You have to understand that the vast majority of LA's "historical houses" are not particularly old or noteworthy on their own merit. There are literally thousands of cool-looking homes in Los Angeles with celebrity pedigrees, some multiple times over, that are owned and lived in by people who don't want to be bothered by looky-loos. Despite being financially well-off, most of these people are normal folks trying to live normal lives. Additionally, many historic homes are located deep within residential neighborhoods - some accessible via narrow, winding hillside roads, or cul-de-sacs like Marilyn's - and therefore totally unsuited to tourist traffic. This is why the Playboy Mansion isn't a Museum (that said, the current owner did agree to preserve the most historic features of the house because of its architectural and cultural significance). Marilyn's house is not architecturally unique or rare on its own merit, and it's virtually invisible from the street. It is not a grand landmark, it's a very private piece of property. There are many museums, foundations, and government entities that preserve places like Edgar Allan Poe's house, Louis Armstrong's house, Mount Vernon, Monticello, the Vanderbilt Estate, Hearst Castle (owned by the State of California), and many, many more, but those properties have support and logistical characteristics that Marilyn's doesn't.
It should be kept as a museum to Marilyn Monroe. I love that sculpture. We had her in Bendigo, Australia when the Marilyn Monroe Exhibition was touring. Thank you for sharing.
I went to Marilyn’s grave in 1990, and then to her house in Brentwood, I don’t think anyone was living there at the time, the garden looked overgrown and neglected, I took a photo and had a painting done, that still hangs on my living room wall. It was one of the most memorable days of my life..
To Rhonda Forbes. How lovely that you had a painting done, of the photograph you took of Marilyn's home! I would have loved to get to know her NEIGHBOUR, who was interviewed on T.V. Close to tears, as she spoke of her close friend - and how she felt it wasn't right about what happened to her.
Yes the house looks a bit run down in images here from 95'.. I'm thinking, in the scenario with the house... Do I want to be remembered by my death and if so, what of it? Should where it took place become an odd tourist attraction? I hope not.

I grew up 25 min. from here. When my daughter and I visited Marilyn's crypt recently, we left our kisses for her, and then went to visit her home (2-3 mi. from the cemetery) . I literally GASPED as they had begun bulldozing homes on the left side of her street, Fifth Helena Drive. This neighborhood is/WAS (!!) so charming with its mix of cute bungalows and stucco Spanish haciendas. They're destroying it! 😭😭😭
It's not important enough to save. It's just a celebrity home. Where she died. SO every celebrity home ever, anywhere, in which the said celebrity died, should be preserved? You're being ridiculous. He has every right to do with that property what he wishes, as long as it meets zoning laws and codes.
@@shadowwoman7605 Exactly! People saying how wrong the buyer is for doing what they want with their property are still God worshiping celebrities. The current owner is probably tired of tourists coming to the house poking their noses in places they shouldn't be and holding cameras over the gate as if they are going to find traces of a woman who has been dead for 62 years. The house was not turned into a museum, preserving the home and all furniture as it was when Marilyn lived there. I'm sure her family went in and cleaned out everything that belonged to her after she died. With that being the case, the home ceased being hers and therefore has no historic value other than the fact it had a famous resident who died there.
This house is all that’s left of her legacy. She was so proud of that house, the ability to put down roots. Up the coast in Monterey, you cannot demolish any house of significance. Harben Hunter was a significant architect. This frustrates billionaires to no end, but it favors preservation. That house is so elegant in its simplicity and unpretentiousness.
Greedy developers make me sick they are always pulling historical buildings down and leaving nothing for future generations to see , if humanity does not have a past to learn from then the future is bleak.
Many of those old homes are structurally deficient. You would be amazed at how many of them are severely and irreparably damaged underneath the exterior facade. It is actually much more expensive to fix than tear down and start over. If you saw the property in person you may be shocked at how decrepit things really are.
Marilyn has has been gone for over sixty years ... this young generation hardly know who she was ... I suppose its time for the developers to move in ...
Exactly. They knew how famous the house was and had to know they'd face outrage for tearing it down. How about adding on to it in the back (if possible), leave the front alone.
That is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT ! Just like , the very first time I had ever been to Marilyn's last house , we pulled up and parked and the big gate was open and There in the yard was a lady and her toddler son . So , I walked up to this side of the big gate and The lady had her back to me - where I was standing and she was on the phone , I was very polite waiting for her to notice me standing There , But when she turned around and saw me ( and I hadn't even said a word .) She just started Screaming at me , "No NO , I AM SO SICK OF ALL THE PEOPLE & THE MEDIA I never get a moments rest " is What she screamed and I thought to myself "Well lady , You shouldn't have bought Marilyn Monroe's LAST HOUSE then" , I mean it's not like it belonged to just some Actress , MARILYN WASNT JUST SOME "MOVIE STAR" , MARILYN WAS( & IS ) A LEGEND !!! right ?
HI Scott...Im sortof a History Nut, and I like what you said about not having to like these historic home Tear Downs. 110% Agree!! Its Wreckless. We need to preserve history. Now more then ever.
My cousin purchased that house when he first moved to Hollywood. He never lived in it and sold it after owning it for about 8 years. He moved back to England and purchased a castle that he was going to renovate, but he was so busy with theater at the time that he ended up selling it as well. I always wished he had invited us out to California so we could've seen Marilyn's home for ourselves. He had become famous by then and became a real a-hole towards family. His daddy, my uncle, said he " got too big for his britches". He wasn't wrong. RIP Marilyn🕊🤍💔🕯

