It is such a joy listening to Mr Nack tell stories about Secretariat, he was such a knowledgeable man about horse racing in general, horse racing lost a best friend with his passing and is a great story teller! RIP Mr Nack you will be greatly missed!!
Secretariat was my introduction to the world of horse racing. I was in college full time, with a full schedule of clinicals, and I had no time to "waste" on something this frivolous. But, the closer the Belmont drew, the more manic this hysteria surrounding this upcoming event. I chiseled out enough time to watch the bloody thing, just so I wouldn't feel so excluded from the crowd discussions that were being heard around my campus. Why was this race causing such a furor? So, the day of the Belmont, I tuned in, not knowing a horseshoe from horseradish, Everything I came to love about the Triple Crown, was birthed by the single event of Secretariat, and I've watched every leg of the Triple Crown events since that time. It's still one of my favorite times of year, so thanks, Secretariat, for getting me completely hooked on the sport you made so famous. Will I ever see such a magnificent racer again in my lifetime? I don't expect to, but oh, the hope springs eternal!
I am from NY originally, Bill, yes Huntington LI:) I live in Ohio now, and have for many years! I was 20 years old when the Belmont aired. I was very pregnant, and my doctor would not let me fly or drive to NY. I have to say that women do not need medication to induce labor. I just watched the Belmont and watched Secretariat fly! What a beauty. I don't think that we will see another like him in our life time, but genetics do come around. I saw the movie, and from my take, Penney Tweedy was a strong and conflicted woman. She was torn between watching her children excel, missing their plays, etc. But I think she knew that she also had to honor her father and his legacy. I applaud her for being tough in then, a totally man's world. I think that Secretariat had the best people training him, and Ron Turcotte, bless you. You knew exactly what to do, you let him run! There isn't a day that I don't think about this horse, I can relate to his color, I am a red head too:) We seriously like to win!
How can a individual express ones self . I have always loved horses their beauty is incredible. But in my heart I believe that God sent this horse to Mrs Penny in her families time of need . I was in the military then and I like millions of others watched that race and what I saw was truly incredible and I am sure I will never see another horse like him . I am a Ky boy and one day I hope to take a trip there and just gaze upon the land where that magnificent horse grazed and spent his life .
That’s cute Patty: “We seriously like to win,” Lol, I’m a native Long Islander too. I grew up in Patchogue. (I graduated from PatMed in 1990) For all the people that don’t know Long Island; Hunting is a beautiful & wonderful Township! (The village of Huntington is a great place to have a night out on the town with your friends) As Patty would also attest to. As soon as people hear New York, they instantly the Long Island is like Manhattan or the Queens but it’s NOTHING like “the city” as we Long Islanders call Manhattan. If you have never been to Long Island? It is a beautiful combination of the Suburban lifestyle & the farther East you go on LI, it’s a rural lifestyle. It’s all farmland on both the Northeast & Southeast forks. (North Shore is extremely Wealthy (We used to call it the “Golden Coast” growing up. My wife is from the “Golden Coast” Patty, she grew up in Great Neck lol (We live in Sound Beach now) However, the further east you go on the North Shore, it is all farmland and wineries. The families that own those wineries & farmland. That land has been in their family for 100’s generations & they haven’t “sold out.” (The State of NY would love nothing more than buying up all the land & build housing & condominium’s on that land) The North Shore runs parallel with the Long Island Sound & it ends at Orient Point. The South Shore runs parallel with the Great South Bay/Moriches Bay until you hit the end, and that’s Montauk Point. We also have Ocean Bay Park, Davis Park, Cherry Grove, Watch Hill etc all on Fire Island & of course, we have the Hamptons, ugh! All 3 (Hunting, Patchogue & fire island) are beautiful places to live & visit. However, as I’m sure Patty will say this as well: Long Island has become too rich for the middle class to live on anymore! The only other State that has higher Taxes than LI NY in California. My Dad who was a Clam Digger & Commercial fisherman. The clamming & commercial fishing industry has all but been legislated out! (I could get my commercial fishing license ONLY because my Dad was a commercial fisherman) So literally and figuratively it is impossible for a young man or woman who wants to become a commercial fisherman on Long Island! The only possible way is if you have been “grandfathered ” in by a previous family member! (Ridiculous! The politicians want Hoopties flying around on their speed boats, luxury cabin cruisers & not your local fishermen on the water trying to make a living to support themselves) Anyways, my older sister moved to Florida about 2 years ago. My younger sister (who works for NY State) moved up to Massena NY right on the border between Canada & the U.S. and my youngest sister lives in East Patchogue but also owns a house in Upstate NY. Unfortunately, my Dad was right when he said eventually the only people that will live be living on Long Island will be the rich & the poor! There will no longer be a middle class because they can’t afford to live on LI. P.s. Patchogue has been totally cleaned up Patty. It’s NOTHING like it was, while we were growing up! It’s weird! Lol because it’s one of the more desirable nightlife towns like Port Jefferson used to be, can believe that?!
@@kenduffy5397 The last time I was in Long Island Island was 12 years ago and. My aunt have cancer and I cared for her. The once beautiful neighborhood was trash! Most of my family have passed or moved. I could not believe the state of affairs there. My GF lived in sound Beach years ago. It was beautiful. I have to say that I miss the hot bagels! If I could I think I would love to live in Montauk. I adore Light Houses. This will be Secretariat's 50th year
@@lired70 Sorry to hear about your Aunt. I lost the majority of my family from Cancer. My mom died from Emphysema but my Dad’s side of the family mostly died from Cancer. I truly believe it was the Well water they drank. People think I’m nuts, but that’s what I think. I was born in 72 but my Mom & Dad (who was not a horse racing fans) I don’t think they ever betted on a horse race. But they both told me, my whole life that they were lucky to see the best race horse to ever exist! So naturally I love horse racing (I don’t bet & I only watch the big 3 races) but I’m a big sport fan which is weird because I didn’t grow up in a sports family. Than you for your reply :)

Even though Disney never showed Penny and Lucien love affair in the movie but Disney did threw hints that they were more. Their time alone talking together, hugs and kisses and even their cheesiest compliments to each other gave me a suspicion.
WOW when you hear this great woman's crying son Wow greatness does not rub off he has made a fortune off his Mother's dream and hard work crying all the way to the bank WOW AND DOUBLE WOW

He does a remarkable job of telling the story.
I watched him trIn before Preakness at Pimlico, his stride was almost 27 feet when breezing
I still love him He was the greatest

Why Disney didn’t choose a different actor?
If Secretariat was raced as a 4 year-old I can imagine him having a spoiler fitted to the back of his saddle he'd be running so fast!!
His last race, he was 3 months shy of being 4 years old.
