makes me cringe when stupid people damage old coins and other historic pices. if you look close at the video you can see this is a 1894 o silver dollar in bad shape thay are worth $50 in the coindishion his was in it was detailed enuff to fetch $100. and the bad part is people have ben told the last 5 years that morgons are getting rare and worth more and more money. now days cus of people like this they are harder and harder to get with the min price on a morgen with a readable date being a common being worth $22 min

When I was in high school, I walked around hammering the edge of a half-dollar with a spoon until it was flattened to almost the proper ring size and then drill the center and filed smooth.

To the people that are pissed about ruining a Morgan silver dollar. The Morgan's being used are worth melt only. Most of the Morgan's worth melt are being melted down and turned into whatever. It's a fact. So why not make a ring out of it? I would rather see a ring with Morgan identifying marks on it. Otherwise, it's an earing, not really knowing where that silver came from.

What a great way to put the old coins back to use. Many people have these coins tucked away in a cardboard folder, in a draw, in a room, in a house where nobody sees them. The coin is nice, I think the ring is prettier.

Nice work. Now I understand what the tools I made for a jeweller were for!. The shrinking dies were made in three sizes with the 20 degree taper and the pushing dies were made from hard bronze. I could not figure out exactly what it was all for but makes total sense now. If I had known I would of charged more!
This sounds like a young man with a young voice, but such a great experience and so skilled too. He is so gentle with that metal and he seems to care on achieving such details including symmetry of the ring and the equal bulging all around, excellent work, though the historians will not appreciate transforming old coins into rings.

I got some at coin shops and some from family. I thought about exchanging it at the bank but I would only get like $8 after the fee so I thought it would look better on the wall lol.
Being a coin collector it didn't bother me a bit. I see boxes of junk Morgans in every coin shop I visit. If it were a BU coin I might shake my head but this certainly was not.

Yes, the torch will heat the coin metal releasing the bonds in the metal call annealing, or softening the metal but when you quenched the heated coin in water, you put the coin metal molecules under stress again, called tempering or hardening the metal, that is why you are getting cracks in the metal. Let the metal air cool slowly, you will be amazed at how easy it is to work with. I have worked in a blacksmith shop for 40 years.
Working in a blacksmith shop explains your answer. Non ferrous metals like silver and copper don't harden like ferrous metals you work with. It is a common misunderstanding.

Just a thought, I know with steel when I want to anneal the metal I don't put the metal in water to cool. It must air cool to remain annealed. When you cool with water the metal forms a grain structure making it harder. Try cooling slowly in the air and you may have better luck forming the material.

If you had your press punch on the punch have you tried manufacturing as leave to slide over it with a intention rounded like the ball bearing. Would this help keep it centered
Just bought press, doming block, ring stretcher, ball bearings,small and large steel mandrels , liver of sulfur and a punch, I want to make Morgan dollar rings but I need to find out how to size down to smaller sizes.. such as size 10 and bigger is it possible ? Do I just keep sizing down ? What’s the smallest size I can make in a doming block I don’t have and dies or cones just ball bearing and a doming block PLEASE HELP LOL !

Mine retain the outside detail, the inside gets a little muddy. I do all mine hammering on a mandrel

You want to quench it immediately so the atoms stay aligned.
When you quench Carbon steel it hardens, but not copper, & so also I guess silver. As for Nickel alloys...I have no Idea.

where do i find tools like yours to make rings like yours? I'm from Brazil, it's hard to find the tools. congratulations for the excellent work!
Just a thought, I know with steel when I want to anneal the metal I don't put the metal in water to cool. It must air cool to remain annealed. When you cool with water the metal forms a grain structure making it harder. Try cooling slowly in the air and you may have better luck forming the material.

must you hammer the ring on a mandril to size it down? can't you just go straight to a reducer dice? seems like some details got damage.
Believe me no detail gets damaged by the hammering. If you go straight to the reduction die it almost always goes crooked.

If you had your press punch on the punch have you tried manufacturing as leave to slide over it with a intention rounded like the ball bearing. Would this help keep it centered

After you anneal the metal, do you let it cool before you start working with it?
Just bought press, doming block, ring stretcher, ball bearings,small and large steel mandrels , liver of sulfur and a punch, I want to make Morgan dollar rings but I need to find out how to size down to smaller sizes.. such as size 10 and bigger is it possible ? Do I just keep sizing down ? What’s the smallest size I can make in a doming block I don’t have and dies or cones just ball bearing and a doming block PLEASE HELP LOL !

You can go to a store and get sized, any store that sells rings should have a tool; or, buy a sizing tool for a few bucks online!