It’s so sad that a beautiful piece of our history was destroyed just because she tried to squeeze her ridiculously huge butt into a dress that was once worn by the beautiful Marilyn Monroe she didn’t care that she completely ruined such a gorgeous dress
I love her Brentwood home, secluded, quiet and modest but not uniform. Such a tranquil place, surrounded by lots of greenery, she had good taste! Thanks for the tour! Oh and the thought of demolishing such a beautiful home is so ridiculous... I heard they wanted to flatten the entire area to create a bigger lawn for their kids to play on smh..
Thank you, Scott. I sincerely appreciate your keeping up with this story. That house is part of American cultural history. I was outraged over the Kardashian disrespect for that iconic dress and the damage she caused, which Jordan highlighted when the dress was on display. It was an unbelievable disgrace. Our cultural history is being destroyed at a fast pace; Americans seem to not care, and greed often trumps cultural preservation. Years ago, I saw two videos on UA-cam about this house. One was a realtor’s open house tour when it was up for sale. The other was an earlier video with interior photos as well as architectural and interior design layout drawings. I love and value the work you do. It is more important than ever now. ❤️ marlene
It's private property. If you own it, you can do with it what you want as long as it conforms to zoning regulations. In NYC, some properties are designated by the Landmarks Commission as historic in nature so whoever owns it can only make changes the Commission approves. The formation of the Commission was spearheaded by Jackie Kennedy after the Pennsylvania RR sold off Penn Station to developers who immediately demolished about 90% of it and built 2 Penn Plaza and Madison Square Garden above it.
Would like to know what happened to her diary? Would truly believe she was murdered and not necessarily committed suicide. Yes, she struggled with depression and other issues as she was mentally fragile. She was such a beautiful woman who could sing, dance and act. If good can be found by dying so young, she will always remain beautiful. Am praying her home will be saved. She is a part of history and her home should be preserved. Thank you for sharing.
Great video Scott. For the best read on Marilyn Monroe----most particularly on her murder----read "The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe" by Donald Wolfe. Harrowing.
Idk why they would even buy it knowing it’s history and then demolish it. Why not buy a different property close by? They can’t be shocked that it’s upsetting to people. It’s a shame because houses like this and Sharon tates were so beautiful and tasteful and unique and they’re only being demolished to be replaced by the soulless output that these new architects have to offer. My dream home is straight out of Tuscany Italy. Made of all stone. I love houses with character! Kim Kartrashian is exactly that and who in their right mind handed over Marilyns dress to her? Why would anyone let that gross pig wear it?? Did she pay for it?? Since she ruined it, they should have charged her at least a million for such an iconic dress! These people just irritate the hell outta me! What's sad is young people are coming into Hollywood and demolishing historic homes and putting up ultra modern looking boxes, I call them. Looking at a place where an actor or musician lived is getting a glimpse into there personal style of living. Thank you Scott for sharing these updates with everyone.
Marilyn was an icon, who was loved by all. Women wanted to be friends with her and men just wanted her. I can remember the day she died and it shocked the nation. Marilyn's life was tragic, but she did become a great actress and she could sing and dance. I don't believe she committed suicide, I believe she got confused as to what drugs she had already taken. Keep the house intact.
Let me assure you, it was no accidental overdose. I grew up in that area, we had a family friend who lived next door to her, and our neighbor was an old vaudevillian/actor (Floyd "Buster" Shaver) who knew her personally. He was hysterical when she was found dead and ran to our house holding the LA Times in his hand. I never saw him so upset. He told my father "Marilyn is dead! Those GD Kennedy's killed her. She knew too much!!" Everyone in Hollywood knew/knows that she was murdered. Huge coverup by the LAPD Chief at the time, William (Bill) Palmer - a very close friend of the Kennedys. Everyone knew what went down that weekend. Neighbors heard the altercation and EASILY IDENTIFIABLE BOSTON and ENGLISH ACCENTS. 😉
She died 4 months before I was born. My Dad was a Cop for only a few weeks. Don't know if he was at her house. Yes a sad story and yes she was murdered.

