I still can't get over the fact that Mike happened to pick "scared of horses" as a character trait without knowing what the reveal would be. Just so perfect.
Genuinely when he growled 'horses' after the reveal I absolutely lost it.
Andy didnt overplan, he was professionally prepared, and made it a great game to watch.
There's definitely a tricky balancing act to over-planning vs. improvising everything when running a TTRPG; I definitely fall into the over-planner stereotype, but I try to make sure I can always reuse things later if the players don't take the bait.
@@haravikk I tried running 5 games, and I was definitely underplanned, and I felt it.
@@jamesrichards2720 Yeah, I'm not so good at improvising as a DM (weirdly better at it as a player).
NPCs are especially hard; I have dozens prepared for shopkeepers etc., with just enough specific detail so I can make them a bit interesting, but the exact shop they're running and the location become canon only when I actually need them.
At least that's the idea; one NPC was only supposed to tell a player where they needed to go next and ended up being dragged into mortal peril in the sewers after the player rolled four 20+ rolls (with bonus) in a row to keep convincing him. Now he's a key NPC, was supposed to just be helpful informant for session one.
But that's part of the fun!
I mean the backstories he might not have needed for the other dullest but everything else made sense to prepare
It was Andy's first time running a game at least for a public audience. He made the right call, the campaign felt good.
I just realized, each of the party avoided the nature of the horsemen Victoria assigned them in their individual battles.
Silas makes a mockery of the duel by shooting Bellows in the dick, avoiding the ruthlessness of War.
Nate overpowers his possession by refusing to bring Death to someone.
Delacey's part in his dual encounter with Nate is him surrendering and not fighting back, the antithesis of Conquest.
Edie refuses to cling to the fading memory of her brother when she realizes it isn't him, ending the fight quickly rather than pretend for a while. (She was a stretch for Pestilence anyway)
And Garnet ignored the absence of magic and fought straight-on with her gun, even though she had a way to refill it. Victoria had assigned her Famine because of a perceived obsession with that magic.
It obviously wasn't intentional, but it's still a cool narrative perspective I thought of.
That was very insightful thank you. I never thought of it that way.

I'd have switched jane and Ellen's character oppositions tbh: garnet's "infected" with demonic powers and edie's "hungry" to avenge her brother's death
so far this series was a success with 4 raises.
Andy keeping Nate "alive" instead of dying to a heart attack I think shows he's a natural in making a well fleshed out story/characters.
Nate's flesh definitely turned out by the end of it, too.
"Canon crime, the next thing up from gun crime" had me in shambles 🤣🤣
It took me a second and then it killed me.

Andy had about half a dozen stellar characters for the universe. I think he really outdid himself with the characterization of his NPCs and his world building. Great job, mate!

Loving this Q and A and breakdown after the session, would be great to see more after each season of Oxventure/Blades and other series that might come up
They really should do a season two with the series it was so good. Not sure how they would do a season two but I'm sure they could figure it out

@@samward7539 Maybe they can't kill the Horseman, they can only destroy the body and the power flows out into the world and eventually (like 100 years) coaleses into a new horseman. Maybe they are trying to reforge rings to lock away the horseman behind 7 seals (for fun)
Andy, for a 1st time GM, you did good. And while they say “oh the worst thing is over-preparing!” A) they never define what extent is over-preparing. B) it is better that you have things that you do not use this time that can use elsewhere
Also good on you Luke for Roleplaying well and NOT looking at the sessions you were not a part and not looking at fan theories
I'm surprised that some of them at least looked at the theories. I could understand watching the other sessions but if know know what's happening it's harder to predend you don't have an idea

You know what would be fun? A meta-narrative. Maybe the Oxventure or Blades characters are actually playing Deadlands, and we get the Deadlands characters through the eyes of those other characters. If it's just a one-shot, it could be a chance to try it with few or no lasting consequences.

