Stay wet palette (2 cafeteria trays + 2-3 shop towel + 2-3 tracing paper layer) works splendidly and stays workable for a week or more. No medium needed but will still work too. Same as traditional acrylics. The medium would help in plein aire.
Some damp paper towels with cooking parchment on top works in a pinch too. Not ideal long-term, but gives you an idea if a wet palette is for you. I like making one in a storage container with a tight lid.
In my experience, it’s good to know the ideal wet sponge ratio to paints to avoid having runny or almost liquid paints the next day. I wouldn’t probably leave the paints for a week due to mold build up.
I love Holbein Acryla. As someone who paints really fast, I love how quickly it dries. The opacity is enjoyable too. I find the texture easier to work with than most acrylics. I don’t think it feels exactly the same as matte acrylic even though it’s practically the same thing. Liquitex calls theirs acrylic gouache but it doesn’t feel the same. I would call the liquitex simply matte acrylic. I suspect the difference might be pigment density?
Been using Holbein Acryla Gouache for more then 20 years ,must use a wet palette like the Sta-wet Handy Palette can keep paint wet for more then a week,use distilled water in it.Use left over paint for collage papers. Use chalk or oil pastel over it or tone it with watercolor.
I would highly recommend Golden OPEN acrylic Medium Matte. It is fluid and helps make paint run smoothly and keeps paints from drying too quickly. Looking forward to the liquitex and turner paint demos and also would love to know what you make of the Golden So Flat paint . Cheers

The case of OPEN acrylics is very different, this mean you want to turn acrylic paint to a gouache effect. But the purpose of the video concern acrylic gouache. So I came back to the real topic . But if you like to turn open into gouache it's at your convenience.

I fell in love with gouache watching your channel, you inspire me every time I watch your videos, thank you very much! But for me, I stick with normal gouache, apparently it's sticky, and I don't like working with paints like that. This was excellent, and showed me that "acrylic gouache" is really just manufacturers capitalizing on gouache being popular right now. It's really is basically matte acrylic, without the important properties that make make gouache a gouache. Personally, I can only imagine using it on something like furniture where I need a hard, permanent finish.
I can see that it would be great for a permanent under painting that won’t lift when you add layers of traditional gouache or watercolor on top, but taking it out in the field for Plein Air would be a struggle that would be too much for me. My poor brushes! The beauty of traditional gouache is its amazing flexibility. Mixtures or brushes dry out? No worries. Add water, rinse and repeat. Thanks for the great video Sarah!
Acrylic gouache has been around a lot longer than the current popularity for gouache. It offers a different texture for working, and an increased ability to layer, compared to regular gouache. The pigments have a different “glow” in the binder, and the fact the paint moves around differently than other media means you can get unique textures. I similarly find it’s quite different than “regular” acrylic paint, even though they have a similar binder. So I would disagree with the commenter’s opinion that it’s nothing more than a marketing scam on artists. It’s a legit medium, with its own characteristics, and it takes time to learn the best use of it, just like any other medium. I like working with it!
I’ve found airbrush paint thinner works well with acrylic gouache, you can thin it down quite a lot and it stays matte and sticks to its surface. I use the army painter brand x

The modern version seems like to be based not on egg but on some PVA glue (for example Master class tempera). Would be awesome to hear your opinion on these tempera paints one day, and if this option is more environment friendly than acrylic gouache 😌
LOVE that you're trying acrylic gouache! 😃 I'm primarily an acrylic artist & have tried the Liquitex acrylic gouache so I'm eager to see your brand comparison down the road. Now I basically only use traditional gouache (aside from my regular acrylic paintings) but I might have to unearth the Liquitex and play with them again. Side note: I use a glass palette and let the paint on it fully dry, then spritz with water, let it sit a minute and scrape it off with a palette knife and dispose with solid waste. Wet palette is also great ❤
I love the dry brush effect it gave you. I have trouble with that using ordinary gouache because I am not in the Goldilocks zone (not to wet, not too dry) and have no do over room. I might love this stuff.