If they're rich enough to buy TWO houses, and tear one down, to show how wealthy they are, they can buy any one of a thousand much bigger houses in Los Angeles. This is just for their own ego to say "We just had Marilyn's house torn down! Ain't we clever?"

Hugh Hefner bought it from Madonna in 1992. So, he had it ever since then. Yeah, he used Marilyn's early nude calendar image to launch his famed magazine. He bought the rights to the image to be reproduced. I cannot judge Mr. Hefner for what he did and all of that, so it's not up to me.

Thank you Scott. 7:00, showing the white walls there, it is now as of this writing smoothed over. You cannot see the actual bricks now in the wall. I am a member of Marilyn Remembered Fan Club for quite some time. I work on weekends, so it prevents me to attend many of their events. I truly hope Los Angeles CAN find it of historical value for cultural significance. The owners say there is no evidence of Marilyn even have lived at the address. I beg to differ. There are tiles in front of the door that she put there herself. Cursum Perficio. Those have been there since she owned it. The owners by suing the City of L.A. hope to stop the vote to make it a cultural significant site worthy.
People never take the time to ponder the ramifications of their actions. Kim K's didn't take into account damaging the dress. She only cared about wearing Marilyn's gown, and the owners of Marilyn's house have not taken in the cultural significance and respect one must have for someone with Marilyn's myth and the respect in Mr. Harbin Hunter's architecture. The home shouldn't be torn down because it is a piece of art. It is not a "cookie-cutter" home. The type you would find in a sub-division.
Well, Marilyn's just is not comparable to Sharon's. Sharon and her guests were brutally murdered in it. I don't know anyone that would want to live in such a place. I know I would not having seen the death photos of it, which the LAPD took and had to for evidence of the crime scene. Marilyn died in bed as we all know by now. There was no crime committed there. That is a fact.
Even after knowing about the cemetery for years, your words about how she was what drew so many famous people there after her really hit home. One can imagine that a lot of the male stars wanted to be buried near her, besides Hefner, of course.

I'm sure you've read Donald Spoto's account of what happened in those final hours and for me, it's the most plausible. Eunice Murray carried the secret with her to her grave, but I know she was burdened with it. It's incredible to me that the city of Los Angeles didn't buy the house at some point, but I suppose they had the other residents of 5th Helena to consider. Restoring the house to what it was like in August 1962, something like the city of Irving has done with Ruth Paine's house, would be a perfect outcome.

Marilyn would be (about) 96 today. She'd still be beautiful! Please remember this lovely woman with respect.

@@shadowwoman7605 umm because it's not any house .. pure selfish

Greed. The plot must be worth a fortune
And then act surprised when people get upset! The owners can't be *that* naive.
Their property, they can do whatever the fuck they want
Many of those old homes are structurally deficient. You would be amazed at how many of them are severely and irreparably damaged underneath the exterior facade. It is actually much more expensive to fix than tear down and start over. If you saw the property in person you may be shocked at how decrepit things really are.
Marilyn has has been gone for over sixty years ... this young generation hardly know who she was ... I suppose its time for the developers to move in ...
They shouldn’t have bought the historical house hoping to tear it down.

