R.I.P. Chick Corea Feb. 9th 2021. I had to the pleasure of shaking his hand. Nice of Roy Haynes to drop the strainer for Miroslav's solo. ;-) My life and soul has been enriched - Thank you Chick -forever.
Wow!! Saw Roy in NYC when he was 82 and not only did he play great and had lots of energy...he was the life of the party!!!I went back stage and he was entertaining everyone with jokes and loud merrymaking. I think hes a cyborg from another planet. Not human.for sure. We should pay him ,much more homage.
Little did I know when I was listening to his beautiful music as a young man, playing it on my radio show Chick use to live right down the road from me. Could have met him and payed homage. Never thought the time would pass so quickly. Never thought we would lose him so soon. Far as I'm concerned 79 isn't squat. He should have stayed around. We need him. What a lovely man, genius musician.
Saw this trio at the Vanguard in the early eighties ( a rare “ reunion “ of the recording). It was like 5 degrees out, and we waited in line for an hour to get great seats. Obviously, one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever heard.
Roy Haynes is starting to seem like Forrest Gump. Here he is with Chick and Miroslav in the 80s. Go back to the 60s and these he is at Newport with Coltrane playing My Favorite Things. Go back to the be-bop days and there he is with the be-boppers. Fast forward to the 2000s and here he is playing concerts and still killin it.
I got to hang a bit around Bob Mosses and he told me a story from his younger days he'd go to listen to a session in NYC where Roy Haynes and Buddy Rich would take turns on the same set. So while Rich was amazing Haynes was uncanny organic hip unexpected the future.
What a weird contrast between this cutting-edge jazz, the formal setting, and the stiff, upper-crust audience. Needless to say, the music was brilliant.
All time favorite trio live albums Cream live at the Filmore...and Chick. Corea. M.Vitous Roy Haynes at the White 🏠...tough crowd but an incredible trio. This best performance live is on the ECM label live in Europe..great piece, recording , song list.!!! RIP Chick.
What a great group. Took alot of chutzpah for them to refuese to compromise and stretch out the way they did at this venue. Interesting that Miroslav got a round of applause after his 'Autumn Leaves' solo.
There is wonderful musical as well as intercultural harmony here. Musicians from diverse heritages come together to collaborate in the highest and most creative way. They are all absolutely phenomenal individually but they also possess fantastic cohesiveness and stylistic synergy as a trio.
Anywhere you can play Jazz is the right venue. Those people are the right age to have been Jazz lovers. If you were born in the 20’s, 30’s or 40’s, you had the privilege to hear great everywhere. I was born in 1948 and live music was on TV, the radio, and in the movie theaters. Duke Ellington played there when Nixon was president. Even that rascal was a Jazz lover!
@@maryking730 That's true! But i wrote this during the Trump administration... still waiting for the White House to live up to the Obama administration.
George and Barbara Bush are hipper than the current Democrats musically. This is exquisite classic jazz. No one today that would be President is ready for. This music is abstruse to them.
Hmm, we did things like this already in the 1950s and 60s in Europe, i.e. jazz happenings of all sorts, and in front of all kinds of audiences. Mixing jazz with art music, folk music and classical music.
Reid Whitton George Bush Sr. As director of CIA. I read a handbook written by Allende about free health care in Chile. It was very positive. It was at a residence where Rev. Tutu of S. Africa stayed while here in Detroit. These people were humanitarians. Sure lets call Archbishop Romero a commie so we can silence his message. What do we have now in Central America, with Costa Rica being a exception......education is liberating when keeping a open mind.
Not me tbh. Alot of modern jazz drummers dont do the traditional chick on 2 n 4 I think roy plays alot of "broken time" feel and its almost linear at times.
What great a ensemble..always loved thiis group.I always wanted to see this group but never got the chance.I really don't think this audience got the groove..but whatever.
He was a CIA man who some believe was involved in the JFK assasination on a peripheral level as crazy as that may sound. But anyway, this concert was during the Reagan presidency, not Bush Sr.
i like Chick's playful nature that has not changed over the years. but i wonder if it's a good idea to totally confused this bunch of stuffed shirts right off the bat with "total improvisation" with no structure. at least he didn't play down to the audience.
Well he could have started with a more recognizable tune to get the audience interested.... as it were, the dissonant opening number probably turned most of them off. He didn't do much to forward the music at this juncture.