An easier way to clean up acrylic paint is to wipe off excess and then let it dry. Then I would spray with water, and the dry acrylic bubbles up, lifting right off the mixing palette. Scrape with a paint knife and wipe it if into the garbage Done.
Yea, For my bigger acrylic paintings I usually use disposable palette paper which is suuuuuuuper easy, and I usually end up reusing the same sheet a ton to avoid wasting.
I was sceptical about holbeins acryla guaache because i just dont like acrylics very much, but i have to say these feel magical. I am not using them the way you do though, i use a single drop of water in the paint or a slightly wet brush and the consistency is perfect and then just paint and now water for more dry brush effect. I love how pigmentent and even they are and there is almost no drying shift which was happening to regular acrylics a lot.

I did some paintings a few months ago using Holbein and Turner Acrylic gouache.... using a stay wate pallet and an acrylic extender mix made it much easier to work with. Over all it was okay, I did try cheaper versions (arteza, liquitex) and they were kind of horrible. I really don't know that I will buy more when I run out, I much prefer regular acrylics.
Hi Sarah, your paintings turned out soooo pretty! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work. I've enjoyed using gouache for several years, but the day I tried acrylic gouache I just fell in love. I tend to use the Turner Acryl more, I like it better than the Holbein. I think it's the best of both worlds (gouache and acrylic) and it's easier to use than either. Matte acrylic isn't quite the same in my opinion as the colors aren't as opaque. And Liquitex acrylic gouache is only matte acrylic. It's not as opaque. I didn't like it. As for the drying time, I usually use a stay wet palette, which works great, namely, a plastic box with a thin damp sponge and a white ceramic tile on top for my palette. With the lid close, I can keep the paint fresh for several days. If you don't want to use water as your "solvent", you can use acrylic retarder by either Turner or Golden. It makes the paint easier to spread and keeps it open a little longer. If you use watercolor paper and enough water, you should be able to blend you paint on the paper a little longer. I can't wait to see your other reviews...

I fell for these and the more affordable Turner brand and bought a bunch. After using them, I decided they weren’t a medium I’m going to repurchase. I love gouache (and just bought the shinHan I’ve heard you recommend when it went on sale during Prime day). I also really enjoy Liquitex soft body and will continue to rely on those for acrylic painting.
I have been thinking of getting a sketchbook with toned tan or beige paper because I see how you seem to love it, but hearing about how I would need thicker paints to cover the beige paper here is giving me a second thought 😅. Also, I started with watercolor then gouache, then recently I tried acrylics and acrylic gouache, but I always have a nagging worry about ruining my brushes with acrylic or acrylic gouache because I sometimes forget to wash my brushes immediately and also the issue of cleaning up/ disposing the waste water and paints that I feel I am retreating back to regular gouache and watercolor for my quick paintings for relaxation.

Your paintings turned out so beautifully. Have you ever tried casein paint? It's a bit like gouache, but it will eventually become permanent. James Gurney uses it and it's really fun to paint with. Thanks for your insights on acrylic gouache, maybe I'll break out my tubes and give it a go.
How about using Golden Open (Matte)medium. It keeps the „acrylics“ from drying out too quickly and is not glossy. However Golden has a line called “SoFlat” which are really flat and should achieve similar/same results as Acrylic Gouache. Also, I use a „Sta Wet“ palette for my normal Acrylics and I just love it!! Not afraid to waste my paint anymore (because it might dry before I have a chance to use it). And you can just take out the paper (nothing in the sink or drain) and throw it in the right bin when finished.😊😊

I can’t see myself investing/collecting another medium at the moment, but maybe in a few years (never say never 😊). I feel like I have so much to learn with the supplies I have. Ah! I love acryla and used it a lot and still use it… but I just bought some gouache and curious to learn about how to use it, now that I am used more to layering permanent finishes..I so much want to love gouache as it feels more portable and somehow in my head..more eco friendly?
Beautiful as always. Just a couple of things you may want to try if you are going to be doing a lot of Acryla Gouache. StayWet pallett's are a godsend for acrylic, gouache as well as watercolour. It Keeps your paint workable and soft for longer. The other thing is that you can try a retarder for Acryla gouache which is made by Turner. It does not affect the matte quality of the gouache.

