- Review of our GQF 1502 Sportsman cabinet egg incubator we use for hatching chicken, duck, and quail eggs. We will also discuss some of the options available such as automatic humidity control, locking casters, clear glass door, brooding drawer, and various sized egg racks. Standard features include both automatic and manual egg turner control, variable turning angles, turn counter, temperature thermostat, and power interruption alarm. This is a commercial grade large capacity incubator that can hold up to continuous use while providing consistent hatching conditions. It is also suitable for hatching grouse, pheasant, goose, swan, emu, and even ostrich eggs with the optional larger sized egg racks. It can also serve as a temporary brooder for most sized chicks. Please note, this is NOT a paid product review. This is our own personal incubator we purchased for our own purpose of hatching eggs and selling chicks here on the homestead for additional income. For our needs, this was the best incubator for the price point.

That was a very informative video on GQF 1502 Sportsman Incubator. They should have paid you.... it's one of the best incubators out there and trusted by many to hatch out Quail, Ducks, Chickens,Turkeys to name a few.
Its a really nice incubator for sure... We have had plenty of people bring us their eggs to hatch, even if they owned an incubator, when it was a clutch of eggs they were really depending on... Our hatch rates have always been excellent !

I could do one, but it would be a while as we are in the middle of hatching season... I use a spray on ammonia based glass cleaner to clean almost the entire incubator... It seems to do a really good job !

Hello thanks for the turtorial I was wondering how you adjust for humidy for the hatching when a hatch is due verses keep the eggs on the racks at thier standards humidity temp?
Eggs are only down 3 days to hatch, and it does not hurt to raise the humidity on the other eggs for that short amount of time...

I need help please, My incubator when it comes close to lock down tends to leak out the bottom. Is there any solutions that you may suggest that could help me from it leaking?, It's not that the humidity is high. It's at 70% which is what they recommend for lockdown. It's at condensation is at the door of the incubator

Great video! Just wanted to ask if you have eggs almost hatching doesnt the humidity need to be higher than it does for new eggs just put in the incubator? How does that work?
It does not hurt the other eggs to raise the humidity for a few days... And then you turn it right back down to help the new hatchlings dry and warm up...
Can you have different hatches at the same time cause i'm worried that the humidity would be to high for any other younger eggs
You can set you eggs down at 3 days till hatch and just turn up the humidity for hatch day... A day or two of increased humidity will not harm your other eggs...

I was looking at your video and you have solved a problem I have been dealing with. What are the black rubber circles you have on the side of the blue racks that hold eggs I would like to know what they are called because I feel that when the incubator racks turn really steep I feel that bang hurts the eggs.
There is usually a small gap there, where the bang comes from... You can fold some cardboard and put tape around it to make a spacer so they stay pushed to one side or the other when the tray tips... I have noticed the same problem myself... I appreciate you watching...

My question is can u hatch 270 chickens at once? Like they all 270 chickens coming off at the same time is the box on the bottom big enough to hold all 270 chicken eggs?
Yes, it will hatch 270 eggs at once... You can stop the turner at about 30 degrees manually, and not put the eggs in the bottom... They will hatch in their racks, tumble to the low side, where they is room for them to fall on down to the bottom... Then you could pull them as they dry and move to a brooder... I dont suggest it, but it could easily be done...

We have hatched 90 a week in rotation... I would say 120 or so... It would be a little tight...
If you want to hatch off 270 at once, you will need a brooder big enough for that many anyway... I would find a way to stabilize the temp in the brooder and just hatch them out in there.... OR... Start 90 wait 2 days and start 90 wait 2 days and start 90 more... You wont have more than 4 days different in age and you can constantly be pulling hatches that are dry and bringing down the next...

Instead of that liner forthe brooder drawer.......try that rubber like roll of liner like you buy at dollar store to line your drawers so stuff dont slide aroundopening and closing them. We tryed that this year for cortornix quail and love it! They chicks have good grip to run around and......and air can circulate were it is full of holes

Great informational video. Do you have a generator you use if the power goes out?
We have not had any outages that really posed a problem since it is basically air tight and well insulated... We have battery powered temp gauges inside, so we could tell if it dropped too much... And we have propane heaters, etc, that we could put to use also... Thankfully, our worst outages are in the winter when we are not hatching...
What kind of hatch rate do you get? I am having a lot of problems with the humidity either being way to high or way to low.. I'm in central Louisiana... Any advice? I just lost a four peafoul and 11 guineas.. only had one each hatch.
We have the self watering humidity system... Left alone, it tends to run about 50%... Then, they sell the sponges that you can position in the water tray for the fan to blow across... For slight adjustments, we cut them in half... But I like to run about 55% during the turning process, and bump up to 70% after you take them down to rest the last few days... Better to be too high than too low though... So error that way if you can...

