- Zyprexa or olanzapine, a second generation or atypical antipsychotic drug, treats schizophrenia, mania of bipolar disorder and when combined with fluoxetine assists in treatment resistant depression.
Zyprexa belongs to the same family as Abilify, Risperdal, Seroquel, Invega, Latuda, Vraylar, Saphris, Geodon and Rexulti. The American Psychiatric Association does not recommend any one drug over another. The APA suggests these medicines should be prescribed at the lowest possible dose since all of the drugs are associated with significant and sometimes persistent side effects.
Zyprexa has been used for an ever expanding list of off label indications not authorized by the FDA or confirmed by adequate studies. Among the long list of conditions where Zyprexa is used are PTSD, Tourette Syndrome, stuttering, hyperactivity, autism and even insomnia.
For schizophrenia, Zyprexa’s results should be obvious within the first week. Lack of response by 4-6 weeks suggests failure to comply with therapy, an incorrect diagnosis or the need to switch to a pill with a different binding profile in the brain.

True info** on the drugs side affects, strengths, weaknesses, contraindications, etc. I really do appreciate your research behind the manufacturing and studies with each drug regarding FDA approval and independent studies. I just finished titration to get off Olanzapine (did it on my own between appointments with my psychiatrist), I was taking 20mg per day for almost 3 years. I feel incredible, like a lead blanket has been lifted off my mind. I decided to stop because of the side effects, it really hit me during a very emotional time in my life when I realized that I was totally numb and had no feelings over the event. It was sickening and scared me more than the weight gain. Listening to you describe all these other side effects that my doctor *never explained* really confirms that I made the right decision.

A horrible drug..side effects for me were terrible from the beginning. The restlessness , and tremors were constant , and the severe tardive dyskinesia has never gone away , even after stopping the drug "years ago" . When I stopped the drug , the withdraw was "hellish" and nearly caused me to kill myself ..even tho I tapered slowley off the drug when I stopped. It should be recalled and never b prescribed for bipolar type disorders in the first place..it was over prescribed by psychiatrists for years..it should be used only in the very rarest form if at all.. But this video was very helpful and informative , Thank you

I find the 12lb weight gain hard to believe..that should be "per month". It should be issued with survival kits, you could be adrift on a raft for 40 days and weight reported up at rescue.
exactly. I gained over 100 lbs and it completely destroyed my once athletic body. It also made me attempt to kill myself by swallowing every bottle of pills the quacks forced on me because they think that sexual violence is all just a female delusion (while statistical evidence shows we are having a national rape epidemic). I was diagnosed with borderline and I was prescribed this terrible terrible drug, this made me gain 34 kg pretty fast, plus they prescribed an extreme high dose og truxal to, I became a zombie, it eventually ruin my relationship, just find out I was misdiagnosed. It was ADHD. the diagnosed 5 years ago, at a of 38, my life has been a turmoil, self medicating at an of 15, found amfetamin to make me feel normal, at low doses, but I ended taking huge dodis for 14 years. The past is the past. I'm on methylphenidate (ritalin uno) we calibrated the dose, my life is a bliss now. Cheers from Denmark. I don't understand why any doctor would prescribe this drug for anxiety. The side effects are too many and some are quite serious. Antidepressants are an option
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is another option.
Antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and CBT don't always work. The antidepressants (alone) are especially ineffective in bipolar patients.
I ALWAYS put my zyprexa in the trash. You would have to be a fool to take that, especially long term.

Within a couple weeks my psychosis went away, but the withdrawal gave me after suddenly stopping without weening off of it was insomnia, the worst night I didn't sleep at all. Once I started taking it again I could only get bouts of sleep 2-3 at a time. Hopefully going to ween off of it and suffer no symptoms.. but it's not very predictable.
You should never go cold turkey with these meds. It can take 6mth to titrate

I have been taking resperidone 1 mg for 5 years now. My doctor says for tapering take 0.5 at night only and no need to take the 0.5 in the morning. I also take 10 mg citalopram in the morning. Is the taper to 0.5 too fast?

The only thing useful I got from any of your advice is to do cardio until you get tired enough where you think you're going to pass out running after staying up for 3 to 4 days straight just so I can go to sleep. You guys suck and you guys half-ass your advice!!!!!!
I take this along with Fluoxetine and I feel great on it. A bit groggy as a side effect, and my appetite has marginally increased but overall I'm very happy with this combination.

Thank you Dr Ken. I’ve been on Zyprexa 2.5 mg for 5 years. I have developed diabetes and weight gain and several other symptoms. I am 71 and my endocrinologist would like me to stop taking the medication. Is it alright to just stop?