Whenever I watch you paint with gouache I'd like to see the same painting painted with watercolor, but also I feel tempted to buy gouache and try it out... I wish I wouldn't have tons of unused watercolors in my drawers... 😅 I'm on a "no buy" phase. But I have tons of Royal & Langnickel student grade watercolors in tubes... what if I use those as gouache? Would it work?
Depending on the fact you would like to exhibit framed works, it is interesting to know that many of the range of Holbein acryla gouache are only two stars of light fastness. Holbein acryla gouache, this japanese kind of gouache is mostly used for illustration and anime project. Also, I personally don't like the plastic tubes because I am used to roll the metallic tubes until the end. I think these plastic tubes let enter air by the movement of pressure and could dry easily paint into the tube if you don't use it for months, isn't it ?
If anyone really needs the permanent quality of acrylic but worry about the waste, I've seen quite a few artists keep their sketchbooks open nearby or keep spare sheets of butchers paper and either wipe their brush or spread left over paint on those so they use as much of it as possible. The sketchbook page have the effect of taking away the blank page anxiety, and the butchers paper can be used in mixed media collages. Just means a little more of the paint is going to use rather than in the bin.

No because if the paint dries it would stick to the bristles and destroy the brushes! You have no idea how many brushes my mom destroyed in painting clases she attended 😂 she would tell me she washed them throughly but she must have left them out of the water while painting! When using acrylics I highly recommend keeping your standby brushes inside a cup of water to avoid any paint drying in the bristles. Throughly cleaning each brush after each color can interrupt your painting flow, at least in my process. There are some cheap brush cleaners online, not as in a soap to wash them but it’s a surface you run your brush through to be able to remove all the paint! It can help remove the paint that’s stuck deep inside the bristles that we can’t get out by scrubbing in a jar.
I used my cheap brushes because I am SO forgetful and I didn’t want to risk ruining my nice brushes. I have a whole separate box of brushes I use for acrylics and another for oils. But I just wanted to play so the cheap brush was fine enough (not great but not terrible). It’s actually one of the brushes I reviewed as a gouache brush in a video I did a while back “ultimate gouache brush review” or something
I really like Jo Sonja Matte Flow Acrylic. They marketed it for awhile as acrylic gouache but have went back to the original matte flow marketing. Its used by a lot of folk artists and they confused them more then it was worth I guess. It is made by Chroma from Australia and they also have factories in the US. They sell it in 75ml tubes instead of 20ml. They use great pigments, having a ton of single pigment colors. It thins down nicely dries super matte, I love it. They also have a wide range of great mediums... they sell a great flow medium, as well as a good retarder. I bought a bunch as an acrylic gouache first... and find myself more now using it for initial layers for larger acrylic works, starting with nice Jo Sonja matte layers then moving on to Golden Heavy body with golden glazing medium, the matte finish on the bottom makes for great luminous effects. Anyway if you can find a well priced supply where you are its worth checking out. In Canada its far better priced then Holbein... cheaper per tube and almost 4x the paint. Compared head to head I prefer it to Holbein, its about =ly pigmented... but Jo Sonja uses better more lightfast colors, more single pigments (like Single pigment PR122s and PO73s ect). One of my favorite all around paints. Another good one to look at is. M. Graham Acrylic paint. I know its not marketed as gouache. (In their marketing they do say the consistency is gouache like) I have a handful of MG acrylics and love them very much. It is gouache like... they don't have anything to make the finish matte however they don't add anything to make anything shine either. Most of what I have is earth type tones and their white... they all dry pretty matte. At some point I'm going to expand my own MG acrylics... might switch to them from Golden heavy, as more and more I'm not using paint heavy anyway.
@@charmainew.1458 I like it better then holbein Acrylic gouache personally... but that is me. What I like is Jo Sonja has actual transparent colors. That works better for me. I also like artist style gouache and mostly use M. Graham gouache which has many transparent colors. It works for the way I paint. That can be a good thing or bad for you, both are high quality paint. I do use Holbein heavy body acrylic, I am a big fan.
@@charmainew.1458 You can mix with either. I personally prefer Jo sonja as I was able to build a completely single pigment palette. Holbein does mix fine of course. With Jo sonja you do have to consider the transparency of your pigments is all. If you want to cover something you'll have to mix with an opaque or white. If you want to glaze however that is something that is far easier with Jo Sonja.
Hey Sarah :-) I own every kind of paint imaginable, but I do not own acrylic gouache… I could never figure out what the benefit was other than having a matte acrylic. I haven’t tried it yet, but I would like to know if you’ve ever tried mixing gesso in your regular acrylics to make them more opaque and Matt? sounds like it would be less expensive way of making acrylic gouache :-)
The only problem I have with working with acrylic is my climate is dry and my paints dry easily. If i use extenders it can ruin the mate of the paint unless i use mate extenders
Beautiful work! And your paint disposal method - basically, you clean the palette in a bucket, dump that water into another bucket, and let it evaporate/dry out? What were you saying about clean paint water in the top of the bucket? I've never seen anyone do that before, so I'm really curious! Thanks!
Basically the dirty paint water sit out so the paint sediment settles at the bottom of the bucket. Throw the water as normal and wipe off the sediment for proper disposal. If you use oil paints, this is also the preferred disposal method.
Once the pigment settles, the whole top layer is clear water. I can either scoop that out, or pour (carefully) into my jar. Then the rest of the water at the bottom of the bucket evaporates quicker, and the pigment can be scraped away. I bought acrylic gouache before regular gouache because the lady in the art shop said there was no difference. I was so pissed off I haven’t touched it since! Could I use acrylic gouache as an underpainting for regular gouache?
I simply believe the popularity of gouache has led to this "new" product. I feel it is just flat acrylic paint. Golden has the SoFlat line of paints and they charge a premium for it too! If you want a flat or non-glossy surface for your acrylic paintings use a matt medium. This solution is cheaper and does not require buying a "new" medium and learning a new way of working with a new medium either!

