Hydroxyzine

  • Опубліковано 5 лип 2020
  • Hydroxyzine will be prescribed more than 7 million times this year. Originally known as Atarax and Vistaril, hydroxyzine is an antihistamine in the same family as Benadryl or diphenhydramine. Unlike the newer non-sedating antihistamines, hydroxyzine readily passes into the brain and causes sleepiness.
Hydroxyzine remains available by prescription only. It assists in treatment of a veritable menu of conditions ranging from allergies to itch and motion sickness to anxiety. Hydroxyzine provides sedation and may be useful as a non-addictive sleeping pill. It may also boost the analgesic effect of opioids.
Side effects associated with hydroxyzine appear similar to the other antihistamines. Recent concerns in Europe suggest some individuals appear susceptible to electrocardiographic abnormalities that may lead to cardiac arrhythmias. For this reason the EMA, the European equivalent of the FDA, suggests as low a dose as possible for as short a period as feasible. Those concerns do not seem to be mirrored in the United States.
Due to hydroxyzine’s likelihood of causing sedation, caution seems appropriate when engaging in any activities that require mental alertness. It might pose a danger to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy equipment while under the effects of the drug. The half life of hydroxyzine rises from 14 hours in an adult to nearly 30 hours in senior citizens.
One of the metabolic by-products of hydroxyzine is cetirizine. This later compound is the generic of Zyrtec, a popular non-sedating antihistamine. Interestingly of all of the non-sedating antihistamines, Zyrtec seems most likely to cross into the central nervous system and promote sleepiness.

I have severe allergies and this works really good for hives....and anxiety. It makes you really slow down after about an hour and and half after you take it. Be prepared to either take a nap or try to fight it the best you can by keeping active. I've been using it off and on for years and it still has the same effect on me. I only take as needed... meaning only when I am covered in hives and can't stand the itchiness anymore. It works almost right away for allergies.

I’ve never seen the benefit of this drug for anxiety...I wish I did. The doctors are running from benzos even for those who need it. I’m hoping drugs like this that work for some people can help us tackle anxiety regularly. This is such a debilitating disease and to know it CAN be treated, but that we haven’t found a class of medications in which the benefits outweigh the risks, is just sad. I hope we figure this out in my lifetime, but I’m not holding my breath. Regardless, thanks for the videos. I always consult your lectures before initiating a medication

So I am an alcoholic who is weaning off alcohol. I can't stop completely because it causes massive anxiety issues and can be dangerous. I told the doctor I cannot have any type of narcotic, but I need something to help control the anxiety and some other symptoms. They prescribed this to me and it has worked wonders. First couple of days it caused me to be quite sleepy, but after a while it just kinda... calms me down. I am super happy they went with this medicine to help me go through what I'm doing. So far I'm down to about half the amount of alcohol I drink and I regularly just don't want to drink (thank god). The loss of concentration is real, but it isn't anything crazy. Seems that the first few days are when the symptoms are the most common.

Hey there.... just a tip from me. I was prescribed Doxepin for depression and trouble sleeping. I was on it about 10 years. Meanwhile I thought maybe I could do without the doxepin. Doc had me taper off and was ok at first but then I got this really awful sensitivity to touch. It would start as an itch that would turn into a very painful burning itch. Even a slight touch could set it off. I tried about 2 months and had to go back on. Later another doctor changed it to hydroxyzine. It works well for me. I don't know if I had an unusual reaction coming off the doxepin but it was torture. Thanks for this good lesson.... I learned from you and it's the first time I've come across you.

Woke up from a long sleep. He yawned, stretched, and at last opened his eyes completely. For two minutes, however, he lay in his bed without moving, as though he were not yet quite certain whether he were awake or still asleep, whether all that was going on around him were real and actual, or the continuation of his confused dreams.

As someone who suffers from restless leg syndrome, Hydroxyzine probably will set the legs off. It sets mine off whenever I take it which is why I cut each pill in half and take only half a dose.

I Just Subscribed ! Very Educational Videos , I Have unilateral tinnitus in my left ear since early Past Dec , 2021. I've Been To My Primary Dr. , Then ENT , Also An Audiologist . Right Ear Normal , left Ear low Pitch Normal , High Pitch Very Poor , Either Euatchian Tube Dysfuction Or Damage From loud Music , Carpentry Saws , Sinus Infections , Age Related Or hereditary Tinnitus . I wonder if there's any medication that could quiet or tame down tinnitus . All of my doctors say there's nothing They Cauld Do , I have to live with it for the rest of my life , it sounds like a jet engine in my left ear.I Was Wandering If There Is Something Prescribed That Can Tame My Tinnitus Down , Or Cure It .

I’ve been on a handful of anxiety meds in my life and hydroxyzine does the absolute least for me. Zoloft made me throw up, buspar made me twitchy, lexapro made me aggressive and twitchy, and hydroxyzine no matter what dosage I fall asleep in about half an hour and that isn’t an answer for anxiety that just makes me not want to take it.

    • @christieleigh7728

Agreed. This is a sleeping pill for me… I wasn’t anxious because I was asleep. Not the answer.

Take it right before bed and hydroxyzine works amazing! Obviously you need to sleep. If you can’t/refuse to fall asleep, then you have psychiatric issues that go beyond anxiety, bro.

Was just prescribed 50mg a day for sleep aid, and the results are in, I took 1/4 of a pill soon as I got them, didn't notice much and then I took the rest few hours later, was knocked out for a sold 10 hrs and woke up feeling pretty good. My opinion is cut these into what you're comfortable with, so you may have to take one to know what you can tolerate or how much sleep you want, but yes they will put you in la la land.

My doc prescribed me 50mg tabs for anxiety/insomnia, but after a couple doses, I think I might need a lower dose, maybe 25mg. I take it at night before bed and it is effective, but I still feel very groggy for the first 2-3 hours in the morning and I can't have that. I need to wake up feeling energized so I can work out and get on with my day, but the last thing I want to do is work out when I wake up on this stuff. It saps my motivation.

This medicaiton helps a lot for people prescribed opiate pain medication, or people on MAT programs. It helps with itching, and anxiety brought on by the medication. It calms me down like a benzo but makes me a little sleepy sometimes. But its a much better every day medication then any benzo because there so hard to get off.

  • @twistedinnocence8617

It helps a little for anxiety but it's no substitute for Benzos for relief. It won't stop a panic attack if you have one.

Which one is better for sleep also considering sideefects. Atarax benadryl or doxylamin?

    • @jboss729

Hydroxyzine is FAR more sedating than either benadryl or doxylamine. Second for sedation would be doxylamine then benadryl.
