Why did India Dump the Indigenously made INSAS Rifle??

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 12 бер 2021
  • The INSAS rifle was the pride of the Indian armed forces for decades. But on June 2017 the decision was made by the Govt of India to import foreign made rifles to replace INSAS, but why was decision??
Correction: Kargil war took place in 1999.
Information: STEYR AUG is basically a Austrian Rifle, But the one used for copying in India is made at Steyr Mannlicher, Thales Australia, Lithgow Facility.
SIG SAUER originated in Germany, but India buys these weapons from SIG SAUER,INC,USA.

@Wuhan Fried Bats Considering this its miracle that ISRO became a leading space agency in the world.
The main problem in defence PSUs is monopoly. Even in Communist USSR, there was competition between different design bureaus like MIG, Sukhoi,Antonov, Beriyev, Yokolev to submit their designs to the Govt which brings the best in them but in India for aircraft design there is just HAL.
There is a lack of intiative from every part. For example we are assembling Tatra trucks in India for a long time, but still now its LHD. No one in the BHEL came forward and said...Hey India is a RHD country, why dont we shift the steering to the right aide just like other trucks.

Yet somehow with modern manufacturing equipment and CAD, India can’t make a relatively simple rifle. Dozens of former Com Bloc and third world countries have the capability to make an AK style rifle. I feel like this goes a lot deeper than simple lack of quality control and there’s massive corruption considering the money they had to have dumped into this bottomless pit.

Interesting how institutionalized corruption was such a huge factor in the development of the INSAS. The same was also a huge factor in the US in the 1960's, when the M16/AR15 series of rifles was developed. Poor ammunition (using a ball powder that had too much calcium carbonate in it and caused a lot of fouling) along with poor maintenance and not supplying essential cleaning kits led to thousands of deaths among American servicemen in Vietnam. Some evidence seems to indicate that bureaucrats in the US defense establishment tried to sabotage the M16 by allowing these deficiencies. However, the US military along with the private sector did eventually get their act together and today the AR15 series of rifles is among the world's most reliable and accurate (and it is the rifle that perhaps has had the best combination of those two attributes for over 4 decades now).
I find it interesting that the Indian Army chose the 5.56 mm NATO round as the round of choice for the INSAS. Why not the 5.45x39 used by the Russians, especially since India has purchased so many arms and ammunition from Russia? Perhaps they felt that ammunition might be more readily obtained from NATO countries? And why then, given the 5.56 mm choice, did the Indian Army not choose to design the INSAS to use and be compatible with 5.56 mm NATO standard magazines, such as are used worldwide in AR15/M16/M4 rifles and other rifles (such as the HK416, SCAR, Tavor, etc.)? That way the INSAS could have used USGI aluminum magazines, Magpul Pmags, Lancers, or one of the many other huge varieties of 5.56 mm NATO magazines that are available. Having such versatility might have mitigated some of the issues the Indian Army had with magazine failure in cold weather and high altitude shooting.

    • @MrChickennugget360
      @MrChickennugget360 8 місяців тому

the magazine point is spot on. most malfunctioning in rifles starts with the magazines. Its odd for India to build the INSAS to use 5.56 but not be compatible with STANTAG type magazines. INSAS is interesting since its an AK type designe with a FAL type caring handle shooting NATO 5.56 rounds from a purely Indian magazine.

India should take responsibility of those death as Nepali Army was trying to Buy weapon from USA but India intervene due to 1950 treaty hence their Insas was new and they wanted someone to buy therefore they offered Nepali Army In very discounted rate then others. People in the comments section are forgetting the roots of gunsmithing.. guys you need to understnd that gunsmithing was never prevelant in India until 1940s .. even then the guns made in india were really just copies of british/austrian guns .. India as a country did not participate in any war that required mass production of guns / vehicles etc.. that is the reason why india is not the country you should be looking forward for pushing out revolutionary guns .. obv this doesnt mean that we should make horrible weapons but you have to realise what countries like russia went through before the AK was made .. or what US troops went thru before M16 was developed.. there will always be a better gun ... i actually support that India is buying AK-200 from russia since it is a top of the line assault rifle..

    • @bhaskarchoudhury9295

Its heavier coz of the caliber. One loaded mag of slr is almost equal to two insas mag, size of the slr mags are also quite big, slr is long and its a burden to carry, plus the way the piston is fitted in the slr and the gas adjuster is not practical. For your kind information R&D has been invested since a decade on basic infantry weapon and government babus couldn't design a weapon that could satisfy the requirements but private companies did it within 4 years of time. And what we get through collaboration or joint ventures is probably not the best product, example Russians gave us wherewithal to manufacture ak203s because they have ak12 and ak521s for their infantry troops and they wouldn't dare to give it's technology. All foreign companies will give their second best products. So it's far better to give chance for our own private companies.

I agree with dumping the rifle. But, did it took so many years to notice that the weapon is malfunctioning. I remember reading about this weapon in leading newspapers, that it is a cross between SLR and AK47. It's features cover the needs of our armed forces. Any product made in our arms factories will not be done as mentioned by commentators in this article. My point is it took so many years to notice and correct the fault. Gentlemen, we always fail collectively. When our PSUs can send a rocket to Mars then you think we cannot make a gun. Please, our systems are wrong, our implementation is wrong, above all our attitude is wrong. We are never one. We place everything other than merit in doing things. Merit means not reservation etc. Right person for right job. No region, religion, caste, creed, language etc. Then you see.