So good. I love the intersection of wild west and horror in Andy's cultural references. Love the hospital being In the Mouth of Madness. Missed Harker being Croneberg in Nightbreed, but that is such a choice reference
I did not spot the four horsemen story line and found that an extremely satisfying twist at the end. Well played Andy!
I'm so glad I picked up on the Carousel of Progress from Disneyland reference at the World's Fair. I honestly only knew about that ride from watching a Fascinating Horror vid on the accident that happened with that one. Given how much Disney stuff Andy knows, particularly with the Haunted Mansion ride, I'm not surprised that he pulled in another reference.
I love that Johnny knows everyone so well to know that they'll all choose the worst option. I'm sometimes that way when gaming. I'll sort of just shrug and go for it even though I know it's a stupid idea.
Mike having Silas be afraid of horse just made sense to me given his love of cars and what all happened when he, Jane, and Andy had that race in Red Dead Online for a Christmas challenge and just how badly it went for Mike (and how much he complained about the horses).
Well as we all know, “Horses are dangerous at both ends, and crafty in the middle.”
Andy absolutely crushed it this season. Many of the NPCs were brought to life by his performances and the story was top notch. I've got a few thoughts on this series:
- I think we could get new seasons, but instead of being one continuous story, each season is a self contained narrative. This season was about the tragedy of Victoria's story. Scaling it up to finding her boss would make her a step along the way and risk the story being less personal. At the same time, the apocalypse has just been stopped, so how do you scale it down successfully with the same characters. The story of this season serves best as an isolated narrative, rather than the beginning of a series like their D&D adventures
- In hindsight, I probably did notice that the hollowing was intentional and just chose not to believe it. The belief that it was legit really amped up the stakes of the series. While I love the D&D series, it rarely feels like the characters are in danger of having long-term consequences for their actions (Prudence briefly losing magic being one of the exceptions).
- I'm probably in the minority, but I didn't connect the Four-Horsemen thing until the final episode. I don't think that's a bad thing either. It made the final episode more of an "Ah-ha!" moment in my opinion, and I loved it.
Honestly, I would love these same characters to come back, but kind of just wander around the West with no overarching narrative. Hunters for Hire: An Oxventure Deadlands Anthology, something like that.
I thoroughly enjoy these aftermath, Q and A videos or d&d leveling up videos.
This campaign was brilliant. It really took over as my top comfort piece of fiction and as a non-player, it felt so balanced between tense excitement and powerful glory.
I watched The Unforgiven, The Quick and the Dead and Tombstone because of this series and I'm glad I did. Thanks Andy!
You need to give the Dollars Trilogy a watch. Especially “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. Lone Plains Drifter is also really good, and a lil bit spooky.

Love Deadlands and loved the Oxventure spin on it so I'm really hoping we get to see more either with these characters or with others.
Knowing what we do now about the 4 horsemen angle, I’m impressed Andy resisted dropping in the likes of ‘What’s causin’ all this?’ or ‘Being a Horseman isn’t something you put on in the morning and take off at night, it’s a state of mind.’ 😂
Loved this Q&A and the campaign itself!
Prepping for my Deadlands campaign all those years ago, I was inspired by the original Red Dead Redemption, but I also watched so many westerns to get in the mood: The Magnificent Seven, The Quick and the Dead, Silverado ... but my best memory is watching The Wild Bunch in the middle of a massive thunderstorm. Rain was pouring down, lightning was flashing constantly and eventually a transformer across the street exploded causing all the power to go out!
It drove me to write a bit where the posse was hunkered down in a saloon during a similarly powerful storm and besieged by monstrous creatures. You could almost smell the rain and feel the wet on your skin.
I'm not even that much of a Western fan, but that scenario sounds _so cool._
I’ve been in and out of commenting up to speed; but I’ve watched this series, and all the Oxventures in recent weeks while I try and get back up. From the horsemen to the orbpocalypse the beauty of it has been seeing aspects of self come through in characters curated to bring joy. Mike loves humour, Luke loves heart, and everyone brings their own flavour to the table and world being curated.
Also love that Jane loves my favourite western. Doc Holliday is my huckleberry. 🙌
The comments under the last episode had a few people point out that the posse could have taken the rings and then just not done the apocalypse. I wonder if Andy had planned for that, and if that would have been possible, or if he would have made them become the Horsemen (however railroad-y that seems), or if there would have been some kind of corruption they would have had to endure/fight off to keep the apocalypse at bay.

