  • In this episode, my oldest son and daughter 15 and 16-year-olds share their experience as Black American teens attending high school in South Africa. They share their views on learning South African languages to include IsiZulu and Afrikaans. We also touch on their thoughts about the state of Covid 19 and sanitization efforts in Gauteng since our arrival. Most important they share how they fit in with other students and juxtapose their experiences as students in South Africa versus the United States.

    I teach both of these young people and I found this video extremely interesting and helpful. We as teachers do not always realise exactly what children go through when they walk through our doors. Shawn and Seoul are two exceptional young people who quickly adapted to a new country, a new school with a completely different teaching-learning model to what they were used to and I find it truly inspiring. You have managed to critically compare the two countries without bias. You should be so proud of yourselves and you are more welcome here than you might think.

      Hi, Just remember that a lot of the South African kids now end up at Ivy League schools in the US, UK, Europe and Canada. We further have kids that end up in universities in China and Japan. So it's about finding the school that will get you the output you want for your child
      so research the following school
      St Stithians
      St John
      St Marys
      King Edward VII School
      Michaelhouse
      Hilton Colledge
      Pretoria Boys

      Grey College
      Selborne College

    Sean-Michael can still learn Mandarin in South Africa. There are schools which have Mandarin as an additional language. Most Black South Africans speak Afrikaans, although there is a growing number of Black people who have an attitude towards the language because of our painful history of segregation through apartheid.

    • @ElisaShyreseMinistries
      @ElisaShyreseMinistries  3 роки тому +2

      Hello, yes I have seen this. I too took Mandarin for some time in high school. How I wish I had not lost it. Yes during a video that I recently shot at the Apartheid Museum, I can see how this has been such a heart issue for Black South Africans. I was wondering how as Black Americans they would be perceived in learning/speaking the language. Outside their school and in the everyday life of South Africa.

      @@ElisaShyreseMinistries Interesting discussion here. A lot of Black South Africans can speak or at least understand Afrikaans. And we also use a lot of Afrikaans words in our day to day lives, even when we aren't speaking Afrikaans.
      Actually, what is formally known as South African English, contains a lot of Afrikaans words or Afrikaans-inspired words. Words like "nogal" "gooi" "lekker" "wors" etc are all South African English words which were borrowed from Afrikaans.
      Also, the day to day native languages that people speak around Gauteng, and even in many parts of SA, have borrowed a lot of words from Afrikaans. The average Black South African does not speak pure Zulu or pure Sotho or pure anything if we're being honest. We've all for the most part borrowed so many Afrikaans words. So you see, learning Afrikaans is a smart move and your son will do well socially because he understands it.
      However, English is our lingua franca in SA, so you hardly come across a Black South African speaking pure Afrikaans as a result. This is also because if the painful past attached to the language, unfortunately. But life goes on 😁🥂
      NB: I would advise you to get a South African English dictionary if you haven't already. There's UK English, US English, Canadian, Australian, and then South African English. It's even an option on most computers for those who prefer it over the other English dialects/types. The dictionary will help you guys so so much.

    • @kgomotsotlhapane1161
      @kgomotsotlhapane1161 3 роки тому +8

      STOMPI is a key element to understanding and improving your Afrikaans. STOMPI is a template for word order in Afrikaans, if you follow its rules, you will never have trouble writing a speech again! So lets dive in.
      STOMPI stands for parts of speech and types of words. Here is the acronym STOMPI in its complete form. As you can see, there are verbs after the subject and after the place. Let me take you through STOMPI and explain to you each letter. But first you must understand that each letter stands for a word in a sentence and the word in the sentence will go in the same place as the letter (between other parts of speech). The S stands for Subject. The subject is the person or thing doing the action in the sentence. For example, ons, ek and hulle(We, I, She/He) can be subject words. You must remember that context is very important!
      The next letter is the silent v which stands for verb 1. There is a simple principle in Afrikaans sentences, and this is, whatever the sentence starts with, the verb comes next. The first verb in afrikaans sentences can be any verb, but if there is an auxiliary verb such as het or sal(has,shall) in the sentence, they will usually be in the verb 1 position.
      T is the next letter in STOMPI and it stands for time. Time words will be placed after the first verb. You can usually tell time words apart from other words by them mentioning a time of day, or a number that indicates hours or minutes. Examples of time words can be huur, middag and môre(hour,day,tomorrow)
      The fourth letter in STOMPI is O and it stands for object. An object in a sentence is a noun and something that an action can be done to. For example you can play on a SOCCER FIELD. Examples of objects can be rekenaar, tafel and pad(computer,table,way/path)
      The next letter is M which stands for manner. Manner is the way in which the verb is done. You can think of them as adverbs. For example stadig(slow/slowly)can be a manner word. In a sentence it would say Die seun hardloop vandag stadig(The boy is running slowly today)
      The P is next and it stands for place. This is a pretty straight forward one. Basically if anything is a place or location it goes in the position of the “p”. Examples of place words are in die bedkamer/slaapkamer, huis or klaskamer(bedroom,house,classroom)
      The second verb comes next. This is where all of your “GEs” in past tense will go and where the second verb in future tense will go. The second verb can also be any regular verb as well.
      The final part of stompie is the infinitive. This is very distinguishable because an infinitive is where you have om te(about,to) in the second part. An infinitive looks a lot like a sentence - here is an example: om crieket te speel.(about to play cricket)
      Let me now give you a sentence and we can then identify the different sections of STOMPI!
      Campbell sal krieket op die veld speel.( Campbell will play cricket on the field)
      It is important to note that not every sentence has to have every part of STOMPI.
      We can now see that Campbell is the subject, sal is v1, krieket is the object, op die veld is the place and speel is v2!
      NB: You cant construct a sentence using the English rule, otherwise it will not make any sense.
