I've had anxiety and severe insomnia for years. Ended up addicted to benzos but Zoloft+Remeron has been a life changer. Drastically reduced my Xanax intake and currently working my way down to 0.
I don't want to sound overly dramatic, but I swear that discovering about, and taking, this drug has been one of the most important life-changing things I've ever done in my life. I went from like 10-20min of REM sleep for YEARS to literally 2 hours per night. I don't have any side-effects, and I don't feel groggy or weird. I think I just got so used to feeling in a fog from years and years of exhaustion. I only take 3.75mg, which is half of the lowest kiddie dose 7.5mg and I am out within an hour or two. It doesn't seem to disrupt sleep architecture in a negative way, it feels like it improves natural sleep. After 2-3 days of starting this, it was the first time in like a decade or more that I didn't feel tired. It's been a miracle. Thanks for the in-depth video!
Have you gained any weight from it? My Dr just prescribed it to me for insomnia (7.5mg at bedtime) and I’m hesitating to take it because of the weight gain side effect that seems to plague so many that take it. I took it a couple of nights and the next morning I felt like a Mac truck had ran over me 😮
Thank you doctor. You seem genuinely passionate about explaining our medication to us. It might feel like you’re just making videos for whoever to watch but we really do appreciate it thank you
I'm on mirtazipine too on 30 mg and lately I been taking tiny bites of 1 pill through out the day and it really helps out , helping me feel more better and less depressed and anxious

It's crazy how polarized the view on these drugs is. Some people swear by them, others go out of their way to condemn them. It's a shame because people considering these drugs are most likely terrified of these subjective anecdotal reviews. I know I am.
I 100% feel the same. Its so so difficult to take new medication when feeling depressed and hearing all the conflicting reports on it, it basically becomes impossible to commit. All we want to do is get better but it's so terrifying trying to decide what's best for us.
Couldn't agree more. I've been given these just today by my doc and I've spent the evening on the Internet reading reviews. I'm scared to start them now
Littalwabbit - Sometimes there is a good reason to be scared. I wish someone had told me how difficult and painful it can be to try to get off mirtazapine. I never would have taken it.
I have bipolar type 1. I take zyprexa (olanzapine) and zoloft (sertraline), and recently mirtazapine. My life has done nothing but improve since taking Mirtazapine. This medication can be applied to bipolar treatment so long as you're on a mood stabiliser or antipsychotic.
Certainly am. I'm doing a lot more activities, and finally have a normal life because I'm not looking at life through the filter of depression. I have held a job for a long time and yes you're right. The antipsychotic or mood stabilizer prevents mania. However I think it's only a risk of mania when you first start taking it. I finally have my life back. I'm driving cars, have a wholesome relationship and actually have energy now thanks to this medication. I think the mirtazapine only increased the serotonergic behaviour, once bipolar people adjust to taking it, we're fine :)
You are a great man! This medicine began helping me after about 25 days at 30 mg. I've been suffering with depression, insomnia, and physical pain from Fibromyalgia. I've been watching most of your videos for years now and I've learned more from you than any doctor. I am so greatful and I appreciate your knowledge and respect you so much. I do believe you have changed my life as I am no longer suicidal, I was able to sleep last night and I woke up feeling like a new person. I was SSRI intolerant and I could not tolerate any medication all my life till now. At first this medication did cause some side effects but I just kept taking them as I had no other hope of help. I feel as though my life just changed overnight. What a father's day gift this is. I wish I could shake your hand and thank you. The very best to you doctor I will forever be thankful to you.
Wow. I also have cptsd with insomnia and depression anxiety etc. I have tries countless ssria and snris and none have worked. She has had lethargy, heightened anxiety, panic, nausea, loss of appetite, flu like symptoms (aches and pains, generally feeling unwell) Hope this answers your question and gives you some idea of what to expect.
Yup very helpful thanks! I hope you don’t mind asking more questions: - What was the dose she was on mostly? - Does she still experience any of the withdrawal symptoms after stopping her meds for 3 months or so?
I was on Mirtazapine for 5 years, I can't say with a definite surety but I had very negative effects I can definitely tie to the drug. For me the side effects outweigh any beneficial clinical affect. I stayed on it for the length of time I did because I had tried at least Seven or eight different antidepressants.
Mental fog, and a whole new type of anxiety, at least for me. I also had sleep issues from very odd dreams to being incredibly tired and not being able to sleep. For me it's a real long list from moderate to severe in range of side effects. It is not something you can know and then you just avoid the medication because the side effects you MIGHT HAVE ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM PERSON TO PERSON. BUT DOING YOUR OWN RESEARCH IS VERY IMPORTANT AND SMART BECAUSE IT WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS! I HOPE THAT HELPS!