Ive used both medium and definitely prefer acrylic gouache as it’s much more pigmented than regular matte acrylic. A dab of acryla gouache goes a long way too unlike regular acrylic. I use Holbein and quality had been consistent.

I am interested to see how this behaves any different than traditional acrylics with a matte medium added. Acrylics can also be diluted in water. Is this just pre-mixed and sold at a premium?
I mentioned in another comment that i find acryla gouache much more pigmented than regular matte acrylic. Depending where you live, they can be affordable.

I am not remotely interested in adding more plastic to the environment. Not sure drying the paint then adding to the landfill trash is beneficial to anyone/thing.

I suppose that médium could be good for glazing. The role of a medium is thinner paint or thicker paint but not to wet or rewet.
Oh, and I use a Teflon oven liner as my palette. When the paint dries, I have cool films to peel off and use in collage.

There is a specification on using acrylic gouache, this is the mat and velvet effect.

Although it is as what youve said, I find acryla gouache more pigmented than regular matte acrylic which I find illustrators prefer for vibrancy.
Even on furniture you are probably better off using regular acrylic and using a matte varnish.

I am not using them the way you do though, i use a single drop of water in the paint or a slightly wet brush and the consistency is perfect and then just paint and now water for more dry brush effect. I love how pigmentent and even they are and there is almost no drying shift which was happening to regular acrylics a lot.

I did some paintings a few months ago using Holbein and Turner Acrylic gouache.... using a stay wate pallet and an acrylic extender mix made it much easier to work with. Over all it was okay, I did try cheaper versions (arteza, liquitex) and they were kind of horrible. I really don't know that I will buy more when I run out, I much prefer regular acrylics.

I've enjoyed using gouache for several years, but the day I tried acrylic gouache I just fell in love. I tend to use the Turner Acryl more, I like it better than the Holbein. I think it's the best of both worlds (gouache and acrylic) and it's easier to use than either. Matte acrylic isn't quite the same in my opinion as the colors aren't as opaque. And Liquitex acrylic gouache is only matte acrylic. It's not as opaque. I didn't like it. As for the drying time, I usually use a stay wet palette, which works great, namely, a plastic box with a thin damp sponge and a white ceramic tile on top for my palette. With the lid close, I can keep the paint fresh for several days. If you don't want to use water as your "solvent", you can use acrylic retarder by either Turner or Golden. It makes the paint easier to spread and keeps it open a little longer.
If you use watercolor paper and enough water, you should be able to blend you paint on the paper a little longer.

I fell for these and the more affordable Turner brand and bought a bunch. After using them, I decided they weren’t a medium I’m going to repurchase. I love gouache (and just bought the shinHan I’ve heard you recommend when it went on sale during Prime day). I also really enjoy Liquitex soft body and will continue to rely on those for acrylic painting.

I have been thinking of getting a sketchbook with toned tan or beige paper because I see how you seem to love it, but hearing about how I would need thicker paints to cover the beige paper here is giving me a second thought 😅. Also, I started with watercolor then gouache, then recently I tried acrylics and acrylic gouache, but I always have a nagging worry about ruining my brushes with acrylic or acrylic gouache because I sometimes forget to wash my brushes immediately and also the issue of cleaning up/ disposing the waste water and paints that I feel I am retreating back to regular gouache and watercolor for my quick paintings for relaxation.

