@@ajaayvSpeaking fluent English doesn't mean they are educated.
Uneducated people also can speak English fluently if they have practise.
This is a common thing in South Asia, speaking English fluently is considered as intelligent.

I lived in Colombo in the 70's. My salary wasRs 125.00 pm. I needed Rs 175.00 to survive. I managed with parental support as they lived in an outstation town. As per the young people now you need around Rs 50k to survive. So in 50 years things have gone up by 30,000%. How things have changed

@@hsddheiowrpq Economy is not the worst. It was in a bad position duirng the 2022, in a time of crisis. However this followed after about a decade of rapid economic growth so many see it as a boom and bust scenario. Its important to understand this kind of sudden crisis was not expected and was almost a direct result of the halt of the tourism industry that followed the 2019 bombings and the pandemic.

An educated girl working in heart of colombo will need 50k to feel comfortable and free.. ie to dress moderately fashionably, travel without harrasement, go out a few times with friends, go on occasional trips. May be young men can manage with 30k. Depending on the distance to travel to work the living costs vastly vary.
On the other hand very few jobs pay over 75k. Most remain at pre economic crisis levels. Costs have trebled but earnings remained same amt. Earnings are not at all enough for married people with school going children.
You were interviewing fairly well to do boarderline upper middle class youth who have the support of their parents. The financial pressure is very high for the lower middle class. The plight of those youth is left to the divine forces😢. Officially there are 7mn poor people in the country who can barely afford 1 meal a day.

and something most people do not talk about is the background if you do not look "posh" some places will not give you a job or like the school you went to is crap some places will hire a person who went to a nicer school even if you more qualified etc.

A person should learn what PPP is not GDP, People from the third world think the other side of the river is green, left Sri Lanka at the age of 19 and today I am 67, my siblings think I am rich where as I know they have a better life than me,
    1. There is no social life like Sri Lanka born to work like a donkey, become greedy for no reason, when they time off from work everyone wants to sleep
    2. Average income (lets say $ 50,000 in Canada weekly $ 1000) average i Deduction income tax 30% unemployment insurance 25.00 pension plan 60.00 medical insurance 40.00 commuting to work Bus pass 40. to 100 (Net you have 475 then average rent 1 bedroom 1500 and above, if own house pay mortgage for 25 years even after pay off mortgage property tax gas hydro water average 1400 a month
So both have to work , food is very expensive saving if lucky without entertainment 100/=
if you have kids day care average 1200 a month
Nobody live year without a loan (credit card), people when they come on vacation, they lie like they are from the royal family
Now no choice trap I don't know how to swim out,
my sister's son got married a week before I heard guest list was one thousand two hundred,
man you guys eat 3 meals a day,
here average no breakfast only coffee lunch left over from lucky yesterday if not 2/3 days old, come home sometimes cook or tired sleep

You claim that the grass is not greener on the other side but that’s exactly what you’re doing with this comment, generally you guys enjoy a higher living standard and the thing about coming home just to sleep, yeah buddy that’s how we all live, work isn’t charity after all and what social life? Most people can’t even afford to eat out at a restaurant.
I truly appreciate your view point but I would say that relying solely on economic development measures we will never truly assess living conditions, like always inequality will exist and some people will suffer while the others enjoy.