When I was taking this it really helped with sleep which was such a relief. I did put on a huge amount of weight as it caused massive cravings for carbs but I lost this weight once I stopped taking it. I didn’t have anything serious in terms of withdrawal unlike when I was taking Paxil/Seroxat (paroxetine). I was prescribed this as an appetite stimulant but it didn't work, I later found out it hasn't been found to have stimulated appetite in people who aren't depressed. I wish I had been told this earlier
I've been taking Mirtazapine 30mg for 12 years. Prescribed them due to insomnia. They usually work, but I take a Zopiclone occasionally too. The only side effect I experience is dry mouth, which is trivial.
Mirtazipine is also a muscarinic receptor antagonist, which when taken long term is shown to raise the chances of early onset dementia and alzheimers disease. Muscarinic receptor antagonists are known to also cause hot and cold flashes, delirium, brain fog, fatigue, dry mouth, dehydration, vertigo, Parkinson's disease and brain damage if taken for a long period of time. This is why antihistamines like benadryl, promethazine, and doxylamine are so dangerous as they work in the same manner, I really think that this should be mentioned, for a lot of people it could make depression worse. It's not a very safe drug even though it's been approved by the fda.
I sure as heck feel like I have dementia if I’m even able to wake up at all. There’s a reason this med has been eclipsed. I’ve only taken it once so far & don’t feel like being in a coma the next 1-2 weeks hoping those side effects go away. Awful
@@fistwood Yes. I have a couple sources, as well as general knowledge about muscarinic receptor antagonists and they all behave similarly. www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2016/020415s030lbl.pdf www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383251/ www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/two-types-of-drugs-you-may-want-to-avoid-for-the-sake-of-your-brain Muscarinic Receptor antagonists are a group of drugs that help with allergies, things like promethazine, doxylamine, diphenhydramine, mirtazapine, atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscamine just to name a few. Some do exibit serotonergic effects, however they all exibit anticholinergic effects. Anticholinergic effects can be desireable in some cases, however, even in these cases, its still doing damage to your brain. Anticholinergic substances are linked to early onset dementia, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle control, parkinsons disease due to dopamine suppression, restless leg symdrome, dry mouth, depression, anxiety, cardiotoxic effects, and more. Doesnt sound worth the risk for its reletivly low success rate if you ask me. I've experienced anticholinergic toxcisity a couple times myself and its not pleasant, most poisons are actually antichollinergics. So i would be careful.
@Smatt All my sources say the anticholinergic properties are moderately strong, if youd like to provide info on this, I'll gladly look through it. Honestly even if it isnt a very potent anticholinergic, it still is one, prolonged use leads to inhibition of certain enzymes like with most anticholinergics, slowing the metabolism of this substance, so it does build up eventually. Even if you dont feel it effecting you. If a whole community is dedicated to taking it recreationally for its deliriant effects, it's likely potent enough to cause some damage, even weak anticholinergics like chlorpheniramine and brompheniramine have some toxic anticholinergic effects even though they're generally no where near the potency of stronger ones. It is a weak inhibitor of the CYP1A2, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4, these are all responsible for metabolism of mirtazipine and its metabolites. Its half life is also 20-40 hours, so when you take your next dose, you still have a good deal of the drug in your system. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirtazapine#Pharmacokinetics pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10885584/
@Smatt that study was conducted in 1995, one year before mirtazipine was fda approved and it was only available in the Netherlands for one year prior to this article being published. I don't want to sit here and argue, yes it is probably not the most potent anticholinergic substance out there, but you still cant deny that it does have some anticholinergic effects, which generally speaking isnt good. Where do you think its sedative effects come from? Its serotonin antagonism? Or its adrenergic effects? You tell me
He did leave out one crucial fact that you should be aware of though, Mirtazapine is an antichollinergic substance meaning it lowers acetylcholine levels in the brain and throughout the body. Acetylcholine is one of the most essential compounds to us as humans, it regluates sleep, histamine production, memory, visual preception, mood, and more. This is bad in the case of mirtazapine because you want to have acetylcholine, but mirtazapine being a muscarinic receptor antagonist blocks our body from producing normal levels of acetylcholine. Side effects of antichollinergic use include, dry mouth, hot and cold flashes, depression, anxiety, early onset dementia, alzhimers, delirium, psychosis, intoxication, brain fog, insomnia, narcolepsy, and parkinsons disease due to dopamine suppression caused by antichollinergics. www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2016/020415s030lbl.pdf www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383251/ www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/two-types-of-drugs-you-may-want-to-avoid-for-the-sake-of-your-brain I encourage you to read these articles if you really want to know what this drug can do, check this website out www.erowid.org/pharms/mirtazapine/
Great sources and references. Nevertheless, Mirtazipine is outrageously being prescribed like Aspirin. What can you say about it. Big Pharma. Beat It. “ Not a controlled substance”. Yet it’s as strong as Valium/Xanax in my opinion. Makes you sleepy as literally hell.
@@hicko92 Yes I agree, this guys channel does seem to be more informative than most channels, but on occasion, stuff does get left out. I was put on Effexor plus a mood stabilizer for unipolar depression. As a result I ended up being described by family members as a zombie for ten years. I also had insomnia for this period and as a result entered my sixties with memory problems. During this period I cared for both parents with dementia. I came off the mood stabilizer to find myself terrified the memory problems were an indicator of having dementia myself. I was prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg daily back in September 2019 for my depression. The sleep I had on it was incredible, I’d fall asleep 20 to 30 minutes after taking the medication. Only trouble would be waking up, I’d find it rather hard to wake up because the sleep was so deep. I did find myself getting slightly hungrier on the medication, having the occasional late night snack but no weight gain. I met with a therapist while I was on the medication to talk about my depression and she was shocked when I told her I was on the medication, worrying about the ‘weight gain’ side effects. I never went back to that therapist lol I’ve slowly tried to stop the medication as I want to prove to myself that I can sleep without but my success has been varied
I put 40 lbs on mirtazapine 15 after just a few months. Didn't even change my diet or eat any differently despite craving sugar (I even weigh my food since I have a restricted diet). @@jack-nq7vroh wow good to know I’ve heard horror stories about withdrawals I’m on night 2 of 15mg Did you gain weight? I have anxiety panic attacks depression insomnia etc Was sleep talking last night I record myself on my phone at night
I’ve just started by halving a 30 to 15 now have broken the 15 into half although one half always different size but around 7. Hopefully this will help me get off these things.

