Colonel Bansod's first reinvention- the INSAS BULLPUP

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 22 чер 2024
  • The #INSAS rifle had a rather short and unimaginative existence- dogged by quality control issues through a 25 year service life, it never found favour with the army. It went through multiple and incremental iterations-- the 1A, B and C- before the army switched calibers in 2020 and went for a heavier battle rifle (the SiG 7.62) and another assault rifle the AK-203. But around this time, a brilliant young Indian Army officer saw potential in this weapon and reimagined it as a bullpup optimised for Close Quarter Battle Ops that could help him and his mates fight in confined spaces.
    He chopped the 960 mm long fixed-butt weapon to around 600 mm...cut the 464 mm long barrel to around 300 mm. optimised it for a range of around 100 metres. Fitted it with a new 30-round box magazine (polymer with steel inserts) four Picattiny rails- and (neglected to mention this in video) two M-Lok rails.
    As you all know, the INSAS family had three weapons, an AR, LMG and CQB carbine. The AR and LMG were inducted but the CQB carbine was rejected because of flash and recoil issues. The bullpup INSAS is an imaginative solution which could have been tried. (Im told there was one such attempt in the past, but didn't succeed).
    The officer who designed and developed the INSAS bullpup ? Colonel Prasad Bansod- who then went on to bigger and greater things like the ASMI 9 mm SMG. The INSAS bullpup is where he cut his teeth.
    The only prototype of this weapon is kept in Colonel Bansod's parent unit- the Indian Army's Infantry School in Mhow.
    I haven't seen the weapon in action, but i'm told its quite reliable. Perhaps there is merit in resurrecting this design for special duty tasks.

    Friends, must clarify that this video was shot in 2020. A lot of water has flowed down the Ganga since this prototype was created- but it still merits re-examination as a potential conversion of small numbers of INSAS for special tasks. a lot cost carbine conversion.

      Very good design Sandeep, this is perfect for tank crews, logistical truck drivers, helicopter crews and maybe even paratroopers. I am curious about how it handles recoil, retention of zero on an optic and possible gauntlet of elemental testing.

      Also yaar there are a ton of NRIs living in America, please tell INSAS to make a civilian legal version for the American market and get it imported through companies like century arms etc for sale. For the American market 5.56 is a popular caliber and most people prefer STANAG mags so if you guys can manage to pull that off and reveal it at shot show or something it would be amazing.

      Please don't waste your time advocating for weapons which are not fit for our brave soldiers. INSAS was a total failure. It has cost many precious and brave lives during the Kargil war. For yoir reference, you can ask the COBRA of the CRPF why they prefer old AK series rifles to INSAS in maoist ingested areas.

    As an American who typically prefers the AR platform, now having seen this, I cannot tell you how badly I want one of these bad boys. This looks to be the best attempt at a bullpup Kalashnikov I've ever seen in my life. And yes, I know the INSAS isn't a true Kalashnikov, but it's close enough.

      "INSAS rifle never had a problem". That crap jammed more than any AK platform Indian army uses. It doesn't even compete with G3 platforms or the M4 ones or even the bushmaster. That gun is at best a mediocre one but a lot of people wont say that cuz of the nationalistic sentiment.

    • @avadheshmalik
      @avadheshmalik Місяць тому +2

      @@followthegood1 it is just a bad design, period. Bad ergonomics, poor reliability due to several factors - including the quality of materials. It is pretty high maintenace too - unless it is absolutely clean, it will have hiccups. In battle- where the weapon might not be cleaned for several days - these issues are likely to be compounded (and they did, in Kargil).

  • @ScottAT
    @ScottAT Місяць тому +12

    Replace those sights immediately.
    A decent set of sights to use is Yankee Hill Front and rear iron sights set. Your front sight is backwards.
    As a left handed bullpup owner I highly recommend you add a 7 mm long U-shaped Chute style cover of steel over the ejection port to drop the shell casing downward after ejection. Pad the cover with a hard matte plastic like Delrin and it will be a sufficient cheek to stock weld for both sides left or right, allowing ambidextrous operation which is a critical issue with bullpups.

    Correction: Bullpup doesn't mean a "chopped" barrel. The USP of a Bullpup is that you can shorten the overall weapon length while maintaining the barrel length almost the same - it comes at the cost of trigger mechanics though. Almost all bullpups have relatively bad triggers (owing to the long levers/linkages required to connect the sear to the trigger proper)

    • @dj1NM3
      @dj1NM3 Місяць тому

      Also, a bullpupped AK isn't exactly a brand new idea, for example: Ukraine adopted their bullpup AK "Malyuk" (AKA "Vulcan-M") in 2017, with development of this weapon beginning way back in 2005 by Interproinvest (IPI)

    The genius inventor forgot the selector. Good work! Also, the INSAS is just a poorly made AK, and AK bullpup conversion exists since the early 1990s (Norinco Type 86S, Vector CR-21...).

    I think it's quite clear that Indian Govt needs a program through which Retd. Indian Officers & Soldiers especially from Technical-Branches are given lateral entry into AEWIL & other Defence PSUs to create a realistic connect b/w Military & defence PSUs.
    Unlike USA, India lacks a civilian firearms culture & hence it's a tall order to expect that AEWIL deisgners will be able to develop modern weapons.
    We have clearly seen ARDE & AEWIL haven't been able to produce a single Modern rifle till now, the best these organizations can do is manufacture foreign weapons under licence.

    This gun exactly look like an Ak Bullpup made few years ago in Russia.. Which isn't frequently used by the Russian military
    The iron sight looks similar to the iron sight of MP7
    Except the front iron sight which is folded in a wrong direction

    Almost every major bullpup user in the world have dumped the bullpup design for a more conventional option, for eg France, China, New Zealand , UK. a bullpup which are not designed from the ground up are even more horrible, as always we are always behing the curve.

      It's not for infantry. It's a carbine, for CQB operations and user will be like RR, special forces, NSG.
      In video Mr unnithan clearly explained the purpose of the weapon. And Israeli bullpups are still in action.

      The acquisition of tavor by the SOF was also very questionable. The thing is 4-5 MOA rifle and inaccurate beyond 300 metres. That's why they still use m4's when they need range.
      X95 is surely a far better weapon and MARCOS have already adopted them but army being army confused and delayed acquisition as always.

    A bullpup in lighter calibers is passable but in the. 308 it is not recommended. It's muzzle jump is simply uncontrollable, it's muzzle flash is very pronounced, the rate of twist of an 8 inch barrel is not meant for this cartridge. It's use is limited to short range use which can be fulfilled better by other lighter calibers. This is only an impractical weapon decorated with external furniture to impress the ignorant.