Your paintings turned out so beautifully. Have you ever tried casein paint? It's a bit like gouache, but it will eventually become permanent. James Gurney uses it and it's really fun to paint with. Thanks for your insights on acrylic gouache, maybe I'll break out my tubes and give it a go.

How about using Golden Open (Matte)medium. It keeps the „acrylics“ from drying out too quickly and is not glossy. However Golden has a line called “SoFlat” which are really flat and should achieve similar/same results as Acrylic Gouache. Also, I use a „Sta Wet“ palette for my normal Acrylics and I just love it!! Not afraid to waste my paint anymore (because it might dry before I have a chance to use it). And you can just take out the paper (nothing in the sink or drain) and throw it in the right bin when finished.😊😊

I honestly didn’t think it would dry as fast as it did, and it was such a small sketch 😆 I love my stay wet palettes though and definitely use them often
Ah! I love acryla and used it a lot and still use it… but I just bought some gouache and curious to learn about how to use it, now that I am used more to layering permanent finishes..I so much want to love gouache as it feels more portable and somehow in my head..more eco friendly?
Beautiful as always. Just a couple of things you may want to try if you are going to be doing a lot of Acryla Gouache. StayWet pallett's are a godsend for acrylic, gouache as well as watercolour. It Keeps your paint workable and soft for longer. The other thing is that you can try a retarder for Acryla gouache which is made by Turner. It does not affect the matte quality of the gouache.

Whenever I watch you paint with gouache I'd like to see the same painting painted with watercolor, but also I feel tempted to buy gouache and try it out... I wish I wouldn't have tons of unused watercolors in my drawers... 😅 I'm on a "no buy" phase. But I have tons of Royal & Langnickel student grade watercolors in tubes... what if I use those as gouache? Would it work?

Depending on the fact you would like to exhibit framed works, it is interesting to know that many of the range of Holbein acryla gouache are only two stars of light fastness. Holbein acryla gouache, this japanese kind of gouache is mostly used for illustration and anime project. Also, I personally don't like the plastic tubes because I am used to roll the metallic tubes until the end. I think these plastic tubes let enter air by the movement of pressure and could dry easily paint into the tube if you don't use it for months, isn't it ?
I don’t exhibit my gouache paintings in frames. If I did I would only use lightfast pigments.
If anyone really needs the permanent quality of acrylic but worry about the waste, I've seen quite a few artists keep their sketchbooks open nearby or keep spare sheets of butchers paper and either wipe their brush or spread left over paint on those so they use as much of it as possible. The sketchbook page have the effect of taking away the blank page anxiety, and the butchers paper can be used in mixed media collages. Just means a little more of the paint is going to use rather than in the bin.

No because if the paint dries it would stick to the bristles and destroy the brushes! You have no idea how many brushes my mom destroyed in painting clases she attended 😂 she would tell me she washed them throughly but she must have left them out of the water while painting! When using acrylics I highly recommend keeping your standby brushes inside a cup of water to avoid any paint drying in the bristles. Throughly cleaning each brush after each color can interrupt your painting flow, at least in my process. There are some cheap brush cleaners online, not as in a soap to wash them but it’s a surface you run your brush through to be able to remove all the paint! It can help remove the paint that’s stuck deep inside the bristles that we can’t get out by scrubbing in a jar.
I used my cheap brushes because I am SO forgetful and I didn’t want to risk ruining my nice brushes. I have a whole separate box of brushes I use for acrylics and another for oils. But I just wanted to play so the cheap brush was fine enough (not great but not terrible). It’s actually one of the brushes I reviewed as a gouache brush in a video I did a while back “ultimate gouache brush review” or something
I really like Jo Sonja Matte Flow Acrylic. They marketed it for awhile as acrylic gouache but have went back to the original matte flow marketing. Its used by a lot of folk artists and they confused them more then it was worth I guess. It is made by Chroma from Australia and they also have factories in the US. They sell it in 75ml tubes instead of 20ml. They use great pigments, having a ton of single pigment colors. It thins down nicely dries super matte, I love it. They also have a wide range of great mediums... they sell a great flow medium, as well as a good retarder. I bought a bunch as an acrylic gouache first... and find myself more now using it for initial layers for larger acrylic works, starting with nice Jo Sonja matte layers then moving on to Golden Heavy body with golden glazing medium, the matte finish on the bottom makes for great luminous effects.
Anyway if you can find a well priced supply where you are its worth checking out. In Canada its far better priced then Holbein... cheaper per tube and almost 4x the paint. Compared head to head I prefer it to Holbein, its about =ly pigmented... but Jo Sonja uses better more lightfast colors, more single pigments (like Single pigment PR122s and PO73s ect). One of my favorite all around paints.
Another good one to look at is. M. Graham Acrylic paint. I know its not marketed as gouache. (In their marketing they do say the consistency is gouache like) I have a handful of MG acrylics and love them very much. It is gouache like... they don't have anything to make the finish matte however they don't add anything to make anything shine either. Most of what I have is earth type tones and their white... they all dry pretty matte. At some point I'm going to expand my own MG acrylics... might switch to them from Golden heavy, as more and more I'm not using paint heavy anyway.