Awful

www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/two-types-of-drugs-you-may-want-to-avoid-for-the-sake-of-your-brain
Muscarinic Receptor antagonists are a group of drugs that help with allergies, things like promethazine, doxylamine, diphenhydramine, mirtazapine, atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscamine just to name a few.
Its half life is also 20-40 hours, so when you take your next dose, you still have a good deal of the drug in your system.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirtazapine#Pharmacokinetics
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10885584/
@Smatt that study was conducted in 1995, one year before mirtazipine was fda approved and it was only available in the Netherlands for one year prior to this article being published. I don't want to sit here and argue, yes it is probably not the most potent anticholinergic substance out there, but you still cant deny that it does have some anticholinergic effects, which generally speaking isnt good. Where do you think its sedative effects come from? Its serotonin antagonism? Or its adrenergic effects? You tell me
Thanks for such a great informative video!
Great informative video. Covered pretty much all the aspects and specifications of Remeron.

WARNING: Mirt or Remeron destroyed my ability to sleep. While on it, I took Ativan to sleep occasionally. After 18 months on it, was cold turkeyed off it and the sleep issues resolved three days later. But then six months later, another bout of no sleep...i fall asleep every few minutes but wake up the second I go under, then jolt awake either from not breathing or from the electricity in my brain (possibly adrenaline rush?) Eight years off Remeron, and seven years off Ativan and still having severe bouts of insomnia for several days every month or so.
Could be sleep apnea if you stop breathing your body will jolt you awake
@@elijahdungan3612 Tested twice, two sleep studies said I don't have sleep apnea. It's akathisia in the brain, nervous system.
@tyrel prescribed Ativan for insomnia caused by menopause. No I am not healed. I cannot live a normal life. Most days are a real struggle...so much weird pain, brain zaps, unbelievable bouts of paranoia and irrational fears. I used to be smart and normal prior to Ativan.
@tyrel left work in 2012. Still can't work. I sleep enough 2-3 nights per week.
@tyrel every semblance of normalcy was taken from me with the first 80 mg of Ativan taken over 2 years. I only took it occasionally and still ended up in protracted support groups. My last long spell of normalcy was ten days in January 2020. It's been a real life nightmare that everyone finds hard to believe except others harmed by benzos. If you're not in a support group, find one, please.
YESSSSSSSSS I JUST WATCHEED THIS VID EXPECTING TO NOT WANNA TAKE IT BECAUSE ALL THE OTHER DRUGS HAVE SHITTY SIDE EFFECTS ESPECIALLY ED. IM GOING TO REALLY GIVE THIS ONE A GO PLUS I HAVE DEPRESSION INSOMNIA AND IM UNDERWEIGHT. THANKYOUUUUUUUU
It was absolutely awful the panic attacks and sweating and feelings of dread.
@@maybenotsure5380 holy shit, I have really bad insomnia and depression and I just had a really bad experience on quetiapine (heart palpitations, SUPER dizzy, nearly passing out, feeling sick to my stomach) after having these effects I decided to look into medications so much more and thousands of other people have had what I went through, the feeling of dread/panic attacks sound similar to this, my doctor has just recommended mirtazapine to me so I've looked it up, if there is so much as a chance of anything CLOSE to what I went through I'm not going near it. I just need something to help me sleep when I have work the next day. Not one single doctor has been able to be honest with me and talk to me about helping me fall asleep they never speak about these experiences. they want to prescribe me things that have affects on other aspects and not something that helps me sleep, I've lost jobs to this sleep issue and I feel like I will lose my current one too if this keeps happening, it can take me up to 6 hours to fall asleep and if I need to wake up at 5 in the morning it's just not possible like that. I guess my question is, when you started this medication did you have negative effects like the ones I experienced? seeing you reply to YOUR OWN comment about how awful it was has made me even more sceptical about taking it which is a good thing I think.

