  • This is a realistic caddis/sedge pupa pattern with a nice body technique for breathing gills. You can use Bug Skin chamois in different colours to match the style of caddia required. Give this one a go, you wont be disappointed. Visit my site thefeatherbender.com

Very nice effect of the gills wrapped around the bug skin with the ostrich herl. I have tried to think of many ways to get this effect. This is a great way. Time consuming but very realistic. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

I must try this!! Years ago before they were selling Chamois or Bug Skin, I was always looking for new materials. I had gone to Tandy's leather shop up in NE British Columbia looking for leather for a friend of mine and I found a scrap box with very thin suede and a rather thick leather stripping that was very fuzzy on the inside. I bought both materials for my own project and took them home.
Out of that came my stonefly patterns that worked very well for me. I used black, brown or olive suede to tie Stonefly nymphs. Some dubbed like coloured rabbit fur and some biots in the same colours for antenna and legs. The texture of wet suede is so life like that fish might miss it on the first hit but they always came back for a second and third time if I was very slow.
So I tried the thicker leather with the really fuzzy side for Dragonfly nymphs and again I found the fish just turned on hard when I threw nymphs made with that. I will try your body building technique! It has been a long time since I did this but now that my memory is jogged I feel compelled, thank you Barry, it is 2am I am off to bed. Much respect sir! My regards to the cat!!

Thanks Kerry. Its a good old pattern of mine that I can't tie anymore because Rocky Mountain Dubbing who produced this 'chamois' doesn't do it anymore. The cat is good 15 years old now.

Whenever I tie one like this, it looks so good that the trees eat it in the first 5 min on the river.

Night try casting "toward the water". I know it works pretty good, well sometimes, for me.

Thanks Rocky, unfortunately the body material came from Rocky Mountain Dubbing but is no longer available and I haven't found a good substitute...

Barry. This is a most wonderful pattern and demo, but as it arrives on my screen it's absolutely STUFFED with ads and pop-ups. I know you are too classy to stoop to utter monetisation, so UA-cam are messing with your reputation.

Hi D, thanks. Yeah thats YT doing their thing I am afraid, very little I can do about that and they seam to choose the videos they put ads in at random, I have no idea... You can, I think, buy a special YT subscription from YT so you never see any ads, but they wan't money from you either way...
