- The Sasquatch was designed by George Leonard Herter in the late 1960's and was said to be a entirely new type of dry fly! The Sasquatch floats like a cork and catches stream trout like no other fly. Named after the Sasquatch ape-like creatures of the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon and British Columbia. This is a 'Journal fly' for the serious dry fly fisherman. it says in it's original description.

Cool pattern, sort of like a Tom Thumb with a soft shuck and a hackle collar, almost a shape shifter quality to imitate a few food items. Herter's was a great mail order business back in the day, I've purchased some decoys from them. I wasn't aware of his fly tying until I searched to find more of GL Herter's flies. One forum talked about a Herter manual and said he was quite the BS artist and about 90% of the info was incorrect, but he was a master at marketing. Either way, that's a cool beast of a fly. Awesome trick with the "mini prophylactic". Thanks Barry!

If you pushed the flared deer hair back with a tube slid over the eye towards the deer hair tail it would be easier and quicker to position the hair so you could wrap the thread forward! Just my suggestion! Excellent demonstration! Thanks!

I’m from BC Canada and use this little critter all the time. Caught my personal best rainbow on this exact fly. (27 inch 5.5 pound). He hit the Sasquatch hard and put up a huge fight. The fly was completely destroyed after 3 more decent sized rainbows. I now carry at least 6 of these in a couple different sizes and colours. (Grey, green and orange) brook trout love the smaller orange ones

Orange for Brook trout eh? Then it should work well here in NL too! Always found orange on a fly is a good colour for them! 😊

This pattern could be easily modified to become a floating minnow and/ or weighted to fish a bit deeper!

I like the rubber finger to separate the materials. I bet you can just slide it back over the hackle and down again. Then it can be reused. I'm thinking stonefly.
Hi Jim, thanks. Yes you can re use them and slide them back on the bobbin but I don't slide them back over hackle.
@@Thefeatherbender Yes I can see it doing harm to the hackle, perhaps if you put a little bigger hole maybe a scissor cut it would be better. I'll give that a try and see. Great work again.

If one were to make a complete generalization. Europeans create flies which are timeless, elegant and quite effective. Americans create flies which appear to be something found underneath a couch and tied with whatever the dog dragged in, yet also quite effective. As an American fly shop owner, i think it fits.
If you can put it on a hook,use it!I do!Hair o' the dog,carpet fibers,etc,etc!

Hi Jeff, I was a little baffled by that also in the recipe! But I interpreted it to be Chinchilla coloured marabou which is grey with white tips...