It would be nice if you mentioned that antipsychotics were originally marketed as "chemical restraInts" and "chemical lobotomies". But you do seem to be more honest than most psychiatrists whi seem to be misogynists and megalomaniacs. In VT the "doctors" pass out antipsychotics like candy. We rank #6 in the country and our population is obese and disabled because of it. We have a scanty workforce so the cost of the drugs is covered by tax dollars and it is crippling the state physically and financially. We have an extremely high sexual and gender violence problem. Our rape and domestic violence stats are off the charts and the number one reason for homicide is men murdering women. The vast majority of people who seek "mental health care" are trauma survivors...generally sexual assault and often happening during childhood. So the quacks answer to that is to not even offer any counseling to heal the traumatized person but rather to tell them the trauma never happened, to gas light rape or violence survivors, and then dope them into submission with the "chemical restraints" and "chemical lobotomies". That way the "doctors" don't have to deal with their messy feelings about abuse and violence. They can just dope them into submission and compliance with their abusers. Then the victims can no longer drive a car or have any hope of independence working at a job. They can't run, defend themselves or even recognize dangers. They just lay around like an obese sickly blob taking the rapes and the beatings until they drop dead. These drugs have been proven to shorten lives from 8 to 25 years, so it would be great if you mentioned that. In my situation not only did it make me more vulnerable to abuse but it completely destroyed my life savings and my small business. I am now about to lose my home that I worked 40 years to purchase and I will be homeless. All of the personality disorders that you mentioned (caused by drugs) destroyed nearly half a century or social networks built and left me completely alone and isolated to effectively enable my abuser further. So I have no where to go and no one left to help me. It has left me with disfiguring facial tics so it is even harder to make new friends. I gained 70 lbs and 4 of my joints dislocated. I was constipated for weeks at a time and completely incontinent. And my previously fit athletic body is now disabled from the poison. I also nearly lost my eyesight completely. It made me extremely aggressive and suicidal but the doctors did not care to adjust my drugs even after I was found unresponsive from swallowing the bottles of pills they forced on me for the crime of wanting to speak to a kind understanding soul about a rape history with ongoing sexual harassment. In the middle of a rape epidemic (according to CDC and criminal justice statistics) they said "no man would ever even say something offensive to a woman!" and they called the #metoo movement unreliable and "anecdotal". No one will even speak about the sexual assault epidemic of women and children in this country because the trauma is so profitable for the pharmaceutical companies and shrinks. No one would ever want to stop that gravy train so the misogyny and abuse continues in their ghoulish disaster capitalism scheme. And it truly amazes me that after reading all of the side effects that "doctors" prescribe these drugs at all. The fact that they NEVER tell the patient of these side effects is indicative of just how much your "health care provider" truly cares about your actual health. You are simply a widget in the head shrinking factory and all they "care" to do is to make a lot of money while they shut you up and shut you down into a permanently disabled and captive customer of their big pharma masters. Run like hell from anyone who even suggests giving you any antipsychotics...AKA "chemical lobotomies"

I wish such terrible things wouldn't happen. But I can't function normally without medication. I was on no drugs when I began being depressed, then I became manic (not circumstantial, purely chemical issues).

My suggestion to you is to thoroughly research any medication that is recommended to you on Google and make an informed decision whether it is right for you.
"Atypicals ... So when do we use atypical augmentation? I think it is really valuable. I think a lot of the patients that we see with treatment-resistant depression, at least on our service, particularly in the geriatric population, have undiagnosed sort of subtle psychotic depressions. I mean we see a lot of rumination. I think Tony Rothschild taught us years ago that when you see a lot of guilt, that that may be a subtle form of psychosis, or a not so subtle form of psychosis depending on the patient. And so augmenting with an atypical which has some antidepressant - inherent antidepressant effect - but also an anti-rumination effect, can often get you over the hump in some pretty complicated patients. In terms of which one, that's complicated. I like Zyprexa, I know it has all kinds of metabolic baggage. But what's nice about Zyprexa is you can start it out, pretty much at anti-rumination dose. Five, ten miligrams tends to be pretty effective in treating rumination. Whereas with Seroquel it can take you a while to get up there. Abilify, I think patients, it has a very good antidepressant quality but ... it also has a lot of EPS. We see a lot of patients get very agitated with Abilify. And I have seen two of the worst cases of TD, in the last ten years, were with Abilify, and they did not get better when the Abilify was removed. So I think you have to be a little bit careful with that drug. But, it is, obviously it has the most data, it has the FDA indication, so it has the most positive randomized controlled data."

"Treatment" = Medication. In other words; it's NOT "Treatment-Resistant". It's MEDICATION-RESISTANT!!!!! Psychotherapy is also treatment. When some1 becomes "psychotherapy-resistant"; then "treatment-resistant" is an appropriate term. As 4 psych meds; "treatment-resistant" is very oxymoronic.

They're both "pine" atypicals. Only really difference is zyprexa is high potency. Seroquel is low potency. 7.5 milligrams of zyprexa could have similar successful results as seroquel 400-600 mgs. I thought they were both highly sedating. Seroquel a little more for me though. I hate that shit. Was on 800 mgs.

