  • DND Combat ends with a quiet player dealing the finishing blow. As the DM asks them to describe how they finish the dungeons and dragons encounter, what could go wrong? Whether you play Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, or other TTRPGs, you should always beware the quiet player!

as a quiet player who is in medical classes, i can approve this is the exact language i use. describing every detail and knowing which areas do the most damage depending on what i roll. I think i once described how my character plunged her holy javelin into an enemy as i quoted my most hardcore line.

Had one of these on a small one off with my old AIT buddies. I made a dwarf warlock character and had a lot of inspiration from lovecraftian horror stuff so every time we would end combats i started making a habit of cutting ears and tongues off of any foe nearby that was slain to be used like offerings, but i had such bad luck with the rolls to do it correctly that for like the first 3 or so encounters i just kept horribly mutilating the corpses for no reason. This happened when the rest of the party was interrogating an enemy that was part of an ambush on us and my dwarf was just in the background sawing the jaw off of his allies and ripping their brains out and shit.

The necrotic magic instantly starts rotting away flesh and bone, his screams bouncing off the marble walls as his organs become mush underneath her hand. And once he’s reduced to nothing but dust, she blows what’s left away with a happy smile.” I think it was a stunned 5 minutes of silence before the Barbarian went “Holy FUCK, you have been holding out dude!” So now I talk more cause apparently they vibed really hard with me and my descriptions.

@@ConstructedChaos Oh I get to explain? It's a good day! Platypus Venom is interesting in that it doesn't work like most venoms. It causes a tiny bit of muscle wastage, but that's not its main function. It doesn't shut down any organs or attack the blood or any of that. It just HURTS. (Well, it has paralytic effects on small animals, but not a person or even child sized subject, Halflings might be a little stiff but could probably still move if they aren't overwhelmed by agony)
Platypus venom causes intense, agonizing pain to the point that most people affected with it completely lose the ability to function, in the sense that they are in so much pain they can no longer even move around.
That's not the part that bad guys love, though. Bad guys love the fact that the venom causes Hyperalgesia, or unnaturally increased sensitivity to pain, that can last for months after the initial exposure if you're unlucky, or in D&D terms if you have bad Fort saves.
And I'm gonna quote wikipedia here for some bonus bulslhittery: "A clinical report from 1992 showed that the severe pain was persistent and did not respond to morphine." So you can't even dull the pain with painkillers.

I’m generally quiet when playing dnd, I want to do the thing, I sayi do the thing, I do the thing. Plain and simple, my party is too big to be spending so much time on every player so I like to think I’m giving everyone else more time to do things. That said, the other night we got into an encounter where we jumped in to save an npc who my character wasn’t on good terms with. So I kinda held back a bit (playing a bladesinger so good at any distance) but before I could do anything the leader of the enemy group saw I got left solo and teleported him and a few grunts behind me. I easily took out the grunts and put the leader to sleep with a special poison on my sword (it can apply the poison as a bonus action). After the rest of the grunts we’re swiftly dealt with by the other players I tied up the leader and woke him up by stabbing my sword through his foot. We needed to get some answers about who he is, who sent him, etc. so I spent a good 10 minutes roleplaying with the dm me torturing the I formation out of this guy…

      An description from my notes:
"He smiles, hugging his stomach as he chuckes. The laugh starts to sound strained, yet he carries on. The smile pulls at the corners of his mouth, stretching wider, wider, wider still; tearing away at new bits of flesh to find room for his glee.
Suddenly, his pupils burst, spraying the ground in a black ichor. He looks up, this inky void filling his eyes without and within like vials of midnight. The darkness spills out, running down his face as tear-tracks on fresh-laid snow that pool along his lips, staining gnarled teeth."
There's more there about how he buries his fingers in his face causing it to crack like frost-bitten skin to explain his crimson rite, but it goes on and on painting a picture with metaphors 😂

And we were fighting a druid who killed the woodcutter and his son for cutting wood and I started the combat with "You slithering poisonous vine, you dust collecting green wench, the child murdering whore and man killing coward husk of a demon spawn!"

I think partly this is the result of someone who's not very good with social skills being implicitly asked to be more creative with the fictional violence they inflict and, not being very good with social skills, not knowing where the line is.
I imagine a real life version of this scenario would likely include a few more iterations of description followed by the others at the table egging the quiet player on, encouraging them to be more specific. Then they mistake "specific" for "impactful", and end up thinking 'You want _more_ emotionally impactful violence? Even more than stabbing him in the face? It’s still said it done but yeah, can’t stand the too vivid picture being painted. I’m very happy my tables are respectful of this. I’ve made a ton of progress on my phobia so we can kinda just veil it, but, unfortunately, it isn’t something I’ve completely recovered from.