Super nice incubator! Very informative video. Do you custom hatch for people? You have a couple rare breeds of chickens don't you? Do you hatch them to sell? I have Salmon Faverolles & would like to hatch more from my parent stock.
We have hatched for all kinds of people, from a guy with one precious egg wrapped in a napkin, to a egg production flock needing replacement hens... We can run a single batch of 270 or turn out a consistent 90 per week.... We normally prefer to sell hatching eggs since we are not NPIP certified to ship chicks across state lines yet...
Hey I've watched this video on you 1502 Cabinet incubator and I have a question, I mainly raise peafowl and this year is my first year with my GQF 1502 sportsman incubator and how do you raise the humidity for the eggs in the hatching tray without messing up the eggs that are still developing in the turners? So far I've lost 28 Peacock eggs due to humidity levels being to low. It sounds to me like you really love this incubator and your doing very well with it, any advise would be so greatly appreciated!!! I'm losing a lot of Peachicks and I know it has to be a very simple fix and I'm running out of time for this season peafowl hatching! Thanks in advance!!!
JMHO... You probably need to use the sponges to raise the humidity in the whole incubator... Better too much than too little (that is what we have found with our duck eggs which are also finnicky)... I would say take it up to 60% and just hold it steady there... Your eggs will not lose moisture at anything above 50% so you should be ok...

At $10 per egg and $50 per chick I'm losing a lot everytime one dies in the shell and 95% of the time I keep the chicks until their a year old so I can see what I want to keep and what I can sell so this year has been a real loss and it shouldnt be after the money I spent on such a great incubator to have a seccesful season! I just now found this video, and reading the comments, noticed that your message is 2 years ago. I have always had good luck and results with using a spray bottle, and lightly misting the hatching eggs, 3 or 4 times a day. It only takes a minute, and you don't really affect the heat or humidity levels for the incubating eggs. I hope that you have already found a solution that works for you, but if not then I hope that I have helped you.
When it comes time for putting them below on the hatcher, can the hatcher hold do many eggs from all the racks? It looks like it wouldnt
I got myself into that mess a few years back... You can put them all down IF AND ONLY IF you are removing the chicks to a brooder as they hatch... OR... You can stop the racks at the high point of thier tilt... The eggs will hatch in place and the chicks will slide to the low end and down into the box... It sounds harsh, but its really not... Best to just rotate your hatches to one shelf at a time coming down...

We run most of the time at 50% and take it up to 70% when we have eggs down to hatch... Then we go back to 50%.... The 70% for a few days does not seem to affect our hatch rate in the other eggs later...

Do you notice a drop of temperature in the bottom part of the incubator when you add the sponges?
Not really, but I go out of my way to make sure I leave as much air gap between everything as possible... Good circulation goes a long way...
Looking to buy one of these... Normally for lockdown I increase the humidity in my current incubator (it can only do 1 set of eggs at a time). With the hatcher in the bottom, what do you do about increasing humidity for lockdown without doing it for all eggs in bator?
You have to raise it for all of them in there, but that is usually not a problem... Too little humidity is where you run into real problems... Rarely is too much an issue...

NPIP is not required to ship eggs... NPIP buyers need to buy from NPIP sellers... But we can ship to anyone...

Depends... We do our first candle at 10 days to eliminate any bad or infertile eggs... After that, right around 98% of the fertile eggs hatch...
So I need to buy chicken eggs trays? Their not included....
I am not sure... I remember purchasing the quail trays and trays for larger eggs like turkeys... I think mine came with the chicken trays... I may have bought extras though...
My incubator turns the trays but it will go one side and sit but when it swaps side it only stays for about 30 seconds and returns back to other side.... is that normal

with this incubator do you have to put all the eggs so they can be on the same time or different settings/
They are all controlled by a single setting... You can add more later to hatch on a later date... But all things are in the same temp and humidity...