Now it's RIP Chick and Roy. I still listen to Now He SIngs, Now He Sobs often.
Ah... the "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" trio. Wish they had recorded more than three albums together. Love this combination.

Wish he still used his mini Musser Timpani and tambourine.
The streak broke on November 12th, 2024. A great man, now at rest. But his music will hopefully live forever…

This trio make my brain feel good
Chicks timing is flawless, my god
daaaamn miroslav. what a beast.
Incredible!
Also an amazing studio album/cd too... worth 100+ or so plays. Same members...
Trio Music : ECM

One word, amazing.
I remember seeing this on tv as a kid
Amazing trio !
RIP... what a beautiful soul... a real pioneer of jazz.
The best bass player from Weather Report without question.
Ruthless comment, but true based on this performance
Agreed!!!
Snooze fest cliche comment. . Like who you want. Don't put players against each other.

There should be a statue somewhere of this exact trio as they were set up here.
He's going to be missed!
I'm glad that they didn't dumb everything down to please the audience.
What an amazing band in the WRONG venue. Hope they made some good money on this stop.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Stuffy Repubs

When will we EVER see the White House this hip again?
Never?
We did with the Obama administration.
First time I’ve ever seen someone call the Reagan administration “hip.”
@@maryking730 That's true!
But i wrote this during the Trump administration... still waiting for the White House to live up to the Obama administration.
@@xentakis I know, I can hardly believe it myself.
I viewed this around that time. They played in the white house. Awesome!
9:10 is the quick peek we get of who's getting dooown with it in the audience... including the two distinguished ladies up front!
Thank you sir for the upload. Blessed my heart.
Chick's chorus starting at 3:46 is awesome. Have to transcribe :) :) :(
I love you, Miroslav. Sending love to you today.
THANK YOU BLESS YOU THIS IS REAL THIS IS ART!!!!!!!
AMEN
All art is real... even without caps.
Thanks !!! What a great Video..Awesome!!!
Wow that was really really nice !
3:40 was gnarly
Piano, bass, and drums ... miss those days!

ROY! Wow
MotionDevotion thanks for this. A favorite trio…. So good…..and during Reagan years? At the WH? Saw this at the time, but forgot.
I know the White House has seen many different kinds of acts over the years, but the fully improvised intro here MUST have blown some minds.
Playing live improv to George Bush is one of the craziest things I've ever seen.
Ronald Reagan in 1982 I'd say - just as crazy as you said...
TWO SCHMECKLE HEADS.
Who on that White House staff was hip enough to understand what a profound trio these 3 were?
Exactly...youmdont know. So....
Wish I had the ecm trio music disc. Epic stuff.
Jazz is the holy grail
Well the audience applauded in all of the correct places!
Wow!
nice!! I know there was a bit of tension in the air during the improv.
otavioandradas氏も書いてますが、まさに伝説のトリオ。Now He Sings Now He SobsのRoy Haynes、大好き。レーガン時代のホワイトハウスでこんな演奏してたんですね。

I loved Roy's sound on those old Ludwigs ....mmmmm
I guess Reagan was a show tunes or a country & western fan? He didn't bother to attend this great show.
did you really think that regan liked post bop?
Was busy planning overthrow of Salvador Allende.

Rip. Chick Corea
Yeah!
Never seen such an uptight room. Geez, what a group of mostly unhip people. But to the WH staffer who suggested Chick.
They are literally just normal people who are happy to listen to his music.

Didn't Cecil and Mingus play for Carter?

Is it only in mono?
7.46 guy falls asleep
Telepathic
What a pity...the audience has simply no musical clue.
Not sure about that. They applauded when the trading of fours was over and Chick returned to the head.
How the fuk do you know , you pretentious nit?
why? they are just enjoying the music