@@charmainew.1458 I like it better then holbein Acrylic gouache personally... but that is me. What I like is Jo Sonja has actual transparent colors. That works better for me. I also like artist style gouache and mostly use M. Graham gouache which has many transparent colors. It works for the way I paint. That can be a good thing or bad for you, both are high quality paint. I do use Holbein heavy body acrylic, I am a big fan.

@@charmainew.1458 You can mix with either. I personally prefer Jo sonja as I was able to build a completely single pigment palette. Holbein does mix fine of course. With Jo sonja you do have to consider the transparency of your pigments is all. If you want to cover something you'll have to mix with an opaque or white. If you want to glaze however that is something that is far easier with Jo Sonja.
Hey Sarah :-) I own every kind of paint imaginable, but I do not own acrylic gouache… I could never figure out what the benefit was other than having a matte acrylic. I haven’t tried it yet, but I would like to know if you’ve ever tried mixing gesso in your regular acrylics to make them more opaque and Matt? sounds like it would be less expensive way of making acrylic gouache :-)
The only problem I have with working with acrylic is my climate is dry and my paints dry easily. If i use extenders it can ruin the mate of the paint unless i use mate extenders

Beautiful work! And your paint disposal method - basically, you clean the palette in a bucket, dump that water into another bucket, and let it evaporate/dry out? What were you saying about clean paint water in the top of the bucket? I've never seen anyone do that before, so I'm really curious! Thanks!
Basically the dirty paint water sit out so the paint sediment settles at the bottom of the bucket. Throw the water as normal and wipe off the sediment for proper disposal. If you use oil paints, this is also the preferred disposal method.
Once the pigment settles, the whole top layer is clear water. I can either scoop that out, or pour (carefully) into my jar. Then the rest of the water at the bottom of the bucket evaporates quicker, and the pigment can be scraped away. I bought acrylic gouache before regular gouache because the lady in the art shop said there was no difference. I was so pissed off I haven’t touched it since! Could I use acrylic gouache as an underpainting for regular gouache?

I simply believe the popularity of gouache has led to this "new" product. I feel it is just flat acrylic paint. Golden has the SoFlat line of paints and they charge a premium for it too! If you want a flat or non-glossy surface for your acrylic paintings use a matt medium. This solution is cheaper and does not require buying a "new" medium and learning a new way of working with a new medium either!
Actually it is not a new product. It’s been available for decades.

Ive used both medium and definitely prefer acrylic gouache as it’s much more pigmented than regular matte acrylic. A dab of acryla gouache goes a long way too unlike regular acrylic. I use Holbein and quality had been consistent.

I think that apart from the feeling of it while painting it does not worth it! if you want mat finish use gouache and the ability of not creating a bloody mess but want a mat finish just use acrylics and just put a mat finishing spay on it!! Embrace the sticky dry brush effect and also experiment woth color! Because you can layer forever! It doesnt matter!

No. Once dry on palette, you cant activate them.
Depends how dry the paint is, the more it dries the more it turns solid.

I am not remotely interested in adding more plastic to the environment. Not sure drying the paint then adding to the landfill trash is beneficial to anyone/thing.

Yep, that is a huge downside. Same for regular acrylics, and even oils. Watercolor and gouache are just nice and easy.
