    Glad you're bringing awareness to this. You'd be surprised how many people think their bikes are safe with these cheap locks, then have no idea how they got stolen. Their bikes were never secure, they were just under the illusion that it was.
    Might also want to cover how cheap cylindrical key locks can be opened with nothing more than the tube from a cheap bic pen. The moment I learned that one, I threw out my old bike lock.

    • @ellie_vargr
      @ellie_vargr 2 роки тому

      There is a more secure version of this lock that can't be cracked so easily. But, of course, a set of bolt cutters will go through ANY of these super easily.

  • @hothamandfauri
    @hothamandfauri 9 років тому +18

    I figured this trick out years ago when I was 13, I had two old bike locks that I had forgotten the passwords too. This works well on this small bike locks but the larger dial locks are harder and this doesn't work. I have an "On Guard" branded lock and its much larger than these small ones and you can't break the combo like you can on the small ones. Also "Kryptonite" seems to make a really good bike lock that can't be broken this way. Of course a nice set of bolt cutters will easily get through most cheap bike locks.
    Not that I would know.... 😉

    I would 'borrow' bikes to get to and from school from like 4th grade until graduation day (98-07) using this technique. The best part was I only needed to figure out the combination when the owner would get smart enough to change it.
    I actually still have a note that one of my neighbors left on their bike saying that he didn't mind me using it while also begging me to leave a note if I did because he wasn't sure if his bike actually went missing for several hours every day or if he was just going crazy.
    When I saved up enough money for a decent bike of my own I took his out on one last joyride and changed the combination before locking it to his fence post one last time.
    I try to not be a completely awful human being but I do also have a cruel sense of humor.

    instead of wiggling the next wheel, just pull it apart. i had to do this in elementary school when i forgot my code one day. You pull it apart as if it were to open, then spin the closest binding wheel until it pulls apart slightly more then move on to the next. way easier than expected

    Thanks so much for this information. For probably 20 years I have had a bicycle chain lock that I forgot the combination to. I couldn't bring myself to actually throw it away, but never found the time to try process of elimination. But with this information I now know the combination. In my case the hard part was figuring out how to apply the binding force. Pulling both ends of the chain did nothing. Had to actually pull the lock body which itself slides on a long loop that either end of the chain attaches to. But 5 minutes of work and I now have a usable bike lock again.

    2008 had a kid in class ask if he could use a pair of scissor, and cut up a Red Bull Can. Gave him permission, with the Clean Up Your Mess, tag line.
    I watched as he cut the can into a shape that had a point with sides that wraped around a large felt pen.
    He then took this crudely made tool, and then opened 10 Master Locks. He did this in less than 15 minutes !

    Thanks for this video! The information relayed at the 2:30 mark helped me figure out the combination of an open abandoned lock I now use to lock up my daughter's bicycle. By looking inside the chamber while manipulating the outer circular dial I was able to figure out what number combination created a clear path for the toothed key element to slide into unimpeded.

  • @teresalane1004
    @teresalane1004 6 років тому

    Oh my gosh! This so worked! I bought a new Sunlite lock and somehow when I was coding it (my first ever bike lock) the numbers got all screwed up and it wouldn't open on what I thought I had coded it to. I was so mad! By the way, I hate this lock because the directions for coding it for the first time do not give you any warnings at all.
    I couldn't tell at first if the numbers where spinning any differently so I put some WD40 on it and that really helped. My thumbs are tired from trying but, with persistence, I got it. Needless to say, I'm leaving the random numbers that the lock chose for itself because I'm not attempting to recode and have this happen to me again. I'm so pleased with myself I can hardly stand it. Thank you very much for posting this video.