It helped me with insomnia Xanax and valium would barely work on me, I got it prescribed for anxiety and insomnia it's still early days but it keeps me asleep unlike others.

Since my last hospitalization 2 years ago I'm on Olanzapine, keeping a strict diet, I'm finally now in remission and physically fit.

@@HJS17 I was one year on 10mg which was later gradually reduced to 5 mg, occasionally I was confused due to lack of concentration and mild cognitive impairment.

Honestly, I have some understanding of the topic. The thumbnail seemed to elicit the deceivingly (like it tries to be lighthearted but unbenownst to itself it doesn't know what it's talking about) PSA vibe. I thought to myself "The PSA vibe is funny. I know a little about the topic. I could know a little more. Maybe if I hold the funny PSA vibe I can get through a short understated video about the topic. I start watching and after like 10 seconds the guy starts Delving. and then Delving and then Delving. Was kind of weird. Was not what I was expecting. I could only get through 2:28 of the video because I felt like I was doing a bad job at watching.
Zyprexa: Worst. Drug. Ever.
I was put on Saphris to help me sleep. I had been suffering from ongoing insomnia. it helped me sleep and i was happy - for a year. Then the most horrific thing occurred. I developed an involuntary movement disorder. My psychiatrist told me it was Parkinsonism, and explained that it was a condition that mimicked all the side effect of Parkinsonism. She told me it would never go away; that i would have to learn to live with it etc... I looked into places that I could move into as i didn't want my daughter and husband to be my carers. I live in Australia, and all i could find were nursing homes for old people.
The bizarre thing was that my movements did not seem to match Parkinsonism. They were wild and round and I felt as if a demon stallion or bull had taken over my body. I had a huge amount of energy but i could not direct it in any way. it was directing my body and i could not stop it. I went to a neurologist. He said straight away 'you do not have Parkinsonism'. He had a full MRI of my brain done. There was nothing wrong with it. in fact, he said it was the most perfect brain he'd seen in years.
My dad is a retired neurosurgeon and he organised a whole lot of specialists - i have been in hospital for an entire year. It seems that the movements are finally beginning to settle. I have had a few days with no strange movements at all. It seems that I am one of the few lucky ones. Most people who develop involuntary movement disorders have them for life.

Zyprexa and lithium are a great combo for me when specifically used to reset my brain after a manic episode leads into what I call, “avalanching”. In the general course of my BPD cannabinoids like THC and CBD are plenty though.

I had to take 20 mg Zyprexa because of psychosis. And it went down to 2,5 mg within a year. What is your experience. How do you do?

They prescribe it for anything. Good luck trying to come off of them. Don't cold-turkey it, cold-turkey causes brain damage and can cause psychosis that can result in schizophrenia. It needs to be tapered down slowly over months or years. It's worse than heroin to come off for some people.

I absolutely love taking this off-label for insomnia. There comes a point where I've had 6-7 sleepless nights and the paranoia/anger/anxiety is sky high. I think of this as a very good drug for severe depression and on an as-needed basis.

@@corymodzeleski7191 FDA just approved Samidorphan as an add-on to Zyprexa. It is supposed to prevent weight gain while on Zyprexa.
In regard to sedation and numbness, did you try guanfacine together with Zyprexa? Or atomoxetine? Or modafinil? Or Adderall?
@@Burevestnik9M730 Insurance stopped paying for Guanfacine before I got on Zyprexa and I can no longer afford it. Modafinil and Adderall they will not prescribe me. Is Atomoxetine the generic brand of Strattera? I was on the generic brand of Strattera for a couple of months but it was before I was on Zyprexa. It made me really sleepy too, like most medications I've been on.

I think the message is not that all drugs are bad, but more that we aren't often told of all the things we should know about them, especially by the companies which make and sell them. Here is where we learn of that part. The simpler drugs which directly affect the problem have probably all been invented by now. What we have left are complex ones which may cause the wanted changes through mechanisms which are not closely related to the problem, so those can affect many different things in the process. A drug which is problem-free for me might cause you trouble because of our personal differences, and to me it seems that almost nobody looks into that deeply enough- but we get that news here.

My psychiatrist is trying to prescribe this to me for panic disorder and I'm not taking it. There's no way I am, I'm depressed because I have panic disorder that's untreated, antidepressants and antipsychotics just make me numb and feel crazier which proves that I don't have regular depression,
Works well as support for Zoloft (sertraline) in dose of 5 miligrams at bedtime. Also works well with smal dose (up to 100 mg) of tramadol- under supervision of doctor.
EDIT 11.2022.: Still use 5 mg at bedtime , with 100 mg tramadol. Works well for me. Important: Exercise to avoid weight gain.
bullshit! don't use an antipsychotic to cure anxiety, depression or sleep disorders. You will destroy your brain. It has been long known that doctors have been pushing these drugs such as olanzapine to treat other symptoms besides psychoses so that these drug companies can make money. These drugs don't cure you but rather sedate you. And the side effects are often worse than your original problem.
