Hi Chaps. I found Negombo to be one area that was staunchly ROMAN CATHOLIC; especially among the Fisher Folk. I remember that area so well as I lived in what was formerly the Dominion of British Ceylon back in the early 1950s' when my dad (a former Marine Chief Engineer) was sent out to Ceylon in 1954 to carry out repairs of the Shaw Saville liner ss "GOTHIC" which her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip used when touring the Commonwealth in 1954. "Gothic" was struck by a cargo ship in Colombo Harbour and dad was sent out to Ceylon to supervise the repairs. I loved Negombo Beach. We used to travel there from our residence in Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) to Negombo every fortnight where we would book into a REST HOUSE and have a great Crab Curry lunch. I suppose REST HOUSES don't exist any more, but back in the 1950s, they were prolific and excellent for staying overnight or to drop in for lunch. Cheers friends. *SAFE TRAVELS!*
Lovely reminiscences. My parents came to London in 1949 ,went back to Colombo and came back again to London in 1954. Then they returned to Ceylon in 1957 when I was born. I have been in England for 50 years and love the British. Still have fond memories of Negombo as that is where my dad's family come from.
@@vijayafernando1 Hello VijayaFernando. Thank you for your kind comment. Wow your parents went to London in 1949. I was two years old at that time. I am a Scot, born at a wee town in the Highlands by the name of Drumnadrochit, which is west of Inverness. Looks like your parents went back to the UK when we left the UK for Colombo. I remember that we were initially put up at the Galle Face Hotel for four weeks by which time Lloyds of London had offered my dad a contract to stay with them for a period of two year. We were scheduled to go back to the UK in 1956, but dad was asked to stay on for a further 2 years and that contract was further extended to 1960. By that time, things were becoming somewhat edgy in Ceylon, and the parents decide to move on. The old man was offered a a job as Chief Engineer in Australia and on 12 April, 1961, we departed Ceylon on the Orient Liner RMS "ORONSAY." I have often thought about things in Ceylon, and remembered a few chaps I went to school with, one of whom I became re-acquainted with in Australia. He reminds me often of the way I screwed up my pronunciation of Singhalese words, and got a belting from the teacher who had a grudge against foreigners. All in all, I loved Ceylon and the food but especially the tropical fruit. Once again, thanks for your comments mate, which is very appreciated. Cheers!
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful experiences with us. It is always fascinating to hear stories from people with an interesting history with the place. The ONLY WAY to get to the bottom of the TRUTH is expose all those who do Greedy business and are telling lies. At the same time honor the honest guy by giving him a small business. Nothing else. Go around Sri Lanka also to the North and East also as they also need you guys going there. Colombo/ Kandy and Down South there are enough Tourists. People have a better chances of surviving. The rest of the country has few chances. So try other places. There are some nice beaches and clean places elsewhere too. By going there you are acting to support people in rural areas and in the areas where the government has totally failed to make any development projects. I request you to give social justice.

Thanks so much for this advice. 🙏 We made videos from Trincomalee and Nilaveli and loved the East Coast. ❤️🇱🇰
We'd like to visit Jaffna on the next trip. 🙏 Thanks for watching. 😊
What a lovely couple.. did enjoy watching your videos. You both are very friendly humble couple down to earth 🌍. Get well soon and if you visit Sri Lanka again my advice visit some aurvedic doctors and get some ideas for cancer treatment. Guaranteed.. take care and God bless you both 🙏
Thank you so much 🙏 so glad you enjoyed these videos 😍 Mandy is doing well and we are very grateful we were able to get tests done whilst in Kandy at the very good Asiri hospital 🙏. We would love to return some time and Mandy is very interested in Ayurvedic treatment so if you can recommend a doctor, please do. 🙏😍