    Holy shit, this vid actually helped me open a combination lock we were fidgeting with on our vacation. We rented 2 bicycle’s and one of them had a combination lock just like the one you guys were using. The reception didn’t give us combination for it, so we simply tried to open it ourselves. After a LOT of tries i finally came across this vid and after trying hard i finally managed to get the correct combination : )

    I've got the same Master cable lock as the one used in the video. My kids lost the combination years ago. It is unlocked. What is the technique for finding the combination for an unlocked cable lock? I may want to use it again, even though cable locks are obviously worthless. UPDATE: Disregard. I figured it out. Push the keyed end in and turn the tumblers starting with the one closest to the key working towards the tumbler farthest from the key, one at a time, until each notch of the key slips in. Write down the combo! Good thing I went to college. Full disclosure: Your video put me on the right track. Thanks for the hint!

    I know from experience that a variation of these locks can be a whole lot harder if there's false gates in there. They make you think you've found the right number, but they're a decoy, and it becomes impossible to tell the false gates from the correct one. My bike lock that I forgot the combination for was a pain to get open. I ended up having to identify all the false gates, and then plug the numbers into a formula to generate all the remaining possible combinations, which in my case added up to 256. Still, way better than the 10,000 possible combinations I was contending with before.

    firaro; its either stuck cos you're twisting the the bit that pulls out too far and the teeth are binding, or the c-clip that holds all the wheels in has moved round. manipulate the c-clip with a knife. on cheap combo locks, the c-clip is a major weakness and the lock can be forced open by simply hammering a screwdriver through the gap to break the clip so that the whole lock falls apart. i reccomend spending af least a tenth of the value of your bike on a good lock to secure it. dont rely on locks from dollar stores -theyre only good enough for picking practice for begnners!

    I've had this particular lock before. The tolerances are so loose that you can just wiggle the binding wheel each time to see if it can move freely laterally. If it can move freely, then the number is correct.

    Well damn. I knew this used to work on the first combo lock bike chains back in the 80s, didn't think it'd still work on modern locks. We just bought a bike with a chain still on it that they'd forgotten the combo for (no, not stolen, it's legit). Watched this video and now a few minutes later I have the unlocked chain in my hands. I think I'll be buying a key lockable chain instead. At least it might slow them down for a *bit* longer.

    Hi, I am trying to decode a 5 digit bike lock, but it is proving to be quite difficult (I have decoded several other 4 and 5 digit locks). This one has 4 black number wheels (black with white numbers) and one yellowish/orange number wheel (on the far right hand side) with black numerals. I can use the normal "binding" approach and feel the gate on each wheel, but it seems as if the yellowish/orange wheel has some other role in opening the lock. The lock has no brand or model number visible on it or the cable - it was purchases about 4 years ago in Hong Kong. Has anyone seen a similar type of 5 digit lock or have any insight in to the role of the 5th wheel ? Thanks ! Bryan

    why are you picking a combo lock thats already been cut through the cable? by the way, the padlock you show t the beginning of this clip can be picked with a shim made from a coke can. cut a piece 3inch long x half inch wide. cut from one corner up at angle to form a V at an angle of approx 20 degrees, about an inch long, then snip the point off to leave a 2mm squared end, fold over the uncut opposite end a couple of times to form a stiffener for the pick about 5mm deep. this shim will fit between the wheels and can be used to feel a deffinate sharp step on one place as you turn the wheel. get this step in the same place on every wheel and then move all four together in one-digit increments and push in the shackle at each step. the lock will spring open at typically 3 or 5 digits from where you set it with the pick. the number showing when youve opened the lock is the actual combo. there is a quicker way to open these with a specialised tool, but that tool just bypasses the wheels and manipulates the locking spring inside, so you wont know the actual combination.

    not drill into mechanism just an horisontal or near h access hole or trench drilled from above a few holes in line to outside area where key teeth enter lock , then with repeated jabbing motion push a straightened cable wire strand in the small space above theeth and under roof of teeth chamber , turn number wheel until wire passes through open tooth gate , continue with wire and let wire end knock on next gate plate and turn that second number wheel until w goes through again and repeat . try it its fun.and kinda easy and the purpose is to reuse the lock . might fill the hole with some filler or gum.
