's relationship card or smth. Mikasa's arrow to Eren says "love". Eren's arrow to Mikasa says "havent realized"! But yeah, its mutual and romantinc, and I love it ♡
I think that Eren didn't reject Mikasa, but that he realized that she was basically giving up and that was what he rejected, giving up. (Also, take it with a grain of salt because I'm not sure how reliable it is but I read Isayama, the author, said he did actually plan to make Eren and Mikasa kiss but wasn't sure how to deal with the dynamic after so he took that out)
@@0595791226 yeah i agree. And they are somewhat siblings. They obviously arent blood related but seeing them kissing would still be weird. So im kinda glad they didnt. And it turned out to be waaaaay better in my opinion.
@@ali_el_baba3665 I don't think they count as siblings in any way, they didn't grow up together or live together long enough as to develop that type of bond and it's very obvious they've never seen each other as siblings, Eren calls Carla and Grisha MY parents and Mikasa YOUR parents. Eren even explicitly says "I'm not your brother" multiple times. Grisha and Carla probably did see Mikasa as a daughter which could've made things awkward, but since neither of them has been around for a pretty long while, what they might think doesn't really matter.
Jean flying from a moving horse blood spilling from his nose...is it that hard to think that Human being isn't made to fall from a fast moving horse who suddenly gets knocked by a TITAN foot and the person flying from that horse would be injured...I just find it so funny how some reaction videos to that scene really shows how they can't think at all realistically what happens to you in that kind of situation where you just fall of a fast moving horse.
In that situation Mikasa already gave up and thought they were going to die soon, so she wanted to express her feelings toward Eren before it was too late...
26:12 now, I’m not a glasses expert but it’s just anime glasses doing anime glasses thing lol it’s a very common occurence in animes for them to suddenly be able to reflect the light, creating the glow up effect. This is especially apparent when the wearer is being a smartass pretty much. In some, the glasses thingy is used to heighten their coolness factor, but in others it is also often used as running gags. Keep the reactions up ! Been enjoying yours and loving the pacing too :]

Ymir and historia are both such great characters that go on par with each other. Because they are both similar but different at the same time. Their main theme is about being true to themselves. True to their thoughts and feeling and psyche. It can be embraced that Krista wasn't herself in the beginning because she wanted to be self sacrificial in a heroic way. While Ymir was calling her out for it. Though, Ymir was also not really herself either because she tried too hard to be herself. She understood herself so much yet wasn't able to use that knowledge to be herself. Instead, she accidentally became someone else. Their names is good symbolism for this. At first, we know Krista as Krista, but then in later episodes, we learn that her actual name is Historia. And using that identity, she will be able to be true to herself later on. Meanwhile, there's Ymir, she knows so much about herself yet can't embrace it. Looking at her name, she literally doesn't know her real name. She's been having a fake name this whole time. Symbolically meaning that she has a fake identity of herself. She can't embrace her true self, regardless of her knowledge. And she might never be able to... I can go deeper but I don't have much time.
Man, watching this reaction series again I now noticed that I made a huge disservice to myself by not watching the pre-discussion and post-discussion from every episode, this is gold.

TATAKAE!
Season 4 spoiler:
If eren had asked “what am I to you?” at that moment, do you think she would’ve said “family”?

Mikasa decided to talk about it at that moment because she had already given up the battle and she thought they would probably die, so she wanted Eren to know her feelings before it was too late. However, Eren did not give up, that's why he got up and faced the titan.

@@sebukoafk6515 Ngl, I still like Season 3 Part 2 better overall. Though one particular episode in Season 4 Part 1 is extraordinary as well
10:19 Eren's VA here is amazing. Still one of my favorite episodes simply for his monologue.
Yeah we heard about this!! The man is REALLY dedicated….
There is currently nothing in the world that makes me happier than watching a new Attack on Titan video from you!
Same, I love these guys lol
Same x2 i love them!
You have got to give it all to Eren's voice actor. He is just phenomenal and unrival.
Other obligtory comments:
-Isayama (the writer) didn't include a kissing scene as he felt he couldn't do it justice. Instead we had that beautiful line of Eren confirming his care for Mikasa. "I'll wrap that scarf around, for now and forever..."
-Insane voice acting by Yuki Kaji. Yes, he injured his vocal cords doing that scene. GOAT.
-Levi absent as he was recovering from an ankle injury received while fighting the Female Titan in S1.

18:15 Ange's laught out of the blue seems like those crazy mad characters from fantasy animes hahahha

One of the best episodes of the series and a really strong finish to season 2. The voice acting, the animation, the music (culminating in the pure artwork which is Historia's ODM kill), not to mention the ending sequence using Counter-attack Mankind... love it.

"Because I'm probably the only one that understands the situation you're in."

To clarify Mikasa was certain they were gonna die. Hence that confession sorta thingy that she did there.
You got to love how for every answer you get you get five more questions
This is what proves that Erens feelings for Mikasa went beyond just family. Yams said they were supposed to kiss here but he was too shy to draw it.
Also there is a magazine droped by the time this ep was released with Eren and Mikasa's relationship card or smth. Mikasa's arrow to Eren says "love". Eren's arrow to Mikasa says "havent realized"! But yeah, its mutual and romantinc, and I love it ♡
Kiss in front of Hannes getting devoured alive? Yams the dark comedian...
@@0595791226 Maybe. I wish they had kept that scene where Eren was worried about Mikasa afterwards and thanked Jean for saving her though.
Mikasa was going for the kiss and confession because she thought it was the end.. she thought they are dy*ing
The third season is 22 episodes, it will answer the questions you asked, but it will ask other questions 😂😂💔
Eren got rainbow hands
I did not expect that line
In that situation Mikasa already gave up and thought they were going to die soon, so she wanted to express her feelings toward Eren before it was too late...

The blonde surfer man 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mikasa thought that was the end for them. She didn't sees any hopes. So she wants to confess everything before dying
Man, watching this reaction series again I now noticed that I made a huge disservice to myself by not watching the pre-discussion and post-discussion from every episode, this is gold.
The amazing voice acting in this episode was so beautiful you guys had a great reaction! What Mikasa said to Eren actually is true, despite what we see Eren is extremely loyal to his friends even if he makes rash decisions sometimes. But that line about wrapping the scarf encapsulates it all, this is still their best scene together in the show for me and I'm fully caught up.