Johnny saying that they don't need to plan an alternate choice because the Oxventurers allways choose the worst possibility made me laugh so hard!!! What an ending to this stream! It was perfection!!!!
I literally grew up and live in the “Wild West.” Actual cowboy country. I was so effing excited for this campaign for fantastical relatability (?) and let me tell you it did not disappoint. Everyone was amazing! So SO good.
Mom can't cook slid right in for a second and I loved it haha
This was great and I love having a Q&A after the season now that we're rolling with stories and plot lines it's cool to hear what you all loved or for the DM/GMs planned out and I think it'd be a nice thing after future seasons of games or even the one shots getting some of the personal stuff there as well.

I knew Victoria was going to be the BBEG, because it's such an unavoidable trope, but it still didn't ruin the story for me.
But Andy pulled it off to where it hurt not to say yes to the bady.
I really enjoyed the Deadlands series, and doing this Q&A after is a good 'peek behind the curtain' experience as well as getting MORE of the series even though it's ended. I do think it's a shame that we didn't get to experience more of the gunslingers Andy created for Episode 2, as he's clearly so into Wild West lore, media and history that they were all solidly inspired and fleshed out. Ditto with the extra bits of the World's Fair that he mentioned.
Bellows was and remains my favourite villain from this series, the combination of Andy's characterization and acting of him, and the choice of music (which he discusses more on the podcast) made him menacing and deeply unpleasant in a very compelling way that paradoxically made me want to have him around more. Great stuff.
Now, do a season 2 please!
I kinda thought the most pressing question from the community was going to be about the potential for a second season. But it was only passively mentioned in a noncommitment sort of way. Guess I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
I think, as much as it would be great to have confirmation of future plans, it's best to let the crew have the flexibility to feel out what they want to do without us setting expectations. This way, they feel more in control of their tabletop experience and are more likely to have fun with it and fight off burnout. I think it's a safe bet to say that whatever the OX crew decides to do next, we'll enjoy it.
Would 100% like to see the Blessed Nun (or another one) come into the story.
I don't usually like anything Western so I wasn't prepared for how much I loved this season, when I watched the last episode I felt that same kind of emptiness when you finish a great book, I especially loved the characters and thought part of the greatness was that there was a planned ending to the story I still hope we can get a second season.
I can't get over how I thought they were on a video call or something in this Q&A and then in the final minute of the video Luke leaned forward while adjusting his position and the top of his head appeared on Johnny's panel.

Me either... I feel like in today's world, there's always a few people who get too into something and guess right... But I like the show to be naturally revealed. And even when I'm right about something, I just say, oh I thought that might be it. Because why ruin it for everyone else who didn't guess it. I saw that comment and was like oh... Spoilers... that's why Andy's reaction was so great. He's like, yeah people guessed it but that was the easy part to guess. Haha
Amazing, I must rewatch every episode again. Andy did sutch an amazing job for each episode
After that introduction, it was love at first sight, don't you worry

An amazing q&a to top off an amazing series 🥰 As a lot of people have said I'd also love a s2 but am looking forward to whatever comes next regardless. I did think in the Bellows arc that if I was playing it I would have tried to get that woman who spared the prisoner as an ally and take down Bellows with trickery or something during her duel, but hey the Delacy Ace was such a good moment especially after setting up Bellows with the Nate murder! He was definitely my top pick for favourite npc when the question was brought up

Now that we've seen you Zack, we love you. Tbh you seem like a good fit at the oxboxtra collective
Only just got around to watching this series and ended up binging it in a couple days flat. I loved the new dramatic dimension that these stories had, Andy being a more strict GM was a welcome change, it allowed for extremely tense situations where I genuinely wondered how the Wild Cards were going to get out of this one. My favourite PC was Edie, Ellen's acting with her was so good that I managed to piece together the backstory with her brother before she directly referenced it, based purely on her mannerisms and interactions with Delacey. Andy did some real all-star performances with the five prinicple villains, Bellows and the Hanging Judge like Johnny said made me viscerally uncomfortable and Victoria had a lot more depth than just a simple card-carrying bad guy. Since Johnny has now said that soon a new Oxventure D&D campaign will start, I hope they take on board the new elements that Andy introduced to the Oxventure format, D&D 5E is my favourite system and there's endless depth to be pulled from it, the kind of which that Andy achieved with this campaign.
Just got to point out, every single person said "I play" not PLAYED which means they're still playing which means there's...... Going to be another season! Yay! I seriously love this series. I can't wait for more!
Ngl i was genuinely shocked both when Nate died and when he came back sense I didnt knew anything about those harrowed.
Also the four horseman twist works really well especially retrospectively.
Why does Johnny’s hair look so exceptionally good here
one shot/short campaign concept related to deadlands but DnD...
each character is human and living *in appearrance* at the start of the campaign, awakening in the ruins of their town/village, with the strange, innate knowledge of the distance and direction of those responsible for it's destruction.
They are all actually risen revenants, vampire spawn or other lesser undead, but are, at the start of the campaign, unaware.
the DM either randomly, or by choice, assigns the type to each, and slowly reveals their powers as the events of the campaign/session unfold, until near the end, when the full extent of said abilities, and their nature, becomes completely apparent.
You ran a damn good campaign Andy. ‘‘Twas a joy to watch.
I did 100% NOT see the Four Horseman thing coming! I was blown away by that reveal and really enjoyed it! It was an effective "twist" for me! :D
Always fun watching you merry bunch of nerds play D&D, and I always look forward to the next game.

