If people are curious, the story told in this song is based off the Cad Goddeu, or the battle of the trees. It's poem created by Taliesin, and a portion of the book describing himself is mentioned in the song! Bum cledyf yn aghat I was a Sword in Hand Bum yscwyt yg kat I was a shield in Battle Bum tant yn telyn. I was a string on a Harp. According to a summary of a similar story preserved in Peniarth MS 98B (which dates from the late sixteenth century) the poem describes a battle between Gwydion and Arawn, the Lord of Annwn (This was before the reign on Gwyn ap Nudd). The fight broke out after the divine plowman Amaethon stole a dog, a lapwing, and a roebuck from Arawn. Gwydion ultimately triumphed by guessing the name of one of Arawn's men, Bran (possibly Bran the Blessed, who he later went with to save Bran's sister Branwen from his abusive husband in Ireland. It's also the same Bran who's head a buried in what is now London). In the Mabinogi story of the childhood of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Gwydion makes a forest appear to be an invading force. It is a well known battle, mentioned both as said by the Llyfr Taliesin and well as the Triads. I am SO SO happy they're finally doing Welsh mythology as we have a lot that is beautiful and rugged and just amazing.
Gwydion in welsh mythology is in the fourth branch of the Mabinogi. He was a magician and a trickster the name Gwydion is to be born of trees. Just a little background for those who dono know of welsh mythology.

THANK YOU for creating works upon these ancient themes, a part of our European identity. As a Greek, I learned of Gwydion from reading Graves's "the White Goddess". Love anything Welsh in general. ❤️
Be not ashamed of declaring The White Goddess a primary source; indeed I suspect it may be among the more powerful yet tabooed (hence never attributed) of our few remaining positive cultural influences. It is unquestionably a key text in the pagan renaissance. For me, reading and re-reading it c. 1967-1970, its naming and description of the Goddess as Muse became a pivotal element in my understanding of the politics that dominate the creative process: why genuine creativity necessarily begins with an openness that is absolutely terrifying to the patriarchy, and why the life of an artist is thus always imperiled. Apropos Welsh (Cymric) myth, a genuinely pleasurable non-scholarly intro is Evangeline Walton's Mabinogion Tetralogy, available from several publishers; best source probably Bookfinder.
@@lorenbliss You said it best! In fact, I do consider the White Goddess as a primary source, no matter what the academia says. I've always felt that the Mother was before any god. I don't know if it's because I'm a female Virgo, but it was always self evident to me.
@@davidmacfarlane1763 I'm sorry but I don't share your view of Graves. I've come to the same conclusions as him by researching independently and before I even knew about him.

I would, in writing a 1970 piece about my metaphysical journey, describe my boyhood mind's image of her as a decidedly female but otherwise undefined presence "beckoning from just beyond the edges of my mind." But I realized about two decades ago the actual beginning of my focused quest was the incident I disclose in "Abutments: an Encounter in the Northern Michigan Woods," for which google. So began, after late in my 16th year beneath the cover of a print journalist, what in geriatric retrospect seems a decidedly eerie sequence of events and ever-more-closely focused research that eventually led me to Graves. And Graves then literally changed my life; he gave me the words to express what I'd always sensed as cosmic truth, but lacked the vocabulary to describe or discuss until I read "The White Goddess." I've personally known perhaps a dozen more straight males who've had comparable experiences, not the encounter described in "Abutments" -- I know only one other person who encountered the Birds -- but according to what they told me, the others' experiences were at least equally eerie. Many of the Counterculture's best bards were similarly influenced, though as far as I know, it was publicly acknowledged only by Tim Buckley, whose "Phantasmagoria in Two" (as well as several other of his works, amongst them the lay of eldritch riddles entitled "No Man Can Find the War," for those of us who can read it, a clandestine anthem of anti-patriarchal revolution that suggests Buckley possessed of a Druidical potency akin to that of the First Taliesin), all of which proves him a superb Muse-poet, perhaps the finest in several centuries. In any case, She's back, big time, just as I predicted c. 1983 in the arson-destroyed "Glimpses of a Pale Dancer." Let us hope Her return -- already too late to avert the apocalypse -- signals at least some of might survive what is to come. And thanks again, Zoe; it is ever a joy to be able to share my dubious wisdom.