Scott you have the best info. I simply love Marilyn Monroe she was stunning. It's such a shame we lost her too soon. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us !! ❤❤
I totally agree! She was an icon! I think people tear them down so no one will come around and bother them . That's my opinion. I could never do it. I would up date electrical, plumbing etc but would leave everything else the way it is. Great video!!! Thanks!❤ 16:22
Damn, i wish i had the money, id make them an offer they cant refuse
they're ✡️ developers. they don't care about any history just personal selfish monetary gain.
I think you should buy it Scott!!! You'd definitely give it the love, respect & dedication it truly deserves. Even better yet, what a cool place it wouĺd be to use it to display all your Dearly Departed collections!!❤Probably an impossibility due to zoning, etc, but definitely a cool idea to imagine coming into fruition nonetheless.
Thank you again for taking us along with you on another amazing adventure!!! You're one of the rare few YT channels that I can hit the "like" button even before watching the video because I already know its going to be awesome!!❤
This would be such a shame if it's demolished! It's part of history! I'm from Belfast and was hoping to at least stand outside it some day. What's wrong with these owners? I'd be proud to live in Marilyn's last home. Very sad.
I feel home's like hers should be put on some kind of historic registry or something of that nature so they are protected from being destroyed like that.
We will forever love and miss you Marilyn ❤
I really enjoyed watching that that was interesting hearing you talk about Marilyn Monroe. I like your channel.👍
Scott I adore you for your great work! Thank you!
Why? Is America always eager to tear down. Anything that has some historical significance. You look at the UK. And they really value their historical buildings. The owner has every right. To do whatever he wants with the house. If it was a regular house That being said. It belonged to one of the most iconic figures. In pop culture. Tearing it down would be an historic injustice. Besides it's a beautiful home. Thanks! For the update.Well done!🏡😢
Regardless of what happened there that is a truly beautiful home, and it would be a crime against it for that reason
La maison n'est pas magnifique, ma maison est bien plus belle. Seul l'endroit est intéressant car c'est au bout d'une impasse.
I visited Marilyn’s grave last year and I was outraged that the pimp Hugh Hefner spends eternity next to her. But worse, the guy above her was entombed face down. In death, turning her into a joke for 8th grade boys, showing no respect. It should never have been allowed.
Amen
Yes, I have read this. Hefner deliberately wanted to be entombed near marilyn.
It's just a resting place for him get a grip man he is dead
Disgusting. Actually shocking.
@@jeremybaker7963I’m less offended by his presence than the guy in the crypt above her. He’s still a pimp. And a deeply weird dude.
Im from UK our local pub in 15th century was going to be demolished the whole village campaigned to save it we won! Why would anyone in their right mind want to destroy such history and her home!! I wish I was rich I’d buy it and save it as it is!! Why do horrible people always have money!!🤬absolute scumbags!! Hope it’s saved!!!
Compelling video Scott. I really need to come down to SoCal, rent a car and visit these spots. The rainy, but still bright day in LA, was nice to see and actually added to your video.
Nothing is held sacred . All they care about is money. And what kind of people bought it just to demolish it? They must not have any morals
How devastating for us fans should the house be demolished. 😢
Such a great video and so heartbreaking people wish to get rid of such iconic peices of history 😢 once gone forever gone 💔
Always removing our history. Breaks my heart when they tear everything down/erasing everything. All those beautiful mansions on 5th Avenue, the Vanderbilts, Astors, gorgeous creations, all gone. Sad
Ill say it again...where the hell is the estate of MM and why have they not purchased her home long ago...after all the $$$$ they made/still making on her likeness?????
This is a good point.
Why don't they move it? I live in Portland Oregon and two historic houses were moved. The historical society paid $1 for them, and they paid for the dismantling and rebuilding.
No they shouldn't be allowed to tear it down because they knew before they bought it what a historical and cherished piece of History they would be in possession of.
Scott - any way to get some of the house once it’s leveled?
I'm sure he will.
Geez, that’s pretty mercenary. But I guess that’s what he does.
@@riandraegon556 Of course - if you know Scott he never passes up an opportunity for some historical mementos! If he had the $$$, Sharon Tate’s door would’ve been his! 😁😁😁😁😁
JUST THINK HOW YOUNG SHE WAS , A HOLLYWOOD ICON , HER AND JEAN HARLOW LEFT WAY TOO SOON , VERY SAD TO ME 😢💔🥀🙏
It is a real shame to see the older homes demolished. You will never see craftmanship (interior or exterior) like that anymore.
Find another place to build your McMansion. Marilyn is such an iconic, legendary figure now it feels like this place should be preserved for future generations to see/enjoy. No respect for history. If I could afford it I'd be honored to own and live in her place. I mean can't you just update the inside & enjoy the original architecture? I think there's something to be said about living modestly even if you're rich.
Thanks also for the stopover at the Dimaggio household... looks great & I like the Marilyn statue. I gottta make it out to Palm Springs one of these years.