I'm interested to know the spacing between the racks inside the incubator. If the quail trays are about 1.5 inches and will double stack, it can't be any less than 3 inches but, thinking they are probably 4 inches or more.
Its between 4 and 5... I have double stacked quail racks with no concerns... Close to 2" leftover and still got good air circulation....

It has a digital control screen... Just a couple button clicks.... Up or down...
I have turkeys and ducks in there now it’s been 28 days and no action yet. No problem with my chicks on the 21st day.
These guys are at 100 degrees and 74% humidity.
Sounds like it is just about time to take them down to the bottom and rest them to hatch...
Hey, so I also have a GQF incubator and am having some trouble hatching Muscovy duck eggs,any advice?
Duck eggs take pretty high humidity... We run ours up just below the point of condensation on the inside when we are hatching our Rouens... It may help with the Muscovy... And we try to run a flat 100 degrees for ducks...
What do you have temp set at?
Usually chickens at 99.5 and ducks at 100...
How do you turn the turn alarm off?
We just unplug it for a few minutes... The temp barely drops if you keep the door closed...
Can u hatch larger eggs in that hatching box
Yes... It has the height between turners, and above the hatching box to handle eggs like turkey and emu... And they make larger trays to handle them... You should be able to find what you need, or just call the company...

Why is my incubator making a beep sound? My buddy said the beep noise is because the temperature is correct only. Is it true?
They beep for several reasons... Sometimes an alarm, or you may have it set to alert you each time it turns the eggs... I think you can review a copy of the handbook online without ordering one... It will be somewhere in your settings I am sure...
Sir what is the size of the fan used in your incubator. Is it 4 inches or 6 inches. What kind of heater is being used is it bulb or nichrome wire. Thanks in advance

In am not sure on the standard model, but you could check on the GQF website... We have the optional wheel kit and stuff on ours, making it roughly 32" high...

LOL... Splay leg is a hip displacement caused by the legs separating side to side on a slippery surface... I am sure I can put something together during hatching season... No problem...

I believe it does, I may have misspoken in the video... We purchased several options, so it is a good chance the error is mine. My apologies.
How to you use the humidity control????
The electronics do not control humidity... You can raise and lower it by either covering parts of the water tray inside (which will lower humidity) or by adding sponges to wick up water into the fan air (which raises humidity).... The electronics only tell you what lthe level is, but they cannot control it...

It will do 270 chicken eggs in a single stack, but you can stack the trays, so 540 if you really push it...
Can You hatch and incubate at same time
Yes... It is not uncommon for us to have chicks in the brooder drawer in the bottom, and the top full of eggs... We can hold them for a day or two until they are strong, walking, dry and ready to go to the main brooder....

We have excellent hatch rates (before I say anything else)... You set eggs for 3 days, but the critical humidity point is between when they pip and when they hatch which is usually less than 12 hours... SOMETIMES (like with ducks) we will bump up the humidity 5% or so from pip to hatch (which does not hurt the other eggs in the incubator at all)... But I have NEVER lowered the temp for a hatch... // Being consistent through the incubation is far more important than small adjustments at the end... Cheap incubators, bad thermostats, improper turning, variable humidity - those things kill eggs... Even mummy wrapped chicks are usually not a humidity problem at hatching - and are usually related to poor humidity through incubation which physically shrinks the membrane... One thing we use are wireless temp and humidity sensors on the egg racks and in the brooding drawer so we can monitor them remotely and double check our incubator readings as well... You would be surprised how many incubators read inaccurately - and therein lays most hatching problems...
what is the size of the fan.
It has 2 fans... They are about 5 inches... And circulate the air really well...

Its that plastic / paper laminate over wood, and I had my doubts at first, but it has held up for several years now and looks like the day we bought it, even with the humidity inside...

On the 1502 How can I change the humidity
I'll assume you dont have the humidity setup if you are asking, so what you can do is put a cake pan of water in the top and see what it reads after the fans have blown across is for a while... If it is too low, then stand a couple sponges in it the fans can blow on and it will raise it... If it is too high, simple cover part of the cake pan with clear plastic wrap...