I agree with Jane, Slim Hawkins was incredible; I LOVE an ultimately "inconsequential" side character who has this massive implied depth and character and humanity, made more poignant by the very fact they are temporary and not the hero of this particular story, and it especially helps when they carry themselves with that devil-may-care, come-what-may fatalism too
Yet the biggest question remains unawnsered. When will we get another season of Oxventure plays DEADLANDS
Like most other commentators, I’ve found this season (of Deadland) to be absolutely captivating, must-watch TTRPG content.
While I love D&D and BitD, I suspect the Weird West allows for the perfect blend of ‘serious narrative/stakes’ with comedic interludes (basically any interaction with a coerced NPC; the charmed security guard at the wellness centre and the hapless actor in the Wheel of Progress spring to mind).
I’m happy enough with the narrative that I’m okay if a season 2 follows another set of Wildcards; I trust in the creative process of the crew and look forward to being taken away on a journey.
P.S: There have been enough ‘oh beans’ moments in all the non-Johnny led RPGs that I’m ready for some more list videos - specific ideas include “7 pet peeves you notice after going from player to game runner in a tabletop RPG’ or 6 needlessly convoluted ways a party completed a mission’.

If only Nate had encountered Pestilence instead of Death, because then all five characters would have met a unique combination of bosses in a really satisfying way

We've seen five out of six members run at least one session so far. Is Jane planning on trying her hand at being a game master? It's perfectly fine if she doesn't want to, as GMing isn't for everyone. With Jane's affinity for Prudence, I'd be interesting to see her run Vampire (a lot of people enjoy Masquerade, while I've only played Requiem). Edgy goth fantasies for everybody!
EDIT: Originally said Mike hadn't run anything either.
Mike did run the Blade Runner one-shot (and did quite well with it!) but I got rather the feeling it may not be his particular bag. So, I am not anticipating seeing Mike run a whole season of anything, but he may pop in for a one-shot now and again. :) So yes, that does leave only Jane to run anything if she does actually want to. Yes, VtM (or VtR, I supose :) ) would be great and is highly anticipated, I'd be thrilled to see her run just about anything, really. I could see Shadowrun as a nifty follow-on from the BitD; magic returns to Geth kind of thing.

given the accent, and mannerisms, i was picturing someone very much like... can't remember the name of the actor, but he played the slimy perv in the doom movie & i know he's played utterly slimy cowboy analogues in the past too..
Two questions I thought would be answered in Delacey’s backstory but weren’t: What is Delacey’s first (or last?) name and how did he get ahold of a powerful army-service revolver in the first place? The latter I suspect to be a family heirloom but through all the introductions, Luke is only one that never gave their character’s full name.
I loved Ben bellows. He was a perfect Richard Brake impression ❤. Look him up.
My biggest question of the series: Where did Johnny get their hat from and what's the model? I love it so much, it puts my stetson to shame.
Can we all acknowledge that Jane never answered weather or not she/her character wanted to say yes to the end of the world? She pick evil and not matter if it's chaotic or neutral she is sticking with it 😂

Planning parrales between the characters and the bosses can be difficult, without tipping them off, especially when the bosses already have themes going for themselves. That said I really do hope for a season 2 because i love dead lands, more than DND.