@@hypnotherapist2211 it was horrible. I was on it for 5 1/2 months suffered horrible side effects. I was told to wait 6 to 8 weeks and the side effects should subside, but they never subsided at which point my doctor decided that I was on too long of a dose, and we need to increase it which only increased the side effects. I honestly after this experience don’t think I will ever try another antidepressant when I went in for my 5 1/2 month visit. My blood pressure was so high that my doctor cold turkey took me off of it. I did another two months of absolute suffering. I’m still not right. i've been taking it for 7 years. it revitalized my appetite and helped treat my depression at first but i think it might've caused me to develop a facial tic
I’ve just been prescribed this. I’m terrified of weight gain though.
How are you getting on with it? Drs started me on it yesterday. Slept amazingly but had vivid dreams and feel spacey and tiered today but apparently this settles after a few weeks. I wouldn’t be too worried about weight gain as I’m on pain meds that can cause the same and really increase your appetite, I just make sure I don’t go over the amount of calories my body needs and manage to keep the weight off that way.
How you doing on them Greg?
I hope it’s all going well for you. My experience with this medication was all good except for the huge weight gain over 4 years on this medication 45kg horrible. I hope you don’t go through anything like this. Good health to you and thanks for sharing

I was on Mirtazepine. It helped some for insomnia. The big, intolerable side effect was sexual disfunction, ed and anti orgasmic. Love and sex are too important for happiness so I had to ween off the drug slowly.

I had pretty much ALL of the adverse reactions to mirtazapine. The first real nausea inducing migraine I've ever had, my tinnitis got dialed to 11, and I felt like my mind was a rag doll being thrown around by an angry child, and for 24 long hours, every 15 minutes like clockwork, my mood would totally collapse into crying catatonic mess. The only thing I didn't do is go blind.
It's amazing how different people react to Mirtazapine. I've had virtually no adverse effects to it. It's worked brillint for me, I hope they manage to find a AD which works for you.
What dose were you on? Is worsening tinnitus a side effect?

I have daytime anxiety so I’m taking half in the morning and half in the afternoon as I have panicked attacks
And 15mg at night for sleep
I’m depressed anxious insomnia etc
Would u recommend Seroquel instead for daytime anxiety?
I was prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg daily back in September 2019 for my depression.
The sleep I had on it was incredible, I’d fall asleep 20 to 30 minutes after taking the medication. Only trouble would be waking up, I’d find it rather hard to wake up because the sleep was so deep. I did find myself getting slightly hungrier on the medication, having the occasional late night snack but no weight gain.
I met with a therapist while I was on the medication to talk about my depression and she was shocked when I told her I was on the medication, worrying about the ‘weight gain’ side effects. I never went back to that therapist lol
I’ve slowly tried to stop the medication as I want to prove to myself that I can sleep without but my success has been varied
I put 40 lbs on mirtazapine 15 after just a few months. Didn't even change my diet or eat any differently despite craving sugar (I even weigh my food since I have a restricted diet). Mirtazapine is the AD which causes the most weight gain, there are several studies proving it and that agrees with my Dr's experience as well. You're lucky not to have this side effect.
