Did my gouache FADE After 6 months?? ➤ Lightfast Test Results

  • Here are the results of my 6 month gouache lightfast tests. The results show significant changes in some colors, mostly in the student grade paint, but also in some of the pinks/violet of professional gouache. Prussian blue is also usual culprit. However the majority seemed OK since I tend do select "stable" colors as my limited palette choices. I suggest doing your own tests for whatever gouache you own. It is easy, and I explain it all in my gouache database. #gouache

    Wow.. how interesting! I was surprised at some of the changes. This kind of database is extremely important for those of us who are just starting out using Gouasche. I noticed a couple of the colors that faded are in my personal collection, but I don’t use gouache as often as I use watercolor, but then again we run into the same fading problem with some of the pigments there as well. Thank you for taking the time to do such an extensive study ..and putting it into a database that’s available to everyone. God bless you as you continue your artistic journey and share it with all of us.

    I’m sure I’m not the only artist on here currently sighing in relief that all the paint I bought is perfectly fine based on your research! I always pay attention to lightfastness on their labels but this proof is reassuring. Thank you for going to such lengths!

      Thank you so much for this information. I have not bought many brands of gouache and these results are awesome because the brands that I have in my possession are the ones with the best results. Of course I went with the brands that I have because they were the ones that you liked the most. My journey with gouache started ever since I have found you. You are so talented and inspiring!!! You have a way of explaining the how to and the why that my brain comprehend. Learning from you is so easy. Once again thank you for sharing these amazing tests and results. Your the best!

    No surprise on the Himi's. I have some but they're just for fun or sketchbook or maybe if something turns out really great, I'll scan it for prints.

    Hey Sarah! thank you for these lightfastness tests you do, this is so helpful and informative. The ASTM ratings and the ratings some companies give their colors can be outright false, so independent tests like yours, Kim Crick, and handprint (Bruce MacEvoy) offers us artists more accurate results compared to what the industry says.

    • @theroadhome_Liz_Summers

    Sarah I invested in Shinhan a while ago based on your recommendation and love them so I am very happy with this test. Also I was impressed with the results of Ateza, do you think if mixed with a different brand of white more lightfast it would improve the longevity of Arteza? I have hesitated getting them because I am concerned about the lightfastness, but as a rule I only tint with my Holbein and W n N whites.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому

      I don’t know if the white is the only culprit. I think it has to do with the pigments they use
      If you love their gouache it’s worth doing your own test. 2-4 months in the window then you’ll have your answer!

  • @bluewren65
    @bluewren65 Місяць тому +1

    Wonderful. Thanks for doing these tests so I don't have to! I didn't know about Prussian blue fading in tints, but it explains why Schminke don't have a Prussian blue in their Horadam range as they are super fussy about lightfastness. I have made my own Prussian blue gouache, so I think I'll do some tints and see how it fares.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +1

      It does return to normal when placed away from light (not convenient for hanging art but still interesting!)

    Ohhhh… I had no idea Prussian blue was such a problem child. I love that colour 😢. I always think of reds/pinks as being problematic so I’m cautious with them, but thought blues were safer.

    Hi Sarah. Thanks for all that information. You saved me a lot of time. I love all of your videos and greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into creating them. One question. If I thin my acrylic or regular gouache down to look like watercolor, will that affect the lightfastness?

  • @nicholascaldwell6079

    The M Graham performance was pleasing to me as a fan of the range. I was very impressed with the Napthol Red's lightfastness. It's a colour I avoid as it's not the highest rated, and the Australian sun is pretty brutal on cooler-biased reds, but maybe I should just relax a little there.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому

      You might want to do tests for your favorites in the australian sun as that will be MUCH different to Scotland! But hopefully they will still be fine.

    That’s really interesting - great work - i don’t understand why the white mix is more likely to fade - is it diluting the pigment or another quality in the white please? Thanks really enjoyed this.

    One thing to keep in mind if you've got fugitive colours on your palette is that you can get uv filtering glass when framing the paintings to protect them.

    • @ghoulchan7525

    I'm a bit confused why you didn't talk about "stars". Like one star violets and pinks do disappear, it's just the thing they do! It's only important if they're aren't one star.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +5
